A bunch of friends and I did outdoor dining here after a special church service a couple months back. We were served complimentary chips and salsa, which is always a plus, so I thought we were off to a good start. It went downhill from there. For my drink, I got the Horchata, which was just okay. It seemed premixed and a little watered down. I really wanted some type of seafood, but the restaurant was out of shrimp and didn't even have fish on the menu. My next choice was the Fried Pork Chop lunch special, which comes with rice. After 10 minutes, the waitress returned and reported they were also out of Pork Chop. So all this time I thought my order was being cooked and taken care of, then found out I had to yet again to pick something else. After quick consideration (by this time most of my friends were almost finished eating), I finally went with enchiladas with fried pork filling and sauce on the side, because both green and red sauces were spicy. This came with rice and salad. The fried pork was pretty good... slightly crispy, succulent, juicy well seasoned. The outer tortilla shell was quite bland and I would've liked some sort of sauce on it. The rice was decent. What made things more difficult was that though our waitress seemed nice, she didn't speak English. Thankfully, one of my friends was able to translate. However, what if nobody at the table spoke Spanish? Overall, I was not that happy with the food (and the many items not available) or service. My friends' plate of tostadas looked better and I should have went with that. I feel like I wasted my money on something I didn't actually want because I was forced to change my order so many times. Nice place, good service. Had chicken with tomato, peppers and onions and fried cheese, tres leches cake, tamarind drink. Did not like the rice and beans that came on the side, the rice was hard and the beans tasteless. The chicken breast was very good but the cook forgot the tomatoes, peppers and onions and had to ask for them on the side. I liked the cheese but how do you ruin cheese. I've been living in this neighborhood pretty much all my life and I finally gave this restaurant a chance since I always pass it. I went ordered here 4x in one month twice over the phone and twice in person, the food isn't bad cant complain too much. But one thing is that they're inconsistent and have poor service. There was one time my huarache was down sized for the first time, which was charged as a Large Huarache until I complained. There was one lady I continued to get service from and she did not look friendly as well as a few of the other women. Each time I called, the lady gave my bf and I attitude, sucking her teeth and rushing us for our card number. The last time was the last straw for me when we ordered food and drinks, we went to pick it up and my bf realized the drinks were left at the restaurant. We kindly asked over the phone if we can get it delivered since we're 4 blocks away and it was a cold evening, we were denied, no inquired on how far we were it was a definite NO. Which I was confused since they promote FREE delivery. Very disappointed in this restaurant, I love Mexican food and their culture but they left me with a bad taste. As a customer I am not only interested in the food but I highly value ambiance and customer service which is high on my list. Ordered the bistec encebollado. Rice was the kind you find at the bottom of the pot, very hard and crunchy. Beans were good but portion was small. Salad and small bit of avocado was stale. The steak didnt really have much taste to it. All in all the meal was pretty mediocre. Not to mention it took almost 25 minutes for my food to be served. Great food, to be blunt. I'll elaborate, though. After a visit to the Bontanical Gardens, we craved a bit of Mexican after the lackluster "South of the Border" experiences as of late. When you dig far enough, you sometimes find a gem. We did this time, that's for sure. While the ambiance was clearly lacking any warmth or coziness, that's not why we were there. We were friggin' hungry! So, let's get to the food: They were accommodating in making our order vegetarian, which was appreciated. First, the flautas. Served with rice, three flour tortilla rolls stuffed with back beans and a mild cheese, and black beans on the side. The crispy, flaky tubes were topped with lettuce, chopped tomato, and a bit of crumbled Chihuahua cheese. Served hot and having a super crunch, these were more than enough to satisfy my partner, and he can be a tough nut. I had the gorditas. Obviously made moments before sending it out to our table, they were like arepas...only crispy kinda like a fried knish. I can't describe it otherwise except it was golden in color, perfectly fried, steaming hot, and stuffed to the max with black beans, cojita cheese, lettuce, tomato, and cilantro...drizzled (as if it needed it) with sour cream. I can't say enough that these were some of the best items I've ever eaten in a Mexican themed restaurant/cart/whatever. Filling and perfect, three were served in an order. If you go, and in urge you to do so, ask for the red and green hot sauce. The red one is spicy, but not over the top, while the green sauce is mild. Either one was a great compliment to the great, home-style cooking. I'm not done with the food yet, though, as I'm leaving the best for last. What is it? The guacamole. In all of my years of working in the food business, eating out, and considering the amount of guacamole I've ingested...trust me when I tell you that this was the best I've ever had. Yes, ever. Creamy, perfectly seasoned, chunky, with just the right amount of cilantro and lime...it was very rich and screamed "FRESH". Guac-heads, please take note. It wasn't made at our table, wasn't called something different, not made with organic this or that...it was simply fantastic. If you don't go for anything else, go for a plate of this green goodness. Service was polite and thorough. Prices were inexpensive. Atmosphere is utterly abysmal...but again, we weren't here for that. Well, ordered some tacos and a chimichanga. Ate a taco and saved the rest for the next day. I cut in the chimichanga with a knife to half it and my knife hit some metal. Of course, I didn't want to believe it but I pulled out a metal probe. (See pic) When I called of course the owner does not speak English. Geez. The manager had little authority so their customer service is not on point although we received an apology. Had to move heaven and earth to receive a full refund from GrubHub. The food we did taste was good but we will never order from here again. They must have kids working in the kitchen or very careless adults. Only come here if you have ALL the time in the world. I was not in a hurry when we arrived, but 45 minutes is a long time for a small plate of fajitas. I asked if it would be enough for two - and was told yes with rice & beans. Me and my friend discover this gem place on our way back to the 4 subway line from the New York Botanical Garden. Las Maravillas is a great Mexican restaurant with authentic traditional food. The menu list all you can imagine and more, including Mexican tacos vs American tacos! I tried the first one and my friend got a plate with rice beans and chicken in a spicy sweet and savory sauce, really typical. My tacos were so full of pork, cilantro, and onions that i wasn't able to close them, and the tortillas were so fresh.. Wow. We ended up coming home with a large doggy bag because it was a ton of food, but so delicious! I highly recommended in case you are hungry before or after the garden. At first sight, the food presentation was very enticing, the flavor was so savory that after that first visit, I ordered the chicken Flautas consecutively the following days after. My visit today however, was not appealing as the other times I ordered my chicken Flautas. I got shorted with 1 Flauta out of 5 and a toothpick was also on my plate. This was such a wonderful gem to find! I work nearby at Lehman College and decided to step inside since, of course, I love Mexican food. This place has THE best quesadillas I've ever had. Made to order, everything is fresh. I opted for a vegetarian quesadilla, made with sauteed mushrooms, jalapenos, cheese, crema, and a side of (optional) rice and beans. I skipped the rice and swapped it for some salad, but it's all about the quesadillas. They are made with corn, not flour, tortillas. If you go and aren't so keen on quesadillas, I still however recommend you give their side sauces (red and green, respectively) a chance (if you like spicy). Ordered take out it was dropped off at the front desk of building. I called an hr later asking for my food ready to cancel and they said "we left it downstairs". Clearly my food was cold since it was in the lobby for who knows how long. The delivery person enters as I grab my bad saying "the lady upstairs is mad" and I just look at him and get on the elevator. The food here is horrible. We ordered veggie burritos and they were filled with lettuce and rice and beans. The server told us the burrito would have mushrooms and peppers. No veggies, no flavor. Decided not to come back after my first visit here, but recently was craving Mexican food so since this restaurant is the closest one next to my home I had no choice. Thought my experience would be better but instead it was worse. Waiter was not as attentive as she could've been, food was highly over prized and did not leave me to expectations. I ordered a cemita de res(with everything) but literally just got a small slice of meat, that did not even fill up the bun, and on top of that the "everything" part was a joke, had smaller portions of the ingredients than what I would pay. To top it all off for the ending , I asked for a cup of water, the first sip I took, literally tasted like minerals. Disgusting. NEVER EVER coming back here. I have given them 1 star only for delivery. I had ordered 5 Pieces Verses Enchilada and their menu says that it served with rice, beans, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado and radish. What I got was 5 very soggy Enchiladas in a very watery sauce roped with wilted lettuce, a few pieces of chopped tomatoes with a little cheese. 4 years ago this restaurant would have gotten 5 stars from me. They are the reason why I'm borderline obsessed with Mexican food! I've been coming here since the first week they opened about 10 to 11 years ago. You will literally crave their tacos in your sleep!!!... or at least you would have. I used to come to this restaurant on a weekly basis for yearsssss. I am proud to witness their growth and during their pike years I've referred countless customers who fell in love with their food as I did 11 years ago. However, the increase in customers have diminished the quality of their food preparation. I'm disappointed that their food isn't what it used to be. I have hope that they will get back to where they were. At this point it's been a hit or miss but lately it been more of a miss. This place is not fancy. It is not always the cleanest, and sometimes the customer service is questionable. But generally the tacos are delicious. The prices went up recently, but 8.50 for 3 tacos is not bad. What seems less reasonable is the extra four dollars required if you want al pastor or lengua. And you used to be able to mix flavors but no longer. They have gotten fairly stingy when chips and salsa, but it is still pretty tasty. read more
