This was my go to Mexican place in HP for years. After the pandemic, they decided to triple or quadruple their prices and start wd talking about their "Chef". The food has always been great but as a long time customer, I felt ripped off. Haven't been back since. Tacos El Norte is now our go to. Dona Patti's is also excellent. Something that I didn't notice prior to coming in was that only the first round of chips and salsa was complimentary, which was a bit of a buzz kill, I had a particular hankering for chips this time :). I looked thru the menu and decided upon the skirt steak burrito $7.65 and for the kiddos I ordered a couple items from the kiddie menu. Beef tostada $4.89 and the cheese Quesadilla $3.50. Both kiddie meals had a hefty portion of beans and rice which was a I thought a good value for a kids menu item. I'd highly recommend both as my kids devoured the food. The kids meals came out first which is always a good thing when kids are involved. I shared the burrito with my wife and the server was kind enough to actually cut the burrito in half and gave us separate plates without us even requesting. Seasoning on the food was spot-on, very yummy and my half Burrito was filling. I definitely appreciated the service. Pricing a bit on the higher side for the entree items $18 and greater. We had forgotten that aspect since last coming here probably over 4 years ago. There are many options on the menu here to chose from. Various combinations and options, from tacos to different combinations. We ordered a burrito to share and a kids meal for each child. The kids meal quesadilla came with one whole round tortilla and beans and rice. The kids meal tostada also came with beans and rice, the portion for that seemed decent even for an adult. Food is decent, definitely more Mexican than American. Draw back is the lack of unlimited chips and salsa and the pricing is a bit higher for what I'd expect. We were considering Uncle Julio's prior to coming over and once we sat down and realized no unlimited chips we regretted coming and should have gone to Uncle Julio's instead. read more

Their tortillas seem fresh and delicious but the chicken burrito I bought was just kind of sloppy and wet, and it was kind of pricey. Their chips and salsa are small, (we had four people and the chips were gone in 2 minutes) and when I asked for a refill (which I'm sure you have to pay extra for) they said ok and then just never brought it. Prices subject to change. (No duh, but why put that on the front of a menu?!) This was a total d-bag move whoever designed this menu. Atmosphere wise, the place needs a total cleaning. We got there during lunch and 4 tables needed bussing. The place itself looks rather dinghy. If the food wasn't gonna give you heartburn then the super loud Mexican hip hop music was gonna do that all its own. The music is way too loud and obnoxious here. Margaritas were not bad and pretty potent and reasonably priced. I ordered the premium margarita with Patron and cost $11.99. It was good with a nice balance of sweet and tart. The burrito was a clear winner with abundant meat, avocado, onion, cheese, etc. You can choose between green or red sauce but the green sauce was super delicious. I got a combo special with Chile Relleno, one enchilada, and 1 taco. The Chile Relleno and taco were delicious, the enchilada was not. Would I come back here? Perhaps not. Really great and gooey on the inside but cooked perfectly on the outside as well. They were big too I could barely finish one half. The steak taco tasted pretty plain, just like any ordinary steak taco, was pretty dry but put some salsa on it and it was better. Nachos with chorizo were as expected. The star of the night were the spicy pork PICADITAS. It's a 70/30 meat to caramelized onion ratio not unsimilar to the Cantonese-style sweet rib char siu. Curb appeal: Los Mogotes looks like a hole in a wall from the outside but the inside is clean and spacious. Staff: Service is friendly and fast. Food: Large menu with mostly basic, solid, authentic dishes. No frills - but that is the point. It totally hits the spot. Tastes like homemade. Ambiance: Sometimes it is empty, sometimes it is buzzing. Lots of Spanish speaking diners. It feels so authentic I feel like I need a passport :) That does not mean it is not welcoming. When and why to visit: This is it for a solid, good quality take-out. This is a good local Mexican restaurant. My family and I have been coming here for years, especially since Tres Hermanas closed. Recently got the chance to come back post-pandemic and found the interior refreshed; the food remains excellent. My usual dish is the huarache with carne asada. The steak is seared crisp and flavorful. And it is a reasonable portion size so that I don't feel overstuffed as I often do if getting a whole entree plate. My family says the rest of the menu is above-average; the bites I have taken confirm their opinion. I'm glad that the management opened both an outdoor section and reopened the dining room. Their inflexibility again reminding me of the DMV. Flash forward to today...when I was Actually able to order the meal I wanted just five minutes before the cut off time! I was there in a group of 7 teachers who had come there for lunch. We ordered and ate our food with zero problem. (Although Tacos El Norte does serve bigger/yummier portions! We went here because this was nearby.) Anyhow, next we went to pay and this is where we ran into trouble! Each of us wanted to pay for our own lunches, but couldn't do that because our server wouldn't allow us to. Then, on top of the mediocre service we got. (Not like she ever asked us how our meals were.) we were charged, not an 18% tip because we were a group of 7, but a 21% tip. Leading us to believe that the reason she wouldn't split the bill was to automatically charge us the 21%!! In the end, we asked multiple times if we could pay separately and couldn't. While I was grateful the place was nearby and glad they were Actually willing to serve me the food on the menu this time...the treatment we received in the end did Not justify the 21% tip we were Forced to pay! In conclusion, if you would like much more friendly service and better portion sizes go to Tacos El Norte in Highwood where people know how to: smile, serve great food, and divide up a bill so that multiple people can pay for their own entrees! There is good parking available in there lot. Even more in back. Having Mexican? Gotta start with guacamole, chips, and margaritas!!!! Their margaritas aren't bad. Not the best in the north shore, but a good one. The guacamole was definitely fresh and good, but it was messing something to give it some flair...jalapeños, cilantro...not sure. Blandish. My husband loved the chips. For the main course, my husband got a burrito suizo style with skirt steak. He lived it. It was GRANDE. I had a combination plate with an enchilada, taco, and chili ranchero. The best thing on my plate was the enchilada. If we come back, definitely getting a plate of those. The service was quite off putting. They only had two waitresses working on a Saturday night. That's tough for them to handle all the business well. We had to wait quite a while to order even drinks, let alone food. I love their flour tortillas. You can even buy some to go and take home for Taco Tuesday or whenever you like to do tacos at home! Started ordering a lot of takeout during covid and this is a go-to for HP Mexican. Good portions, prices, and the stay is super friendly. The fajitas are great, my wife adores the shrimp cocktail dish and we all love the tacos...safe procedures as well. I vividly remember the burritos and quesadillas as being outstanding and things have NOT changed. The place is much bigger than I when I was there last and it's decor is authentic Mexican. The friendly staff is in no shortage either. Tonight I had the Chicken Burrito and a regular Coke (I, too meant to get the Mexican Coke but forgot). The food was awesome. I'm torn here. If I'm writing this review as my past self, a proud carnivore, I'd say that this is the best Mexican food around, super authentic, lots of choices. Great burritos and tacos. But if I'm writing this review as myself now, essentially a vegetarian, I have to say this place leaves something to be desired. My boyfriend and I came here for lunch and both ordered the vegetarian burrito-- he got the regular, I got the junior. They came out, appearing to be the exact same size. We found out later that the difference was that mine only contained cheese, rice, sour cream, and refried beans... His had avocado, lettuce, and tomato. Mine tasted fine... but what was I paying for, in terms of veggie options? No avocado, no peppers, no onions. Plus, I have to doubt that the refried beans were actually legitimately vegetarian. Which also brings me to my complaint about this place across my dietary changes: the fact that they don't have any whole black or pinto beans, only the refried variety. Not a lot of opportunity for healthy eating here. We also got an order of the guacamole, which was all right (when is mushed-up avocado bad?), but which-- like the other things we ordered-- benefited a great deal by the addition of the three salsas provided as condiments when you dine in. read more

I'd give you more specifics on what dishes are the best, but the names are all in Spanish and unfortunately I only speak English and a not so useful language. Why 3 instead of 5 stars: it seems like I'm always getting over charged for something here. Once I ordered a side of mole(which was delicious) and I was charged 4 dollars. The beer is inexpensive but the mixed drinks were very expensive. I really like the food here, but have taken family members here who haven't been nuts about it. In general, I'm a big fan of this place but it's possible that I have my go to's and can look beyond some of the pitfalls.
