Lai Wah is my go to Chinese takeout restaurant. They have plenty of variety and something for everyone. Some of the dishes can be hit or miss but still a solid takeout spot. You can order over the phone or online. They are very quick and orders are ready when quoted. Some of my family's favorite menu items are the sweet and sour chicken, lo mein, sesame chicken, and broccoli beef. They started as a full service restaurant at the SW corner of Cty Rd 42 & Cedar, and move to the present location at 140th & Pilot Knob Road more than 25 years ago. If we could give it a zero we would. As avid Chinese lovers we love the opportunity to try new places. Unfortunately this has to be one of the worst places south of the river. Not only were we missing itema, got wrong items, but we also found metal shavings in our food from a wire scrub brush which makes sense with the soapy taste. I also tried their try 3 apps, egg rolls, chicken wings, and cheese wontons... and all where over fried and unable to get to the inside contents. This little hole-in-the-strip-mall turned out to be surprisingly tasty. The vegetable egg rolls seemed quite home-made, with a hearty, cinnamon-bias and crunchy cabbage. We ordered Beijing Chicken and Sai Dai Pork, as neither of us were familiar with these dishes. The pork was particularly enjoyable, with a smoky grill flavor, a gooey brown sauce and a good spice kick. I don't like it when Chinese food is drenched in oily, generic, too-sweet, runny brown sauce. This sauce was none of those things. The chicken was more familiar, bearing strong similarity to sweet and sour chicken. However, it had a significantly stronger spice kick and was more sour than sweet. It was definitely not stingy with the onions, green peppers and pineapples, like many typical S&S chicken dishes. We ate in, and the decor did not initially inspire confidence, however I recommend you don't judge this book by the cover and try them out if you're in the area. The only reason it's down a star is the lack of ambience, as others have reported. Got it for delivery for a group of 7. Food was fast and great! Nothing to complain about on my end.

So we ordered from grub hub at first 30-40 minutes for a delivery that turned into 90 minutes. I'm not sure if they've changed spices or ingredients but the food we got was gross, this was the last chance I just thought someone screwed up last time but we won't be ordering from Lai Wah again. Wow was this gross. We ordered orange chicken, moo goo gai pan/ fried rice combo dinner, egg drop soup, dumplings... $31. First off, moo goo gai pan is supposed to be in a white sauce. They did it in brown teriyaki. Did they just not want to make the sauce? The chicken was dehydrated, the veggies frozen, they put canned mushrooms in the soup. Just a big ole NO!!! Don't go there. The sesame chicken was delicious. We ate there and it came out fast and the batter was still crispy. The veggie lo mein had a good flavor but the noodles were ramen noodles and it tasted like they used the ramen flavor packet, added veggies and soy sauce, then cooked it in a wok together...not what I expected from an authentic looking restaurant. I will go back and get the sesame chicken again but will try something else. I would also take it to go since the inside is much smaller than I thought it would be with only 3 tables and I believe they may have only had water to drink. Lai Wah is the best Chinese restaurant in Apple Valley, Eagan, Rosemount, IGH, Lakeville, Farmington, etc., etc... So many times my wife and I have tried other Chinese restaurants to be greatly disappointed. Places like Eddie Change pop up and serve yellow, bright yellow fried rice that taste identical to something out of a box, like Uncle Ben's or something like that. Law Wah is classic. The owners are from China! I highly recommend the Chicken Lo Mein, Sesama Chicken (it's awesome) and any of their fried rice. They can be somewhat slightly inconsistent, except when the dad/father is cooking. He's a master! So if you're near this Chinese restaurant, do NOT hesitate to give them a shot. Pretty good food for the price. The woman I usually order from can be a little abrupt and she doesn't like you using credit cards for small orders, but I kind of like the way she answers the phone with "Lai Wai, what you want?" The food quality is consistent. I wouldn't recommend eating in. Can be warm in the summer and not really sure why they have a dining room. We had the beef lo mein which was flavorless and lacked depth of other lo mein dishes, the sesame chicken which was tough and didn't have that distinct crisp fried coating and tender chicken with that sweet robust sauce, and the beef and broccoli which was soggy and overcooked. We've been patronizing Laiwah for over 20 years. However, lately it would seem the younger generation has taken over the restaurant. It's evidenced by the use of Uber Eats, GrubHub delivery options. The food used to be packaged in the white Chinese boxes or paper pails and orders were packed in a simple brown paper bag. There seemed to be some quality but now there's none. Orders are now put in plastic containers and wrapped in a plastic bag. On our order the chicken wings were burned, small and tasteless. Additionally, two orders of chicken fried rice, chicken lo mein and egg rolls came to near $50. When you walk in there's a table indicating due to Covid19 there's a price increase of 15%; something they don't tell you over the phone. We patronize other food places in the Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan area and none of them have increased their prices like this during the pandemic.
