Oily pastas and a bit overpriced but convenient. I'd say 2.5/5 The restaurant itself is pretty spacious and there's a good amount of seating indoors and outdoors. I usually get it to-go though. The tables could be cleaned more often because more often than not the tables are sticky or stained. Also don't expect your order to be filled super quickly. You get a number on your receipt and wait for the digital readers to call out your number. There are games by the cashier and a pool table if you feel so inclined (bring coins!) I'm guilty of regularly getting the pesto and penne (with eggplant and onion and garlic bread that's way too tough to eat). Every time it's oily and I feel gross after but I come back because it's on north side, it's carb-y and it's filling. I haven't tried their salads for this reason. I have not eaten at La Val's Pizza in many years, so I wanted to see what has changed. There was only one occupied table when we walked in, and they were already eating. It was not a very good experience. At first we were tempted by their sandwiches, but eventually we decided we had to have pizza if we ate at La Val's. We ordered a medium LaVal's Special: Pepperoni, Salami, Linguica, Beef, Black Olives, Sausage, Mushrooms, Bell Peppers and Onions. $15.50. Before I left the counter, I asked if we would get a tag/card with number on it or something like that. They told me the number was on my receipt. We waited for a rather long time for them to call our number. Remember, the only other people in here with us were already eating. Eventually I walked to the counter to check on our pizza. When I got there, I saw a pizza just sitting there. I asked if that pizza was ours, and it was. So I picked the pizza up and started to walk back to our table. A few moments later, I quickly put it down. The aluminum pizza plate was searing hot! I guess it hadn't been sitting there very long. I made an impromptu oven mitt out of a thick stack of napkins and hurried over to our table before before my fingers got burnt. How did they expect me to carry this around? While we were eating, my friend noticed two digital readouts as you looked backed up towards the entrance. Eventually we figured out that's how they announce your order is ready. Alas, no matter how I try to urge on the order taker to ensure that my pizza gets more than a few random sprinkles of toppings, I get more crust than anything else. The pizza here is REALLY, and I mean [ REALLY ] salty, so much so that I could not finish the meat combo pizza or let alone the pepperoni pizza, which has so much over use of pepperoni that is was like eating pure salt drenched in oil, absolutely disgusting and inedible food here ! The only item that was decent was the plain cheese pizza, with actually had a nice herb taste, at the same time however, there was also way to much marinara sauce. The pastas are bland and overcooked, and the inside of the establishment is unkept and outdated. [UPDATE] The spinach-pesto pizza and the Hawaiian pizza are a bit better than the regular meat with marinara sauce. The sweetness of the pineapple on the Hawaiian pizza balanced the saltiness the marinara sauce, and the Canadian bacon was a bit better and less salty than the other meats I've had here. The pesto pizza had the healthful addition of spinach, and the feta cheese and red onions where a nice addition. I actually liked this particular pizza this time around ! read more

NASTY pizza. Had a few slices here for dinner and the crust ruined the entire pizza. To start, the top of the pizza had about a liter of grease sitting on top of the cheese. Unless you grabbed a few paper towels to dry up the grease, the pizza is simply inedible. The crust, like the top of the pizza, was equally, if not more disgusting. It was thin (less than 2mm I would say) and almost soaked through with grease. The kind folks of La Val might argue that it's high quality olive oil they're using, but in the end, it comes down to how it tastes, not the quality of ingredients you use that you'll get judged on. For me, the taste was not there. I would recommend somewhere like Little Caesers over La Vals. read more

I've had La Val's nearly every week this semester, and it's not because I crave it constantly, but it's free food that's always offered at a club meeting on campus. I've eaten it quite enough to notice that there are a couple of inconsistencies with the food that they put out, and it's worth mentioning so that others know what to expect. I usually only ever get three different kinds of pizza from here and they all fall on different points of a spectrum: cheese, margarita, and the traditional spaghetti. For the most part, I always take a gamble when I grab the cheese pizza. It has been the most inconsistent one by far. There are occasions when the cheese just melts in your mouth or pulls apart in a string-like fashion, but there are also times when the cheese is so overly cooked, you get none of those desired flavors, and all that's left in your mouth is the aftertaste of burnt cheese (which isn't a terrible flavor, but it's not THE flavor you were expecting or wanted). The margarita one I would say falls in the middle. It has an amazing taste, which is owed to the beautiful combination of cheese and garlic, but sometimes they overdo the latter, and so you're essentially left with garlic breath strong enough to ward off a vampire, but it's tasteful nonetheless. The only pizza out of the three that I've found to be consistent is the traditional spaghetti, which is essentially "spaghetti and meatballs" on a pizza without the spaghetti but exceptional meatballs worthy enough of rivaling IKEA's. And although people might have different preferences in regards to the amount of grease they want on their pizza, I personally think it's too much, but it's nothing a couple of napkins can't solve. I will say though, the spicy chicken wings are also a favorite of mine from La Val's, but lately I've had troubles with their portions. The wings are exceptionally small and appear to keep shrinking every week. It makes sense given that they're appetizers, but never have I seen wings so small. They're also advertised as spicy, but I never quite get a kick from them. They're mild at most. Overall, La Val's is a great place to eat pizza if you find yourself in the Berkeley area. It's a nice little place with plenty of options, and although the one's I had haven't been consistent, it's always worth trying other flavors in hopes of finding something that's good for you. Who knows, they might make the most exceptional vegetarian pizzas that I've never given a try, but you definitely can. read more

The other day I went to La Val's for the first time! The restaurant is so nice and there's tons of seating. If you want to sit down and do some homework in a quiet spot (until it hits dinner time) there are lots of comfortable booths or seats! I had the Alfredo pasta. The portions are large and very creamy. To be honest, I prefer Gypsy's pasta to this, further to the other side of campus, but it was pretty good pasta for the most part. It comes with a few pieces of garlic bread, but the bread was too sour and hard for me to eat easily. Still, the staff who rang me up were super sweet and made the experience enjoyable. The location is awesome if you're near the middle of Cal's campus and hungry. There's always tons of students around this area so it can definitely get bus at certain periods. I ate here a lot when I was an undergraduate - mostly because there wasn't anywhere else to eat on Northside. Back in my day there was still a theater group downstairs. I've tried their grilled chicken sandwich, and it's not bad given it's only $5. Today, I decided to drop by since I was out of cash, and ended up ordering the California club special (turkey, bacon, and avocado). The sandwich was pretty well made, and it was nice that they toasted the bread. However, my sandwich barely had any avocado in it. Good pizza and pasta.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is akin to Gypsy's; it's a very classic Italian-American-style joint with ample booth-and-table seating area and a small arcade. You order at the front and pick it up when they call your number; as with most places in Berkeley, you do not get waited on, and everything is self-serve/self-cleanup. I love love love the pizza here. It is thin crust, well seasoned, and surprisingly close to Italian-style (e.g. not doughy and overly greasy like American Papa John's). For its price, it's definitely worth ordering. The pasta is comparable, again, to Gypsy's pasta, but while Gypsy's overloads on the salt and sauce, La Val's goes heavy on the grease. I ordered a marinara dish which is usually more refreshing than cream or oil-based pasta dishes since it's just tomato sauce, but there was a thick layer of red grease on top of my pasta! I was able to pour about a tablespoon full of it out by tipping my to-go box to the side. A tablespoon! It seemed unnecessary, and even underseasoned--rather bland. The pasta itself was cooked perfectly but the oiliness of the sauce was a turnoff. TL;DR: Just come here for the pizza. Love that La Val's delivers too. Yay! read more

La Val's Pizza is the first eatery that I ever frequented in Berkeley. Located on Euclid Street, between the Graduate Theological Union and the university of California, it attracts many students and professors alike. There is a good variety of pizza styles, and other Italian standards. Salads are good, draft beers are excellent. All are very affordable. Pro games are broadcast on the televisions that are high on the wall in the main dining area. All in all, the atmosphere is quite open and friendly, and yet there is enough privacy so that one can meet with friends and not feel interrupted. read more

Went here for dinner after a long walk from Berkeley Rose Gardens. Very lively shop, with fresh pizzas made visibly to the customers. Warmly heated and brightly lit, La Val's provides an excellent atmosphere to its customers. The pizza, on the other hand, was a bit underwhelming. I'm unsure if it's because the pizza was well built up by a friend, or because it truly did not have a strong flavor, but nonetheless, the pizza was not as good as I had hoped. After waiting for almost 20 minutes, the California Barbecue chicken pizza did not carry the strong barbecue taste that defines a barbecue pizza. That being said, the cheese and veggie toppings on the pizza were very fresh and tasteful, although not good enough to bring me back. read more

I came here a lot when I was still a student. I know they are famous for their pizza, but I mostly ordered their sandwiches and pastas. I remember back in the day my personal favor was their Pesto pasta. Nah, don't waste your time searching the menu for it, it's not on the menu lol. There was a time they had promoting going on over the summer I happened to tried it. OMG, it was so good! Then everytime I came I alwasy order their pesto pasta. However, after the promotion was over, they didn't put the pesto pasta on the menu. And they hired a new girl who didnt know much about the menu. So everytime I went there to order the pesto pasta, that girl would modify a current item to make it my pesto pasta. The funny thing was, she was always able to find different combinations to make my pesto pasta happen. So everytime I went, I would end up paying a different price. Sometimes I needed to add 50 cents to the item she modify based on, sometimes $1.50. And I had no idea how she did it, otherwise I would remember the formula for the cheapest one to save some money. If you are just looking to grab a quick slice and don't need any frills, La Val's offers a relaxing spot to do so. I have to give it up for La Val's. I recently re-discovered this place and want to give kudos to an old Berkeley classic. I'd compare the quality of these pies to Arinell's Pizza, except I actually like La Val's slices better. The crust is chewier and the cheese is more stringy and melty. This isn't a place to go out of your way for, but if you are near campus, the Euclid Ave location is a nice place to kill some time. They offer a game room, many televisions to watch ESPN, and my favorite, a dog friendly shaded outdoor patio where you can soak in the ambience! It is so much more relaxing than Telegraph Ave. The vibe is totally laid back and unpretentious and makes you feel like you are back in a small college town. read more
