For a long time I hesitated to come here because I thought they were a 21+ establishment and often I have the kids in tow. However, I saw they had a killer happy hour deal - 50% off the menu from 5-6pm!!! - so took a chance and brought the fam. They were super kid friendly (in that we didn't get any judgmental stares from having our kids take over the couches) and have so much stuff on the menu! Residual Sugar is a fun and popular wine bar in downtown Walnut Creek. They have an extensive assortment of wines with something to satisfy literally everyone's palate. Plenty to choose from, between their reds, whites, roses, and bubbles. One of my my favorites is their Jax cab. The No Curfew Red Blend is also excellent. You can go by the glass, or customize your own flight of three selections. The food is great as well. We usually go with the grilled cheese panini - yum! - which comes with a side salad, in some kind of strawberry vinaigrette dressing that I could drink by the glassful. Service is always friendly. I could do without the explicit music. It doesn't jive with a nice wine bar, and it's not the type of language I would expect to listen to at any place of business. What can I say, I'm old-fashioned that way. I love that they're open late, or at least later than most nearby eateries and bars. Business owners, please take a page out of this book. I want to support my local wine bar but what is happening here is a travesty and an affront to the God of Wine. The entire collection of wine was exposed to heat and ruined but they are still selling it to unknowing customers. Many of the wines that I inspected had corks bulging out past the foil and were discolored. The Syrah I picked and thought was safe looked good but under the foil, the cork was bad and yes the wine was rancid. I wish that was just a side story but the glass of wine I purchased was also foul. It was the most expensive Napa Cab they serve. I asked a few times how long the bottle was open and he did not know but guessed maybe a night or two before. This tells me a few things; they are not keeping wine fresh or pumping out the air or using a Coravin system for example. They are not writing the date opened even. Also in my personal opinion, the wines here are the lower tier to keep pricing down and profits high. It just makes the experience low for the customer. Lastly I did have a cheese plate and it was also terrible. The staff have no knowledge of wine. So it just ends up being a happy hour place for people to drink cheap wine. I'm sorry for the former failed business and appreciate trying to take it over but the business model is not working. It's not worthy of business woman of the year unfortunately. Fantastic spot for wine! My friend and I just finished dinner at Havana and stumbled on this gem. It was a gorgeous Friday night and we wanted to sit outside to enjoy a nice Pinot Noir. The menus were so creative and had a clever and witty description of each wine. Needless to say we had a few glasses. Deanna the Manager was down to earth, funny, sweet and attentive. Who doesn't like a good wine bar or even a bad wine bar! Good thing this is a great wine bar. Everything you could want. A bar, high top tables, outside seating with heaters, a totally adequate selection of bites and of course the intimate romantic couch areas. We have been to this location quite a few times as well as the Concord location (different review to come). Each time we have tried different wines and snacks but seem to be settling in the Jax Cab and a grilled cheese sando. For the beer crowd there are some on tap. The service is excellent and the decor is cool. Great vibe especially with the more current upbeat music on the sound system. I don't understand why some place don't get this. Music sets the mood. Places playing downer pop i.e. John Mayer etc., are a total buzz kill. This isn't that place. My only ding is I wish they were open earlier. Having said that they are open to 11:30 pm on Friday and Saturday and 10 the other open days. Maybe 9 on Sunday. Closed Monday. read more

I had this place bookmarked to visit next time I was in Walnut Creek and finally got to check it out last night! Cozy, cute vibe with a wall of wine and lots to choose from including specially curated flights! Went with bubbles the first time around and let them choose the second which was a great California Cab! This was a nice find recommended by a friend. Located in Downtown Walnut Creek. It's small and intimate. Went in to check it out and returned several times during my stay in town. Wonderful service (both from Justice and Daniella), tasty food offerings and wonderful wine. Happy hour runs till 6pm each day and is 50% off the entire menu. This was such a gem of a find in a place with many options. Highly recommend if you are looking for something casual, laid back and friendly. They balance it all and deserve to be rated number one in the area 15 years running. I look forward to returning. read more

I came in the other night for an event I was invited to. I wouldn't say this is the best place to have an event because spacing is very limited and they smoosh you in the back of the establishment. It is a very intimate atmosphere but with an overall chill vibe. There are bites you can try and great list of drinks to try. I'm not really a wine person so it was nice to both the beer and the wine. I absolutely loved the wine I had. I can't remember what it was called. I also tried a beer that was tasty as well. So glad to see a hoppy beer on the menu. The light snacks were yummy. If you have Brie you automatically have already won my heart over. Not sure what type of nuts they had but those were salty and tasty. Overall I had a great time and hope to come back. read more

I brought a group of 6 people to celebrate the holidays and we all felt well taken care of by the hostess/bartender, Naz. She made sure that we all had our wine and brought cloth napkins for our food right away. She also checked on us and brought us water. This was all while greeting new customers as they walked in, getting them menus, their orders, and their checks! She was a one-woman show! I was really surprised at how busy it was for an early Sunday evening! Everyone seemed to be having a great time and enjoying their wine and beer : ) We took advantage of the great happy hour pricing and tried both the house red (Merlot) and the house white (Pinot Grigio). Everyone really enjoyed their wine! What's wine without cheese? We also got several cheese plates, which were a big hit, and one person even opted for the panini plus arugula salad. This space is bigger than their counterpart in Concord, which has a different set up. In the Walnut Creek location, when you walk in the door, you see cozy couch, bench, and stool seating to your left and to your right. It's perfect for bigger groups! Directly in front of you is the bar with bar stools on the left side of the room and a wall of wines and lots of high top tables on the right side of the room. Great local wine bar tucked away further down Locust Street. I only tried the house white and bubbly during happy hour, but loved their offerings. I also tried the Cowgirl Creamery fromage blanc, and it was delicious! I had come from dinner next door at 54 Mint and this cheese was served with honey and jam, so it was almost like dessert. There are several more cheeses and light bites offered. The ambiance is dark and wood heavy, with wine racks covering one side and the bar running along most of the opposite side. IMO, they play great music here - I heard some Aaliyah and India Arie, to name a few. Service was straightforward albeit a little brisk despite it not being super busy. Overall, I would come back if I were ever in Walnut Creek again and want a solid happy hour. read more

My favorite wine bar in Walnut Creek! Residual Sugar can just have all of my money... yes, just take it all please! Awesome wines, amazing atmosphere! I've been here for date nights, with friends, and even solo and have always had a wonderful experience. Loooove their Pinot Noir selection here! It's a red wine lover's dream, and they are STACKED to the max baby! This is one of the rare places where I will actually drink a Rosé and or a sparkling wine because they are of high quality. Despite my happy hour obsession, I have never come here during happy hour. Their wines by the glass can be on the pricey side, but the quality is just unreal. I've bought bottles here as well and the prices are pretty decent depending on what you purchase. The staff here is incredibly knowledgeable! I feel like I can ask them anything and they will have all of the answers. The service is exceptional! One of the bartenders once let me sample their oldest dessert wine. Let me tell you... it was soooo delicious! I can't remember what year it was, but I'm certain that the bottle must be worth a fortune! The ambiance here is ridiculous! Intimate, dark, and sultry. It exudes romance for sure! I mean, there are date night vibes all up and down this joint! I love the variety of music played here. On Friday and Saturday nights, they bump old school hip hop and slightly ratchet hits right before closing! I really do love them for that! Just because I'm being bougie right NOW doesn't mean that I don't wanna be a little hood later! ;) Parking is hit or miss. There's a mix of street parking, a few lots, and even parking right in front if you play your cards right. I've actually never eaten here before, but I've heard that they have some nice light bites. I am planning on trying them out for happy hour soon. On a side note... the last time that I truly got hammered was when I was here. Yep... at this wine bar. Some good red wine will do that to you!
