Finally tried the Peking duck. Amazing!!! Loved the crispy skin. Service was excellent. Love this restaurant.

4.5 stars. Lao Sze Chuan is a chain Chinese restaurant that currently has a soft opening. The menu lists Chinese foods, American-Chinese foods, and sushi. My husband and I were walk-ins for a weekend lunch. The seating hostess and waitress promptly and courteously served us. The dining area looked a bit more upscale than most other Chinese restaurants' dining areas. (We, however, wore casual clothing such as jeans.) Here are my ratings for what we ate: Wonton Soup - 4.5 stars - My husband said that he liked the broth, and he seemed to also enjoy the two wontons. Steamed Pork Shumai - 4.5 stars - Three Cantonese-style pork dumplings consisted of an open-top wrapper and a filling that seemed to be mostly rice and had a subtle flavor of pork. Barbecue Pork Buns - 4.5 stars - Three fluffy buns contained some large pieces of sweet-savory Cantonese-barbecue pork. My husband described them as "good" and said "I like it." Orange Chicken - 4.5 stars - The serving size of this orange chicken was large enough for the two of us to share. Each piece of chicken had a nicely crispy exterior and flavorful sauce. My husband said, "Some of the best orange chicken I've had." It was slightly spicy and not just sweet. My husband's overall opinion was "higher-end Chinese" and "not much like it elsewhere." I agree. The total price was $40 plus tax and tip, which my husband said was more expensive than what many other Chinese restaurants charge but was still reasonable. read more

Went to Lao Sze Chuan recently and overall had a pretty solid experience. The portions are huge for the price, which we definitely appreciated. The Mongolian beef and the lo mein were both fantastic and full of flavor. Those alone would make me come back. The soup dumplings were tasty, but unfortunately every single one arrived burst, so there was no soup left inside. On top of that, they didn't come out until our meal was basically over. It seemed like a mistake, but no one acknowledged it, which was a little frustrating. Our waiter was friendly, just incredibly awkward, which made interactions feel a bit uncomfortable at times. We went at the very end of December during their soft opening and I'm sure they're still working out the kinks which is why they're getting three stars instead of two. Let's start with the good: the inside is very elevated and quite nice. There's plenty of seating inside and there's a handful of private rooms with large round tables as well. I've heard there are private karaoke rooms although I did not get to peek into them. The chongqing chicken was decent and so were the ribs and scallion pancakes we got. The braised pork belly in the pork belly dish was good and flavorful but the rest of that particular dish was not (more down below). They do have a bar and cocktail and other alcoholic options which is always nice to have. Here's the not so good: the rest of our dishes just weren't good. I recently went to Chengdu Gourmet which is James Beard nominated and the food there is excellent which made the contrast even more stark for me. The BBQ pork bao buns were just wrong and I've never had a bad one before. The texture of the buns was off and the filling inside was way way too sweet with an almost artificial level of sweetness. I couldn't put my finger on what was off on the mapo tofu for me but I hardly touched it (although to be my fair, the person I was with liked it just fine). The dumplings had hardly any filling and were almost just all dumpling wrapping. There were undercooked potatoes in the braised pork belly dish - they were so undercooked that I mistook them for some kind of nut at first and only realized they were potatoes when we asked our server what they were. Our server was nice but to add insult to injury, she called mochi "matchi" and really confused us until we realized what she meant. To be fair, we did not try any of the American Chinese dishes and I'm wondering if they would be any better based off of other people's reviews. I probably would not make the trek out here again from the city but if I lived in the area it might be worth a try. I was visiting Pittsburg and heard that a Lao Sze Chuan recently opened near where I was staying. It was a snowy day so we ordered takeout. Unfortunately, the food was more miss than hit. Here's what we ordered: 1. Sichuan Fish Fillet in Chili - This one was good and probably the best thing I got from there. Portion size was huge which was a plus. 2. Stir-fried Snow Pea Leaves - Again, portion size is large, but quality was so-so. A good amount of the leaves were wilted which is an indication that the vegetable has been sitting for a while and not very fresh. 3. Home-style tofu - Pretty standard dish. This was fine. 4. Yangzhou Fried Rice - Giant disappointment. This fried rice was made with spam, peas, carrots and egg. That's NOT Yangzhou fried rice. That's a fried rice you make in college when you're broke and have nothing in the fridge but some old rice, spam, and a bag of frozen carrots and peas. Yangzhou fried rice at the minimum should have shrimp and char siu (or chinese sausage as a substitute). 5. Amazing Crispy Chicken - Another huge disappointment. The Chinese name of this dish points to the popular crispy skin roast chicken that you see in a lot of authentic Chinese restaurants. What we got instead was sweet and sour chicken. We called the restaurant to let them know that they gave us the wrong dish. The manager there said that is the dish as it was made for the American palate. We were like what? You're supposed to be an authentic Sichuan restaurant. Also, you literally have sweet and sour chicken as a seperate item on the menu. So that just sounded like BS to us so they didn't have to refund us. 6. Signature Braised Pork Belly - Pretty good, but there were like 200 chestnuts and 10 pieces of pork. read more

Amazing experience with delicious food and great service. If you haven't been to Lao Sze Chuan you are truly missing out. The restaurant is well decorated more like a classy restaurant. Staff is very good and friendly. We started with two appetizers Spring rolls and pan fried dumplings both very good. I had the Shedded pork in garlic sauce and my husband had Mongolian beef he said it was the best Mongolian beef he ever had beef was very tender and taste was good, my pork was excellent both dishes come with steamed rice. Overall, good experience! The sushi was the star. Came out quick after ordering and very tasty! Great price for the size as well. Service was very quick and waiter made good suggestions. The vibe was much more formal than I expected, I felt underdressed in athletic clothes. My general Tso chicken was heavily breaded - I would not get it again. My family visited Lao Sze Chuan for the first time tonight. Considering this building used to be a Max & Ermas the atmosphere is very modern. The decor is beautiful. Our waitress was Lauren and she was decent, I wouldn't say the service was exceptional but it wasn't horrible. We all agreed things could have been explained a little better as first timers. The front desk receptionist was quite short and snappy with us, our table was ready and she walked way ahead of us to the point we had a hard time finding which table we were suppose to be at. The food was wonderful though, the sushi tasted fresh and our entrees were mostly up to par. We had asked for all white meat and NO breading on the Walnut chicken however it showed up with breading and it was not completely all white meat. I went for lunch on a Friday during their soft opening. The decor is much more upscale than expected, though everyone inside was very casual. They have some American Chinese food but are known for Szechuan specialities. We got lunch portions, and some dim sum. I got the chicken with garlic sauce and it was really good. Tender chicken, fresh vegetables. Lunch portions come with a side so I got the hot and sour soup. I am very particular about hot and sour soup and this one was great!! The dim sum was fine, nothing to write home about. Service and ambience were OK. Our server was pretty MIA after we got our food and since we were talking it was ok, but after like 30 min of not seeing him we had to stop him and ask for our check. Also, there was a tale seated near us of someone's relatives, either the girl was a server and off duty or she was related to one of the server's. They were kind of chaotic and their kids were creating a ton of commotion. Also another server spilled soup on someone. It was sort of crazy so hopefully their soft opening helps them tighten things up. If the service would not improve, it would be hard to justify the price! read more

My family and I had been dying to try it and couldn't wait until it opened. When my family came from OH to see a concert, we decided to have dinner there and celebrate. We had a great time. Jessica was an amazing waitress. She was so patient, kind, courteous and offered great food recommendations. We really enjoyed the orange chicken, sesame chicken, kung pao chicken and fried pot stickers. They were all really delicious. We don't think the Mongolian beef had much flavor. We also felt the soup dumplings werent the best and didn't have much soup which was disappointing. However, they're just starting out and we really liked everything else. A total standout restaurant in the Cranberry area. Fortunately, I was with friends so was able to try multiple items. We enjoyed the items pictured, but also had the triple pepper spicy chicken, the soup dumplings and a sushi roll. As for the apps pictured below, the stand outs were the cucumber salad, spicy wonton in red chili oil and fried dumplings. The spicy wonton was on par with my favorite sq hill establishment and the spicy cucumber salad offered a refreshing crunch(while a nice clean dressing) in between the other offerings. All of the items were cooked properly and the side sauces hit the mark. Soup dumplings were satisfying, but based on several other options around the city they were not my favorite. However, they are delicious. The scallion pancakes were a little oily for my liking, but tasty. The only thing I would not recommend was the Dan Dan as it felt like it was missing something (for my taste), however you might enjoy it. As for the chicken main dish(not pictured), it was great. A mix of sweet and hot peppers with a sweet/sour/umami sauce that hit the spot. I'd recommend ordering this over the other Chinese American chicken options(you know them, so try something different for once). While I usually will only order what is traditional to the restaurant's primary cuisine, my friends wanted to try the sushi. The fish was fresh and the roll was tasty, but I'd stick to the other dishes and save the sushi for the Japanese restaurants in town. All in all this is a very solid szechuan restaurant and most definitely one of the best overall restaurants in the Cranberry area. read more

Also had the three pepper chicken which was really good a little bit spicy for my wife but we got it number 6 I can usually do 10 and not feel it but they were good. Sort of reminded me of the Italian version scarpariello. We will go back and try some other things such as the sushi and other Chinese dishes. Went back a second time and had the shrimp egg roll chicken egg roll and the Shanghai roll which are all really good and fresh made. Also had the signature role which was a shrimp tempura roll topped with spicy crab and the dynamite roll which was a soft shell crab and spicy tuna avocado wrapped in soy paper. This used to be my new favorite restaurant that opened but sadly after multiple rude interactions with the staff working at the restaurant not only we won't go back but won't recommend this place to anyone. Owner needs to realize thst the lady working up ftont puts people on 25 min wait on the phone. That is unacceptable. If you are slammed or under staffed get more people working to answer the phone, plus she is extremely rude with an attitude. We went to dinner there this week at 9pm and two young girls working up front lied and said kitchen was closed. We gladly took the business over to Jimmy wan's. Sorry, we are done! :( read more

This is a tastefully decorated upscale Chinese restaurant, featuring an impressive traditional Chinese menu, along with American Chinese dishes that are popular. I came here for their lunch service and ordered the Songshu mandarin fish, fried intestines and twice cooked pork belly lunch special which came with hot and sour soup. The portions were generous and the flavors were all very excellent. I'm really looking forward to coming back to try more dishes, especially the Peking duck! Our second visit was amazing. We went for lunch on their official Grand Opening Day in February. They have now condensed their 2 menus into one large menu, meaning they did a great job with their soft opening seeing what worked and what didn't work and what people ordered most and liked. We sat near the sushi bar this time near the actual bar. We did make a reservation, which I suggest. It was especially busy today because of the official grand opening, and they had music and some special things going on today. This time we really wanted to try the cocktails, and although the cocktails are a little bit pricey, they were very well mixed, and both of us really enjoyed them. I had the lychee blossom & my husband has the sunlit passion. Yum! I got the spring rolls for a second time you get two small spring rolls, but they are not greasy and they are very crispy and I actually prefer spring rolls to egg rolls. My husband also ordered the wonton soup again, which is very good and is only $3.99 for a bowl. Since we both like eggplant and I had had eggplant with garlic sauce, the last time I dyed here, this time there was a new eggplant dish on the menu called Imperial Eggplant Dragon. Loved it! It is a fried eggplant that is very soft inside and it is in a sort of sweet chili sauce. One thing I don't ever order a Chinese restaurant is fried rice so this time I decided to order it because they had a truffle fried rice with prime beef. Both of us enjoyed it. We had leftovers of each dish to take home. We had expected when we came here the first time that their portions would be smaller, but they are not, and that was very pleasing to us.
