Went for lunch with friends yesterday. Excited to try it. Had heard mixed reviews from friends...but love trying new places. Service was very good. Nice and polite. Now let's talk food. I had the carbonara which I always try because I find it difficult to achieve the creaminess at home. Carbonara was NOT creamy (mind you the creaminess is achieved with no cream if using the traditional Roman recipe) - the eggs were like a loose scrambled egg. Not nice. Next let's talk about the cappuccino I had, 99% steamed milk...just a tad of coffee- nasty. Friends at my table had the gnocchi which was good and the panini which were fine. Food: Amazing! The Caesar salad was packed with flavor, and the added anchovies were generous and delicious. I added salmon on the side and requested it medium-rare--it was cooked perfectly. My only wish is that it had been a bit crispier on the outside. Service: Friendly and welcoming staff, with many of them speaking Italian, which added to the authentic experience. The ambiance is certainly top notch. The indoor area is fairly small but the outdoor area is quite pleasantly large. The service was good without being over the top. The wait staff was speaking Italian with each other and some of the customers. The food was a bit hit or miss at lunch. The lentil soup was good by my taste but my wife was a bit less fond of it. The chicken sandwich was certainly made with fresh ingredients but the olive tapenade seriously over powered the sandwich and was certainly not to either of our tastes. The surprise was the fries. They were par boiled then fried but there was certainly more to them than that. I think those stole the show for my lunch. Review is for Friday lunch with the wife, and this time it fell on our anniversary. She is a big fan of seafood-centric Italian cuisine, so I booked one of the newer neighborhood restaurants, Taverna Sorrentina. Its a beautiful, welcoming restaurant with plenty of seating on the patio and inside. Initially we were disappointed that the brunch menu had much lighter dishes with limited seafood options, compared to the dinner menu. However, things got much better when the food came along with great service. 4 stars. Definitely get the Sorrento Salad with a side of salmon. Salmon was moist, while the salmon had tons of fruits, feta, and mixed greens with a light orange-vinaigrette dressing. Shareable with 2. The Chicken Genovese was my dish and had slow braised chicken with corkscrew pasta. The sauce came in a big dollop in top and you need to mix it yourself before eating. Very rich and tasty. Wife got the chicken panini with fries - solid lunch/brunch dish though she commented the chicken layer was really, really thin. For the surprise dish, they comped us vanilla ice cream with a live sparkler that eventually self-extinguished. What a great anniversary dessert! I first saw this place on BoozieBrunch's reel and got completely influenced by how beautiful their cocktails looked, so obviously I had to visit. We came on a Saturday night without a reservation expecting to maybe squeeze into two bar seats, but surprisingly got a small table instead. The restaurant itself is gorgeous. I really loved the color scheme and interior design, especially under the dim lighting, it created such a romantic atmosphere and definitely feels like a perfect date night spot. The staff were super friendly, and I totally understand what other reviews mean when they say this place makes you feel like a regular even on your first visit. Everyone was warm and welcoming. For drinks, we ordered the Napolitan Espresso and Giovanni's Nutellotto. Presentation-wise, they were absolutely stunning. Flavor-wise, I thought the cocktails were good, especially if you enjoy sweeter, dessert-style drinks with chocolate notes. For food, we shared the Gamberi e Calamari and Brasato alla Taverna. Portions were generous, seafood tasted fresh, and the calamari/shrimp were fried perfectly crispy. The sauces paired really well with it too. The braised short rib was soft, tender, and flavorful. Before we left, our server even brought us two small complimentary shots of one of their in-house cocktails. There were also more customers arriving and checking in after us but getting seated. Lots of shuffling of chairs, staff moving around, walking inside and outside. The staff looked stressed. The only person who spoke to me and gave me eye contact was the hostess. Otherwise, there was no acknowledgement of customers from the Italian staff who looked like they were the managers or owners. The hostess told us to step aside while we waited for our table. I asked if we could sit or wait at the bar area. She said typically we could but it's really full inside so we had to wait outside. Our table was finally ready and we were seated. Our waiter was friendly and full of energy. Thankfully the service improved. He had recommended cocktails and let us know what the specials were. We ordered cocktails: - 1919 - strong yet has a delicate tropical flavor with pandan and coconut notes - Chihuahua - delicious cocktail, not too strong For appetizers, we ordered: - Insalata di Sorrento - lovely lightly dressed salad - Gamberi e Calamari - great pieces of calamari with tentacles and big prawns. I loved the aioli For dinner, we ordered: - Pappardelle Special with beef bolognese sauce - very good pasta. The sauce was also flavorful. - Brasato alla Taverna - not my favorite. The dish arrived cold or a little bit warm. The flavor was okay. The pea puree underneath was also okay. I think I was expecting more wine sauce or something. For dessert, we ordered: - Cuore Caldo e Vaniglia - it's a chocolate lava cake and it was very good. - I can't remember the name but it was a partially frozen Nutella dessert tart with a Biscoff crust - also delicious. Weird that it was served partially frozen but it was really good. Overall the experience was good. They're fairly new and I think they've got some things to work on. Like greeting customers when they walk in AND when they leave. No one said "bye" or "thank you" to us when we left. The food pacing - our dishes were being cleared in the middle of us eating our calamari and salad when we weren't finished with them. We felt rushed. Then we had to wait for our dinner entrees to arrive. We ordered red wine when our dishes arrived and we had to stop eating midway because it took a while to get the wine. Snagged a last minute Friday night reservation. There's a nice, large patio which is perfect for the warm weather in Danville. Parking is also quite easy as it's right next to the big lot. Service was great! Very attentive and lots of table side menu items. We ordered the cacio e pepe, calamari, some cocktails, carbonara, and tiramisu. I think the food was good, but I feel like it was trying a little too hard. While the parmesan wheel is super cool, the cacio e Pepe pasta ended up a little mushier than al dente and was way too cheesy for my liking. It also had a slight taste of the fire/gas/whatever was used. The carbonara was delicious but had way too much guanciale in it (why am I complaining?! I don't know, but I guess it was way too rich). The tiramisu was pretty good, but since it was made table side, the lady fingers don't have time to absorb all the goodness and kind of feel like stale biscuits (but I guess that's just standard lady fingers). I have driven past this place so many times and never realized this place was so cool! When we arrived they had a dj on site. They had cocktails with some vodka brand and brought around samples which I thought was cool. I felt like I was transported somewhere in Italy. I will say that I've Been to all of their other locations and loved it. However, I did order the cacio e Pepe that I believe is cooked in the cheese wheel. I think they may have used a lil too much of the torch because my pasta tasted like gas so I didn't eat it. BUT we did have a few salad options and cocktails which were really good. Taverna Sorrentina -- Wow!! This is a definite must try and is popular. Our table neighbors love this place but didn't take to the previous place (which we agree with). Restaurant are taking recipes from two Italian Regions: Capri and Sorrentina. This is restaurant is new, probably about a month old. Food is elegantly prepared and plated. We loved the Apollo Sorrento (chicken stuffed and presented with an excellent Marsala sauce. Note: we normally don't like common Marsala sauce but this was a wow. The meatball appetizer and Insalata Sorrento were superb. Just the right amount of salt and flavors that compliments the ingredients. We ended with a Core Salado desert -- think lava cake with gelato which was one of the nicest Italian restaurant desserts we have experienced recently. They also have some items that are marked as table side presentation. We didn't order anything from that list but our neighbors did. One of the pasta dishes was served by flaming half-inch large pasta rigatoni with cheese. I think you can add protein to some of these dishes but the one we saw was a high-carb, high cream item. Looked rich. The restaurant is blue and gold themed. They did a great job tying all elements together for a pleasant, romantic, elegant setting that wasn't pretentious. Tables placed with "linen" tablecloths without butcher paper. Service -- excellent and on point. The vibe is high energy. Ceiling appeared to have nicely decorated acoustic tiles to reduce noise. Great color with lots of turquoise, it's modern prepared Italian with a small but mighty menu. Great vibe, and packed with peeps. They play great music, many traditional Italian songs done anew, along with Italian dance music and pop songs -- all Italian. I sat outside, albeit quieter and still beautiful, and thus, less vibe, it was still great and they sat me without a reservation. My server was one of the owner, Valerio, and what a wonderful gentleman -- warm and welcoming. I ordered a Brasato al Barolo ("short rib") -- beautifully plated with an amble portion of meat, and veg with pesto. Individually, delicious. Let's start with the service. The service was great. Our water glasses never got empty which I appreciate. The food was delivered promptly even though they were busy. Also, everything is made in house, including the desserts!!! You won't see dishes that come from Cysco Foods. The salmon was served perfect. It was moist, flaky, and flavorful. Everybody else enjoyed their dishes. The cocktails were on point. I had their spin on an old fashioned and it had good flavor and the cherry wood smoke added an extra dimension to it. The outside dining area was very nice. It was quiet and we were all able to talk without having to yell or ask someone to repeat themselves. The inside dining area was not as nice. It was crowded and noisy. If that's your vibe then go for it but we were very happy to be seated outside. The biggest complaint was that there was only one restroom for everyone. It was a non gender bathroom and everyone had to share it. So of course there was a line. That was the biggest complaint we had for the evening and everyone in line, there was three of us, thought it was crazy that there was only one. So would I recommend it? Yes. We showed up for drinks and dessert at 7pm on a Friday night. We sat at the bar with little to no wait and had the most wonderful service from the bartenders! The location and small and quiet, but beautifully decorated with very detailed dishes. We got the cheesecake which was light and fluffy, very whip cream texture in the best way, and the lava cake which just oozed chocolate out of it. Both were incredible in their own ways. I also couldn't resist the espresso martini, and although I have strong opinions against white chocolate, I enjoyed it VERY much. Very offputting. Unless this behavior is daily among customers, I would think it would not be worth pressuring the few tables in a week that might extend their dining to more than two hours. Came here with friends on a Friday night for an early dinner; reservations were for when they opened at 5. Ambiance, service and wait staff were all excellent. We ordered: 1) caco e pepe 3.5/5. Table theater was nice but for flavor get this at Dolly's in El Cerrito; 2) braised short ribs 3/5. Very tender but a little dry. The sauce, however, was very good; 3) the special pasta with tomatoes and peas 4.5/5. Very good flavor and pasta had perfect tooth; 4) carbonara 3/5. The pancetta/guanciale was burnt and added weird flavor to the dish; and 5) Caesar salad 2.5/5. Not made tableside even though the artcle we read said it would be. The salad was amazing--fresh, vibrant, and a great kickoff. we then moved on to the Parmigiana di Melanzane (a modern twist on the traditional eggplant parmigiana). It was cooked to perfection and a standout choice. The flavors felt both nostalgic and refreshed. For the main , we tried Fettuccine All'Isolana. The bartender mentioned they had run out of lobster earlier that night and offered to substitute crab. The dish was still fantastic, creamy, well-seasoned, and satisfying. The bartender noted that once the menu updates next month, they'll be keeping the crab version as a permanent option, which we think is a great move. We wrapped up with a tiramisu which was prepared table side. The tiramisu was a lovely finish light, balanced with coffee and cream. The atmosphere throughout the evening was lovely and the vibe was great. The decor is truly amazing, and the place was lively without feeling rushed it wasperfect for a Friday night. The one thing is that because they are a small restaurant they were enforcing a 2 hour limit so it's not a place for an unhurried dinner. My friend felt hers was a tad lukewarm but my husband's was hot in temperature. I first tried Taverna Sorrentina in January for a coworker's birthday for brunch and absolutely loved it! Sorrento was an unexpected surprise when we visited Southern Italy several years ago and we really loved staying there. This restaurant really brought back those same authentic vibes from Southern Italy, with its name being a tribute to the beautiful city of Sorrento. I loved how the gamberi e calamari appetizer at lunch was served in a paper cone--exactly how we had fried seafood served in Riomaggiore in Cinque Terre. (Not exactly Southern Italy but coastal Italian vibes just the same and this paper cone was such a special little nod!) I loved the beautiful mocktail drinks--my Floreale drink was positively beautiful and delicious (rimmed with flower leaves and honey). We also had the Insalata di Sorrento which was refreshing and delicious and balanced out the heavier but delicious Carbonara dish. I had wanted to try more items off the dinner menu and so finally was able to go on a rare date night with my husband. One thing to note is that they only really have "two" reservation times on Open Table for dinner. 5pm and 5:15 or 7pm and 7:15. When I called to ask if there was another time around 6, the hostess told me that they really only have two reservation blocks around 5 and 7 so that patrons can enjoy their time without being rushed out by the next reservation. 5 was kind of early, but once we were seated and dining, I did appreciate the time and service we were given because the next groups were not coming for another 2 hours! I had enjoyed my Floreale drink so much last time that I ordered it again. It wasn't petal rimmed this time but still delicious! This time we sat on the patio since it was a beautiful warm day right after Daylights Savings had passed and it was really lovely outside. Being indoors gives a more romantic vibe but it definitely is darker and I think I preferred sitting outside. My husband ordered the Neapolitan Espresso which was basically an espresso martini, and I don't normally like martinis but this drink was quite delicious from the few sips I had. The candy rim was also a perfect finishing touch. We ordered the same calamari and salad I had last time and for the entrees, we got the Cacio e pepe (for the table show) and the Linguine di Mare. To be honest, the cacio e pepe was cooler for the show than the dish. I liked the Carbonara dish better, but I was hoping a dish cooked in a giant block of cheese would be as good as the one we had in Milan years back. It was decent, but did not hit the marks as well for me. The linguine was delicious though! I also have to commend them on their bread and butter. I was trying not to fill up before the entrees got there but I couldn't help myself..it was that good! We were too full to order dessert but our waiter brought us a small gelato dessert with a sparkler for a celebration we were having, which was really sweet! This place is definitely worth all the rave it's been getting since it's opening a few months back . A slice of Italy, in particular flavors of Naples and amafli coast the food at taverna Sorrentina transports you to Italy quite easily . They have quite a few show stoppers or table side shows which are not just all flair but deliver a tasteful experience . So when there definitely try the Cacio Pepe or the tiramisu all freshly made table side. Or in mood for something fancier you can try their table side steak . All the pastas have a fresh and authentic Italian taste . Their burrata is super fresh and the mussels , eggplant parm and Pollo Marsala are worth a try . A Stunning New Standout in Downtown Danville - 5/5 We visited this new Italian restaurant in Downtown Danville within its first two weeks of opening, and it is already operating at an exceptional level. We arrived on time for our reservation and were delighted to be shown to our table immediately. The restaurant was completely full, buzzing with energy and conversation, and it was impressive to be seated so quickly given how busy it was. They've completely reworked the space (it used to be an Italian restaurant before), and the new décor is striking and beautifully done. It feels upscale yet warm, and the tables are thoughtfully spaced so you never feel cramped or like you're dining on top of your neighbors. From the moment we sat down, the service stood out. The owner, Rosario, was ever-present, clearly on top of everything in the room, and you could feel his pride and care in how the evening ran. Our server, Manuela, was fantastic--extremely attentive without ever being pushy. The cocktails set the tone. We started with the Giallo Limone (picture attached) and the Italian take on an old fashioned, the Affumicato. Both were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious--balanced, refined, and memorable. For food, we began with the Manzo Tonnato, their take on carpaccio, which was excellent. As a mid-course, we shared the Parmigiana di Melanzane, which was simply outstanding--comforting, layered, and full of flavor. For our entrées, we had the Fettuccine all'Isolana, a pasta with fresh Maine lobster in a lobster bisque sauce, and it was nothing short of magnificent. We paired this with the Insalata d'Inverno (endive, spinach, cucumber, beets, cauliflower, feta cheese, mushrooms, and white fermented cantaloupe in an Italian vinaigrette), which was fresh, creative, and a perfect counterpoint to the richness of the pasta. Rosario was also extremely helpful in selecting a wine. He recommended a Tuscan red blend that paired beautifully with our meal and was an exceptionally good value for the quality. Overall, this is an easy 5 out of 5. The attention to detail, the warmth and professionalism of the service, the quality and creativity of the food, and the overall vibe were all outstanding. I would love to give Taverna Sorrentina 5 Stars as the food, service and ambiance is on point. 5 Stars. The one thing they need to change is using a product called Fabuloso cleaner for tables. Fabuloso (purple) contains strong fragrances and irritant ingredients that cause allergies, sneezing and asthma wheezing. Also, the strong fragrance ruins the natural smells of the Italian food, coffee, dessert . I hope the management will switch to cleaning the tables with an irritant-free and unscented cleaner like Method or vinegar with water. Customers want to smell the food and not harsh cleaners like Fabuloso. I hope this is helpful for management to switch cleaners. read more
