It may be my taste preference - I usually like less saucy meats, or sauce on the side so I can taste the flavor the meat first and then add as much sauce as I like. Had high hopes for this place, seemed to have great Yelp reviews. My wife and I stopped in for lunch, first off the menu is a huge and difficult to understand what comes with what. Everything is a la carte and ends up being about $15-$20 per person. We ordered the brisket and pulled pork. Both were extremely underwhelming. Somewhat small portions, and basic, unimpressive sauce that comes slathered over all of it. Almost $4 for a 4oz serving of Mac and cheese. Just very dissatisfied, to top it off went for a refill, removed my lid to find 2 bugs frozen inside an ice cube, so gross. Won't ever be back. read more

As a man who cooks and judges BBQ for a living i have to say that this was some of the best BBQ from a restaurant that I've ever eaten. Everyone has a different idea of what makes BBQ great but I think larks can satisfy most reasonable people. The ribs were smokey and cooked perfectly. The bite was just like a great steak. Tender, moist, flavorful, but it didn't turn to mush in your mouth. The sauce was tangy and not too sweet with the slightest hint of heat at the end (white pepper and cayenne if I had to guess). The chicken was great too. Considering how juicy it was I think they brined it first before smoking. I would have liked for the sauce to have been cooked on it instead if just added right before being served but that's just a matter of personal preference. It was still pretty awesome. The service was top notch. The ladies working the counter were funny, friendly, and helpful. We also met one of the Larks who run the place and he was humble and accommodating. He treated us like family and took extra time to make sure we felt welcome. I really look forward to eating here again the next time we are in town and will be singing the praises of larks BBQ to anyone who will listen. read more

Food was good! I ordered rib tips. I wanted mild and hot sauce (cause I'm from Chicago and that's what I do). When I got my food a was a little disappointed because they put the hot sauce on the side. But baaaaabaaaaaay I want to thank the cook! The sauce was from hell it was soooooo hot!!!!!! If that would've been over my entire meal it would've been ruined. The meat was very tender, the sauce was good, the restaurant was clean and the employees were very nice and welcoming. Had family visiting from Texas and wanted to treat them to some BBQ. Had the best food and service at Larks! Willette recommended for our party of 7 that we get a dinner platter (feeds 4-6) that comes with several meat choices and sides. It was excellent! We had ribs, brisket, turkey, pulled pork and chicken and sides of corn, beans, cole slaw, French fries and sliced bread. We also added rib tips and a large order of fried okra (my favorite-crispy and not greasy!!) just to try it all, and we brought home several to-go boxes -- lunch for me tomorrow! :) Friendly service, delicious food and great conversation made for a wonderful evening. This is the real deal . When we walked up the bbq man was cleaning the cooking screens the smoker was on and smelled wonderful. The heritage of the location is a great story. The religious openness is refreshing. A challenging economy can be observed in the building close to the downtown. A thought provoking place to eat. Out here for work and a a craving for BBQ. This place hit the spot. I went to this place about once a week. You can't beat the prices on their combo meals. I love their rib and tip meat combo with the BBQ sauce in the side. I don't care for the toast they throw in, but don't mind the few potato wedges they throw in. Their other sides are pretty good too. Big fan of the deep fried chicken gizzards. Went there at around 5 pm or so and the ribs were still tasting like they came right off the smoker. This establishment has been a beloved part of Benton Harbor for over 20 years. They are known for their BBQ but my love is their catfish sandwich. I grew up eating this in high school and as I come back to visit, I always find myself coming back to get a catfish sandwich. They cook your food to order so unless you are planning to sit and eat in, I suggest you call it in so the wait isn't as long. I've been going to Lark's since they were attached to a hand car wash down the street. The hospitality is great, and Mr. Lark is a Benton Harbor community fixture. My buddy and I used to stop in there to pick up a Polish sausage with sauce before heading out on the boat. The quality of the Polish sausages (hot and mild) are great! I can also recommend their pulled pork... pricey, but good. Lark's sauce is also quite good. Unfortunately, I will not be ordering the rib tips or brisket ever again, and won't be risking the $ on a rack of ribs either. The meat is very tough, and the portions are small for the price. Baked beans used to be made by Mrs. Lark and were really good: the last time I ordered them, they tasted/looked just like Bush's out of the can. I'm not sure what Lark's is going for in their nicer, newer location. As far as I can tell, prices have gone way up and quality has gone down. I will continue to go there, but only for the Polish sausages. Sorry. read more

The food was fantastic!!!! Great atmosphere, and very friendly service!! I had the medium rib tip dinner, with mac-n-cheese, and potato salad. The ribs were delicious! I loved the smoke on them, and the sauce! The mac-n-cheese was right on point, homemade, baked with cheesy goodness!! The potato salad was really creamy, loved it! I left completely and utterly underwhelmed after eating a late lunch here today. The Mac and Cheese portion was over priced and very small. The corn nuggets were the only good thing on my plate. The pulled pork was bleh. I took two bites and threw the rest away. My husband found gnats in his ice when he opened his cup for a refill. Gag!!
