We had appetizers, entrées and dessert on 3/30/23. The atmosphere of the restaurant is much nicer than the photos reveal. Service was excellent and so was the food. Everything was hot, cooked to perfection and presented fabulously on the plates. We had escargot, French onion soup, duck, lamb shank, and a couple of wonderful desserts. This was our first visit to La Sen and given the wonderful experience, we are delighted to have found a French restaurant like this and we expect we will become regular visitors. read more

A average French restaurant but honestly nothing to write home about! The crab cakes was just okay & NOT the place to order a steak by any means! The ribeye had NO flavor, I asked for no salt (which I'm use to eating without) but the seasoning & the quality of the meat did not justify shelling out $48! The Cesar dressing wasn't rich & creamy like other resteraunts, again just okay. With tip i paid over $165 for two that's without alcohol or drinks! I was excited to try this place after I walked in and one of the servers was so excited that they had a large positive write-up in a local paper. He was so pumped, it pumped me up. Unfortunately he was not our server. My excitement came to a screeching halt when we sat and sat and sat with no menus, bread or water. We were seated for a good twenty minutes when we finally had to flag someone down to ask for menus. We got said menus and perused them. We decided on a couple of salads and calamari. I asked for my salad with no croutons. When the salads arrived, my salad had remanence of croutons as if they put them on my salad and then tried to pick them off, leaving croutons crumbs behind. Also the calamari was cold! I had to send the calamari back, which is something I NEVER do but I drew a line with a fried dish being cold. Now the main dishes, steak and fries and a salmon dish. The steak and fries were cold. The salmon was super hot but to the point it was over cooked. When done, we had to ask for dessert menus but opted not to do dessert there as my 2 hour meter was due to expire. This was in fact a 2 hour dinner. Not due to intent but due to lack of service. Terrible terrible service. And the food was subpar. I wonder if we would have had the enthusiastic server if our experience would have been different. Guess I'll never know. read more

Took my parents who were visiting from out of town here for dinner. It was a weekday night so we got seated immediately. Our waiter was really friendly and answered all of our questions patiently. We ended up ordering the calamari, french onion soup, entrecote (steak frites), duck confit, mussels in cream sauce, and one of the specials that night which was a braised lamb shank. I don't want to waste time commenting on every dish, but everything was delicious. One of the best parts was the complimentary bread and house dip (a delicious blend of olive oil, garlic, herbs, and rice vinegar). Very unique, very tasty. My mom (who owned and ran a restaurant for 15 years) was so impressed with the meal that she asked if she could speak to the chef/owner. He came out and was so friendly and polite. His story about how he got into the restaurant business is really interesting too, you should ask him about it! Overall a really excellent dining experience. The place is cozy and intimate, and would be great for a date night. Also the prices I thought were pretty reasonable for French food (and for being in Walnut Creek). Highly recommend! read more

Really enjoyed my visit here! My parents and I stopped by for a weekday lunch and shared the Escargots, Salade au Roquefort, Rib-eye steak, and the Saffron Salmon. Portion size was reasonably large, so these four dishes were enough to fill three petite individuals. The server was clearly inexperienced but kind, so we appreciated her effort. However, for a French restaurant with white tablecloths and their decor I expect a more trained staff. On a Friday at noon, the place was nearly deserted. We were one of two tables. All of the food was rich in flavor and had complimentary components within each dish. In particular, the Salade au Roquefort was my favorite - the green apple, Roquefort cheese, and light dressing perfectly complimented the greens. Overall, plating was nice, with the exception of the rib-eye which was not very eye pleasing. In summation: GREAT value for the price (so affordable for French food!), upscale ambiance, and tasty items. Recommended! read more

Manager was so rude I left the restaurant crying! On 12/8/2023, my birthday BTW, my wonderful friend made reservations at Las Sen for 4 people. When we arrived the general manager was at the hostess stand looked at me then looked at the dog and walked away without acknowledging us. The restaurant is not very big and there is no way he could say he did not see us. One of the servers kindly stated that someone would be right with us. The GM then came back and asked if we had a reservation and he was very visibly hostile to us. We let him know that we indeed had a reservation, he then asked for the paperwork for my service animal, when i responded that he could not ask for documentation he responded that he believed he could. I tried to educate him that all he could ask per the ADA was is the dog a service animal, and yes he is, and what service does the animal perform and he is a medical alert dog, I also handed him the ADA regulations card that I carry with me which is helpful to help educate anyone who is not familiar with the ADA rules. He then walked away and started to set up a table in their little hallway right by the hostess stand, and I asked if we could sit at a regular table there were several open, it was 7 pm and they were not reserved, he stated he wanted to keep us away from the other customers. This is also in violation to the ADA rules, my friends tried to reason with him as at this point and he was just so rude, hostile and quite honestly non-caring. I have never been treated so disrespectfully in my life, and as a latina woman I have been treated disrespectfully so I do have context for being disrespected. Doesn't matter how good the food is, if the customer service is horrendous! read more

Small venue, delicious and typically rich French offerings where if you weren't looking for it you would miss this restaurant. As for food, once you get past the top cheesy crust of the French Onion Soup you are swimming in a pool of broth. I would have liked to see more substance there. I ordered the scallops which were 3 good sized pieces covered in spinach and on a bed of cheesy risotto. I'm always surprised how filling a few medium to large sized scallops can be. Overall, I enjoyed the service...no stereotypical snobby French waiters, but just good, consistent service and the food hit the mark. Expect to pay around $220 for 3 entrees, including a modestly priced ($40 - $55) bottle of wine, a couple of shared desserts, and tip....sticker shock for any non-Californian, but typical for the "Rodeo drive of the North"! read more

Hubster said he would love to come back (and he's a very, very picky eater). We ordered the Calamari (4 stars), Escargots (3.5 stars), Vol-Au-Vent (5 stars), Scallops (5 stars), Boeuf Bourguignon (4.5 stars), and the special "Beef 2-Ways" (5 stars). I've been to the La Sen Bistro in Concord before, but this new Walnut Creek location just opened up and its closer to my home. I set up a reservation for 6 about a week ago through the phone. I started off with a glass or Chardonnay. Yum, light, and not too dry! I forgot the name of it, though. Then came the complimentary bread and green sauce. Bread was still slightly warm and the tangy sauce went very well with it. We started off with ordering the Cesar salad, pear salad, and Brie cheese salad. The Cesar salad wasn't my favorite, but what caught my attention was the pear salad. It didn't have too much dressing, the pears were sweet and crisp, and the greens were fresh. We also ordered the calamari, which was lightly breaded, and it had breaded onions and red bell peppers. The texture was not too chewy and just right. For my entree, I got the duck confit. The meat was so tender and flavorful. It came with a wine sauce and zucchini, potatoes, and carrots. I definitely recommend it! I also reached over and tried my significant other's filet mignon and mashed potatoes. What! Meat was so so tender and cooked right! It had a gravy looking sauce that had a hint of wine. It also came with three grilled shrimps too and did not regret asking for one. I wish I could have fit that dish in my tummy too. Next time! Lastly, we ordered dessert. The Creme brûlée was crisp at the top and it's custardy, vanilla was just the perfect amount of sweet. The fried rissoles with ice cream was my absolute favorite. The pastry was crispy and filled with fruity yumminess. Paired really well with the vanilla gelato. The servers were very nice and attentive to the six of us from start to finish. A cozy, romantic place to hit up with a date or good friends. The place was pretty full when our party came, so it's best to make a reservation ahead of time. The food was delicious! We ordered the garlic bread, fried balls of risotto, and the ribbon cut spaghetti with meatballs (all delicious). My favorite part was the lavender lemon drop they had on their menu. If you're a fan of lavender, then look no further! The flavor was mellow and blended well with the lemon. The place felt a little short staffed, but our waitress didn't leave us feeling unattended. I am so happy La Sen opened a restaurant closer to me! La Sen Bistro - Walnut Creek is just as amazing as the original location in Concord. This restaurant takes reservations, which isn't absolutely necessary but recommended! They have tables of 2's and 4's and tables that could seat larger parties in the back as well. I've come here a couple of times and parking isn't a problem. I'm always really excited to start the meal with their complimentary bread and garlic/cilantro dip. Although I'm hesitant to stuff myself with bread before my entree, I've always ask for seconds of this delicious dip (with no regrets!). For appetizers, I would recommend: -Crab cake salad -Caesar salad -Pear salad** (my favorite) -Roquefort salad -Fried calamari** (table favorite) For entrees: -Duck confit** (my favorite) -Grilled lamb chops -Surf n turf (filet mignon and prawns) -Rib-eye steak -Scallops For dessert: -Apple & blueberry rissoles** (table favorite) -Chocolate cake with vanilla gelato** (my new favorite!) -Creme brûlée La Sen is still considered one of my favorite restaurants, one of few that I always tend to want to overeat at. :) It is quite affordable for a nice dinner date spot and the host/servers are welcoming and kind. read more

I chose this place to have a birthday dinner with my friends because they love French cuisine and this was the only place that was rated decently in the East Bay and was near all of us. We had the bread with their sauce, calamari, escargot, ribeye, duck confit, lasagna, 2 creme brulee, another dessert (forgot the name), and 2 glasses. The bread was good. Instead of butter, they serve it with this tangy green sauce, which I really liked. The calamari portion was a bit of a shock for me, because the portion was extremely small. We all each got about 4-5 small pieces and the rest was filler (peppers and onions). There was 6 escargot per order. Like others, I also thought that the escargot was super oily, not in a good way and a bit bland. My friends seemed to enjoy their duck and lasagna. I had the ribeye without the sauce and thought that it was slightly over cooked (I received medium instead of medium-rare), but there was a lot of flavor. Although I specified that we were celebrating a birthday, and even though we all ordered a dessert, the birthday boy didn't get anything special, not even a candle for the dessert that we paid for. I'm not saying that every restaurant should give out a free dessert or anything, but doing something special, even lighting 1 candle, would have been better than nothing, which is exactly what we got. I felt so bad because it was my idea to come here, and so we had to go somewhere else for a proper birthday celebration. I don't know if I would come back. Was it ok? Yeah, sure. We enjoyed the onion soup and the pear salad with the honey vinaigrette as our starters. Love, love, love this restaurant. My husband and I discovered it over 10 years ago in the original location of Concord. We were walking by and saw that they had just opened. Initially, what drew us inside was the fact that they had duck breast on the menu, which is my favorite bistro food. Well, that and it looked charming, upscale with a nice bar. From our first bite and the friendly servers, we knew we had found our perfect date night spot with wonderfully prepared dishes. When they left Concord and opened in Walnut Creek, we eagerly followed them. I still order the duck breast, but have a few other favorites that I add. The mushroom soup is exquisite with extra mushroom strips and garlic croutons on top. The pear salad with pine nuts and a light dressing is perfect between courses. And very important, the servers are in tuned with the customer, knowing when to serve each course without rushing but without too much time lapsing. It's a true gift. They are friendly, informative and it seems really like working there. I just got back from 10 days in Paris and compared every meal to La Sen. And you know what, La Sen won in every category. It was a prix fixe menu and it is not advertised and you aren't informed until you arrive. $115.00 a person--after taxes and the proposed tip, that would be around $150.00 a person. That did not include a beverage. You are out of luck if you choose not to dine there -- reservations at other places are not easy to find. The service was horrible. La Sen has opened again at lunchtime and it is a serious contender for best lunch in Walnut Creek for people who love food. I had the escargot (of course, they are the perfect vehicle for garlic butter) and the vol-au-vents. Both were excellent. The service was polite, attentive and pleasant (thanks if you are reading this). Since this was my "fat lunch" for the month, I also added the rissoles (on recommendation from the waitress) which were perfect. For an indulgent lunch, La Sen is hard to beat in Walnut Creek, and I've lived here for 20+ years and eaten lunch downtown weekly. Magnifique! Merci. read more

we had a birthday dinner for six friends last night and the service was spectacular. They allowed us to bring in a birthday cake, candles and plated after dinner with no charge. The food is really spectacular. The beef Bourguignon was tender and delicious.Our waiter Lam was attentive, friendly and gave us excellent information on each dish. Started off with the beef tartare, escargot and calamari. The calamari was very good. The escargot was not. The escargot was somewhat drenched in greasy oily sauce that was pesto based. The escargot itself had a bitter taste. Not good. The steak tartare was ok but they served with ketchup mustard and relish???? Almost like a hot dog. Def weird. Ordered the special which was halibut. Prob one of the worst meals I've ever eaten. The fish was very fishy and literally flavorless. It came with snap peas that were over cooked. We also had the mussels which were flavorless also. So gave La Sen another try last night and it was definitely a 5 star meal. Wife had the duck confit which was absolutely done perfectly with crispy skin, moist meat and a touch of 5 spice. I had the Beef Bourgogne....nothing to say except wow!!! Best part is that we are both gluten intolerant, and apparently they use cornstarch as a thickener rather than flour. So many dinner options for us gluten free people. La Sen is now on our restaurant rotation for sure. read more

I had eaten here a few times for lunch before Covid and started coming here for dinner after they reopened. All I can say is Walnut creek has Montecatini for Italian and La Sen for French! The food and service is among the best in the area. I usually get lambchops, but have tried other dishes as well. Their bread dip is out of this world and I still don't know what is in it. The food is authentic French with a good selection of dishes. DO NOT SKIP dessert!! The Apple-Blueberry Rissoles are two tiny *baked-to-order* pies with vanilla gelato and real whipped cream. The Strawberry Napoleon is layers of fresh baked pastry squares with strawberry and whipped cream also served with Gelato. I am not personally a fan of flourless chocolate cake, but if you like that, it is among the best I have had. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Overall a true winner! read more
