I used to like this place, but it has gone down. I went for a Taco Tuesday. There was very little filling in the tacos. They now also use mozzarella cheese for their cheese on the tacos. I love finding new Mexican restaurants to frequent! This one happens to be close to my mom's house and I'm staying up here with her for a little while because she's having some health issues (please don't smoke, I'm telling you!). The staff is very friendly and efficient! They work hard to make sure everyone dining in, grabbing takeout, and using 3rd party delivery services are happy with their food and the timeliness. They also have some great specials! They have Margarita Mondays, as well as Taco Tuesdays (99¢ tacos!). On Tuesdays they also have piña coladas on special! While waiting on my takeaway order, I sat at the bar and had a piña colada. I watched her make it for me. They do not use some cheap piña colada mix. Nope! They literally blend up coconut juice, slices of fresh pineapple, and tequila, and then garnish with an additional fresh pineapple slice. Sooooo yummy! Tried Las Penas for the first time today after getting a deal where where got two $25 gift certificates ($50 total) for only $25. My wife and I both ordered 22 oz. draft beers (they called them "medium") and 12 inch Chori burritos. The beer came out in ice cold mugs with little foam. We were also given complimentary warm chips and salsa while we waited for our meal. The burritos came out very hot and fresh, with a variety of flavors that played well off each other. The rice was cooked just right, and the steak and chicken were tender and juicy, without being chewy. The small crumbles of chorizo really put this dish over the top, as did the hot white queso poured over the top. The "salad" of lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, and diced onions and tomatoes added a coolness to the heat (not spice) of the burrito. The best part was, we both had leftovers to take home for dinner later. Overall, the ambiance is about what you'd expect of a Mexican restaurant, meaning pretty casual. They had 2 big screen TVs, and both booth and table seating was available. Even if we didn't still have another $25 gift certificate to use, we would definitely still return to Las Penas read more

This little Mexican restaurant is somewhere to go for variety. The menu is a little overwhelming for me with how many items they had. But, it's good to have options. We did take out, so I can't speak for what the restaurant looks like inside. My husband had a seafood dish, which he couldn't tell me exactly what it was. It came with a broth and then seafood in whole (like a full shrimp, including head and shell). He was not a fan of having to prep all the seafood, but he said the dish tasted good. My son got chicken fajitas. They were cooked well, and included a lot of stuff to put on them....but not tortilla shells. I had gotten the Speedy Gonzalez combo which was a chicken taco and a chicken enchilada. The taco was very basic but good, the enchilada the same. I wish there had been just a bit more of the sauce over it, but it was tasty. We have many more items to try here, so we will come back again. The prices are also really good as well. read more

This restaurant is A-OK for me! I ordered the shrimp fajitas which came screamin' hot! Service was lightning fast too. My tortillas were hard and brittle on one side; perhaps they were left on the warmer too long? The salsa and guac were delicious. The guac was nice and chunky. The hubs ordered the taquitos which he said were good, but nothing to write home about. The menu was overwhelming. Too many choices...ahhh! Overall, this was a typical Ohio Mexican restaurant. Amazing food! I loved the food, we had the Mexican pizza and it was huge and delicious, the Huarache was to die for, and the specialty tacos that you dip in broth (can't remember the name) were delicious. Huge dishes! The margaritas were huge and I love my margaritas. After ordering one, I decided to get the handmade one, and boy do they really pack a punch, those won't disappoint either. In regard to the service, they were packed but our waitress, Veronica was attentive and speedy, the owner Pancho came to our table and was very welcoming, Francisco was our bartender and was very attentive as well. This is by far our favorite Mexican restaurant in town Their food is not your typical Mexican meal that comes out on a microwaved platter 5 minutes into your chips and salsa which by the way are fabulous. Hubs and I tried this place out after seeing some awesome posts on FB. We were not disappointed! The cheese dip (queso blanco) was creamy and delicious. Our waiter kept our drinks full and the chips were warm and crisp. While the salsa was flavorful, it was not melt-your-face hot. I tried the Fajitas Las Penas (for $1 more I got chicken & steak). These are not your average fajitas! The plate came out sizzling with a skewer of grilled shrimp resting on a pineapple top. The chicken and steak were mixed with onions, peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, cauliflower and broccoli. (The only down-side was a bit of gristle on the steak.) It was served with a plate of creamy re-fried beans, rice, guacamole salad and flour tortillas. Two meals for the price of one! Hubs got the Hawaiian Burrito - a ginormous flour tortilla (12") stuffed with chorizo, chicken, steak rice, beans and fresh pineapple and covered in queso blanco. It made his eyes go wide, and my man can eat! We were too full to try any desserts, but I have a feeling this won't be our last visit to Las Penas! read more

Really torn on this one. Really good food, so-so feel from the place. Let me elaborate. Went at kind of an off time- 2:30 on a Friday, but still didn't expect to be one of two tables there. The only other table got up after we ordered and I was a little underwhelmed at the cleaning of the table (in these corona days). And also, I tried to order a margarita with my late lunch... but they don't have their liquor license. That's a huge bummer. The server sat across the small restaurant from us with her mask pulled down, sitting on her laptop until our food came. Which.. whatever, I guess. We loved coming to Las Penas for years. Here lately everything we order seems old and not fresh. It's a shame because I constantly crave pupusas and this is the only place close to us that makes them. Today we ordered a torta de carne asada and they skimped us on avocado. When ordering enchiladas I was told that rice and beans was two dollars more. Not sure if many are familiar with rice and beans but you can buy a pouch of rice and beans and cook them to feed your entire family so the markup is pretty ridiculous. We will be checking out La Raza next time which is only about 3 minutes away. Their prices are lower and their market is pretty decent. Comparable to La Michoacana in Dayton. It seems like the more popular Las Penas gets, the less fresh everything is. I understand that, because the demand is high they probably cook lots of stuff early in advance though it's still unacceptable. read more
