It's the kind of place where if you don't tell them what to put on your burger it comes mustard, all the way. The chocolate malt is what you'd expect from this drive-in lost in time, delicious! I've been getting fat off these delectable burgers since I was a Taylor Trojan and they are just as good today as they were when I was dripping mustard in my Dukes of Hazzard tshirt. I ordered the basket with the steak fingers, it came with fries, gravy and texas toast. Unfortunately the fries were very undercooked and soggy, the steak fingers were dry, thin and tasteless and the texas toast was dry, overcooked and almost burnt. My husband ordered a chili dog and was mildly disappointed with the fact it came with beans as beans are usually specified. We will be going back to Larry's eventually because you can't be sure about something unless you give it another crack - but this was a very disappointing first-time Larry's experience. read more

The staff was friendly and the whole thing just feels like you have stumbled on a secret treasure. I'm not an Abilene native but I believe I have come to understand the local affection for Larry's. For me it's a time capsule that takes me back to my childhood in East Texas, going to our local Dairy Queen, back in the days when Dairy Queens were drive-ins, with my young Mom and Dad. Walk up to the window, place your order and wait for it in the car. I'm in Abilene every month or two and I have developed a new tradition of getting burgers, rings, and malts at Larry's for myself and my daughter and son-in-laws young family. I have been looking for a good burger in Abilene for a long time. How I missed Larry's, I will never know. Now, this is my go-to burger place. Warning: This is an old fashioned Texas style drive-in burger joint. The patties are freshly ground and very thin. Order a double meat/double cheese and you won't be disappointed. They come with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and mustard in the best Texas tradition. Fries may not be to everyone's taste. They are hand-cut and slightly soft. Not soggy, but softer than the crispy ones you get at most joints. I prefer Larry's as they remind me of the fries my mom used to make. Onion rings are ok. They may have been frozen, but remeind me of Whataburger rings. We had two double burgers, an order of rings, and an order of fries, excluding drink, for less than $10. read more

I have eaten at Larry's for 40 years. I started as a child when my dad was stationed in Abilene and continued as we moved over sections of the USA and Europe. In college I would drive every semester from Austin to Denver and eat along the way I have traveled extensively and even eaten at places that have been praised by A list movie stars. Crispy corn chips with nacho cheese, chili, lettuce, tomato and onion and of course I always get jalepenos with mine, they give them to you on the side. Homemade greasy burger and handcut fries. $5.75 for a cheeseburger basket and jumbo drink. You can't beat that. Service is friendly and quick. Fries are handcut and delicious. Cheeseburgers are tasty and fresh. However, my ONLY complaint and reason for four stars and not five, is that their hamburger patties are pretty thin. This is a place that looks like it is no longer in operation when driving by from the street. These are usually the best places to get food because their focus is obviously on what matters...food and service! Their hours of operation are a bit more friendly than their competitor up the street. They are open from 10am to 9pm Monday through Friday. They are closed on Saturday and Sunday...which is a bummer. But at least they are open in the evenings during the week. However, they do NOT accept debit/credit cards so you better have old fashioned cash or checks when visiting this old fashioned type business. But the food is worth it! It works like Sonic, but you actually have to get out of your car and go up to the window to order your food. Then go back to your car and wait. But you have to listen for them to call your number because their loud speaker system is the dude sticking his head out the ordering window and yelling your number. It's pretty cool though when you get to drive away with the awesome smelling food in your car. read more

I'm thinking some of the other reviews are spam seeing how they refer to finding a table to sit at because there are no seating options at Larry's which is just fine with me because as long as you get your food, you're golden. This place reminds me of my childhood. It was always a treat to come to Larry's. Their burgers are awesome, chicken strips even better and the malts are divine. They also have the best tasting Dr Pepper in Texas! Larry's isn't in the most quaint area of Abilene buy don't hesitate, I've never heard anything about anything ever happening - even when "The Juicy Pig" was open and the crackheads were known to roam the area (if you're an Abilenian 30+ years old and up you know exactly what I speak of) Larry still runs and works at this location and has the original letter menu from at least the 70's. Larrys hold the three criteria I believe is the epitome of a great burger joint. It's cheap, their portions are big and it's greasy (in a good way). The place is opened at weird hours though, so when u see it open- Go! Another thing is that it is like an ol' school drive in burger place. I feel like I'm a high school teen back in the sixities when my bf and I order at the window and eat our burgers in our car. Guys-- good date tip btw!! Heard so much about this place and finally decided to try it myself. Boy was I not disappointed one bit. My burger was delicious and my son loved his grilled cheese. We also ordered two orders of tots and learned our lesson to get one order next time because they give you a lot for your money which is great. We also had two milkshakes that were great as well. We will definitely be back soon to try some more of what they have to offer. Great food for far less than any chain burger joint in town.
