Dishonest shop that will rip you off. I took my vehicle into the shop to only diagnose an acceleration issue. Instead they did work on my car without my consent and then tried to over charge me for it. They attempted to rip me off and charge me 500 dollars for Spark Plugs. They charged me 210 dollars in parts when those parts only actually cost a total of 64 dollars. Labor for spark plugs also is not as expensive as they charged me. They also had my car for three days which is ridiculous considering changing spark plugs only takes about an hour (a job I can do myself and would have done myself if they didn't do it without my consent). I definitely would never take my vehicle here again. read more

I took my car to Advanced Auto because it was leaking engine coolant. They gave me an estimate of $1400 to $1500 , and told me that I needed a new thermostat housing. I thought that was high even for a Jaguar. When I came back to pick up my car the bill was $1380. I immediately noticed the price of the part they replaced was $709. I asked about the price and was told that was what they had to pay for the part and that they bought it from a Jaguar dealer. I paid the bill and left. When I got home I began to do some research on the part in question. After searching on line and talking to 2 dealerships and an in person visit to Auto Zone the highest cost was approximately $200. To shorten the story, Advanced has refused to do anything about this problem, and continues to say that is what they paid, and continue to refuse to tell me where they bought the part, after telling me initially they bought the it from a Jaguar dealer. I presented them with a written part quote from a Jaguar dealer in Troy for $119.56. I feel that Advanced is not forthright and honest about their parts pricing and repairs. read more

I just called them and I talked to Steve. I asked for a quote for a speed output speed sensor that the dealer next door recommended. They asked for $85 just for diagnostic services. Either you they do not know the parts/labor or they just want to hook you and make money just for the diagnostic. You ask for a quote to find the best deal! Service is fine but the place is FILTHY. Owner clearly has no respect for customers. The restroom toilet was caked with feces and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. There was no paper in the wall dispenser to wipe your hands. There is a water cooler but no paper cups in the dispenser next to it. The floor was absolutely gross. The magazines in the waiting area were 4 years old! Naturally, no WiFi. The health department would condemn this place. About a year ago, our dealership told me we needed new brakes. I decided to take our vehicle to Advanced Automotive for an oil change, and have them check the brakes while it was there. They told me the brakes still had good life on them, and there was no reason to replace them at that time. I have been going there ever since with all 3 of our vehicles, and have been met with honesty, quality, and professionalism each and every time. They are up front with their estimates, and will prioritize your repairs if you have any that need to be done. I've now had two great experiences here, including one visit that, like Brian S., ended with the Advanced Auto guys diagnosing an issue that they looked up, determined was covered by the manufacturer, and sent me across the street to the dealer's to have fixed for free "instead of paying us a lot of money." They even called Scion up directly and got me a case number first! With that level of service, I couldn't recommend this shop more unless maybe they had free beer and chocolate chip cookies in their waiting area. They work by appointment only, and had me in and out within 30-40 minutes for an oil change and tire rotation. Their bathroom is clean, and the chairs are not rock hard. If you're having something quick done but don't want to wait there, there's a little coffee shop just across the parking lot that works just as well (they'll call you when you're car's ready). read more

So my daughter made an appointment to have her loose fan belt looked at and it was two hours later before they even looked at the car. Okay, COVID has screwed things up, I guess stuff like this happens. But then they charged $135 to tighten the belt (but only $15 for an oil change), and tried to get her to pre-pay $800 for replacement of stabilizer links on a vehicle with 55,000 miles on it. I am grateful that they squeezed her in same day for the noisy / loose belt, but she obviously paid for this privilege, and I can't help but feel that they definitely tried to take advantage of her with the stabi-link push. Not sure what happened to this place, but they don't seem to be "all that" any more. Not recommended. read more

I bought a groupon for an oil change. Made the appointment giving them info about my car. They never mentioned any additional fees. When I got there, I was told there might be a $10-$15 additional fee. Once the oil change was completed and there was nothing I could do about it, I was informed it was $22 additional fee. Excellent service, thorough and honest. I brought my truck here to have the transmission repaired, selected this establishment based on the excellent Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. Jason and James both went the extra mile (my high-mileage "rode hard and put away wet" truck needed some pretty extensive TLC). I received knowledgeable advice throughout the process, paid an amount I thought to be quite reasonable, and got back behind the wheel with minimal downtime. Disclosure - I have never owned a nice car. That means I have a decent amount of experience with having things go wrong with my car and getting things repaired on my car. When I moved to Ann Arbor, I needed a reliable place that would be honest, straightforward, and professional. I got incredibly fortunate that I quickly found advanced automotive to do anything from an oil change and maintenance to minor repairs (like my oil pan cracking from bottoming out my car - maybe my driving has something to do with why I don't have a nice car? Don't judge). Every experience I have had over the past five years with advanced automotive has been a positive one. As a young woman, it is even more intimidating getting your car repaired since it often feels as if you're at a disadvantage walking into your average car repair place. I have never felt intimidated or "dumbed down" at Advanced Automotive (like I would at other places) - I have always felt that I've been treated fairly and kindly by Cameron and Jason and would recommend them to everyone needing car maintenance/repairs in the Ann Arbor area. Went in for an oil change I got on Groupon, which was fine. Staff made me aware that I had some suspension issues and quoted me ~ $1600 for the fix. I got a second opinion with my usual mechanics because I had not experienced any bumpy rides, noises, or issues with the suspension and was suspicious. As suspected my mechanic said the car had some wear on the suspension but was still safe to drive and saw no fluid leaking that I was warned about here. My people also quoted me about ~$900 for the same work. Pretty obvious they were trying to upsell me and take advantage of my lack of car knowledge. Very unfortunate experience, would not reccomend to others. read more

I have lived in the Ann Arbor area for last 4.5 years and this is my go to repair shop. I have a Ford Ranger that has a number of different issues, but they have all been quickly and efficiently fixed by the guys at Advanced Auto. They are incredibly honest and truly will only make you pay for what you have to. The don't try to push you into something you don't want or need. The repair time is always quicker than expect, too. These guys are the reason my 11 year old minivan has 250,000 on it. I keep it lubed and clean, and in those rare times it needs help, Advanced Auto always comes through with professional and reasonable service. Last year, they properly diagnosed a faulty starter switch on the tree. This time, the minivan needed plugs, wires and ignition coil. Two years ago, they were honest enough to diagnose a completely fubar'd engine head on a 2005 Volvo and, rather than fuddle through or outsource it, they recommend I take it to the dealer. I agree with Currents Magazine that this is the Best Auto shop in Ann Arbor. The new owner is carrying on this tradition. He's also a mechanic so not only did he clearly explain the necessary repairs, but showed them to me on my car. I told them that I was preparing for a cross country drive but only had enough cash to do the absolutely necessary repairs. The owner helped me to figure out which repairs were most essential. I liked that I could see into the garage as my car was being worked on. The pricing is fair and definitely cheaper than the dealership. Overall, I liked the independent atmosphere in the shop and I highly recommend Advanced Auto for all of your car servicing needs. read more

Got a used car inspection here, and they said the brakes were in very poor condition and needed to be replaced. Got two other shops' opinions who told us there was absolutely nothing wrong with the brakes. Will not go back as they were either incompetent or dishonest in this matter. read more

I've had a clutch and a brake job done here. I normally do my own repairs, so I'm very picky on the work being done properly. We drive in from out of town to get the work done by a trusted shop. So far I've been happy with their work. Most recently I brought a car back with a brake issue after they had replaced the brakes 20k miles ago. They determined it was a premature part failure, and even though it wasn't under warranty any longer, they went to bat with the parts supplier and covered the repairs 100%. The first time I took my truck to Advanced the guys took a look at it and found that there was actually nothing wrong and told me so. You can't beat that kind of honesty from a mechanic. The second time they replaced my breaks, rotors and did a full synthetic oil change. They have a great warranty program that covers you for the part of your vehicle that they preform a fluid replacement on if you're under 100k miles. The price was fair and scheduling was easy. I just had three jobs done on my truck - transmission swap, exhaust system replacement, front U-joints replaced. I had planned to do some of the work myself, so I had bought many of the parts and priced the rest. I also wrote up a detailed description of the work I wanted done and which parts I had already bought and were in the cab of the truck. I think they did pretty good work, but I have a new check engine light coming on that's probably related to the work they did. More importantly, I had two U-joints in the truck, and said that on the write-up, and they just 'forgot' to use them. But the U-joints I got for $13 each at the parts store changed to $40 each when the shop charged me for them. I'm glad I priced the catalytic converter myself. It was a small part of a decent job, but getting charged triple-the-price, for parts I told them were in the truck, really sours the whole thing. read more

Creative Billing and shoddy work, Had work done, $1400 For Alignment , tie rod ends and bushings & rear brake pads. told car was repaired, took car home notice right wheel bearing noise and park car until money saved to repair.did not drive vehicle. 3 months later Call for appointment to repair front right wheel bearing noise. Instead of repair get a quote for needing alignment and tie rod ends for $1600 this time. Their point check inspection and quote actually points out the work they previously done was shoddy. I tell them I have no confidence in them now and will take vehicle to a reputable service. Told I owe them now $110 for an unapproved inspection. I tell them this is not fair to pay them to admit their previous work was shoddy. Was told if I do not pay ransom they would not give me my car back. I paid the ransom and ask how they did an alignment with bad wheel bearings and tie rod ends. am told they didn't like my tone. I would not count on vehicle being safely repaired by these people. Buyer beware. shoddy work and billing practices. read more

Second visit for oil changes recently. They scheduled me within a few days even though it is Christmas week. They have an excellent groupon. I didn't feel pressured into buying anything beyond the oil change I wanted. They gave me list of things that needed doing and gave me a priority list but didn't even suggest that I get it done there. read more

I've been going to Advanced Automotive for about a year now, for everything from oil changes to warning lights to major repairs. The service is always quick and professional. The mechanics explain each service they recommend, and are consistently cheaper than other places I've patronized in Ann Arbor. This was the only place I've ever gone where an oil change didn't result in a laundry list of "emergency" problems that needed to be addressed immediately. When there has been a problem, they communicated what was necessary, what was going to need to be addressed in the near future, and eventual issues to be aware of. Almost as important to me, they stayed within the quoted budget. I feel very comfortable going to them with any questions or problems, and recommend them without reservation. read more

I made an appointment to have my diesel truck repaired at this shop on Thursday February 12, 2015. I was told they had nothing until Tuesday 2/17/2015, so I made the appointment to drop it off for the day. It was there at 9:00 am, at the end of the day I had to call and ask about it, too busy, didn't get to it they said. Called Wednesday around noon, "oh its at the top of the list". Stopped by this morning at 8:00 am today 2/19/2015 and was encouraged to see it in the shop. After another day of hearing nothing I stopped by, got another "sorry we haven't looked at it". I just took it and will find a reputable shop. I notice any accolades they have been given are from 2010 and later, same with the magazines in the dirty waiting room.
