    Diced Chicken in Chongqing Style

Good overall experience. This is the North Hills location associated with the original restaurant in Squirrel Hill. The food is generally good, but they tend to overreach on menu breadth in an effort to appeal to a North Hills audience. The menu includes sushi and dim sum, but the restaurant really isn't optimized for filling those niches. They are really just checkboxes that seem to be demanded by the area. In terms of my overall dine-in experience, it seems that there are two different menus available. There is a traditional Chinese menu and more of an Americanized menu. The distinction between the two isn't made particularly clear in the menus themselves. You just need to know that it's important to understand which menu you're looking at. Having ordered from the traditional Chinese menu, the food was generally good. The service was friendly and helpful. The space was extensive, with plenty of room between tables. The beer options were somewhat underwhelming, but that's also not the restaurant's specialty. I will say that the Sam Adams bottle was on the verge of expiration, and the beer was somewhat oxidized, but I'm also sensitive to that particular flaw. The Yuengling was much more fresh, but it was still a Yuengling. All told, this was a good experience, but that experience depends on knowing which menu to order from and which beer is likely to be more fresh. As long as you order from the traditional Chinese menu, the food is likely to be pretty good. Just be sure to skip the dim sum: that's not their specialty.

Chengdu Gourmet 2 is a must go if you haven't been yet!! It's James Beard nominated chef Wei Zhu's second location in the North Hills with both traditional Chinese and American style Chinese menus - we went with dishes from the traditional menu. We ordered a variety of items to share family style and wow, what a top tier dinner! My personal favorites were the tender braised pork belly, the crispy and spicy chongqing chicken, and the green peppercorn whole fish filet that had a wonderful kick to it and adorable presentation. The inside is spacious with big tables with lazy Susan's that's perfect for groups. They have a couple of smaller private rooms. The service was so fast and they gave great recommendations! They were really nice and sent out three free dishes we didn't order for us to try.

We usually only ever get take out nowadays, but I was so surprised at how large the inside was! Definitely a great place to bring a lot of family/kids. This location is as good as the original location in squirrel hill. I've only ever ordered off of the traditional Chinese menu and my go-to will always be the sichuan chili oil dumplings!! I had been wanting to try their special braised pork belly too, which was absolutely delicious. Sad they ran out of snow pea shoots, but atleast they had the spinach leaves to substitute.

I stopped by here this past Friday night with my wife. This was about my 20th or so visit to Chengdu Gourmet 2 and I'm honestly surprised that I haven't reviewed it before now. The reason we come here so often is that I find it to be the most authentic Chinese restaurant I've come across in Pittsburgh. Each visit has been takeout and it's almost always on a Friday night. This location is on McKnight Road in the former Oriental Market building. There's a large bar area when you walk in, which is where I always pick up our order, and beyond that is a spacious dining area. We always place our orders online through their website, which redirects to ChowNow. The pickup timing has always been accurate and our food is ready and waiting when we arrive. On this particular visit I went with the beef and small peppers while my wife ordered the honey walnut chicken to share with our kids. We also got shrimp spring rolls and the corn and egg drop soup. This was actually my first time trying the beef and small peppers as my usual go-to is the three pepper chicken. I've also had the diced chicken in Chongqing style, eggplant and chicken, Mapo tofu, Dan Dan noodles, and a few others over the years. The beef dish was excellent. The meat had a nice coating and was very tender, and the peppers delivered a solid kick. It was spicy enough to grab my attention without being overwhelming or making me immediately reach for a drink. It might even rival the three pepper chicken as my regular order going forward. The honey walnut chicken was a hit with the kids and is something they specifically ask for sometimes. My daughter inhaled the egg drop soup, and my wife enjoyed the shrimp spring rolls. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. As a matter of fact, we already have many times over. Generally speaking, the food here is excellent, although there has been the occasional miss for me.

Kung pao noodle with chicken, peanut, scallion, and chiles

I can say this restaurant is ok. I came after reading the accolades, but my dish didn't live up to the hype. I'd ordered the kung pao chicken noodles. The noodles weren't stir fry, but rather in a sauce and didn't quite pick up the flavor as they should. The ratio of noodle to other ingredients seemed high. But the taste was ok, just needed a little bit more. I would return to try more menu items, but I'd probably check other places first.

We got here around 11:40am, we were the first customers :) They give you 2 menus - one American food and the other Chinese, make sure you order out of the Chinese menu. We got the following: - beef noodles - Eggplant in Garlic Sauce - Green bean with minced pork - Sichuan styled steamed pork belly with pickled mustard Overall, the foods could use more seasoning.... favorite was the green bean with minced pork. The eggplant was swimming in oil unfortunately. The pork belly was definitely precooked and reheated when ordered, while the meat was tender, some areas of the pork belly's meat was dry. The service was quick, food came out quickly. Typical Chinese restaurant layout, they got a fish tank in the back by the kitchen for your seafood.

Had an amazing experience for lunch. The service was SO quick, everything came out fresh and piping hot. My sashimi was light, and fresh, while my braised beef noodle soup was so filling and full of flavor. I also loved the passion fruit iced tea to finish it off! The restaurant had a welcome, inviting space and was very clean!

Takeout Chicken and Broccoli (American style) and Three Pepper Chicken (Traditional Chinese Style).

Disappointing, boring, bland This review is for a takeout order from Chengdu Gourmet 2. Online ordering process is fine. Order was filled promptly. We had one order of Chicken and Broccoli from the American Style Chinese Menu and one order of Three Pepper Diced Chicken from the Traditional Chinese Menu. Somehow these two dishes were the exact same chicken and brown sauce, with the only difference being in the type of vegetable. Both dishes were practically flavorless, with no spice or heat to speak of. We've enjoyed their food in the past but very disappointed this time. At nearly $40 for the two dishes, we would been better off with a random bag of something at Trader Joe's.

Chengdu 2 is just so good. I've visited this location three times and all of my visits have been wonderful and so tasty! You can be as adventurous or as reserved as you'd like when it comes to ordering, as they offer both a more American-style Chinese menu and a true Sichuan Chinese menu. I like a mix of both for my meal experiences! The service is quick and friendly, and their servers always provide suggestions and thoughts about spice level, what pairs well together, suggestions for any additional dishes, etc., which I always appreciate. The space is open and bright, perhaps not glamorous or super modern, but still very comfortable. Very accommodating to large parties with their lazy Susan tables! There is a sushi bar but we've yet to try sushi while at Chengdu - too many other options to try first! My husband has recently deemed this our "go-to Chinese spot" going forward, and I feel very lucky that we live so close to this Pittsburgh gem. My favorite dishes are (in no particular order): dan dan noodles with pork, Sichuan-style dumplings in chili oil, crispy pickled cucumber, shredded pork in garlic sauce, dry-fried green beans with minced pork, spicy beef with cumin, Chengdu-style kung pao chicken (specify Chengdu or Chinese-style!), pan-fried pork buns, and chicken with eggplant in garlic sauce. We still have so many more dishes to try!

After being told that Chengdu Gormet 2 (specifically 2 on McKnight) was some of the best Chinese food in the city, we absolutely had to try it. We went on a Monday around noon for lunch. The restaurant is spacious inside and it wasn't too busy. Its a comfortable space with comfortable seating. The lunch special prices were insane....ly good! I the orange chicken special for $10.95. The food came within 5 minutes of ordering. I was happily full after my meal! One of the best things about the orange chicken here (my favorite dish in general) was that the chicken was very juicy but wasn't oily! The sauce had a great consistency as well. The servers and workers were all very nice as well! This place has become my favorite Chinese food restaurant in the city for sure, I can't recommend this place enough!

First time trying Chengdu Gourmet 2! The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, and you can tell it is a newer restaurant and is well maintained. We went at an off time so it was not crowded. The food was really good, and definitely is going to be my go-to comfort take out food.

Traditional Sichuan cuisine is right. I ordered the chicken flaming pan and it looked just as good as it tastes. It's a slow heat with beautiful combination of flavors and textures. I also ordered the lemon tea, delicious and quenching! Joyce was such a sweet and efficient server. I love the range of table sizes, many with turntables for sharing! I also love the mural and decor!

The food, atmosphere and service here were all amazing! The first thing my boyfriend said is "wow, I really like the vibe in here." We ordered crab rangoons, honey walnut shrimp, shrimp fried rice and steamed pork dumplings. They were all so good and you can tell they were freshly made. Service was great and the food was so quick!

It did look like something out of a movie scene, and it was extremely busy due to it being a Saturday night. Our server was this sweet lady who had tons of large party groups. She got us our water and took our appetizer orders. We got the Vegetable and Shrimp egg rolls, and they are on the larger side, so order 1 if it's just you. My sister and I split it one and were happy with that. The egg rolls come with sweet and sour sauce and a wasabi/horseradish dipping sauce. I could smell it for days; that stuff is so strong. It took a bit to get our orders in, but we were okay with that since we were all catching up with each other. We then placed our orders, and I got the Shrimp and Garlic Sauce meal and which stated it was on the spicier side, but it was a bit mild for my taste. Mind you, I like fiery spice, but it did keep me from sweating. We also got the Beef with mixed vegetables and the beef with string beans. Both dishes were tasty and not too spicy. This is great for people who can not handle too much spice. We were there for a bit, and we paid our bills and were out. The portions are huge, so we all left with boxes. 4 stars for sure!

The front of house staff were very kind and helpful, but they also seemed to be stretched a little thin. In terms of the food, everything was packed with flavor and texture. I particularly enjoy the Sichuan pickled vegetables, which tend to be a combination of pickled radish and tiny peppers with some heat coming from dried pepper flakes. The spicy wood ear mushroom is another nice appetizer. We ordered several different items, but the squid in hot and spicy pot really stood out. Our dish didn't match the photos on the ordering page, but I would argue that the result was even better. A nice balance of spice and dried hot peppers, without being overwhelming. A nice crunch from some sliced taro root. A nice texture from both squid and fish cakes. The quick fried cabbage and sautéed snow pea leaves were both excellent pairings and added some vegetable matter. All told, this continues to be an excellent destination. Highly recommended for both dine-in and take-out.

The soup bowl was the largest I've ever seen. My plate of chonqing chicken was at least 3-4 portions. I was a little surprised by the level of spice on the chonqing chicken. It was extremely spicy and there was no indication of that when I ordered. It would've been nice for the server to confirm that I could handle that level of heat. I barely ate 1/4 in the restaurant, took some home, tried to doctor it up/cool it down, but it was borderline inedible for me. I loved the layout of the place. It was a little outdated and the bathroom wasn't the nicest, but the furniture and ambiance was relaxing. Parking is on the street.

It had a bit of a caramelized sugar flavor reminiscent of waffles with syrup. The spicy oil splashed noodles, one of the noodle dishes on the menu, was generally lacking: some nice toppings, but not much flavor. She did not speak much English, and she nodded and then walked away before I could finish ordering. But that is OK, because the serving size for the grilled fish was huge and enough for me. The Classic Spicy Grilled Fish was brought in a large tray to my booth. I am not sure of the type of fish, but it and its accompanying vegetables tasted delicious. White rice was on the side. Later, I ordered fried sticky rice cake with brown sugar and dipping sauce. They reminded me of donuts with a chewy inside, and I liked them very much.
