Mr. Lam saved me THOUSANDS of dollars. I looked this place up on yelp, gave me the cheapest quote for a pre-purchase inspection. I was even an hour late for my appointment, he was very busy, but he still fit me in! I was purchasing a Certified-Pre-Owned Toyota and learned it's better safe than sorry to get a second opinion. Best advice of my life. Even with a clean Carfax? Even as a CPO? HECK-TO-THE-YES EVEN IF THE CARFAX IS CLEAN AND CPO. Turns out this "certified" Toyota had lots of repair work all over (meaning it was in multiple accidents). Everything had new paint, new bumpers, even a new door. A WHOLE NEW DOOR! This means it was in a bad enough accident to have replace bumpers, a door, and to paint the whole gosh darn thing. Can you picture how bad that accident was? That's a salvage. Also, Lam saw the frame was damaged and it appeared the dealer tried to hide it by sanding it because supposedly that's a big no-no. But it's all fixed, right? NO NO NO NO NO! This damage means it's worth half the cost, should not have passed as a CPO and is technically salvage status. Any dealer would have paid half to a quarter of this advertised price. I took it took it to Lam, where I normally go, and he did the exact same work for $300! From there one I only take my car here. read more

Very honest. I went in for brakes and a tune up. They did a bang up job on the brakes for a very fair price. Before they did my tune up the tested my compression. Turns out my #1 cylinder has lost compression and the tune up will not fix my issue. Instead of just doing the tune up and charging me they stopped right there and called me, saving me a fair amount of money. I will be going back soon to have them fix the engine. read more

I will never go to another shop ever again. This place is awesome. I was quoted $250 for my brakes on my Civic at one shop, called Lam and was quoted $90. I recently went back for an oil change and was in and out. I brought my own oil and filter. I left them with 5 quarts but I guess my car only needed 4 because when I got back into my car there was 1 quart in my passenger seat. They could have easily just kept the 5th quart and I never would have known. If your in Long Beach and you need something done to your car go to Lam! You wont regret it. read more

This is a great shop. They do very high level work and charge affordable prices. I was an ASE mechanic about 25 years ago and still do most of my own work. Recently I had some work to do that I didn't have the tools to do and based on my yelp reading I visited this shop. I found my mechanic!! They are honest, and have reasonable prices. Let me first say, I tend not to trust mechanics because of previous experience. I have a bmw, and took my car to a Good Year in LB for an oil change. They recommended I replacing the tie rods, rack and pinion with an alignment estimated cost $900. I passed on the repairs and later that week took my car to have my wheels replaced and tires rotated at Performance Tires. I asked the service rep to check the suspension. I was told that just the tie rods needed to be replaced and would take several hours to repair and cost half the price with the alignment. I then asked why the other mechanic quoted me for repairs that I did not need. He said it's because the parts are in the same area and they can make more money off me. I took my wife's Toyota Sequoia for an oil change, car wash and detailing work and was told the transmission was leaking fluid and need to replace a seal. I decided to get a second opinion. After receiving high rating, I decided to give Lam Auto Repair a chance. All I can say is Thank you yelpers. I asked Mr. Lam to do a maintenance inspection. He replaced a seal on the transmission, replaced the spark plugs and a cracked serpentine belt, cleaned the AC filter, and checked fluid levels. He recommended only using dealer parts because they last longer. Parts and Labor came out to $450. He was honest and told me what need to be done and what was minor that I could put off for later. No B.S. I asked Mr. Lam if he service BMW and how much would it cost to get the front and back brakes done. I've called a dozen auto repair shops specializing in BMW from Long Beach to Orange County and was quoted from $700-1,300, but they could not give me a straight answer, why the big price range. All I got was that they don't bother resurfacing the rotors to that's how much they cost. Mr. Lam gave me a quote for fraction of the price. What got me sold in putting my trust in Lam Auto Repair, was that I overheard a customer ask for an oil change. Mr. Lam told him it would cost $30 to replace the oil, but if he brought in his own oil that Mr. Lam would only charge him $10 for labor. I've never heard any mechanic offer that. These guys are a joke. I took in my car a few months ago cos it was running like crap. After reading some yelp reviews I decided to give them a try besides their location was close to my residence. After two hours I received a call and I was told that my engine was cracked and there was water in the oil. I was surprised about it because before I took the car in I check the oil and there was no water. Long story short, I was quoted $1500 on top of that when I asked about the engine, they simply answered from the junkyard. Dissatisfied with the diagnosis and their solution I took my car elsewhere. The problem, a bad spark plug which burnt out a cable. Total cost $383, new spark plugs, new set of cables, an oil change and other items. update, i took my car to herb and reds on 7th but you need to make an appt first, eh. read more

In a world of often shoddy, untrustworthy mechanics, Lam Auto is the best Auto Repair Shop I've ever been to. Lam is kind, thorough, explanatory, honest, fast, and good at what he does. If something doesn't need to be done, he'll tell you and save you a grip of cash. Whatever someone else would charge, he has almost always charged at least a fourth less. When you can't get your car in during the week, he's open on Saturday. This is the only shop I don't cringe over, when thinking about having to bring my car into the mechanic. I went to the dealership and they told me that I needed a new Oil Cooler and Muffler. They said that it would cost around $1500 for both. Luckily I found Lam's Auto Repair on-line. I decided to call this shop because of the great ratings that I saw here on yelp. And I was right. Lam fixed my car within a couple of hours for only $120.00 (parts not included) and he referred me to Advance Muffler shop where they welded my muffler in 20 minutes for $25! I came to Lam's because of the solid reviews he was receiving, and I was not disappointed. I had my ac compressor changed along with the receiver. The AC system is running smooth and cold now. So I decided to have my front and rear shocks replaced soon after as I was pleased with the work, along with a gear oil change of the rear differential. Lam's shop is honest and fair when it comes to prices. I love the the fact that they allow you to bring your own parts. I would highly recommend them and that's hard for me to say as I am rather skeptical of most mechanics. read more

Lam is a fantastic person and mechanic. I have a 10 year old Volvo that's never had it's timing belt replace. I got several quotes in Long Beach and Orange County. The average price for a replacement with a new water pump was $775. Lam gave me a quote that I didn't even believe at first. I dropped my car off and he popped the hood and showed me everything he needed to do. He was very informative. He also suggested I replace the fan belt because it was the original as well. He gave me an out the door price of $360! This was all the parts and labor. Tax included. He finished the job hours before schedule and fixed a bulb that was out for free. I definitely suggest checking him out for minor and major repairs before over paying elsewhere. It's tough to find good, honest mechanics these days. I read reviews here and decided to take my 97 Ford Explorer in. I thought it was a head gasket but in less than 5 minutes they determined it to be the water pump. The owner quoted me a price and had the truck back later that afternoon. They even showed me the old parts. The truck did need additional work done (they called me to let me know) which I was okay with. I'd recommend Lam Auto Repair. Friendly, knowledgeable, fast and not overly pricey. read more

Took my van there; It was overheating, three weeks later when I called they said it was ready. How happy I was to get it back. First red flag "sir you have a check engine light on". I thought they should have told me before? I would have had that fixed. Before I could say anything he said take it to a smog place around the corner to have it fixed, O K if you say so. Off I go; two blocks away engine starts overheating. This can't be!!! called them back and was told they did not check for overheating at high speeds 35 mph was to fast. Hooked my battery up backwards in my Honda Civic and usually I spend big bucks on the thing because I just like the car. Mr. Lam could have easily ripped me simple and I would have gone along with it. Imagine my surprise when he was TOTALLY HONEST replaced a fuse charged a more than reasonable price did a few more little things I needed no charge and off I go happy as heck. The car runs better than it ever did somehow. Lam and his crew know what they're doing and go the extra mile to save money on repairs. I have an old '95 Honda Accord that I took to two different shops and they couldn't figure out why it ran so badly. The car would not start sometimes, it overheated in hot weather, and it ran so rough I thought I might not make it to the shop. Turned out to be a blown head gasket. They sent the head to a machine shop and they said my rocker arms and valve rotor was bad. Lam sent one of his mechanics to Pick-A-Part to get new rocker arms and valves that the dealer quoted $500 for. Paid one of his guys $50 to take the parts off to send to the machine shop. I got the car back and after having the headwork done and gasket replaced it runs like a champ. They probably saved me $500 or more with all the other work they did and the Pick-A-Part run. I will continue to bring my car in for all my future work. read more

I just recently moved to the Long Beach area from NC. Being that the military moves me alot I tend to look for three things in the new areas which are a good hair stylist, good restaurant/shopping area and a good mechanic. My experience with car maintenance as a female is...I took "powder-puff mechanics" with the military and know the basics of a car so can reasonably know when someone is getting over on me. I was sad to leave my last mechanic in NC because he was truly honest and reasonable. So, I began my search for a Long Beach mechanic for my 2007 Chev Tahoe (I know better than to take it to a Chev dealer due to their labor fees), which I drove from NC to CA. By the end of the trip my front and rear brakes were sqeaking at every stop and I had to find a mechanic quickly. I searched yelp for several mechanics and found the many positive responses for Lam Auto Repair which reminded me of the honesty and integrity of my NC mechanic. I then decided to take my vehicle here and met a very polite and pleasant man, Mr. Lam, who wasted no time to take a look at my brakes and confirm what I needed. At this time he quoted me $200. The next day I went to a auto parts store and purchased the brakes (leaving them on the front seat) and brought my vehicle to Mr. Lam who had advised "first come first serve". I didn't arrive until 10 am and there were several other vehicles in the parking lot and I then thought that this was going to take all day. Well, as soon as I got there, Mr. Lam took my information and keys and told me that it would take 2 hours. In less than 2 hours Mr. Lam calls me and tells me that my vehicle is ready. When I get there to pay for his services, he then tells me that my overall charges were $120 (not the $200 initially quoted)!!!!! Mr. Lam advised me that he used the new brakes that I had purchased and adjusted the rate to labor fees. Now, you and I both know, that as a women, by myself, and would have taken my vehicle to a Chev dealer (or any where else), they would have charged me the initial rate that was quoted and might have added other labor charges. Mr. Lam not only provided service in a timely manner, has competive prices, but is also an honest mechanic. In addition, from speaking with him prior to leaving, he truly believes in customer service and knows what it takes to keep people coming back. All of the positive reviews that I read I truly believe are true especially from my own experience. I left there feeling good, saved money, and I am happy that I have found another reputable mechanic that I can trust with my vehicle. He truly has my future business and I highly recommend him especially to females that dont know much about vehicle maintenance. read more

Man, Lam is the man. And so are his mechanics. My little 95' Dodge Neon got the dreaded Check Engine light on Saturday night after work. After I got off the freeway and came to a stop light, the car died on me. After pushing it to the side of the road and waiting on the tow truck, I searched Google and Yelp for a good auto shop to get it towed to. I found Lam's Auto Repair and it had close to 5 stars already. Whoa! That's as close to a sure bet as you can get on Yelp. I got it towed that night to in front of Lam's. There's a few spots in front where it's safe from tickets to park on weekends. During the week, it's only 2 hour parking 9-7. But you should be able to just move it into Lam's property since he will be open during that time frame. I left a note on their mailbox to let them know my car was the one in front of their shop and I'd be in first thing in the morning to talk to them. I called in the morning and Lam picked up and told me to come right in. I took the train there and when I got there gave Lam the keys and signed in and he said he'd get right to looking at it and he'd give me a call once he figured it out. 4-5 hours later, he called and let me know it was the timing belt and pulley that broke. To replace it along with the other necessary parts and labor, it would cost me $350. Not bad at all. I was just happy it didn't ruin another part of my engine. Jinxed myself. Got a call later that day from Lam and he started of with the summary of his fist diagnose, and eased me into the bad news: when the timing belt pulley broke, it bent the valves in my engine just enough to where it wasn't getting compression in a few cylinders. He would have to to a half job, meaning the top half of the engine. Well crap. This was going to end up costing me close to $2000. Then Lam comes to save the day. He quotes me at $900 for the half job, and still $350 for the timing belt replacement, so $1250 to get my car back on the road, good as new. What a deal. The hassle of rebuilding an engine is no fun process. I told Lam to go ahead, and during the whole 5 day process, Lam let me know what was going on. He never left me out of the loop and never tried to up-sell me to replace anything I didn't need at that moment. On Friday afternoon, my car was ready to go. I went down to the shop and he showed me the broken pulley system and bent valves. He also showed me the new casket and timing belt system in my car. I payed the man and I drove out the gate, as Lam was giving me the thumbs up. No Lam, thumbs up to you. Two thumbs up. read more

My check engine light came on, without obvious reason. After reading Yelp reviews about Lam Auto Repair, I drove over there hoping they'd still be open late on a Saturday. Joe (Lam's brother) and a couple other mechanics checked the code and advised me it was simply an emission error - and nothing to worry about until my next Smog check. They offered to turn off the light for me and it hasn't come back on. My Civic's running fine and I will DEFINITELY take my business to Lam if/when it next acts up. Lam auto is competent, affordable, and honest. I do all my own automotive repair and maintenance unless I don't have the tools and they're too expensive to buy for my purposes. My differential was dying and I don't have the press for the work which would cost thousands of dollars to buy for this one job. In my search I found Lam and the questions he was asking showed me that he knew what he was talking about which was refreshing. His price was well below what others quoted. I hired him to do the work and the results were wonderful, I've put another 40,000 miles on that differential with zero problems. I hate oil on the garage floor. For $700.00 we got a nice job done on an oil leak on our 2010 Ford Escape. All the work was explained to me very thoroughly as to what they needed to do to make the engine nice and tight. They had to replace my head gaskets and timing chain gaskets. By the way the estimate was for $700.00 I paid for not a penny more. They beat the estimated time it would take to fix the car and boy did my engine bay look good after the job! All the parts looked freshly cleaned and the plastic parts looked armoraled. It looked cleaner than the inside of the car. I could not be happier with the work, really. New cars are expensive and I think we put it off for at least a couple of years. read more
