Stopped by Laoban Dumplings on a recent visit to Union Market. Ordered the ginger chicken dumplings and Beijing pork dumplings and found them both to be just okay. I liked how the skin of both dumplings weren't too thick, but found them both to be lacking in flavor. Definitely nothing memorable about these dumplings, unfortunately. Out of the two, preference was for the Beijing pork dumplings, though. read more

A dumpling is not a dumpling unless it's a dumpling! I only ordered five and they were good and filling. I like that I can place my order and walk away for 7 to 8 minutes and come back and my dumplings are steamed to perfection. You can also buy some of the more popular Asian dish needs, everything from fish and hoisin sauce and rice to bagged desserts. The service was good as well and that is important. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because there are better dumplings out there but these are pretty good. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but I just can't get behind a restaurant that treats its product with such disregard. If you serve mostly dumplings and you know they're sticky, why on earth would you serve them out of paper containers?? Every single dumpling stuck within seconds. And each tore, despite careful coaxing. This place brags about its soup dumplings, and the whole point of a soup dumpling is to enjoy the soup within, but all of the soup leaks out into the takeout container because the dumpling tore! Am I missing something?? I'll tell you what I'm missing: The bottom half of my dumplings. read more

Generally disappointing experience all around today at Laoban. Unpleasant, sulking cashier. Ordered Dan Dan noodles which were small and of minimal taste for $12- cashier added the tip himself without asking. Food was premade and handed over immediately. Edible but overpriced and largely tasteless, wouldn't go back. read more

The literal WORST so called "soup" dumplings ever! There was absolutely no soup on them. And they were not hot at all. The soup dumplings at Trader Joe's go harder than these basura of dumplings. So disappointed. Nothing is worse than overpaying for garbage food. The service was friendly. read more

These were okay. I didn't really like the flavor of the veggies inside and honestly I hate to say this, but the frozen dumplings I get from H Mart are way better. They were pretty cheap- $8 for 5 dumplings, but they weren't very good and the cashier wasn't the nicest and didn't know what was in the dumplings. They were made to order though! read more

Always wanted to try this place in the Union Market so finally found an opportunity to go there on a weekday when it's relatively quiet and much easier finding a place to sit - either in front or up on the rooftop. We tried all the flavors - chicken, pork, veggies and the special pastrami dumplings. I was a bit dubious about the pastrami but it turned out to be quite interesting. The chicken and pork are both flavorful as well. Not too excited by the veggie kind however. The sauces are all different - peppery for the chicken, vinegary for the pork, and sweetish tangy for the pastrami. Dumpling size is not big, you buy them in 5, 8, and 11 piece portions, and for a light meal you'll need at least 11 pieces. read more

Unfortunately the dumplings here are not that great. I tried the chicken along with pork dumplings, and they were okay, mediocre honestly. They lacked flavor and were smaller (both in size and filling) than expected. The staff here were really nice and friendly though. read more

One of food items ordered at Union Market..which says a lot considering the vast options! Ordered the classic dumplings living on the vedge also known as veggie dumplings and ginger Chicken and also chef Tien lemongrass chicken dumplings which were all tasty but not to point where i would comeback and get them again. But they hit the spot for my hunger that day. I have a vast amount of dumpling options bring in Tristate NYC/NJ so the competition and flavor hard to top. But the dumpling was fresh and not over cooked. It was just right and not chewy. But customer service and wait time pretty quick for Saturday afternoon. read more

Man I wanted to enjoy this. I should've known from the lack of customers despite a busy location. The decor, the location, the collab with other restaurants - everything screams that this should've been tasty. Unfortunately, my expectations were not met. In fact, it blew me away with how poorly they tasted. The collab with Call Your Mother's Deli was interesting at least. Location is great. Decor was nice. But that's about it. It failed where it matter. Expensive, tiny dumplings. Soup dumplings taste like watered down soup. Regular dumplings were alright, but I enjoy my frozen dumplings steamed at home equally if not more. I had hopes and they were crushed. Would not recommend. read more

Did 8 dumplings to go one week day we were at union market. Did a mix of the pork and chicken. The food came out instantly which I liked but then realized that's problematic but I understand why they have to do it that way. The chicken dumpling was very dry and lacking in flavor. The pork dumplings were flavorful and good. Not too dried out from all the steaming. The house made (I think) soy sauce was good and had something in it that gave it a bit of brightness. I like that the dumpling wrappers were thin but over all they lacked flavor so I think next time we were are at union market I'll try somewhere else. read more

Laoban is definitely one of my favorite dumpling shops in the area. I've missed having them in Foggy Bottom and it's great that they are in Union Market. I got the Beijing pork dumplings and they were delicious. I regret not ordering the dan dan mien, but I will next time. I also want to try the xiao long bao. read more

Got frozen dumplings to go. The employee was so freaking kind! Got the pork dumplings. The instructions are on the website and did I follow them? No because that would be too easy and clearly I have no unchanging of living life easy. So of course, I messed up. I tried to cook the dumplings after they had thawed for 5 hours. And obviously the dough was stuck together so I had to cook the dumplings as a lump of 11 dumplings stuck together. Still yummy. That sauce a must. I'll be back and cook them better next time read more

I just had my first Laoban experience. We scoffed at the Call Your Mother dumplings--until we tasted them. Pastrami dumplings with rye dough? AMAZING. But, I also loved the soup dumplings and other core dumplings. 10/10 would definitely come back. It's also super affordable compared to some of the Union Market fare! The staff are also super friendly and helpful if you need guidance as you order. Pro tip: the staff can only take cash tips at this time so everyone isn't touching the touch screen, so if you can, bring cash so they get some tip$. read more

Laoban is a small dumpling shop at Union Market, and it was one of three vendors my friend and I got food from recently when visiting Union Market. We shared an order of the ginger chicken dumplings, which we enjoyed. They were simple but the filling was really moist (I know we don't like that word, but how else to say that the filling wasn't dry?!) and the sauce on the side was good. Laoban Dumplings is a small dumpling shop in the very back on Union Market in Northeast D.C. Laoban means "old boss" in Mandarin and it's a nod to the dumpling shops found throughout China. This shop has one long wood table for dining in, but otherwise, food is served through a takeout window. They sell three types of dumplings that come in a serving of five or eight. You can pick from two sauces- "So So Sesame" and "Fiery Godmother," garlic, chilis, and black rice vinegar. They also sell three types of bao, cold dan dan noodles, and a few sides like cucumbers. For lunch, I ordered five Beijing pork dumplings with the "Fiery Godmother" sauce, cold dan dan noodles, and a soda. It was just over $20 total and very filling. The "Fiery Godmother" sauce is really good. The dan dan noodles are solid but could use a little more flavor. Overall, I recommend this spot, especially if you love dumplings! read more

Very unfortunate, maybe it was the time of day I went or covid-19 but the second I paid for both my pork soup dumplings and Beijing pork dumplings they were in a bag ready for my hand. That was the first sign that this was a disappointment Once I felt the box was still warm I thought there was hope to what I saw a second before..... I was wrong.... the dumplings were cold to a point that it was stiff and rubber like. No sensation or taste of a dumpling. I wish I could tell you what the taste of the dumplings had but I can't because it was eating 2 week dumpling wrappers that's been in the refrigerator and that's all you can sense when you put these in your mouth. The soup dumplings..... were like the Beijing pork dumplings which should tell the story itself. It might be because of the time of day 7pm and the pandemic but I will give it one more try and I hope it won't disappoint. Ps- I was super excited to try the Dan Dan Noodles and when I ordered I never received the noodles I'm happy I didn't get the experience to try and rate the noodles as I'll give it a second chance read more

After reading all these reviews, I want to give my two cents. These aren't show-stopping dumplings but one of the cheaper options in Union Market and that's why they're loved! They also have several different Asian cooking ingredients/groceries available for purchase (kewpie mayo, rice vinegar, soy sauce, etc.)! read more

Laoban Dumplings is one of the cutest shops in the market IMO. They have the dumplings that you can of course order fresh, steamed, and served with their dipping sauce, and you can also buy their dumplings frozen and take them home which I thought was pretty fun if you live close. Another thing I really liked about the shop was the small variety of imported products you can buy for home cooking as well. The Chicken-Ginger dumplings were nice, good texture and the ginger was flavorful, but not over powering. The soup dumplings weren't fully cooked, and I could tell by the sliminess of the undercooked noodle on the bottom, makes me think they were the same ones from the frozen case, and just cooked to order versus being freshly made. They were also much smaller than I was expecting (roughly the size of a quarter), which was disappointing because when you order soup dumplings it's the broth you're after -- mediocre flavor on those, I wouldn't seek them out again. read more

Stopped in on a whim - I ate everything at home which probably wasn't ideal, but the dumplings were pretty standard/nothing special there, the sesame noodles were good, Dan Dan were ok, and overall serving sizes were pretty tiny. $30 fed two people but we left hungry. read more

I was craving dumplings one day for lunch and decided to order from Laoban for delivery. I got the ginger chicken dumplings, Beijing pork dumplings, and the cucumber salad. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The good: the cucumber salad. It was well seasoned, refreshing, and great on a summer day. Definitely the highlight of the meal. The mediocre: the dumplings. The wrappers were kind of rubbery and the filling mostly bland. I really didn't taste ginger in the ginger dumplings, either. It just wasn't a very good dumpling, at least to me. The bad: the dipping sauces. I like salty food. But these were almost inedibly salty. Especially the "spicy" sauce (which also had no heat). All in all, while I can see myself maybe trying again next time I'm at Union Market, I don't anticipate seeking out out in the future. read more

Pretty average dumplings so they were good enough, but would probably find a better place or make my own next time. Ok, but it was amazing how fast it came out like right when we paid, we got our dumplings??? We got 5 of the Beijing Pork Dumplings. A bit overpriced since they weren't amazing. The sauce was a bit too vinegar-y for us so we added soy sauce to it when we got home. read more

They are mostly "miss" rather than a "hit". Yesterday's dumplings were not good. Dough felt either undercooked or old with a weird aftertaste you shouldn't get if the product is fresh. This was for two types of dumplings, the ginger chicken and soup pork. Won't be coming back knowing I've tried them about four times now and mostly have been subpar. How do you plan to stay afloat if the only one product you sell is mediocre? read more

I don't have a lot to add different than most of the other reviews. It really has all the trappings of a good dumpling joint. Texture and overall dumpling-ness is fine, but the flavor falls flat. The collaboration dumplings are marginally better than the regular menu items, but not enough to justify ordering. Staff is super friendly, location is great, and the fundamentals are all there. I hope they re-engineer their recipes to be bolder and more flavorful. read more

Soup dumplings the same you buy in the frozen section from Asian groceries like H-Mart/Great Wall. Cold Dan Dan noodles was bland, no spice, no flavor, no sauce, hardly meat tasted like cold spaghetti and nowhere close to Dan Dan noodles. So bad I threw them out and didn't eat most all of it. Cucumber salad was best thing I ate, and washed it down with my $4 bottled tea that Whole Foods sells for under $1.50? Service was nice, waited 15 min to get my food. Not coming back read more

Salad came out looking like a side salad on a large plate with five slices of rare, tough steak. It was so rare, that it was extremely hard to cut through, but again, who was I going to talk to about it. No wait staff would even look my way. I couldn't even get a refill on my water and there is no place in the app to order a glass of water...so that's that. Unfortunately it was just an extremely bad experience for $40. I'll be looking for dinner somewhere else tomorrow night.

I thought they should have provided a separate bowl and spoon to handle all of the empty shells and juices, but that Curry was fantastic. Curry as an alternative for wine sauce should be normalized. The sandwich tasted great, but the veggies were so greasy that the sandwich was very messy to handle. They provide towelettes whenever someone gets wings, they need those for that sandwich too. And I absolutely loved the Old Bay chips that came with it. I would definitely come back to chill for happy hour or the like. The music was at an oddly low volume, but still I'd recommend.
