My only complaint is that the pie is so incredibly thin that you need more of it to really be satisfied. I constantly compare this square pizza to Bruno's in Clifton, NJ and have to give Bruno's the edge. The pie there is just substantially more filling than the palermo here. I've also had the chicken parm and penne dinner here and it was above average. All in all, if you want flavor and a great pizza, get the palermo pie. It is on the brink of epic. read more

My car smelled like Grandmas amazing sauce had been seasoned and simmering on low all day! The pie was amazing. Exterior crust nice and crunchy and interior crust(center pie) was soft. It had a thin layer of mozzarella cheese on top of dough -Barely noticeable. In final it was topped with an Amazing lightly chunked tomato, garlic and hint of basil sauce! I think I already said too much, but the pie is serious yall! A must try most def and reasonably priced at $16. Was actually going to go to the thai restaurant down the street... but ended up waiting for a phone call, and had to find a quick place for a very quick lunch. Ordered an eggplant slice, and a plain slice.... Pizza was amazing. Plain slice was really good. Sauce had a nice flavor, and the dough was also very good. As for the eggplant... much better. nice slice of eggplant, with some ricotta, and some fresh basil. Turned out... it was good, but not mind-blowing. The sauce was nice, with little chunks of garlic, but it didn't rise to the level of extraordinary. I love the Palermo pie. This was my fiirst time back since their rennovation/expansion. I will definitely return to dine in for a course or two or three. I got take out; slice of Palermo and a ham&prov sub. The Palermo pie is heaven, crisp super thin, malty melt in your mouth crust covered with fresh mozarella and draped in a fresh sweet and savory crushed tomato marinara. It is seasoned perfectly with lots of garlic and fresh herbs. The restaurant is clean and neat. The waitstaff is courteous and friendly. Perfect example is the very burnt sausage delivered in the pic below. Called to complain & was offered a $5 credit or a replacement to be delivered right away. This little bastion of Italian pizza parlors makes some of the tastiest meals I've had in some time. Lunches are great and the portions are huge. I was there with a friend of mine, Joe Gatt who is a retired Executive Chef, and he loves the place. If you go for lunch try to get there about 1pm. For dinners after 6 you may have to wait. Parking can be found a block south in a little lot next to Topaz Thai which is also wonderful. If they have the veal bracciole, get it. If fish is your true love, they make a delicious flounder francaise. Their thin crust pizza is a winner. BYOB and cash only. read more

I simply adore this place. I went here on an early friday night and was instantly sat down. I pretty much knew what i wanted (i had my heart set on the palermo) based off of the reviews yelpers had left. In addition to that we ordered calamari and got two homeade sodas. Everything was fantastic! The calamari was crispy and cooked to perfection and the marinara served with it was delicious. The pizza arrived after 20 mins, so make sure you have good company or a great phone app to keep you occupied during that time. We didnt mind waiting because we knew the pizza would be as fresh as could be. When it arrived it was an absolute assault on my senses, it smelled incredible and when i finally bit into it, i found what i had been missing all my life....:) Byob and cash only guys. I approach the front and there's no one there. I see a woman employee and call out to her, she looks at me and keeps walking slowly away. Then she comes back when she hears the phone ring, answering it and again completely ignoring me despite the fact that I'm standing in front of her in plain sight. I guess a potential phone call takes priority over a paying customer inside your facility ready to give you business. I even tried to get the attention of the guy I had spoken to, now in the back kitchen. He also ignored me. I had nothing left to do but walk out hungry. It's been 1 1/2 hours and so far all I've gotten is some bread and salad. The waitress hasn't stopped by so I can't find out if I'll ever get my dinner. Looking for my "go to Pizza Place" since Scottos closed. Well, I am still looking. Ordered 3 plain cheese pies over the weekend figuring you need more than one to make a good judgment. The pizza looked amazing with plenty of melted cheese and a good portion of sauce too. But that is where it stopped for me. The crust was hard. Not real chewy but just hard. Also there was not a lot of seasoning so the sauce was pretty plain. So many of my Belleville, NJ friends recommended it but really was not impressed. When I went to pick up the pies, the place was packed. So I will stop back again for a meal or pick up a few meals to bring home. Horrible server service, waited over an hour and 15 minutes for food. We had to ask multiple times to finally give us bread for the table then 40 minutes later salads that were sitting out that we didn't order.... sat in at the same time and order food as the couple next us, they were done with their meals and we still hadn't gotten ours. 2 other tables sat after us and got food before us. So, my boyfriend and I go back and forth with, "Where should we eat?" and he always replies, "I don't know." Honestly, though, La Sicilia is near and dear to my heart and I always want to say, "La Sicilia!!!!" The waitresses always recognize us and the fusilli bolognese is really amazing. We're from Montclair and there are so many pizza/ Italian places and they DON'T serve fresh pasta and if they do, it comes with some boring la-di-da, tasteless buttery-type sauce. I like to cook so if I'm going to eat out, I would prefer if the pasta didn't come from the same kind of Ronzoni box that I cook with, you know what I mean? Getting back to La Sicilia, we always order the same things: fusilli bolognese and the chicken sorrento with rice. We did have one bad bread experience, but that was one out of seventy-five visits so I will forgive them for the not-so-great bread. Usually, they serve us a salad first, which I dress in parmesan cheese, hot pepper flakes, and fresh ground pepper. Sometimes, when I'm feeling a bit piggish, I order a slice of the palermo pie because sometimes heaven does come in the form of a pizza. Right now, as I sit here typing this, I'm really disappointed they're closed for renovations. La Sicilia, if you can here, "PLEASE REOPEN BECAUSE I NEED SOME BOLOGNESE! PUH-LEASE!" What an amazing place. This is like the ideal casual Italian-American restaurant. It looks like a extremely busy pizzeria inside. Seating is communal as needed as they packed you in; this is done in a friendly way though, not like places such as Dominick's in the Bronx or Grimaldi's in Brooklyn. Tablemates in general are very friendly here, and even introduce themselves to each other. Service on drinks was weird, as you tell the waitress what you want, she'll bring you glasses and a bowl of ice, but you go grab the drinks out of the cooler. They had a good selection of sodas including Manhattan Special, so I was happy. Giuseppe Ali, the old Sicilian owner was walking around directing traffic, making sure everyone is happy, and busting balls of course. He was definitely a highlight of the place, and seemed to be in love with his restaurant. While all the other food I saw here look amazing, I came here specifically for one thing, and thankfully it lived up to the immense hype. The Palermo pie was one of the best and most unique pizzas I've had. First off the crust is very interesting. Its sort of like a grandma pie, but it has a consistency more similar to the pizza al taglio I had in Italy. Center pieces were soft and spongy, where the side pieces married that texture with a soft crispness along the edge. It tasted like great fresh bread. On top of this crust they put their fresh mozzarella, and on top of that goes the sauce. The fresh mozzarella adds a little milkiness but mostly just a goey texture, as the combo of tomatoes used in the sauce are the star of this pizza. They are intensely bright and flavorful, and very plentiful. Supplemented by some good fruity olive oil, herbs, parmigiana and some garlic, this is one of the most flavorful sauces I've had. The interior of the pizza can be a little messy, but it has so much flavor I'm not holding that against it. The complex combination of textures and flavors on this pizza force me to put it on the top tier where it belongs. Did I mention that this thing was big enough for 4 people and costs $13? For dessert we split a sfogliatello, a cannolo, and a tartufo. The tartufo tasted freshly made as opposed to the frozen-solid crap you usually get. In the center were slices of pistachio which seemed to have been soaked in blood orange juices. The sfogliatello was awesome. Nice crisp shell with an absolutely luscious, fresh sweet filling with orange rind. The cannolo was also noteworthy. Freshly made shell with a filling that contain anise in addition to the ricotta impastada! Never saw that addition before but it WORKED. Sicily is known for its desserts, and these did not disappoint. I almost want to say that its worth the trip just for dessert. This is what every Italian restaurant should be serving. Freshly made, simple-but-delicious food made with great ingredients. Pet peeves like communal seating and cash only cease to be problems when you get the food right. I had a very bad day getting to this place, and after eating here I felt like it was worth it. You know when you pick up a slice a pizza and the cheese pulls away and starts to fall off when you pick it up....that is this pizza. I used to love this place but it's not what it used to be. The pizza is still decent, it used to be awesome. The current owners are not as friendly as the old guy who used to own it, and I hate to be mean, but they really don't know how to make great Italian food anymore. I ordered some food to go recently. I ordered a $18 seafood combo that came with only 2 flavorless shrimp, super rubbery calamari, and at least four of the mussels and clams were closed, which means they were dead and never opened after cooking (they should NOT have been served). When I called to complain that the dish only included 2 shrimp, I was told that only 2 shrimp was standard because the dish includes many mussels and clams. Whatever. That would have been ok, if the rest of the seafood wasn't so bad. The tomato sauce it was cooked in was way too salty. I also ordered Eggplant Parmigiana, it was also awful, no flavor, no PARMIGIANA cheese (hence the name) just flavorless mozzarella and that super salty tomato sauce. Why, why, why do restaurants not season the bread crumbs that the eggplant is fried in? or include parmigiana cheese? I don't get it. If they can't get the seafood or the eggplant right they need to take them off the menu, because it's just disappointing when you order them. I think the only reason why I am giving it 2 stars as opposed to one is because of how great it USED to be. I came in with a friend to what was a completely empty one side of the restaurant. Made it really akward for the meal, as the place did not close for another two hours.The whole service literally involved minimal conversation and I actually wanted to tip the bus boy as opposed to the waitress. Can't comment much on the sit-down dinner service here as I always get takeout (although I have seen some excellent looking meals on my walk in and out), but the pizza here is top notch. As everyone says - get the Palermo pie. It's sort of a grandma pie, but inverted - the cheese is on the bottom and the sauce is on the top. Generally I'm not huge on saucy pies, but the amount of herbs and garlic they have on it... I'm drooling just writing this review haha. You can tell when you walk in the place that it's legit. Came here with my coworkers today for a birthday lunch and I have to say it was the right choice. My coworkers have been raving about this place for months now and for some reason I had never tried it. I figured what a perfect reason to go since we were celebrating two birthdays in our group. Unless you know it is there you can easily over look it while driving down the street. *This place is cash only so be aware!* When you walk in you are greeted by the amazing smell of all the delicious food they are cooking. You can see all the amazing looking pizza they have. You can carry out, get delivery or dine in at the restaurant. The six of us sat at a table in the front room, I didn't notice the room off to the side until a waitress walked over there. One of the ladies in our group knew our waitress and she gave us a sample of one of the their pizzas! Sadly I don't know what the name was, but it had the sauce on top of the cheese and it was amazing. After a lot of deliberation we all finally figured out what we wanted, everything sounded so good it was hard to choose. Everyone got something different and I don't remember all the orders but I got the rigatoni bolognese. When the food arrived each dish looked better than the next. The portion sizes are very generous and you can tell that it's all freshly made. The rigatoni tasted just as good as it looked and I was very happy with my choice. Everyone loved their meals and had some to take home for later! In my opinion, this is the best Italian food in this area and is definitely worth trying out. read more

In anticipation of a long wait, we around 8.30pm on Sat night. No wait for the communal table. Service was prompt and quite cordial. We had to try the Palermo pie and fusili with bolognese. And also a couple of those stuffed hot peppers. We definitely over ordered but I figured we can doggie bag them. The Palermo pie was just as everyone raved about. An interesting take on pizza - more marinara than cheese which I like. I am definitely coming back for it. The fusili was perfectly al dente and it has the home made feel. Goes quite well with the bolognese sauce. To end the meal, I was so stuffed so asked to get lobster tail and cannoli to go. I just finished it this morning - the lobster tail is filled with lemon cream and crunchy on the outside. The cannoli's ricotta filling is nice and smooth with just the right amount of sweetness. I see other patrons ordering other dishes so definitely would like to try that next time though it's going to be a tough competition from the Palermo. Dilemma dilemma! Growing up in an Italian household where pasta was the regular twice a week and my mother slaved over large pots of sauce for hours upon hours, I've always been a little biased when it comes to Italian food. La Sicilia puts together some fantastic dishes! I admit I have not tried their pizza once, but the lobster or shrimp fra diavolo is outstanding, as well as their bolognese and vodka sauces. The pastas are always cooked perfectly and it is undeniable the the sauces are prepared to order; the flavors really shine. I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fabulous, homey atmosphere, quick and attentive service, and low prices that totally do not reflect the authentic, rock solid quality Italian food.
