This Animal care facility is relatively far from Los Angeles, but worth the drive. A lot of puppies and large dogs are available and are kept relatively clean. I almost got a puppy, but he would have been a huge dog!

03/27, the day I went to adopt him "ready to go home status"

On 03/23 I dropped an injured, stray cat to this shelter to receive medical care. I shared an interest in adopting him and the employees told me he would be ready for adoption on 03/26. I came that day to adopt him and was told he was not ready and to return the next day. On 03/27 I was waiting in line outside before they opened-I was 5th in line, grabbed a # off the wall and watched the employees disregard the number system and assisted people who were in line after me. I watched people that were behind me exit the building with their adopted pets before I was assisted. Regarding the medical issues, they left the wound completely open (a gaping hole on his hind, left leg) and told me they "assume it's probably a mass that needs to be removed" despite his "ready to go home" status. I can't commit to hundreds-thousands in pet bills, so if you can afford it, please adopt Kirk, an 8 year old cat that walked up to me on the road for medical help. The photos below are photos of his wound 03/23 when I took him to the shelter and 03/27 when I went to adopt him. They never mentioned the medical issues & I fully believe only said something about the "suspected mass" because I asked why his wound was the complete same as 03/23. I adopted a cat from this shelter not too long before, but my wife was favoring another cat with hind-leg paralysis that they didn't mention until she questioned if she was okay after seeing her unable to move properly.

The staff isn't super energetic here but I didn't have any problems with them when I came in 2 weeks ago to adopt "Oliver" since been renamed to Angelo. I feel like the luckiest owner ever cause of how amazing my doggo is especially with how easy going and relaxed he is! He's my second rescue & I haven't had any complaints. Shelter told me he didn't like the leash and walks but from day 1 with me he has been house trained & loves going on walks to play outside or just use the bathroom. He's gotten attached to me real fast too & just loves being with his mama. The only thing is that he came with kennel cough which they didn't tell me about.... He was sneezing and snorting like crazy the first night with me into day 2 & 3.... Thankfully through the first 7 day free dog check up appts you can set up at select vets I found out what was going on and he has since stopped with the kennel cough. 5/5 cause I want this rescue to get referenced more for the animals sake

Happiest dog. Rescued her and searching for her forever home!

The only reason I'm giving 5 stars is so that it gets viewed more. The kennels are doubled up with dogs that are the sweetest and need homes. The staff on the other hand not so much. I came from Southern OC which took about 2.5 hrs. I had made an appt at 11:30 and thankfully made it at 11:15. (So much LA traffic) when I got there, the lady all the way to the furthest left desk said I could wait outside until my appt. Mind you, there is a waiting room inside. So since I had traveled for so long I asked if I could use the restroom and then go outside and she said yes. Which i did. Maybe 2-3 mins after I was outside, she comes out with the paperwork and stands there while I fill it out. Still early to my appt btw. So I fill it out give it to her and within the min, she comes out to get me and bring me through. They just have to be rude for no reason I think. So I came to rescue a particular dog that had 48 hrs left. When I got there, she was limping, had a gash on her head and her shoulder. They said it had happened that morning!BS! It had happened a few days earlier. And the "medic" was so argumentative when I was asking why she wasnot getting medical treatment. She said it's as it happens and right now they're "full" and haven't gotten to her. I call BS. I think you guys thought she was going to get euthanized and didn't want to help a sweet little old lady dog. DO BETTER! Let's save these pets!

The cat i wanted but had and adoption in progress

I was looking to adopt a cat and i found one i liked so we (me and my sister) waited around fifteen mins for them to assist us only to be told that, that cat had an adoption processing. So i went to look for another and we had to wait around forty minutes for them to give us the paperwork. So we filled out the adoption paperwork did our one-on-ones and brought them home. My sisters cat had no issues. Mine on the other hand did not use the bathroom for around 6 hours. That was weird. She was being crazy like a kitten is and i saw a little white speck coming out of her. She had worms. So I had to get her dewormer the day she was brought home. The staff was not that friendly either. They said my sisters kitten was "destructive" and mine had a "biting problem." I mean they are kittens so. But neither have been true. A couple days later i saw the kitten i originally wanted wasn't adopted yet

    Buffy (left) and COPPER (right).

I'm beyond happy and overwhelmed with how smooth my FIRST adoption took place. I had seen COPPER on their instagram page and across other adoption pages spreading awareness of his upcoming euthanization. My husband and I had seen it 2 days before I made the trip to Lancaster from the DTLA area. We called several times to make sure he's still there and AVAILABLE for adoption. Upon reading the yelp reviews, I became scared that I was gonna make a trip out there for nothing and be turned away... so i told my husband that I'd be myself anyway, give them no reason to be upset with me and my approach. Just like any person, i greeted them with excitement and they happily helped me with everything. ALL the women that were at the front desk were really kind! I was actually SHOCKED as most of these reviews were negative. So then they allowed me to go meet COPPER, and i instantly fell in love with my boy. They gave me the paperwork to fill in for the adoption, and even answered all my questions that i had regarding the adoption. He's a german shepherd, so the adoption fee was waived by an organization dedicated to german shepherds. I still donated the money i assumed i was gonna pay. But overall, my experience was EXTREMELY smooth and perfect! I've actually recommended my co workers to check out the shelter (even though its quite the drive from LA) if they're considering adopting. Just remember to always be kind and don't listen to all these reviews.... just approach with respect as these shelter employees deal with a lot... animals and people. and COPPER is absolutely adjusting well to our home and his little sister (whom we rescued more than a year ago) Thanks to the staff for making this adoption really easy.

    Marlene N.

There is however a caveat... when I met this rescue the person that gives their whole HEART and TIME to giving dogs a new life was jeopardizing the whole rescue outfit. How? By having her own dogs there, one of which is known to bite. In an OPEN enclosure. IF one of your dogs bites, have a sign up AND enclose the space! I'm sure time was an issue in setting up this display of beautiful dogs in need but DO NOT chastise dog lovers for trying to pet YOUR dogs that are in an OPEN enclosure. No one will ever negate you for bringing your own beautiful babies but for damn sure we're going to be pissed when you tell us not to pet dogs in an open enclosure at an adoption event. More importantly your rescue could be brought down in a split second by a litigious person who gets bit by an inviting OPEN corral of YOUR beautiful dogs. We in CO are used to very open dog lovers, but we are being populated by a different breed of humans; one person gets bit or forbid their child gets bit and your whole rescue could be brought down in a split second. If you ever need a pro-bono counsel to help you carry on your beautiful endeavours please respond to this review and I will find you one. I would rather not have to think this way but it is a fact of the world we live in. Your efforts as a rescue organization are superb, protect that effort with every avenue you have. Sincerely - a true dog lover.

Out of the blue in December, she became paraplegic and we had to have same day surgery to give her a chance to walk again. It's a $9600 surgery. Luckily she walked again after full on rehabilitation. But she injured herself again 5 months later. This is our first dog and I had no idea this breed has 1 chance out of 4 to get diagnosed with IVDD around the age of 4. I reached out to the breeder to get an idea if that was running in her family line and to let other families know that my dog had the issue so they can be proactive about it, most likely people who purchased a puppy from that litter has a much higher risk as it's genetic. Other people are going to run into the same issue, cost and major stress. They replied saying her parents were happy and healthy. No support whatsoever. This is a huge deal in my opinion and they aren't taking this seriously. I don't think I'm an isolated case. Anyone with a mini should take pet insurance at the very least we should have more information on IVDD from the breeder so we can be informed on the signs. If you don't get surgery within 24 hours, your dog will most likely be paralyzed. After surgery, she had to be 100% crated with strict instructions to manage pain with meds 3 times/day with food that we had to spoon feed. We were carrying her and holding her body trying to make her go potty. We had to have someone at the house 24/7 to ensure she's taken care of. Super long journey to get her back and she just injured herself again. Not as bad as she's walking still but it might be another episode of IVDD located elsewhere. I can't stress enough that the initial investment to get a puppy is just that.

I have a chunky longhaired chihuahua, asked for a trim and paid for extras like nail grind, tooth brush, etc. Waited until the 4.5 hour mark to call and check up on her, was told it would be another thirty to forty five minutes and they would ring me when she was ready. Okay, fine. I waited another hour and a half without getting a call, and decided that was enough. Get to the store (she's been here 6 hours at this point) and the groomer is just BARELY starting on her haircut. So wtf have you been doing with my dog this entire time? The groomer tells me 20 more minutes, she'd just gotten off her lunch break. I wait another hour in store before they're finished, and I am infuriated. No apologies, just excuse after excuse. "Oh the groomer is new, oh we're busy today, oh your dog needed extra attention for some matting she had". Bull. They charge me $86 and by the time I get home, I realize that she still has matting in her coat, her nails have not been trimmed, and her teeth have not been brushed. So what the actual f did I pay for and wait 7.5 hours for?
