My wife and I came here for a birthday dinner and were blown away. You need to get the rooftop seating outside on a nice day for a wonderful sunset dinner. Staff were friendly with great recommendations. One thing to keep in mind is that the portions are fairly small but all incredibly delicious with wonderful flavors. The octopus was outstanding. I really enjoyed my mushroom ravioli and my wife's scallops were cooked to perfection. There are not a ton of veggie options if you're not also eating fish and I thought the mocktails weren't really worthwhile crafts but everything else from the amazing food to the vibe made up for that. What an amazing meal and 20th wedding anniversary. First! Service was outstanding. Attentive, anticipating, accommodating, friendly and professional. Now onto the food. First, this is not a restaurant that "melds" flavors. There is not a universal "taste" when you eat a dish. What you experience is each flavor note individually and than as a harmony--still separate but working together. Second, while the menu is set-up as "appetizers" "Pasta" and "Entrees", the pasta sizes are more appetizer size. Third, while the service was phenomenal, one criticism would be the text we received in advance that we would be limited to 11/2 at our table. I have been wanting to try the Lark for months! I made a reservation and needed to change it, but was after the deadline on Resy. I called the Lark directly and they were so nice! They helped me change the reservation and the number of people in the party and got me booked for the following evening very easily. I couldn't believe how busy they were when we got there. There is probably a great happy hour because the bar was jammed. We were seated immediately and our server came to take our drink order right away. We had some yummy cocktails while looking over the food menu. I had three very hungry men with me so we ordered a lot of food. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped steer us towards some items based on our food preferences. I cannot say that we didn't love everything we ate. All of the plates were delicious, but they were so busy that we didn't get our final orders until we had been sitting there for almost 2 1/2 hours. It was just too long. In fact, we sat so long between servings that frankly, we didn't feel like eating anymore. I'm not sure if there was a special event going on or if that is typical of the time it takes to have a meal there, but I definitely wasn't prepared for it on a school night! Finally hit Lark in Bala Cynwyd last night. Fortunately, they seated us outside, as I had inadvertently made reservations for Lark in San Francisco on Open Table (in which the BC restaurant does not participate.) Also, fortunately, it was a GORGEOUS evening with low humidity, 75F, and a very mild breeze. The inside was ridiculously loud... the kind of loud one expects from an Olde City 20-something club. Beautiful design, but we were happy gazing across the placid Schuylkill at Manayunk's verdant hills. There was definitely a big-city feel that belies the tranquil Main Line location. Service was impeccable. Wait staff knew the menu intimately, and a trip to the rest room meant your napkin got re-folded and placed on the table. Water glasses were instantly refilled, and servers appropriately inquired that our experience was as expected. Staff is on par with any 5-star. We were expecting "Mediterranean" - a broad category but certain to include fresh seafood, homemade pastas and unique seasonings. We didn't really expect some of the flavors that Chef Nick Elmi combined. Using local ingredients and fresh proteins (where possible) pretty much everything had an unexpected twist. The only dish that wasn't thrilling was the Gnocco Frito, which was likely authentic, was kind of like a hollow egg roll - puffed up to look huge on the plate, but kind of difficult to cut once inflated, and flavored mostly by a creamy, lemon graced ricotta (and the saltiness of the prosciutto.) Small plates are really the star here, but the scallops were perfectly done and just managed to ALMOST fill us up, leaving room for desserts. I guess a full baguette to sop up the various sauces would have helped, but alas, we were served two slices each with the escargot. The desserts were not sweet, as one would expect (except for the sugar in the strawberries.,) Chocolate was of the bittersweet variety and the marmalade added a sour tang. Pecorino cake tasted (as one might expect) like cheese. Pleasant, but again, unexpected, The food at Lark is not the kind that lets the subtleties of the ingredients speak for themselves, Certainly, a lot of thought went into the combinations and preparations that made each dish one that you could never say tasted "familiar." But I guess that's part of the appeal. The manager at the Marriott in Cohoshoken recommended the 23 minute drive (without traffic). Yes, we got to a Reinassance Inn. Yes, we took a separate elevator. And yes, when you reach the top, you enter elegance, views and a staff to just sweep you off your feet - happy, professional, polished and refreshing. The wine list is out of bounds (SHOCKED ME TO THE CORE), and the bar is as eclectic and creative as any NYC swank. Yep. And then, there is the FOOD. The dining experience is top notch. A small and yet dreamy menu. 3 parts. Appetizer, pasta and main. Seasonal and above all - fresh with a subtle elegance that is at par with any Michelin star. Seriously. The striper crudo was acidic, perfectly balanced and went OH SO WELL with the beautiful sparkling Chenin Blanc I chose. Then there was the steak tartare. Creamy. Protein-forward with slivers of parm and thin and crispy foccaccia (which seem to be the star in the restaurant because most tables had ordered the foccaccia and burratta - ok, so it is one of the cheapest appetizers, but still... amazing). The oohs and ahh's were prevalent. You know? That moment when you feast your eyes on the plate and then take that first bite? Yea, that one. Taleggio angolettini in an overnight caramalized the onion sauce that is ethereal. The sweet onion plays so well with the taleggio "bite". Total zen. Total balance. Then came the halibut with a paper thin, buttery and crunchy sourdough in a delicate lobster broth that was as flavorful as the crustacean itself. We also tried the octopus which was a bit on the chewy side, but that is not the fault of the kitchen but the supplier. I was not crazy to see it had sumac, BUT in the chef's elegant seasoning restraint, it was just right. PERFECTION. The flavors? Just so bulls-eye it made your toes curl. HAVE THE DESSERT! A beautiful new restaurant on top of the Residence Inn Marriott! Waterfront views in a brand new space. I've been to Laurel before coming here and was surprised at how much more spacious this place is. Unlike Laurel, this place doesn't require a set course meal, but the menu is set to recommend a 3 course style - starter, pasta, and entree. Our party of 2 ordered 3 appetizers, 1 pasta, and 1 entree to share and that was enough to fill us up. Creative, unique, unrivaled dishes. Don't skip on dessert, because they are amazing as well! They do have outdoor balcony space, but I believe that is not for dining. Looks like they will be using that space for bar seating/snacks once the warmer weather rolls along, which will be really neat considering it faces the river. Lark, the Elmi angels sing, glory to the new burb king! We had an amazing dinner last Friday. Service was impeccable (decrumbing the table and new plates after every course, friendly waiters, and the chef himself even made time for a selfie). Shout-out to our waiter Danny who made the night even more fun (and added a candle to dessert for my friend's birthday)! For cocktails we started with a mezcal pineapple cocktail served in a tiki glass and then had a fair amount of wine. We loved the decadent uni devilled eggs and charred brassicas. The lobster squid ink pasta and truffle ravioli were delicious and the steak and duck were cooked perfectly. For dessert we opted for the lemon cake and chocolate bar. We were not expecting the bar to come out wrapped (great to take to go), but once we unwrapped it and tasted the hazelnut cream inside we took back our initial underwhelmed thoughts. The bill was not cheap, definitely a splurge (about $100 pp), but cheaper than Elmi's city spot Laurel, and cutting down on wine could have significantly reduced the bill. The ambiance is great too, great lighting and high ceiling, but not too loud if it want to bring your mom or grandma. This weekend was the long-awaited grand opening of Nick Elmi's new restaurant and we could not wait to check it out. Lark is located on the 7th floor of the Residence Inn by Marriot in Bala Cynwd. Access the entrance where you see the bright neon bird outside. There will only be one option in the elevator to go straight to the 7th floor. The elevator doors opened from the other side, and we immediately stepped into a dimly lit, swanky, modern industrial styled space. It was beautiful inside! There were also tables outside, but since it had just rained and was also completely dark outside, we couldn't check out the views overlooking the Schuylkill River. We were brought to our table almost immediately. As we looked over the menus and the wine list, we noticed that the wine list was not very extensive, but definitely well crafted and reasonably priced. We chose the 2019 Mas de Gourgonnier, which was a very juicy and easy to drink, red blend to pair with our dinner. For food, my husband and I shared the two small plates, two pasta dishes, and a meat course. Smoked Trout Madeleines, Seaweed Butter, Black Radish ($11) - this was a salty, savory version of the Madeleine cake, which tasted a bit too eggy. It was delicious on its own. The seaweed butter and black radish didn't particular go with the madeleines, and to be honest, the black radish was bitter and did not provide enough acidity. Sea Urchin Deviled Eggs, Cured Yolk, Chive ($14) - tasted basically like a deviled egg with sea urchin on top. Delicious but nothing special. Squid Ink Chitarra, Lobster, Calamari, Garlic Bread Crumbs ($21) - flavorful squid ink pasta cooked al dente, an overall great dish. Roasted Mushroom Ravioli, Foie Gras, Hazelnut, Mugolio ($18) - great foie gras flavors, but the sauce was slightly sweeter than I would have liked. Would still recommend. Glazed Rohan Duck Breast, Preserved Huckleberry, Beluga Lentil ($36) - Rohan duck was chewy, but the beluga lentils were perfectly braised and had a ton of flavor. Confused why it was served with large chunks of beets because they did not complement the dish at all. Finally, dinner was concluded with a ricotta cake with lemon meyer ice cream, a simple and not too heavy, tasty dessert. Overall, I expected more innovation from a top chef winner, but I guess they decided to play it safe. Giving food 4 stars, but service gets 5 stars. I honestly can't say enough good things about the servers. Out of Laurel, Lark, and Royal Boucherie, service at Lark was the absolute best. Our servers were super nice, and checked on us several times. Our waters and wine were constantly refilled AND the table was also cleaned after each course, which I did not expect. Gonna have to round up and give 5 stars for our overall experience. I would definitely come back to Lark for the ambiance and the service. read more

I'd make eye contact to request her assistance, and she was giving way more attention/small talk to other tables. The ambience 5/5. I love birds and everything about the design inside. Food was awesome! Exciting to eat. You ever eat something and it makes you dance as you are cooking or eating? Just me? Okay. The oysters were delicious with unique textures of a jellied mignonette, green garlic oil. The agnolotti were pillows of heaven, bursting with cream and topped with crunchy onions. My fave. I ordered the steak and the server stated it comes medium rare, but that didn't register to me until I was home, under refrigerator light with my leftovers. The salsa verde sauce for the steak was deliscious. Hubby had the rigatoni, flavor was savory and deliscious. I suggest looking at the current prior to visiting. NGL, I'm struggling with this review. Here's a restaurant so close to being excellent, but with a big flaw that almost ruined a great dinner. This review is for the management as much as for other diners. If they're listening, please take my comments seriously. First thing you notice here is the dining room. Wow what a space - high ceilings, big windows, expansive view. Don't assume that being on top of a hotel makes this place tacky. It's a real-deal fine dining spot atop a super bland hotel. Whatever, get over it. Great bar, great vibe, great lighting. Perfect place for a special occasion. Menu is superb. Something for everyone, nothing off-putting or bizarre, you want to just try everything. Food: nearly perfect. It's rare to see dish after dish exhibiting above-average creativity, excellent doneness, great flavor combinations, and contrasts in texture and temperature. Apps: Octopus - wonderfully well cooked, tender, a sweet/tangy/savory sauce. It's a properly appetizer sized portion. Delicious. Artichoke - very tasty. Reminded me of a classic Roman style artichoke bottom confited in olive oil. Sauce was cheesy and rich. Portion size was generous. Green salad: memorably good. Simple, perfect leaves of lettuce dressed with this amazing concoction of miso and some other stuff, crunchy dukkah on top. Wow. Focaccia: tasty, but heavily doused in oil on its own. Serving with butter and oil we're overkill. Pasta: we tried the orichiette with shrimp and tomato sauce. This was 10/10. Perfect al dente pasta, some fresh tomato, some shrimp, and apparently some kind of magic because it was flawless. Mains: Sourdough crusted cod: delicious fish cooked perfectly. Fresh veg underneath, also cooked very well. Seasoning was amazing. The only flaw was this oily square of bread on top which wasn't really sourdough and brought nothing to the dish. The rest was wonderful. Dorade: Crispy skin served over squid ink, leeks, some other tasty bits I couldn't identify. A delicious fish dish. So far this is a terrific meal. Dessert: special "Portuguese egg tart" with mango curd. This one was just a total fail. Severely gummy undercooked pastry, an unacceptably small amount of egg custard, and the dish in no way reminded me of the classic egg tart. Kinda sucked actually. Now the worst flaw of all - the thing that costs two stars - the service. Our server (not a newbie, btw) really spoiled our experience. Note that this is an expensive place. So when we said we weren't super hungry and rattled off the things we liked - mostly appetizers and just one pasta and one main - she was flustered that we didn't order more food, said we'd be hungry if we didn't get another main course, and so we followed her advice. And she was kinda condescending and haughty about it. Not the attitude you ever want to see in a server. Well the apps were big and basically we were full before the pasta even arrived. We couldn't get over being levered into buying another $40 entree and we took a bunch of food home. Food that's not particularly good reheated. So please, if you're listening, don't press your wait staff to sell more entrees. You're close to having a truly great restaurant here. One that I'd drive an hour out of my way for. The bartender did it with confidence, with The Botanist gin per my request, and a recommendation to try it with Ginraw next (to be continued). My oh, my, what an incredible experience! Lark is hands-down, one of the top restaurants in the city right now...they are hitting on all cylinders from food to service to atmosphere. Before even getting into their standard value, I need to share this story of how they celebrated my mother-in-law. In my reservation, I had notated that we were celebrating a birthday, and as soon as we walked in and mentioned our names, they confirmed that we were still celebrating, which was reassuring to know that it was top of mind. When we sat down, they brought a cute birthday card with all of the staff signatures on it and wishing her happy birthday. That was then followed by complimentary sparkling white wine, which was a great way to toast to the evening (& tasty). Then, of course, as we closed out the night with dessert, they added a candle to her plate. This whole experience just really made it apparent that they pay attention to the little details across-the-board. Now, with that aside, the first thing I'll comment on is the atmosphere. With it being located off of City Avenue and set back with the Marriott hotel, there's plenty of parking (so know that that is an alleviated headache no matter where you are coming from in the city). You step inside and take the elevator to the top floor, and are immediately welcomed by the host staff (optional coat check). If you are early for your reservation or you're waiting for the rest of your party, they have a really cool lounge area where you can order drinks and take in views of the surrounding neighborhoods through their huge windows. All throughout the restaurant, they really leverage tall ceilings with modern design and filled with green luscious plants. It just had an overall fresh feeling, and not to mention, they had a great complimentary music vibe . When it comes to the food, Nicholas Elmi obviously has his reputation, and this met all expectations that you could ask for. The dishes were creative, centered around a Mediterranean theme and heavy on the appetizers, which are meant to be ordered in more of a tapas format. The menu features a variety of seafood, homemade pastas, and a few signature entrées. I seriously could not even pinpoint what my favorite dish was because they were all so good! Now, truly, I feel like the category that really separates a five-star restaurant from other top tier restaurants is the service. I believe that Elmi holds his restaurants to a high standard, but we were really fortunate with our waiter. He was fun, engaging, directional, and not overbearing. He helped us navigate the menu, provided great recommendations of both portion size and what to eat, and really leant in when he knew that my mother-in-law was celebrating her birthday. He made the night that much more enjoyable! Came to Lark for a date night on Saturday after seeing it on a few "best for" lists for Philadelphia. Its a very sexy restaurant with great lighting. It's cold now but it seems like they have a patio that, because they are on the seventh floor, would give a great view of the Schukyill River. Our service was divine. The food was light and tasty. We got the gnocco fritto, tuna tartare and jumbo shrimp cocktail. The shrimp was a big serving and had delicious sauce on it - not your usual shrimp cocktail appetizer. SO and I shared the branzino and halibut - both good with interesting sides/accompaniment and finally a shared olive oil cake with some of the most delicious greek yogurt gelato I have ever had. Super impressed with the food, service, and location! Plenty of parking and just outside of Philadelphia. I loved every dish - except the Pork Ragu one. That definitely needed more salt. You could taste that the Pasta did not have enough salt in the water when cooking as it tasted bland (watered) and the sauce could use more salt. I had a ton of courses and two desserts. Even though the one dish lacked salt, I would still return and dine here again. Being into wine, their wine list is great. Their wines by the glass offerings are wonderful too. It's a great selection. You can come here dressed up in dress pants, nice shirt, or dress or in jeans with a nice shirt. I would not recommend coming here in a t-shirt and shorts. You would feel out of place (or at least I would be for sure). Not a place for kids as the cuisine caters to a night out for a couple, large family gathering or a group getting together. My friend surprised me with a dinner here as an early birthday celebration so I had nothing to do with choosing the place. I saw that the chefs were advertised so I figured they must be good. The atmosphere was warm, slightly more "dressy" than casual which made the ambience even better. Everyone was very welcoming and polite, service was top tier. We had the devilled eggs which was nicer than anticipated, and the octopus which came in this amazing sauce, to start. I had the duck which was a smaller portion than anticipated, but still very good. My friend had the grilled trout and it was also delicious. I believe this was tiramisu I had for dessert which was also really good. All in all, I highly recommend. It's not the cheapest place but I think everything was worth it. I recently came here for a work meeting so we had a catered dinner in one of their large, private rooms. The ambiance was really nice and the service was great - the waitress remembered all of our orders in order so it was nice to just have your plate set in front of you while listening to a presentation without needing to communicate with the waitress about which plate belonged to which person. I had a salad appetizer and branzino entree - both were really good. The mini desserts given to the group at the end were especially a hit - the brownie bites and cookies were my personal favorite. First of all let me say that Lark is one of my favorite restaurants. Their dishes are creative and usually very good. Saying that my most recent trip was less than perfect. I went there recently with my wife for her birthday . We ordered two appetizers. I had the octopus which was very tasty, but just a tad on the tough side. My wife ordered a clam dish. It was prepared very well except the clams were gritty. I've cooked thousands of clams in my life and I know how to clean them. I would figure a restaurant as good as Lark would also know how to clean them. We ordered duck for dinner. This this was rather disappointing. I know duck is hard to cook but in a fine restaurant the duck should not have been tough. Both me and my wife remarked the duck was tough. The service was good except the waiter never asked if we wanted another drink or coffee. Lark is too good at restaurant to serve gritty clams and tough duck. read more

Exquisite location, views, stellar service, presentation, all on the main line, which comes with "main line tax" prices, especially with the wine list. There are a couple bottles in $60 range but most well above. The large orange wine selection was nice. We loved the striped bass ceviche, cappellatti, branzino, and pork milanese. The sea bass (surprisingly from pleasant point NJ!) was a bit over salted and the octopus slightly overcooked. More a 4.5 star overall but the service took it to 5. read more

So delicious! My husband got us a reservation for my birthday and we sat between two other couples celebrating birthdays. It was recommended by a friend and a pretty expensive meal, but we loved it. I can't remember most of what was in the dishes- we had to look up half of the ingredients or ask the waiter, but it was so fun. Every dish was an experience of flavor and texture. The waiter recommended an appetizer, pasta dish and main for each person, which is how it ends up costing so much. Definitely a special event / date night place. It is a rare occasion that I venture out of the city limits for a dining experience, so when my friend suggested Lark I was a bit hesitant. However, she was more than sure it would be a satisfying experience and she wasn't wrong. Lark is beautiful, with multiple rooms, dark wood, beautiful lighting and a killer outside roof deck. Our visit was in December so we dined inside but I stepped out to see what the attraction was and was astounded at the beauty of the lights and the bridge and the water. They definitely have the real estate. But you know what else they have? Beautiful food. Our appetizers were delicious and all of our pastas were rich, decedent and wonderfully executed. Order anything. This food is amazing. The chef has this on lock down. Our server, LaLa was efficient, knowledgeable and personable and made our dining experience a breeze. Order the panne cotta for dessert. Rich, creamy and decedent. The food here will make me come back and you know what else is a bonus? You can drive here and park your car in a huge parking lot. Where I come from that is unheard of. You definitely should venture out to Lark. You won't be sorry. read more

I've been to Lark around six times; this will be my last visit. The prices keep skyrocketing, the food and drinks are not nearly as creative as the prices, the service was polite, but they are most attentive giving you the bill. I had to flag down the waitress to put in my drink order; when I wanted a new drink, I ordered an after-dinner drink and was told it wasn't in. I tried to put in a different drink and then said the grappa was in. The bill came in seconds when my grappa was served with my espresso. At this point, my wife and I had been there under an hour. I had bought the $135 steak, and by the time we received our bill, we had been there an hour since we ordered dinner (with no appetizers). It is just a genuinely disappointing experience from a restaurant whose dedication to quality and service isn't nearly at the price point it is. read more
