Fantastic, high quality desserts! You can tell their food is close to 100% homemade and they put care into what they sell. The Oreo cheesecake was perfect (around $4.20). It was topped with a nice ganache and the cheesecake was light with a creamy texture. Their tiramisu square (around $3.60) also had fantastic texture and you barely had to chew it. A few bites had a strong taste of espresso which I loved. The blueberry muffin ($2.86) was pretty good nothing too crazy though. A classic, well baked muffin that won't disappoint. It's hard not to spend 20+ dollars here. My only gripe is it does really annoy me when these places do not visibly show their prices. This place makes awesome red wine biscuits. I literally couldn't stop eating them and ate a whole pack myself in one day! They are a must try! I was a little taken aback that, when told we just had some on a La Gondola ride, the woman working there questioned whether we were charged for them. While we weren't (at least not obviously...it couldn't have been built in the overall ride cost) does it really matter? The people surely bought them from Buonos so they were paid for, and the Buonos sticker on the package prompted us to go buy 3 more packs. That sounds like a win to me?! We ended up loving most of the things we bought at Buonos. We arrived, masked on a crazy busy day and while the staff was super nice, did not feel like we could really get a grip on what was what inside the cases. Cookies and pastries were obvious, but there was a WHOLE section of stuffed bread/calzones and it was really hard to figure out what to get. There were also different sizes of pizza with and without cheese. It was a good kind of confusing, but confusing none the less. We just ended up picking a bunch of things, grabbed our bag and headed out to the car. Once home, the Italian bread was excellent and the chicken parm calzone was a favorite. As more and more long time family owned Italian bakeries disappear, Buono's had become one of our staples, especially for holidays where quality and "the good stuff" were preferred over convenience. The bread, pastries and pies at Buono's were among the best I've had and held their own even with the fancy Yuppie Bakeries on the East Side and Federal Hill. This was all under a roof that brought me right back to my childhood in the tenements of Providence, a very authentic experience, one that is being lost. A few years back, we showed up at Buono's early Thanksgiving morning as we'd done for many years. Surprisingly, the usual long line around the block was not there. We bought pastry, bread and a pie. The pastry and pie were okay, but not as memorable as ones we'd had in the past. Most concerning though was the bread, which had a strong taste of bleach, like it had been prepared by the school lunch lady on a recently cleaned counter. We were disappointed, but chalked it up to an anomaly. On my next visit however, the same bleachy smell and taste remained. On talking to friends who also frequented Buono's we learned that the original owner had passed away. They too noticed the bleachy taste and drop in quality and had given up on Buono's. So we stopped going for a spell. Feeling bad, and hoping things had improved, I recently went back over the holidays. Happily, their bread improved, and no longer had the bleachy taste, and while it still seems to be not quite what it used to be, was a relief to get a decent loaf, Buono's bread has a strong crunchy crust, and a flavorful elastic crumb with lots of cells. It's not perfect, but much closer to the Buono's of old and well worth the trip. So we'll be bringing Buono's back into our routines it's a good loaf of bread and good pastry. read more

My boyfriend is originally from Providence and he has been trying to take me to Buono's for over a year now! We usually always strike out due to scheduling constraints or simply not being able to make it there before they close. I was able to experience Buono's for the first time and LOVED IT! In terms of the parking specifically for Buono's, that is one thing that does not exist. You have to park on the street, wherever you can find a spot. At first glance you feel like you are walking into an old world bakery. The window is displayed with mounds of fresh baked bread that looks just as good as it tastes! Upon walking in, I noticed the different cases of freshly baked pastries and savory goods that were located in separate areas. The general space to move around in the bakery is minimal and fills up quickly. The staff is fast moving, but very friendly. The lines moves quickly, so pay attention! I was really impressed with their prices and how reasonable they are. I walked out with a large bag of goodies at a small price. I have read a few of the reviews that other people have left and can tell you that I can understand where they are coming from (positive and negative). I like to be open-minded and optimistic with my food experiences. I only purchased and consumed savory items from their cases. The pastries I cannot attest to their taste, but they looked pretty darn delicious! I grabbed a bag of the ricotta cookies on my way out and could not have been any happier with my selection. The cookies were so moist, more like mini ricotta pound cakes with just the right sweetness and hint of lemon that shined through. I could not have just one, they were scrumptious! My boyfriend has raved about their pizza breads for years. I was finally able to understand what all the hype was about. Note - this review is about their bread. I have no idea about any of their other goods as I have only ever gotten bread here. Now, this is what Italian bread is supposed to be like! I'm Italian, and have been to Italy several times in my life. This is what bread is like over there. Buono's is the best you can get in Rhode Island, hands down. There are one or two bakeries in the North End of Boston that are almost as good, but for bread that surpasses Buono's, you actually have to go to New Jersey where there are some old-school Italian bakeries that have been around since the turn of the 20th century. Really, Buono's is superb. The crust is crunchy, hard, and relatively thick. Inside, the bread is dense and chewy - that is how real Italian bread is back in Italy, and this is the closest I've found in New England to what I used to have in New Jersey, and in Italy. read more

(it may seem out of the way, but if you're going from silver lake to chalkstone ave/mt. pleasant, just use pettey's ave as a cut-through. at the light where it intersects hartford, Buono's will be directly in front of you.) everything at Buono's is good - the pizza strips, the spinach pies, the coconut custard pies, etc. but this place is all about the BREAD. the crust is PERFECT - hard, crispy, a little blackened, and just a tiny bit chewy. inside the bread is soft, almost tender if you can imagine. buy a loaf UNSLICED (thats important), take it home & enjoy with some softened butter, some quality olive oil, or dip it in some homemade gravy. you will not believe how good it is! I have yet to find a place in the north end or little italy that even comes close. its absolutely the best italian bread this side of the atlantic - a hefty claim, but I stand by it! I am put on hold while she gets the Mgr. After holding for 5 mins., my # is taken, and I'm told to expect a call back. The call never arrives, so I call back Mon. morning. A rather brash woman gets on the phone, and says; "So ya need 5 dozen black and white cupcakes, and you have a problem with the price?" I sez; "No..I need 50-60 choc. and vanilla, and I never discussed price with anyone." she sez; "Why you want black and white, who's gonna eat a black cupcake?! I mean, REALLY, hehehh!" I sez; "Ok, so they're really choc. and vanilla..can you tell me what size they'd be?" she sez; "Not small, but not muffin sized." I sez; "How big are the smalls, er, are they mini sized? Bread & savory foods are ok, the pastry isn't. The strawberry shortcake wasn't even shortcake. It was a regular cake with cream & strawberries. I asked for & even pointed to the Danish that I wanted but when I got home it was a raspberry stick. Fine except that it was dry & waxy. This was the third & last time getting pastry there.
