We came here after going through the Erie Canal in order to cool off. The ice cream here is very overpriced and, while the flavors are creative and imaginative, not worth it. The whipped cream is also disgusting. The taste is fairly reminiscent of old dirty gym socks. I do not recommend. When I complained about the whipped cream and asked for them to remake my ice cream without it, I was told, very rudely, to just scrape it off. She refused to remake it. I had to ask another server to remake it for me. I hate to say that I am very unimpressed. Not with the ice cream, but with the customer service. I will not be returning to this shop. read more

A great local ice cream shop making delicious homemade goodies. They use many VERY local ingredients from other local food destinations like DiCamillo's and Chrusciki Bakery goods to Paula's Donuts and Labatt Beer. Many everyday regular flavors and some that just sound like fun also dot the menu. This day was the great sale, where there is a discount on oll over stock of ice cream pints. We got in wand scored what we wanted, but by middle of the sale hours more than a few were gone. The wait staff was incredibly rude, we were in line for quite awhile and I never heard one of them say "hello" or "thank you for coming" They are known for their homemade artisan ice creams, but mine was very watery and tasteless and my daughters had a bleachy flavor that was very strong. My boyfriend has the biggest sweet tooth - an even better one than me. He suggested we head over to Lake Effect Ice Cream for some dessert. I have to be honest - I was not feeling it as I just ran my first 1/2 marathon earlier that day. BUT, I sucked it up and we drove out 35 minutes to Lockport. One word. AMAZEBALLS. When you first walk in, the place is very modern and looks like it just went through a recent renovation. The menu looks like it was written with chalk (possibly) detailed descriptions of what is each of the parlor's homemade flavors. The second chalkboard menu sits right above the actual ice cream freezer which as all of the sizes, toppings and sundaes. Every single flavor and sundae looked appealing and I wanted it all. I am a big fan of pistachio so I opted for that. It was delicious and had little white chocolate drops. I usually do not like to bite into hard things in my ice cream - especially since things like white chocolate don't have much flavor until it melts, and since it's been sitting in ice cream, it needs to warm up considerably in my mouth before it will melt. (Maybe i'm just thinking about this too much - it's ice cream, it's cold, its delicious). My boyfriend got the Paula's + public which is has Paula's frycakes with three scoops of ice cream: one scoop of vanilla and two scoops of espresso. I tried a bite of the espresso and it was AMAZING. The expresso flavor was so strong that it was almost bitter but still sweet. Their classic vanilla was so rich and creamy. Despite such a heavy sounding dessert, it really was not all that heavy. It did not overwhelm my mouth and make everything flemy. My other friend had a scope of the London Fog which is their Earl Grey tea ice cream. That was also delicious. It was a much lighter ice cream - a beautiful lavendar color. Before we left, we contemplated getting sponge candy but I opted for getting a pint of the London Fog while my friend who had the London Fog, got a pint of the Espresso. My boyfriend and I each also got an icicle: he got the watermelon and I got the mango honey, which was so sweet but so tastey. The verdict: this place is awesome and was totally worth the drive out. I have to say though, I wish it was maybe 10-15 minutes closer to where I live. The good news/bad news is they sell this stuff at supermarkets. It's about to get reckless and dangerous. The pints are delicious, fatty and also expensive, BUT definitely worth every penny. Enjoy! read more

Love this place! While I enjoy Perry's at all the other ice cream places, it's nice to have different options at Lake Effect, and made in house! Love Paula's Donuts (even had it in an ice cream cake, which was amazing). Staff is always friendly and patient as we sample and try to make up our minds. My only complaint is the pricing. It's a few dollars for one scoop but then only 50 cents for each additional scoop... so yeah it makes you splurge and just get more for a better value, but I would think they'd actually make more money if they charged more reasonable prices for the small. read more

Hubby and I have never been to Lake Effects retail location before but we've bought their ice cream from Tops and enjoyed it emensely. I had heard there are many more flavors available and I've always wanted to check it out. We don't get out to Lockport very often so I was excited when we took a lazy Sunday drive out that way. The block that it's on at Canal street is oddly shaped, and narrow. I don't think you could park in front, but there's plenty of parking in the rear lot. There are well over 20 flavors! Which you can have in a cup, a cone, a sundae, or a pint. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. It wasn't busy, but they were very efficient, which in all made the entire visit more comforting. We decided to choose four pints to take home, which with tax was a little over $17. Not bad! We choose the following: London Fog - Earl Grey tea flavored ice cream with chocolate covered toffee bits. I thought it tastes like cereal milk, not my favorite, but not horrible. The dark gray-black color was a bit of a shocker/put off too. Black Sesame - it tastes like a mild, toasted, not too sweet tahini paste, which I quite liked! It too was the gray-black color, but being called black sesame I kind of expected it. My only complaint would be that I wish there were black sesame seeds mixed in to give it a bit of a crunch. Butter Beer - their version of the Harry Potter interpretation. It quite literally tastes like a buttery ale or pilsner. Not too sweet, but nice. And lastly my favorite of the four, Bourbon & Brown Sugar - the Bourbon flavor is very prominent and the brown sugar gives it a slight caramel flavor that pair very well with one another. I'm telling you folks, it's worth the drive just for this ice cream alone! If you're into the whole artisan/small batch foods, or if you're a die hard foodie I highly recommend this place. read more

Got the black raspberry, the fruity pebble flavor, and a scoop of Paula's glazed donut. And they did NOT disappoint. The black raspberry was solid. The dark chocolate chips throughout were welcomed. Consistency of all flavors were perfect. Large scoops. The fruity pebbles flavor is bright blue, but the flavor is SPOT ON! The Paula's donut flavor is laced with a glazed Paula's donut. This was very surprising but great! I was PLEASANTLY surprised. This place is great. If you're looking for soft serve, sorry they don't have any. We were able to get a pup cup for the pooch for abt 2.75, the one scoop was about 3.25, and two scoop probably 3.99-4.25. It's kinda pricey but the caliber is worth it. Note: we have not been able to visit yet because the ice cream parlor is closed, I assume for the winter. We did find some available at the Lockport Top's supermarket. The frozen hot chocolate ice cream was outstanding. Very creamy and a nice chocolate flavor. It is a bit pricey for supermarket ice cream: $4.29 for 16 ounces compared to $4-5 for 1.5 quarts of the other ice creams. However, it is an artisan brand and locally made, so it's worth the price. I hope that one day we can find the Paula's Donuts ice cream. It is supposed to be excellent as well, with donut pieces in the ice cream. read more

Lake Effect brings big city artisanal ice cream at semi-rural western NY prices to a former Erie canal boom town, which to me assures their long term success. The flavors are inventive and delicious, serving sizes more than ample and while not the very best ice cream I've had, it's up there in the upper echelon of ice cream offerings, and certainly one of the best to be had for miles from their location in Lockport. The line can get pretty long, and snakes around inside, but that will give you ample opportunity to ponder the myriad of unique offerings. Worry not, those of you of fearful palate...there are plenty of excellent renditions of the old standard to keep you happy as well. read more

This place is awesome! It's VERY hard to get me to stray from Perry's Ice Cream. If you're not from the Buffalo area...Perry's is the ice cream that every ice cream stand serves because it's made local here and it's delicious. This place was started by some teachers, their story is pretty neat so look it up if you have time! They make a LOT of different flavors, I get intimidated when it's busy because reading their menu board takes a while, the flavors are incredibly descriptive on their menu board so it will take you a while to decide! They make some very unique flavors too! My husband got one with sesame seeds in it once. So weird but he liked it! I think it's super awesome that they make flavors that revolve around the area too. Even their name "Lake Effect" that's the type of snow we get here. I LOVE that their symbol is a snowflake too because I love snowflakes! This past year they updated their hours so they stayed open all winter which is nice. We Buffalonians still go to ice cream stands when it's snowing! I'm so glad they decided to stay open for that! Also if you're not from the area you can check out the Erie Canal since they are located right on it! They are also a Pokestop and have a LOT of people coming around for the Pokestop and nearby gyms. There are several Pokestops around it, it's THE hotspot in Lockport and when Pokemon Go first came out their parking lot was constantly full of people especially at night! read more

After being a 'long distance' Lake Effect Ice Cream fan down here in the suburbs, I finally got the chance to go to their new shop recently. It is a great location right on the Canal. Really love the simple touches to the design and the overall look. Lots of nice chairs and tables to enjoy either inside or outside and it is very clean and well maintained. I liked the eclectic mix of music played in the shop, too. Staff was friendly too! Then there is the ice cream! Having the whole buffet of flavors in front of you can be overwhelming, but you know there has to be something to suit everyone. I love ice cream and Lake Effect has spoiled me in that I don't even bother with the stores brands anymore. I find their ice cream rich, creamy, and not too overly sweet. There are definitely flavors that I like better than others, but I appreciate the thought put in to trying new combinations and to suit different palates. I thought the price in shop was very reasonable. I got two huge scoops of two different flavors in a fresh and large waffle cone for $4. They have a few 'artisan' sundaes and the only thing I would change is having maybe some other basic toppings to create-you-own sundae. I was hoping they would have peanut butter sauce for one of my favorite flavors (love me some PB!), but I can see how they are keeping the focus on the ice cream which in most cases doesn't need anything additional.
