I recently had to make the gutting choice to say goodbye to my beloved cat after a brief but intense illness. Because of how fast he was declining I ended up needing to request a same-day appointment from the ER vet (I'd wanted to do it at home if at all possible, but I'd expected to have more time with him so hadn't scheduled ahead). I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Amy and our overall experience with Lap of Love. We found out that our little buddy was terminally ill, quite unexpectedly. From the moment the Lap of Love team answered our panicked and sobbing call, to the hand delivery of our buddy's ashes, every need was cared for and consideration taken. The intake person for our case was exceptionally compassionate, calm, and calming. Especially important as I choked out my needs having just been informed of our companion's diagnosis. The follow-up emails, gentle calls, and text messages were kind and not at all invasive. Dr. Amy texted when on her way to our home, just to check in on our needs. She messaged as she parked and told us we could take our time, as our loved one decided to hide under the bed. I will go into detail, but the short version is, we had a great experience on an extremely difficult day. Dr. Miranda was compassionate, kind, and a calming presence. Long Form: I know there are many others who, like me, will do a bit of research before making decisions on companies or services utilize, checking reviews on Google, Yelp, and Reddit. I want to provide as many details as possible for others who are in my position. Reviewers tend to skew negative, myself included, typically only motivated to write reviews when frustrated or disappointed in the service. This is NOT one of those times. On a Tuesday, we had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to our cat of 14 years, and I reached out to several at-home service providers in the Chicagoland area. Company A quickly responded to the appointment inquiry, asked comprehensive questions about our situation, and then told us we would hear back from them and whether their practitioners would pick up our request in 24-48 hours. We had requested an appointment for Thursday morning. We did hear back about 24 hours later, but by that time, their first available appointment was not until the following Monday afternoon. We did not want to drag this process out over the weekend, both for our sake and our cat's sake. It was too painful to sit in anticipation of this for another week. This led us to contact two other companies in Chicago. The third company also responded and also had an appointment available Thursday morning, and they were extremely nice and supportive and even told us if anything should happen with our existing appointment, they would be able to help us. I thought this was generous and courteous of them, and obviously nothing happened to require their support, but it was a green flag for us. So if you are 'shopping' or unable to find an available time, know that the other options (Compassionate Veterinary Hospice) are also responsive and helpful. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Dr. Miranda called about 30 minutes prior to her arrival, and was extremely kind and had a welcoming presence upon arrival.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] She talked us through the process, and began the procedure with our cat calmly curled up in my husband's lap. She was knowledgeable about the diagnosis that brought us to this decision, which was comforting and meant a lot to us that she took the time to read over our case, our test results from our vet appointment, and also assured us that she understood the situation and why this was the choice we had to make. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As she began the process, she talked with us, shared her experience, and even got us to laugh and remember some happy memories of our cat as we said goodbye.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] She gained some trust and curiosity from our second cat who was watching warily from the stairs. Dr. Miranda let us take our time, did not make us feel rushed, and let us cry and grieve as we said goodbye. She made a memorial pawprint and a lock of fur for us while she gave us space to process. The entire procedure was done with our cat in my husband's lap, peacefully and gently crossing the rainbow bridge as we held him and showered him with love. When we were ready, Dr. Miranda tucked him into a soft blanket in a nice basket, and our appointment was complete. This is not an easy decision but being able to do this at home made is significantly more comfortable and we would absolutely do it again when the time comes. Someone picked up immediately both times I called. They were able to accommodate me the very next day, taking the last appt slot. My sweet girl passed in her sleep the night before the scheudled appt. I called them as soon as they opened, an emotional wreck, and asked them to still come to do the pawprints and take her body for cremation. They denied and canceled my appointment, leaving me hanging out to dry and having to figure out the cremation on my own after thinking I had everything planned.
