    Flights! Darks and lights

Celebrating the big 28. The in laws are in town, currently on baby duty. A night out with the husband. Sounds like a perfect night to indulge in some good ole brew. We went to a couple hang out spots in the Park Lane area in Dallas, and there was a wait just about every stop we made that Saturday night. My sister bookmarked Lakewood Growler here on yelp and urged me to check it out. We initially believed this establishment to be closed upon arrival. Very dark and low key. Around 8 pm, there was 1 other couple enjoying each other's company. Behind the counter was a guy and gal taking orders and pouring up glasses. The digital menu provides information about local and out of state beers, the alcohol content, brewsky's color, and how much is currently in stock. If you don't know what you like or what you want, I recommend a flight. You can try 4 different beers at a time, and if you don't like it, you can either suck it up and down it in a couple of gulps or just not drink it at all...you shouldn't feel too bad about wasting it. Just about all the table's were occupied by the time we left (about 845), so just like everywhere in Dallas, the earlier you arrive the better. It's not your typical tavern, I was pleased at the fact that my husband and I could enjoy each other's conversation and actually HEAR OUR OWN VOICES!! Love the beer. Love the prices. Love the ambiance.

Attention, alumni of The Gingerman and Flying Saucer, you are going to LOVE Lakewood Growler. It's the very definition of the perfect neighborhood bar. Before this place opened, I didn't know what a growler was. It's a larger format, 64-oz beer jug. You can buy beer by the glass ($6-8) or by the growler/half-growler (to go). In fact, a surprising number of people seem to stop in to get their beer to go. The selection is very impressive (36 taps!), and focused on Texas craft beer. I love that their website shows you what's on tap at any given time -- and how much of it is left. You can taste before you buy, and the bartenders are happy to make recommendations. It's in the same strip mall as the Albertson's (plentiful free parking). And because they only sell beer and wine (not liquor), they're even open on Sundays. They don't serve food, but you're welcome to bring your own, and Olivella's (pizza), Taco Joint, and Ginger (Thai) are nearby. The place does get loud at about half capacity, but I definitely enjoy the steady playlist of classic rock. All in all, a delightful atmosphere, a cool, casual venue, and beers you might not find on tap anywhere else.

I love the LAKEWOOD GROWLER!! I have always been a fan of the beer selection and staff. This has been my go to spot for almost 2 years. Just a nice place to drink beer and have a low key night. 30+ beers on tap absolutely no liquor and a few wine choices but nothing fancy because this is by far a craft beer bar. Some nights they have special tappings and buy the pint keep the glass nights. But this is definitely a place that has a beer for everyone's liking. Don't know what to pick-- just ask!! Emily and Ross definitely know what's being served up and can give you a good idea of the flavor profile of the beers. There are always NEW beers to enjoy, and if you can't commit to one then do a flight of 5 oz pours. Can't go wrong there. They don't serve food here, but they have popcorn to snack on. The best thing is that there are several places to eat within walking distance, so call in your order or pick it up before arriving and bring it down for a beer. The Growler is not a big place and it is often crowded. In less than two years, I think they have outgrown their space!! I do not want them to move whatsoever, but they do need more seating. The only thing or negative thing I can think of about this place is--- I dislike walking in and see kids and/or babies. That just does not make sense to me or why they are even allowed in this kind of establishment. SMH

Love this place! Friendly staff, cool design and a wonderful selection of Texas craft beers, including my fav - Velvet Hammer from Peticolas. They have a small wine selection too, so bring your girlfriend. Their website lists each of their beers on tap and how much is left in the keg, so you know what's on tap before you go. Great location at Mockingbird and Abrams too.

We got a cheeseboard, but if I had to recommend one thing, definitely the fried mushrooms if you like mushrooms. They're huge and the spicy cilantro sour cream sauce is killer! We sat in the indoor/outdoor area, which was my fave. It can take a minute to flag someone down when it's busy, but that felt understandable for how busy they were. Easy place to settle into and lose track of time a bit--just drinks, conversation, and good food without overthinking it.

The Guinness is poured so perfectly it should be in the Louvre. The bartender, Austin (I'm pretty sure that's his real name and not just what he tells customers), has the patience of a saint and the sarcasm of a man who's been asked "Do you have anything like Guinness but less dark?" one too many times. Highlights: The fish & chips were so good I briefly considered converting to Catholicism just so I could thank God properly. The bathroom graffiti is poetic. "Roses are red, violets are blue, I came for a piss and met half the crew." - actual quote. Then you've got Hannah, who's basically the pub's chaos coordinator. She's got blonde hair that could guide ships in a fog and a laugh that echoes like a banshee having a great time. Don't sleep on Wes - He'll nod once, slide you your drink, and if you're lucky, mutter something profound like "Life's short, drink good stout." Then he disappears to polish glasses like he's auditioning for a monastery. Absolute mystery man, 10/10 enigma. And rounding out the crew is Paige, the wildcard. She's got stories that start with "Back in then..." and end with police chases, lost sheep, and at least one exploding still. She'll flirt with your grandma, roast your ex in three sentences or less. There is also this Asian guy that looks like a confused troll with blonde hair. He lives up to the saying once you go Asian it's amasian. Can't forget the blonde girl that's going through the Dallas legacy transition of bottle service to real estate. Shes as good at serving as she is selling real estate. These people run the bar like a well-oiled dysfunctional family. They banter with each other louder than the jukebox, remember birthdays you forgot you told them, and have an unspoken code: if you're having a rough night, they'll slide you a free shot and pretend it was a mistake. If you're being a gobshite, they'll roast you into next week without missing a pour.

It was a few days before Thanksgiving, there was a decent crowd in the bar and everyone including the bartender (who's name I now cant remember because I took so long to write this) were all very friendly and helpful. The bar was warm, cozy and decked out in Christmas decor (and cute bathroom wallpaper). Good beer selection, great food (I literally ate the tikka masala twice during our couple day trip) and they were conveniently open on Thanksgiving after the game and a fun shot wheel, which was both fun to partake in and fun to watch others do. We will definitely be back if we find ourselves back in Dallas.

My friend recommended this on his list of Irish Pubs around here, so I decided to give it a try. For a strip mall Irish Pub, it does take you into another world. Cool entrance that opens up to a horseshoe bar with tons of tables and booths. It was Trivia night, so they only had the Stanley Cup playoff on one TV. Sat down at the bar and ordered my Guinness and reviewed the menu. After we paid our bill with a credit card, I noticed that we were charged a 3% credit card fee. Nowhere on the menu was it mentioned there would be a credit card fee, nor was it articulated by a bartender. That sort of fee makes me wonder what's going on in this establishment.
