I thought I had a major electrical problem, but instead was missing a bolt and rod to keep my battery in place. True, if I investigated the problem myself I could have solved it. Checked a few other places before going but couldn't find anyone else with these great prices and great reviews. When I pulled into Lams I was greeted by Lam himself. I to.d him exactly what needed to be done. He looked at m car and told me that some of the stuff I said I needed was unnecessary but when he got more into it he would let me know if it needed done. He could of scammed me right there and just replaced what I though needed done but no he looked at it and told me that it wasn't needed. Just for that reason I will be back. Well let's just say I got out of there paying almost $400 less then quoted at other auto shops. Couldn't believe it. Lam is a great guy and really doesn't want to rip off his customers. My car was in urgent need of a new battery so I headed to Lam's Auto Repair. It was 9:30am on a weekday and the shop was already crowded. Luckily, the shop has quite a number of staff so my car was able to get a new battery in less than 30 minutes. With labor and parts, my total came out to only $120. The service is excellent (quick and professional), the costs are reasonable, and they seem very trustworthy. Since I was so satisfied with the service, I also asked for the cost of an oil change. My brakes were "screeching" for some TLC in the last week or so, and I finally decided to get off my bum and actually do something about it. Most of the shops I researched in the Long Beach area wanted $89.99+ per axle (I was only looking to fix the front axle) and they wouldn't give me a price over the phone. I came on yelp (Thanks to all the positive reviews) and found Lam Auto Repair...and couldn't be more happier with my choice. I didn't get anyone's names as I am very ADD like that. I simply pulled into the driveway, got out and a very nice older gentlemen came over and helped me. I cut to the chase and said "My car screeches whenever I hit the brakes and come to a stop. How much to get the front axle brakes serviced?" He said to give him 10 minutes and he would tell me. So, another younger gentlemen lifted my car...got under, and came back and said "You actually have a few more weeks left on your brake pads, if you want to come back then...I can give you the brake special (replacing the pads, and turning the rotors?!?) for $110 flat. I asked him to just go ahead and do them now. He said it would take about an hour. Me and my kid walked across the street, and had dinner at wing stop. We came back an hour later and my car wasn't yet ready, so they asked me if I wanted to watch TV in the waiting room for another 15 minutes. We took them up on the offer, and 15 minutes later I was called into the garage to fill out some paperwork and pay. They did a great job, and the whole time I was driving home I would randomly press on the brakes to see if the screeching was really gone, lol...and it was :) read more

Lam is awesome, honest and does great work. For while, I went to a different mechanic because they were only 3 blocks from my house. Big mistake as that mechanic was dishonest and could not fix the leaks in my Subaru Outback 1997 as he promised. Took the car to Lam and he told me: "It's an old car, my recommendation is just add oil when needed and drive it until it dies. Not worth it to put too much money into a 1997." I appreciate Lam's honesty, unlike the other mechanic. Glad I returned, even if it's a bit further from my house. I had just moved to SoCal when I needed new shocks for my car. Not knowing about what was out there, I found out about Lam through Yelp. His high rating had me confident that I made a good choice. Due to having recently moved here from New York, the rust involved with changing the shocks on my 2005 Equinox made things a little more difficult than planned. This place is very honest and best of all cheap. Although it's in a bit of a rough spot and filled with cars, it's worth the hassle. I went in knowing I needed my oil changed and timing belt fixed. The belt alone was easily a $100 fix at other places. I dropped my car off at 8 am and got a call at 10:30ish from Lam saying I needed a timing belt, oil change and air filter replacement. I bought a car off of Craigslist and after a about a year started to hear some noises and have some problems with it. I live very, very close to Lam Auto repair, so I brought my car to him first. I initially had this horrible vibrating sound through the whole car, I had to bring it in at least three times to be fixed. Because each time I would pick it up, they would show me some thing they fixed and tell me the noise was gone. And each time within less then 24 hours the noise would be back. It was only after the third time did he seem to figure out what it was and I haven't heard the noise since. He was very kind and didn't over charge me but it was frustrating that they kept telling me it was fixed and it wasn't. Then I started having squeaking suspension noises coming from the back of my car. Again, I would bring it in and they would have it for a few hours. They would call me same day and say they fixed it, and I would pick it up and less then 24 hours would go by and the noise would be back. So I would bring it back ASAP. We did this at least 4 times before one morning one of his workers finally told me, there's nothing wrong with the car, we don't hear noise, you must have stuff in your trunk making noise. Basically looking at me and talking to me like I was crazy. I can hear a noise! I'm not crazy! I'm not gonna bring it in if I don't think something is wrong! It was just incredibly rude and I was shocked that they would just brush me off like that. Like I was bothering them. So I took my car to a shop literally down the street and had the best experience with a mechanic I've ever had. Fixed the noise and then some and the car drives like new! He even told me that Lam uses cheap parts from China and does shoddy work often. Avoid this place if you can especially because there is better auto shops even on the same street. read more

This is the BEST place to get your car repaired!! They are very affordable, honest, friendly, and they do fantastic work. Each time I've gone, Lam's Auto charged me a fraction of what other places quoted me, fixed it in record time, and the systems have worked perfectly ever since. I've brought my car in for a clutch replacement, an AC recharge, and a AC compressor/condenser fix. When they had to do something other than what was in the original quote, they made sure to explain what was needed and why. They also showed me pictures of what my car had, and compared to what the part should look like. I never felt like they were trying to take advantage or squeeze more money out of me for something that didn't actually need to be done. I would HIGHLY recommend Lams Auto. Mr. Lam is so adorable! Seriously, I heart him. Once the warranty ran out on my Lexus, I wasn't really feeling the $160 oil change or the $500 brake pad replacement from the dealership. Lam hooks it up using top of the line parts for way under dealership prices. My brakes have been making noises recently, so I needed to look for a good mechanic in Long Beach. I've heard about how mechanics could take advantage of young girls who they assume don't know anything. SO, I looked up A TON of information on mechanics and cars so at least I could act like I knew something lol. I called in and made an appointment for later that day, that saved me a lot of time so I didn't have to wait for other customers. The workers were really friendly! The person who worked on my car was really good. I asked questions about what he was doing and how much it would cost, so he told me everything about my car, why it was making the sounds, what he was doing. The pad for my rear brakes were completely gone, but the front ones were only 50% gone. He recommended just getting the back ones replaced for now, and to come back in 3-4 months for the front ones. The whole process took around 2 hours? It went pretty quick since he took my car in right away. He was kind of vague about the price, but it only came out to $110 to change both of the rear brakes!! Idk if that's TOO cheap LOL, online it says it should come out to $100-$200. Not complaining though! I didn't get any paperwork once he finished, which was kind of strange. So idk if there's a warranty if anything happens. Overall it went really well. Would definitely recommend coming here, he was honest and worked really quick! read more

Lam is awesome! Let me be clear though, this is a no frills place...I repeat.....no frills. Did I mention that it's no frills?! The 'waiting room' is bare bones, and if you choose to sit outside and wait, you'd better be ok sitting on old scuffed up patio furniture. Lastly, it's cash only but the good thing is, Lam will do an inspection, for free, and let know what it's going to run so there are no surprises. That said......the service is top notch. It's quick, it's very affordable, and the service techs are quite pleasant. What I like most is that you are shown how and why at every step of the repair phase. Not that I would have known the difference anyway, but there's something comforting about being given a mini-education on the the specifics on your car. And....they're open on Saturday's. Lam kicks butt. Like others say, it's not fancy. It's not in the best neighborhood. But they seem to do good work, they're friendly and have good prices. I took my '09 Mazdaspeed3 there as the dealer wanted close to $450 to put in new front and rear brake pads. I'd do it myself but I've gotten too lazy. I bought the new pads online for about half what the dealer wanted and Lam charged $120 labor. Total after my pad purchase was a hair under $300. I'll take it. read more

Gave them a call and they said, bring it in. As soon as I arrived they pulled my Tahoe in. Within minutes they assessed that I needed both front and back brakes replaced. I said, what's it going to cost? The quote was $250 for both out the door. The price was reasonable so I said, "ok, how long?". The quoted time was 2.5 hours. I said ok. I decided to wait and it was actually done an hour early. The transaction was fast plus they checked my check engine light and repaired what was causing it. I'll definitely be back. read more

After I when to Honda dealership for a 90k mile tune up they wanted to replace the distributor/ and heater bypass hose which will cost $621($325 parts/$295 labor). I was very suspicious of them since they lie to me before so I decided to go to another mechanic. I went to Mr. Lam shop after I read all of the positive reviews. However, I made a rookie mistake and told Mr. Lam that the dealership wanted me to change the distributor/ and heater bypass hose. I also made another mistake by stand by and while they inspected the car and just went to the waiting room. After 15 min Mr. Lam told me distributor was leaking everywhere and he charged $50 to clean it all up. He said he will only charge me $270 for the distributor since there was no damage to heater bypass hose. I was so happy since it was substantially lesser than the dealer requested. I accepted and the whole entire procedure took about 15 minute. When everything was done I asked for the old part back and they said no but after several minutes arguing I got my part back. Looking at my old distributor and I notice there were no oil leaking internally the distributor was pretty much perfect condition from the inside. I look up the new distributor that Mr. Lam sell to me and I found that it is from a Chinese company called World Power System and the price listed on rockauto was $130. I was very suspicious and not happy so I decided to not come back. A year later I went to a new mechanic to check on my timing belt. I told this story to the mechanic and even brought my distributor to show him. He told me I was cheated. The whole entire thing (if it was actually leaking) could be fixed by changing the O-ring which cost $2-$5. Mr. Lam took advantage of my naive and scammed me $320. Please beware of this SOB and all of the positive reviews. He did offered me a $30 discount to give him a positive review. read more

This is an update on Lam. Perhaps its his Yelp rating, I don't know, but I no longer can support Lam. I have always taken his slightly rude behavior with a grain of salt, especially if he offered fair prices and reasonable work. This is no longer the case. Same slightly rude behavior, but prices are going up up. For a basic service his price has gone up 80% in the past few years. Horrible horrible customer service I will never be back. I had dropped my car off early on a Saturday morning by 8am for an oil change, tune up, tire rotation, and the 80k engine check. Came back by 5pm to pick it up since they close at 6pm and he forgot to work on my car! He hadn't figured it out until after he had charged me and handed me the wrong set of car keys, and told him those weren't my car keys. I pointed to my car parked in the lot and i could see the lightbulb go off above his head and told me he forgot to work on my car!! So essentially my car sat there alllllll day and I was left without my car all day. What a waste of my time. Horrible 1st time experience and never going again. I took my 2000 Isuzu in, they drove it and told me I needed a transmission. Said it was best if I found a 2nd hand or rebuilt transmission (costing between $700-$1200) and they would install it for $300. I got a 2nd opinion and guess what? Replaced a spark plug and it runs perfect!!! read more

Brilliant customer service! Took my GF's car to the local Firestone in LBC. They use to be my go-to place, so when they said she needed her belts changed I didn't think anything of it and didn't double check everything. I went to Lam's because their quote was less than half of the one I recovered from Firestone. I spoke with Lam and we looked at the belts together and much to my surprise they had more than 60% left on their use. He told us to come back in 5-6 months and he'd be glad to exchange them. I have been to Mr. Lam's shop about 4 times. Today, I got my struts replace, sway bar bushing replaced, motor mounts replaced. My car drives like it was new. Mr. Lam simply asked me to write what I wanted done on a paper form. I leave the car with him. He called me in the afternoon and we discuss cost and his recommendations. He doesn't not give a fancy receipt. I gradually developed my sense of trust in him. I recommend him for good prices, quality work, and good turn around time. He's a good man. read more

This is an update to my other review. I bring my car to Lam and his crew now. I refuse to go to Pep Boys or Firestone Auto for any work on my poor little jetta. You will save lots and lots of money if you come here. I brought my car in last month because my car was leaking coolant. It turned out that my radiator cracked. I thought oh great now I have to go buy it and come back. Nope. He took care of me. The best mechanic in long beach. I feel confident bringing my car here. When I get another car, he is my mechanic for that car. Oh and do not mind the man smoking a cigarette while working cars. Shoot, at least he gets isht done. read more

I've been to Lam's several times now. I went because of all the great Yelp reviews. I had a bad experience each time. I kept going back thinking I must be wrong because Yelp reviews are so good, but I think that's the problem. they are just too busy. lt certainly is inexpensive. I also get the sense that Lam is honest, but it's just not worth it. they can't fix anything that is more than mildly complicated. their work is simply not good quality. they don't fix everything you ask them to. I really wanted to like the shop. I tried over and over and was disappointed each time. if you want your car fixed right the first time you should go elsewhere. you get what you pay for. if you search lots of Yelp reviews you'll see others that have similar experiences and advice. read more

Very friendly service! At first I called to see how much an oil change was going to be and they quoted me $25. Took them only 15 minutes to change my oil and they only charged me $20! I'm happy since it took only 15 minutes and service was friendly. I've been to other places where they acted like they were too good to change my oil. Although I was sitting on the side where this door wasn't closed and was creaking due to wind (which was super annoying) , it's all good in the neighborhood! read more

We are so thankful to have read Yelp and found this place. We bought a 2006 Pontiac that has turned out to be a bit of a lemon, so we have had more than our share of repairs on it. Typically we go to ACA but occassionally we go to the dealer hoping something is covered under the warranty--but it rarely is. (One time ACA said an item was not covered under the warranty when it actually was, which was a big waste of money.) Recently our A/C (compressor and condensor) went out. The dealer quoted $850 including freon. I priced around and found $600. Then I found Lam's...he quoted us $450 for parts, labor and freon. Yes, the part was a rebuilt but that was o.k. with us. When we came to pick up the car he told us the bill was only $400 because he didn't need to put freon in. That's amazing that he is so honest he didn't just charge us $50 because we would never have known if he had put it in or not. I'm pretty certain the other places would have charged us the entire amount. read more

Lam Auto Repair is wonderful!!! My '06 Nissan Maxima was in desperate need of repair. My car would drive perfectly fine, but I started to notice that when I would make a right or left hand turn or put my car in reverse, my front driver-side would make a constant clicking sound that ended up getting louder. Feeling that something major was going on, I call Carson Nissan to see if I can get an idea of what this clicking noise is going to cost me. I have been getting regular services there since I've had my car so I figured they were a good first step. The representative informs me they can't diagnois the issue over the phone, but they can do a diagnostic which would run me roughly $115.00. $115.00?!?!? Just to tell me what is wrong with my car??? Thanks, but I'll pass. Desperate to find out what is wrong with my car without the diagnostic costing me my arms, legs, and unborn children, I log on to Yelp and come across Lam Auto Repair. Not only were the reviews good, but the location was very close to my job which worked out perfectly for me. I call and was told to bring my car in where they can check and see what the problem was, which I do just before closing time. Lam the owner gets in my car and after investigating the noise, determines I need new front struts and mounts. He also notices that my driver side CV boot had torn and all the grease inside of it was gone. It was beyond repairing or replacing, I was going to need a new driver side axle. With each new problem he uncovered, the "cha-ching" of a cash register rang in my head. Fearful that the repairs were going to be way out of my price range, I ask Lam what would the repair of all this cost me. After calculating the cost of the parts and labor, Lam told me the total cost was going to be around $440.00. I stood there, waiting for him to burst out in laughter and say "just kidding"... but he didn't. I darn near fainted in disbelief. I am not the most mechanically inclined person, but I knew that the replacement of just one of my struts could have easily cost that somewhere else. I was ecstatic! I told him I would come back bright and early the next morning so he could get started. I arrived around 8:30 am and at around 1:30 pm, I got a call stating that my car was ready. My car ride is so much smoother and quieter thanks to Lam and the mechanics at Lam Auto Repair. They provided great and friendly service while being honest, thorough, and inexpensive. Sad I gotta write this review but very disappointed. My Godfather, Mother, & I got multiple cars serviced here for almost 2 decades. Extremely disappointed because the work he & his crew had done before was good. But this last visit is the last time. Despite the owner be a busy man which I completely understand. He's extremely rude at times, unprofessional, forgetful, & shows favoritism amongst clients. Service is getting more horrible and slow in every department. He had my truck sitting in his lot for over 5 months total just to fix minor things I already had done. I would have thought he would be more assertive in finding the issues. If something went wrong he then tells me to bring it back. Either lie and say there's no space on his lot or have my vehicle parked for even longer periods of time. He never gave me a status of work needed to be done or estimate of the work until he was done and then slapped me with a $770 tab for a fuel injectors, oil change, Major tune up. Sad to say my car still having trouble. and took it to another mechanic whose getting a bad review as well. read more

When my check engine light came on, it was only natural that I bring my car to Lam. I had read all his yelp reviews and knew that he would be the one I'd bring my car to. He fixed my O2 sensors, a gas valve, my timing belt and a taillight that had gone out all for about $300. I brought it in on a Saturday when he'd opened at 8 and by 3 I had my car.
