I spoke to a Manager on the phone bc I wanted to order Caldo de Res but it's not on the menu, there is Caldo de Pollo for $16.95 on the menu but Lalo's Manager wants to charge me $19.95 just to substitute the meats and that's not right, they are attempting to price gauge me bad enough the prices in restaurants are high to begin with. People be careful Lalo's are seriously gauging it's not fair to everyone. It has been a few years since we were last at Lalo's and just happened to be in the neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon so stopped in for lunch. Restaurant was pretty busy but we were seated promptly but that's about it. I have to say overall, Lalo's was just OK; chicken fajitas were served quickly and hot but had no flavor at all. One of the worst waiting times here and parking lot is trash. First of all, please update your facility, make it bigger or relocate. You receive tons of business and I am pretty sure your facility right now is over capacity, which can violate all sorts of fire codes. The parking lot needs to be bigger, your customers are getting towed, ticketed, and turned away because of this issue. Change must happen it's been like this for more than ten years now. They have a huge sign stating margaritas are the best...it was sour :-( Food was not good. Rice...beans....Bland!...guac was awful. My husband's burrito hard a hair in it. The place is beautifully decorated and vibrant. Staff: fantastic. Food? Awful. I asked to taste the mole sauce, it tasted acidic, so I went with garlic shrimp instead. The garlic was SUPER CHUNKY and RAW. My dish was near inedible. They don't have good recipes here and it's far from authentic. Calling a deep fried tortilla with cheese an empanada? Just a bizarre experience. I'm seeing similar reviews on the experience with management personnel, so I'm thinking they need to make some serious changes there, as they are a bit nuts, IMO. We stopped here after a family day at the zoo with some old friends, which we do a few times a year. Everyone was in a great mood, we got seated, got the kids situated, we ordered a round of drinks. All is great. The waiter came back around to take our order and we load up. We decided to toss in a shrimp cocktail, despite it's hefty price of ~19.00, because it looked so good on the menu, with good-sized prawns jutting out of a mug of some kind. We figured we could share around. Screw the price. Well, this thing showed up with very small shrimp swimming in juice. Everyone sampled and basically agreed it sucked, which it did. When the waiter came back I asked for a menu and pointed out the discrepancy between the photo and what they actually served and asked to have it taken away, which he did. No problem so far. A few minutes later a woman shows up to let us know that they would remove the thing from our bill. Still no problem, but then she launches into a discussion of how many shrimp came in it (16) and how many they found when they apparently deconstructed it in the kitchen (9) and that the manager is angry about that. Of course, now I'm pissed, sitting at a table with a bill of a couple hundred bucks stacking up and being accused of this shyster move over a few lousy shrimp, as if my sole mission in coming to Lalo's was to scam a couple of shrimp. Absurd. Fact is I literally cannot remember the last time I sent something back in a restaurant. I used to wait tables, am a very good customer and a great tipper. I'm not a complainer, and I'm sure as hell not some two-bit scammer. I complained because it was lousy and not even close to what was shown on the menu. Period. I point out that there are 5 of us sitting there and that we'd passed it around and that that, in conjunction with the fact you can get 2-3 on the serving spoon, accounted for the fact that there were than 1 or 2 of these mini shrimp missing from their extremely shoddy shrimp cocktail. She responds that well the manager is not happy, and 'in the future', at which point I cut her off as at that point I know that there is no 'future' in terms of our coming back here. I tell her that, if the manager wants to talk about this theft of popcorn shrimp in person he can come on over, that we'll hold a chair for him. She continues to talk, arguing again, and I simply continue to tell her to bring out the manager if he'd like to discuss this, as I'm just done with this stupidity, and tell her that if they want to charge us to charge us, and if not then not. She leaves and we go back to our meal. A few minutes later manager man shows up and I let him know that I was not a shrimp thief. He is not happy, but seemingly not arguing the point. We seem to be done. Now someone else at our table jumps in to say everything else was fine, service, food (not true, my tampiquena ordered MR came out medium well) and she's just trying to smooth things over, speaking to him in spanish. Then, he launches again into the great shrimp count caper nonsense. Son of a @&#$^. I'm assuming he didn't realize I also spoke Spanish, but I do, so I understand every word he's speaking right over the top of me. I again, in spanish now, tell him I'm not a shrimp thief, and if he wants to charge us to charge us, but this is ridiculous at this point and either way we're not here to argue about these stupid shrimp, which have now taken over our meal. These people are just nuts and need some serious help in customer relations skills. It's too bad, really, as they are screwing up the Lalo's reputation with their thick headed, paranoid, argumentative nonsense. Those might be great skills in other professions, such as homicide detective or maybe a bookie's money collector, but they don't mesh well with running the front end of a restaurant. I wouldn't go back for any reason, except maybe great food, which this was not either. The chicken soup I had was bland and my main dish of tampiquena came out overdone. At that point I didn't care and just ate the damn thing, as I didn't want any more nonsense from Crazy and Co. Here's an idea: Don't misrepresent what you're selling- and when someone justifiably complains when you bring out garbage that looks nothing like how it appears on the menu accept it and just wait for the next fool if you don't want to serve a quality product. These lame-brained idiots turned an absolutely great day into a PITA and lost us as Lalo's customers permanently over a half dozen tiny shrimp. That's bad management, bad business and just a total lack of any kind of common sense. For all of that they get the largest raspberry possible. Never Again. read more

Consistency is key for me with mexican food. I have now have ate their food here for 4 meals. And all 4 i have to rate a 10 out of 10. I had the taco dinner one night. Burriotto dinner the 2nd night. Lalo's. The default dining option when a group of people can't decide on where to go. Let's face it, Lalo's isn't the best with food. The menu is big with lots of pictures, but not many options, and like a certain chain in Lakeview *cough*Cesears*cough*, Lalo's is also a chain that caters to a young crowd that comes to drink big slushy margaritas and have fun. However, Lalo's has fewer Chads and Trixies. This location gets packed on the weekends because of salsa dancing in the evenings, which is a big plus. It also has a several cool dining areas, including a "patio" style room. Lalo's also has the capacity for several large groups to be seated in the same area at the same time, and it's helpful to call ahead when you have a group. Unlike others here, I have always had friendly service at this Lalo's. IMO, apart from River North, this location is the best of all of them. Parking can get tight on weekends, but the Metra is nearby. read more

Wow, this place sure is bustling! Came here with a group of friends over the weekend and enjoyed a ginourmous margarita, food and good conversations. The food was decent. Typical Mexican fare. I had their chile rellanos served with salad and spanish rice. Most of my friends had their tacos and said that they were pretty good too. I liked our server she was nice and prompt with both our drinks and food. Parking was difficult and the establishment itself is huge! I got lost trying to locate the bathroom. As i got older, Lalo's was the place for us TO GO for margaritas (underage or otherwise), and for good solid mexican food. P.S. there is an urban myth that Lalo's margaritas are so good because they put raw eggs in the margarita mix. this is unfounded, though i have tried my best to find out the truth. so far as i know ... Not true. we always enjoyed that they had a course of chips and salsa AND vinaigrette vegetables before the main course. mm good. I know that its not supposed to be authentic mexican food, but who cares..its good. I used to eat at Lalo's atleast once a month and Id almost always get the steak fajitas, and I loved them every time. Id usually order for take out but every once in a while id eat there. The interior is that of a typical mexican resteraunt, except you can tell that they are a little cleaner, and a little more on the commercial side. On certain nights though its like a club..which can personally be annoying to me..no offense but I cant stand the mexican polka music, and they play it really loud. read more

I couldn't decide between 2 stars or 3, but since my picky husband cleaned his plate, I'm giving Lalo's 3 stars. The parking lot is tiny and the restaurant stands at a corner of two large streets, so good luck with street parking. Our server was nice, yet pretty much absent throughout our entire meal. My mole chicken was bland. It was boiled chicken covered in mole sauce. That's it! Toward the end of our meal I wanted a glass of milk to lessen the fire in my mouth and we had to ask a busboy for it because our server was no where to be found. The food was very very average. Absolutely nothing stood out about our meal, except for the chicken (in a bad way) and the absence of our server. There are plenty of Mexican restaurants in Berwyn. Now I'm no Mexican food connoisseur, but, I truly love and enjoy a night at this Lalo's. I've also been to the Lalo's on State downtown, but this Lalo's has always topped my downtown experience. The food is delicious and brought to the table in no time at all. I've had their margarita's and their Mexican sunset. The sunset beat the margarita, but both were good. I love their bar area as well, they usually have a band playing on the weekend and its always a good time. The interiors are your pretty typical mexican restaurant style, paintings on the wall, but what I love about this place is the attention to detail, lots of glazed ceramic tile, plants, the colors are all warm. read more
