Not sure if it was super fresh as I did find some plastic around the rim of the dish. The shrimp cracker was really good as well, dipped with the fish sauce!! Wish it was a but spicy though. Reservations accepted. We ordered tapioca pearl dumplings, crispy fried rice, coffee, and soy milk with grass jelly. The tapioca pearl dumplings filled with chicken, radish and peanuts came in five and were really delicious. The coconut crispy rice was made with crispy rice, cured pork, herbs and peanuts. We loved the texture and taste of the dish - it was very refreshing with the lettuce wrap, and combined with the house-made chilli sauce, elevated it. After these two dishes, we were full and took some coconut crispy rice home. Service was quick and friendly. Chef Dao came out to speak to us after our meal, and we could see the passion and love they put into each dish. Amazing Laos food is popping up in Toronto, and this is one of those spots. Lao Food Co also offers a monthly supper club, which is a three-course prixe fixe meal - which we plan on going to in the future. The restaurant is only open on weekends. Overall, we are excited to try this neighbourhood gem and would encourage others to try delicious Laotian food at Lao Food Co. Wong's is a small, family-run, casual restaurant which specializes in Hakka cuisine. We were greeted and seated upon arrival by our friendly server. We quickly decided upon our choices: Chicken Pakoras; Chili Chicken Dry; Bombay Chicken and Chicken MaPo Tofu. Pakoras and Chili Chicken are, for me, go-to Hakka orders when trying out a restaurant for the first time. Wong's passed the Pakora and Chili Chicken tests with flying colors! The Chicken Pakoras were substantial, crispy and flavorful. Perfectly spiced, they were accompanied by a delicious cilantro sauce. Our waitress recommended adding some of the chili sauce if we wanted some additional heat. My son enjoyed them with the chili; I personally felt that they were perfect with just the cilantro. Similarly, the Chili Chicken was among the best that we've ever had. The chicken was pleasantly crispy without the greasiness that often plagues chili chicken, and again, Wong's nailed the spicing. Certainly, some diners would want more heat and, aside from the chili sauce at the table, you can request various levels of spiciness. The Bombay Chicken was a first for me, and I was not disappointed. The chicken pieces were moist and very flavorful, with the pronounced smokiness that wok cooking can produce. The smoky, spicy taste was very satisfying, especially on a winter day. The Chicken Mapo Tofu was unlike any that I've ever had, and it was surprising but excellent. I'm accustomed to Sichuan style Mapo Tofu, and Wong's version was different: milder, and without the pleasantly numbing sichuan peppercorns. The result was a milder dish, but so well flavored that, while different, it retained the comfort of savory meat sauce and the soft tofu cubes. The texture was perfect, and it was complemented by the steamed rice, which came with our orders. The service was friendly, kind and helpful, and Chef Wong himself came out to ask about our meal. Happily, we were able to give him sincere compliments! We look forward to returning to try some of the helpful suggestions offered by our server. Great for a small group of friends or a family, and can accommodate larger party sizes as well. There is a small parking lot near the end of the plaza strip, and more underground parking as well. Food: The lobster combo was fantastic for our group of 3. The food came pretty quickly, with a great Thai mango salad to start and the curry lobster was served at the table with the curry being poured in front of us. The mango was nice and slightly sweet and sour, with a nice cracker crunch to compliment it. The curry lobster was nice and rich, with a thick curry/gravy perfect for the French bread loaf to soak in. The lobster was on the smaller side, but was nicely cooked and the flavour was a good balance of umami, sweet and savoury. The soup was also very rich with a sweet and sour flavour that paired nicely with the shrimp, mussels, and squid within. The pad kee mao was also very rich with thick noodles, beef, and a spicy, sour, and sweet flavour profile. The portion size was a little small for the pad kee mao and bread, but considering it was meant for 2 people, it was reasonable for the price. The dessert was a little disappointing, as the sticky rice was a bit on the softer side, and the mango was much too sour/tart yet still very ripe that threw off the dish. Had it been a bit sweeter, it would be a perfect cap to the combo. Service: The servers were friendly and generally out of the way unless you flagged them down. Cold water was refilled and we had to request for dessert to be brought over even though we had finished our meal. Not a big deal, as they were quite busy during a weekend lunch. Highly recommended "Canadian Thai" lobster combo, did not disappoint.
