Let's start by saying how awesome the girls at the front were. Especially Kelly and Cheryl. You can tell there heart was with the animals finding good homes. They truly love helping the animals and it shows. All of the gentleman that we're working with the dogs outside were extremely helpful in helping me find and do meet and greets with the animals. I also met Nelson the lead at the shelter and he was an absolute doll. You can tell his heart is with the shelter and the animals. The shelter itself was massive and sooo many dogs that need to be saved. With all that being said you have to have one bad apple in the bunch and that was sergeant Matthew ( can't remember his last name but it was long) let's just say that was my only negative thing to say about this pound. I had an interaction with him that was unfortunately very unpleasant. Field sergeant Matthew was rude and came across as belittling and passive-aggressive during our conversation. Instead of being helpful or respectful, the tone felt dismissive and unprofessional. I truly support the mission of this pound and the work they do for animals, which is why the interaction was so disappointing. I hope management encourages better communication so visitors and adopters feel respected and leave with adopting a pet and not with a bad taste in there mouth. I would 1,000 times over and over recommend this shelter. They are high kill shelter but it's not the shelter's fault it's the people in the community that do not spay and neuter and treat their animals The way they should be treated. I brought a stray dog into this shelter because I genuinely thought it was the right thing to do, and the entire experience turned into something upsetting and disappointing. Before coming in, I took the time to ask around to see if the dog belonged to anyone. No one recognized her. She was hiding when I found her, which already told me she was scared. I still brought her in hoping she would be safe and cared for. When I arrived at the shelter, I stood waiting at the front while the woman at the desk was on her phone. There was no clear direction or sense of urgency. I was eventually told someone would come help me, but the initial interaction already felt unprofessional and unwelcoming. When a staff member finally came out, she began scanning the dog for a microchip. During that process, the dog who was clearly frightened!!! bit her. Instead of handling the situation calmly and professionally, everything immediately turned chaotic. The dog ran, and in that moment, I instinctively called out "Bella," which is the name my son had given her while we had her. The staff member then aggressively questioned me, asking "IS THAT YOUR DOG?" in a way that felt accusatory. I explained that she was not my dog and that my son had simply named her, but I was still met with attitude. Meanwhile, my cousin who had been in the car, ran over to help after seeing the dog loose. She is not trained staff, yet she ended up being the one to physically grab the dog while multiple employees stood around watching. One employee even said something along the lines of "if the dog is comfortable, let her grab it," which was extremely concerning. Why are untrained people being expected to handle a scared animal in a situation like that? Once the dog was secured, the way she was handled was very upsetting to watch. The leash was pulled so tightly that it looked like she was being choked. The dog was clearly terrified!!!! so much so that she urinated and defecated on herself in that moment. Seeing an already scared animal be handled like that was honestly heartbreaking. I understand that working with stray animals is unpredictable and that bites can happen. However, that is part of the job, and it does not justify taking frustration out on the public or mishandling a frightened animal. What should have been a simple intake turned into a stressful, disorganized situation where there was a lack of professionalism, communication, and compassion. I came in trying to help, and instead left feeling blamed and disturbed by what I witnessed. People who bring in stray animals are doing the community a service. They should be met with guidance, professionalism, and care ! not confusion, hostility, and poor handling of animals. I truly hope this shelter improves both its staff training and the way situations like this are managed, for the sake of both the animals and the people trying to help them. read more

We have had a stray female pitbull, running around locally. Yesterday, our neighbor decided to take the dog to this shelter and received a not so inviting welcome. She tried to see if the place would take the dog and this extremely rude guy basically interrogated her asking her, Why didn't she take the dog to the Kern county shelter instead. I'm not sure why someone from an animal shelter would ask this type of question. As my neighbor was trying to explain the situation, this guy just walked away while she was in mid sentence. With this type of attitude, I can just imagine how they may treat the animals. This place will never be on our list to take any animal for shelter read more

On 03/23 I dropped an injured, stray cat to this shelter to receive medical care. I shared an interest in adopting him and the employees told me he would be ready for adoption on 03/26. I came that day to adopt him and was told he was not ready and to return the next day. On 03/27 I was waiting in line outside before they opened-I was 5th in line, grabbed a # off the wall and watched the employees disregard the number system and assisted people who were in line after me. I watched people that were behind me exit the building with their adopted pets before I was assisted. Regarding the medical issues, they left the wound completely open (a gaping hole on his hind, left leg) and told me they "assume it's probably a mass that needs to be removed" despite his "ready to go home" status. I can't commit to hundreds-thousands in pet bills, so if you can afford it, please adopt Kirk, an 8 year old cat that walked up to me on the road for medical help. The photos below are photos of his wound 03/23 when I took him to the shelter and 03/27 when I went to adopt him. They never mentioned the medical issues & I fully believe only said something about the "suspected mass" because I asked why his wound was the complete same as 03/23. I adopted a cat from this shelter not too long before, but my wife was favoring another cat with hind-leg paralysis that they didn't mention until she questioned if she was okay after seeing her unable to move properly. read more

it just depends i have adopted animals before but last week i had a puppy i was fostering to adopt I didn't know he was sick with Parvo the first day he was throwing up. I just thought he was carsick. He ate for the first three days but then he wouldn't Friday. I took him to my vet and that's what they told me. He was positive for Parvo they said I gave it to him. I have other animals. I don't have it. How was I supposed to give it to him but now they told me I can't ever adopt another animal again.from them i am so heartbroken they need a test their animals before they send them to other people instead of blaming the people who take them home. they did the same thing to my daughter a year ago. I adopted a 3 year old Ridgeback mixed dog, who had been at the shelter for almost two months. I actually live 50 miles away in Hollywood, but visited this shelter because I have friends that live out there and I had recently lost my dog after 14 years. I am very familiar with the three county shelters here in Los Angeles and they are overpopulated with aggressive breeds, such as pit bulls and I couldn't find a dog to quite match for me at these. By comparison, I found the Lancaster shelter to be exceptionally clean, the staff resonated a sincere care for the animals they kept there and I visited during feeding hours. Every animal got attention, a reasonable meal and the dogs were even given a treat with their dinners. I suppose adoption would be better if they afforded better scheduled hours to be open, but the adoption process went quite smoothly and I was allowed to take " Ringo" home the very same day. The only thing that I would recommend is the ability to Spend time with adoption candidates in an open grassy area, instead if the caged cubicles used for this purpose. Compared to the overcrowded, manic environment of the shelters in Los Angele, the Lancaster facility seems a a great improvement and provides a much healthier and happier option. read more

We have adopted our mare Sugar as well as our very funny, goofy poodle, Molly, at the Lancaster Shelter. Yesterday, we went to look at a dog who was a breed we were well familiar with. Upon entering the adoption center we were greeted by a very friendly staff. We inquired about the dog we were interested in, filled out a few papers and off we went. Our future dog was beautiful! And I commend the gentleman who arranged the interaction. He was caring, funny, and just a great guy. The office staff was outstanding, just as the were on the very first visit we had many years ago. We pick up our dog this next Thursday. Can't wait. We saved a life, that's the good part. As we were leaving the shelter a lady came in with a litter of puppies for intake. I rescued him 11/18 because they going to kill him on the19th. I'm 72 partially handicap, he was 13 months very active, I also on blood thinners so I used 6 band aids a week. I had to give him up, tried 9 places and they weren't taking dogs or wanting monthly donations. My last hope was the shelter, I ask if they were going kill him, he said not right away, they were going to put him up for adoption. all the people nice, he's only 16 months old and doesn't to die. Not a huge deal but the hours are wrong and are only open Monday to Saturday. I work Monday through Saturday looking for my first dog for my first house. But what really urge me was that the door was open and the employees are just standing gossiping and I ask can I adopt a dog and they rudely told me they are not open on Sundays. The staff isn't super energetic here but I didn't have any problems with them when I came in 2 weeks ago to adopt "Oliver" since been renamed to Angelo. I feel like the luckiest owner ever cause of how amazing my doggo is especially with how easy going and relaxed he is! He's my second rescue & I haven't had any complaints. Shelter told me he didn't like the leash and walks but from day 1 with me he has been house trained & loves going on walks to play outside or just use the bathroom. He's gotten attached to me real fast too & just loves being with his mama. The only thing is that he came with kennel cough which they didn't tell me about.... He was sneezing and snorting like crazy the first night with me into day 2 & 3.... Thankfully through the first 7 day free dog check up appts you can set up at select vets I found out what was going on and he has since stopped with the kennel cough. 5/5 cause I want this rescue to get referenced more for the animals sake read more

The only reason I'm giving 5 stars is so that it gets viewed more. The kennels are doubled up with dogs that are the sweetest and need homes. The staff on the other hand not so much. I came from Southern OC which took about 2.5 hrs. I had made an appt at 11:30 and thankfully made it at 11:15. (So much LA traffic) when I got there, the lady all the way to the furthest left desk said I could wait outside until my appt. Mind you, there is a waiting room inside. So since I had traveled for so long I asked if I could use the restroom and then go outside and she said yes. Which i did. Maybe 2-3 mins after I was outside, she comes out with the paperwork and stands there while I fill it out. Still early to my appt btw. So I fill it out give it to her and within the min, she comes out to get me and bring me through. They just have to be rude for no reason I think. So I came to rescue a particular dog that had 48 hrs left. When I got there, she was limping, had a gash on her head and her shoulder. They said it had happened that morning!BS! It had happened a few days earlier. And the "medic" was so argumentative when I was asking why she wasnot getting medical treatment. She said it's as it happens and right now they're "full" and haven't gotten to her. I call BS. I think you guys thought she was going to get euthanized and didn't want to help a sweet little old lady dog. DO BETTER! Let's save these pets! read more

The Lancaster and Palmdale shelters are the worst shelters I have ever dealt with. I have a copy of the Rules and Regulations for DACC. These two shelters do not even closely abide by any rules and regulations. These are their own rules and they are broken everyday. I am sickened and sad for all the dogs that are at these shelters. Please do not drop your dogs off at these shelters. They do nothing to help the dogs get adopted. They are rude and uncooperative to rescues and networkers. They kill dogs when they do not need to. They should be shut down. The administration in both of these facilities is beyond sub par. DACC fire the administration in both of these facilities ASAP because it's only a matter of time before there will be a lawsuit. The animals deserve better. NO shelters is better than these two extremely inhumane death traps. read more

I was looking to adopt a cat and i found one i liked so we (me and my sister) waited around fifteen mins for them to assist us only to be told that, that cat had an adoption processing. So i went to look for another and we had to wait around forty minutes for them to give us the paperwork. So we filled out the adoption paperwork did our one-on-ones and brought them home. My sisters cat had no issues. Mine on the other hand did not use the bathroom for around 6 hours. That was weird. She was being crazy like a kitten is and i saw a little white speck coming out of her. She had worms. So I had to get her dewormer the day she was brought home. The staff was not that friendly either. They said my sisters kitten was "destructive" and mine had a "biting problem." I mean they are kittens so. But neither have been true. I'm beyond happy and overwhelmed with how smooth my FIRST adoption took place. I had seen COPPER on their instagram page and across other adoption pages spreading awareness of his upcoming euthanization. My husband and I had seen it 2 days before I made the trip to Lancaster from the DTLA area. We called several times to make sure he's still there and AVAILABLE for adoption. Upon reading the yelp reviews, I became scared that I was gonna make a trip out there for nothing and be turned away... so i told my husband that I'd be myself anyway, give them no reason to be upset with me and my approach. Just like any person, i greeted them with excitement and they happily helped me with everything. ALL the women that were at the front desk were really kind! I was actually SHOCKED as most of these reviews were negative. So then they allowed me to go meet COPPER, and i instantly fell in love with my boy. They gave me the paperwork to fill in for the adoption, and even answered all my questions that i had regarding the adoption. He's a german shepherd, so the adoption fee was waived by an organization dedicated to german shepherds. I still donated the money i assumed i was gonna pay. But overall, my experience was EXTREMELY smooth and perfect! I've actually recommended my co workers to check out the shelter (even though its quite the drive from LA) if they're considering adopting. Just remember to always be kind and don't listen to all these reviews.... just approach with respect as these shelter employees deal with a lot... animals and people. and COPPER is absolutely adjusting well to our home and his little sister (whom we rescued more than a year ago) Thanks to the staff for making this adoption really easy. read more

I have several times over the years attempted to rescue an animal from this location. Every time we have been met with people who simply don't care about you or the animals they "care" for. There was always an excuse for any animal, I mean every single animal we inquired on, to not be available for adoption. This with the fact we were told that the un-adopted will be put down. Well here we go with my review, Yesterday at the forest E hull dog park, a lady and her dog Or attack by 2 big dogs. The humane society was called at 6:20 That there were 2 big dogs in the park the park inside the gate. At 7:15 a lady was attacked I called at 7:17 and the person on the other end was half asleep told me she got the call and hung up. I called back at 8:05 and she told me we get there when we get there. They got their way after 930 the guy picked up his dogs and they were out again. I called the 3rd time no one ever answered I call the 4th time and the gentleman said the supervisor would be calling me After her meeting. It's quite a drive from the SFV so just prepare for that to start. I came in with a list of dogs I wanted to see and walked around to try to narrow them down. The way to actually spend time with the dogs (and other animals) is extremely inefficient. There's plenty of volunteers around cleaning, feeding the animals but you have to go back inside, get a ticket and wait to be called in order to spend time with any animal. I waited a good 30 minutes in order to do this while the people ahead of me were paying for things, there to adopt, etc. It wasn't quick or easy just to say you want to play with a dog like it is at other shelters. The lady who met me to meet a dog was very friendly. I did ask if I could meet another dog but I was told in order for me to do that I would need to go back inside and get a number and wait again. WTF? They also only had 2 people working inside the office on a Saturday to assist you. Felt like a DMV tbh. I ended up not adopting a dog. The one I met I liked but it came in as a owner surrender with another dog and appeared to be bonded with her (hope they stay together) as I really only want 1 dog at this time. There were a couple others I would have liked to have spent time with but I didn't want to wait again so I just left. On one hand, there were a number of people there who wanted to adopt which was great but on the other hand, I imagine that there's people like me who just leave after realizing how there's a lot of back and forth or procedures in order to just meet some new friends. read more

Highly recommend adopting from Lancaster! My family and I have adopted several animals from the Lancaster shelter and they are always kind and helpful. I saw this sweet kitten girl on the website and made an appointment for the same day. At the shelter, they were very friendly and informative and after spending some time with the kitten and I decided to adopt her! Marvin from the staff was very efficient and helped get all the paperwork done quickly. I previously had a terrible experience at the Palmdale shelter so it was greatly appreciated how professional and friendly the staff at Lancaster are. Dog is constantly out, destroying property and chasing other peoples animals that are confined in their own backyards and this dog gets into the yard. I decided to visit this shelter when I saw a post about a puppy pitbull that was put on a 72 hour notice before they put her down (IE this is a kill shelter)... I left work as soon as I saw the post and drove an hour and a half to get there. The customer service (front desk girl) was lacking to say the least... very rude. Long story short they denied me from adopting the dog because I have a small dog at home and they didn't think the pitbull would get along with a small dogs. I said, no problem my mom can take my small dog... she is technically hers anyway! They ended up denying me from adopting her because they didn't trust that I would keep my small dog safe and give her to my mom. They do not allow family's to adopt dogs with children that are not in high school yet. We took one dog out named Simba to meet and the dog ended up taking 3 large poops and peed well over 2 times because it did not get taken out and refuses to poop in it's cage. It was 2pm in the day time. I find it disheartening and cruel to make restrictions that have no backing to them at all. They will put down a handful of dogs before giving them to loving homes because they have a restriction for ALL animals. Overall, My visit to this facility gave me even less hope in humanity. If a dog is wanted and the owners can provide proper training and love, give the damn dog to the family who wants it. I went to this shelter to check out a cat that I have been eyeing for about 3 weeks so I decided to go in the beginning of December. While I was there, I checked out other cats if there was a chance that the cat I saw was already adopted, which he was and I fell in love with another cat, but she wasn't available so I had to go back a week later. I got a meet and greet with her and literally 2 minutes later, I ran to the front desk and I adopted her. It's been 2 months now and she'd been the best cat I can ever asked for. I went to try to adopt a dog a few days ago, and the kennels were just so saddening. The dogs have no blankets despite being outside, and many had pee on the floor. Also, as I walked in to ask a question, the woman at the leftmost desk was pretty rude. Giving 2 stars because I know it's likely lack of funding that is messing this place up, but the workers weren't very helpful either. Overall this place is a pretty good place to adopt a pet, but I don't like how it's such a high kill shelter. My parents recently were searching for a new dog, and we checked out every shelter in the LA area. For some reason this shelter seems to get lots of really cute small dogs, and that coupled with the thought of rescuing a dog from a high kill shelter, made it worth the hour or so drive out here. One of the good things about going to a county shelter like this one, as opposed to a city shelter, is that you can place a hold on an animal if it's not available yet to adopt. The first person who places a hold gets the full day when the animal becomes available to come and adopt it. If they don't come and adopt the animal, then they go in order the next day of the other holds (they allow up to 5) depending on who shows up when the place opens. This way you know if you get the first hold you're guaranteed to get the animal if you want. At the city shelters, if more than one person is interested in an animal, they do a silent auction and I've heard of some people spending $1k+ just to ensure they got the animal. It seemed like the dogs were well taken care of and my parents fell in love with a little white mix and adopted her. They couldn't be happier. read more

I sit here looking at a sweet foster dog that we pulled from Lancaster a few weeks ago. She is a biggie and she is all black. Biggies and blackies don't make it of out a shelter often, especially a place like the Lancaster shelter. What a shame. This biggie is super sweet and will be a fantastic family pet. The drive to Lancaster isn't scenic. It isn't short. It's often ridiculously hot. The journey to something special is often fraught with discomfort and this holds true here. Lancaster is a big shelter. It's a full shelter. People in the community seem to fail to give rabies shots, get their pets fixed, or care too much. This makes it hard to get out of this shelter for all of these adorable animals. Animals here more frequently are PTS than not. There are lots of adorable littles here: pugs, terriers, and fluffies of all sorts. There are handsome biggies here: dane mixes, labs galore, and lots of german shepherds. You guessed it: there are lots of kissy pitties and pocket-sized Chi's here, too. Let's not forget the cuddly kitties. -2 stars for those people in the community who aren't responsible pet owners -1 star for an overcrowded shelter that euthanizes frequently and in large batches each week +1 stars for the brave, rarely daunted rescue groups that make the trip and the time to help these pets out +2 stars for the responsible pet owners who find their next family member here +3 stars for the pets here...adorable, sweet, smart, and patient In short, don't buy. Adopt. Remember to spay and neuter. Never forget that your pet will show you unflinching loyalty and hope for yours. I have been rescuing dogs for over a decade and this was by far the most ridiculous experience of my life. We saw two SENIOR dogs getting networked on FB. They are a bonded pair and needed to be adopted together. We called the shelter before driving an hour away from home and Shirley stated that the dogs are available and there is no hold, first come first serve. After driving for an hour we spoke to SHIRLEY at the front desk who told us the Dogs were available and asked if we wanted to view them, we said yes. She then walked to the back, came back and said I'm sorry there appears to be a hold on this dog. A rescue placed it earlier this morning. I asked why when I called was I given false information?! Furthermore why is it that when I walked through the doors of this shelter was I once again given FALSE information? It came down to people on FB having to reach out to the rescues assistant to have her try over and over to get through to the shelter. The sergeant Manny Gonzalez then came out and got pretty loud with both of us, explaining WHY he chose to place a "complementary" hold. I was told these shelters don't even place holds on animals. He then said he has no idea why his staff was misinformed and this clueless. We wasted close to 3 hours here for everything to get sorted out. NEVER dealing with this shelter again. Also we were told that the dogs was at risk for euthanasia due to it having no interest in the time they were there.. they were there for 6 days!!!!! That alone tells you everything you need to know. Staff needs training, sergeant needs to learn How to speak to people who come to his shelter to adopt the dogs that they are so quick to euthanize. read more

I have been waiting to get a dog for some time now and found a puppy online through the LA county website. I called and got on a "list" and they told me that exactly at 11:30am they will start calling names. They do not mess around when it comes to who is standing at the door at exactly 11:30 so if youre on a list- be there! The paperwork was quick and easy, the employees were amazing and truly helpful. In a county that has a ton of retiree cash available, (Enough to build a grandiose new courthouse complex), they use an old concrete building down by the dump. It is also the only "KILL SHELTER" in the area. If you want to adopt, they are only open for 1-2 hours a day. There are a few mass entry cells, and a room next door where they kill the dogs no one claims in 5 days. I don't want to leave out the amenities. There is a drainage system where the urine goes in to a drain. Just visit the place. No one wants to, because they can't stomach it. Don't deny. Just visit the place. This is an area, where they chain dogs in hunt clubs, to barrels, for protection from the elements, and starve them just for fun. This is the only animal shelter for the entire Antelope Valley. They are always full to capacity and if you want to adopt a pet there will be plenty to choose from. There are four dog barns and one large cat barn. One to two barns are usually full of pit bulls. The remaining two barns contain other large breeds and a collection of mixed breed small dogs, usually 5 to a pen. There are usually several German shepherds and a variety of mixed breeds. The cat barn is full of kittens and cats. I have had two experiences adopting kittens from this shelter. The first time I adopted a cute little fluffy black calico. In the car I noticed that it seemed to have trouble breathing. I took it straight to the emergency vet before even going home and they recommended that I have it put down as it was already too far gone with some respiratory illness. Then I had to get a special form filled out from that vet in order to get a refund from the shelter. After that sad experience I didn't think I would ever adopt from them again. A few years later I stopped by to look at the kittens again and I saw a really cute orange kitten that I took home. I had a much better experience with him although he was a wild kitten and a crazy cat. I've had him for three years now and he's turned out alright. This is not a rescue where the animals have been looked after and are ready for adoption. The people who work in this place discriminate and are rude. I found a poor little dog on the street in the rain and I took him to that place. They didn't want to receive him because I took him with a bow from my dog. They thought the dog was mine, they made me go to Palmdale. supposedly because they were full, when I got to palmdale they told me that they couldn't receive it because the dog had been found in lancaster, they told me Lancaster shelter always do that and that is incorrect.I went back and they received the dog but they even put my address on map to see If the dog was mine . those people are not professional at all, they wanted me to leave the dog abandoned in the rain, but I will report it to the city. I hope that the employee Mayra acts with more professionalism, like her partner on duty. read more

Called 3 days ago for a dead animal and no one ever showed up. Called multiple times only to be given the run around time after time. Previously tried to make an appointment to adopt a dog and waited on hold for about an hour. Worst animal shelter! read more

Waited 2 hours early with my kids to adopt a dog on the available adoption day. When they finally opened we were told we can't adopt the dog because the list was full. WHAT LIST!! HOW ABOUT UPDATING YOUR WEBSITE ON ADOPTION POLICIES AND IN PERSON POLICIES AS WELL. I'm convinced they play favorites and someone on the inside got it.
