Completely different experience with Robert than all the other mechanics in the U.S. that I have been dealing with. No ridiculous diagnostic charges, honest opinion and awesome recommendations on fixing the problem. Robert is always honest, knowledgeable and resourceful about what needs to be done. One of my favourite moments: I smashed the driver side window on a MB C230. After I got a replacement online, it turned out to have different wiring (that controls the motor that moves the mirror) despite looking identical. While I was on the phone with the supplier, who informed me that a part with the right wiring will cost $600 more, Robert had swapped out the wiring from the new part with my old part, and made the new mirror work beautifully; I'm positive most other mechanics would just have me get another part. read more

after my usual volvo-only mechanic quoted me upwards of $3k for work that was 'immediately necessary' (brakes, timing belt, air mass meter), i thought i was at a decision point for my car (a 94, showing its age). i called robert at laslo's auto repair for a quote, and when his quote was about half that original price i thought it was worth bringing the car in. robert is incredibly honest, and you can tell he loves working on cars. i explained to him all that was supposedly wrong with my car, and he said he would check it all over again. turns out the brakes did need replacing (but not the calipers as the volvo people said, which would have added several hundred dollars). the check engine light for the air mass meter was off since the volvo mechanic looked at it, and robert said it shouldn't be an issue unless the light came back on. the timing belt (the one the volvo mechanic was most insistent on) only had 50k miles on it - meaning there were 20-30k left - according to the sticker; when i pressured robert to see if the belt itself indicated more wear than is safe at this mileage, he assured me it was in fine shape for the miles it has on it already. all of this really means that the total cost of the $3k diagnosis from the volvo mechanic turned out to be only $415 of actually necessary work, which robert was happy to point out to me. incredible. he actually saved all the old parts and showed me everything new, and even showed me in the engine where he had taken things apart to look at the timing belt. not to mention, since i needed my car on a specific day and it took him longer than he thought to finish the car before, he stayed until 9pm to finish my car, and let me come pick it up then. incredible service, a very honest diagnosis, and a trustworthy mechanic. i'll never bring my car anywhere else. read more

Robert takes the time to explain what he did and will show you with great patience the old parts, what caused the problem etc. His shop is so clean it looks like an OR and furthers my opinion that Robert is more of a auto surgeon than a meer mechanic. Robert is possibly the nicest person, let alone mechanic, I have ever had the privilege of knowing. I took my Mercedes to him almost three years ago and I have never taken to anyone else since. I live 20 miles from this shop, yet I drive to Robert and leave the car for him to repair every time. Not only is he more than capable at taking care of everything my cars need he is also too cheap for what he does. Literally, I tell him every time he works on my car, "You don't charge enough for what you do." Whenever he works on my car it come back cleaner under the hood than when it went in. Best of the best. Robert is one of those very rare guys in the automotive repair business: the honest ones. He saved me a TON of money when I bought a used car by telling me exactly what to look for and what to stay away from. He inspected several cars for me at a reasonable price, showing me what was wrong and what was right with each one. When I decided on the right car, it needed some work so of course I went back to him. The work was done in the time it was promised, at the price promised. He gave me a list of other things the car needs, told me how important each was and when I should do them. I highly recommend taking your car here... GREAT place! Robert is an excellent mechanic, very passionate about cars, and a genuinely nice guy. Although he specializes in European cars (just for kicks, ask him what he thinks of GM cars), Robert has looked at my Chevy S-10 a number of times. My girlfriend has a 2002 SAAB that she has taken to Robert for all of her routine maintenance after having a very bad experience at the dealership. Robert has always treated her with respect and has always delivered quality work at a very good price. One time, I was taking my girlfriend's car to a SMOG test only station on Middlefield. The check engine light came on right before the appointment; the guy at the test station wouldn't even look at the car until the check engine light was addressed. I called Robert at roughly 4pm (when most mechanics are getting to wrap things up for the day) to see if he could take a look at it. Robert had me bring the car over right away and immediately began running a diagnostic on the car. Ten minutes later, he showed me that the error causing the light to trip was very minor. Because I was in a hurry to get back to the SMOG station, Robert even took the initiative to reset the check engine light so that the car could be tested! On top of that, he wouldn't charge me anything! read more

Quick update: Robert has done it again. Just had both cars (BMW and Mercedes) serviced by him again. He is so incredibly thorough, honest, and incredibly knowledgeable. Robert does not really need my review, he's an all star already. Still, I'd feel dissatisfied with myself if I kept this to myself. Robert fixed both my 323i (1999) and my son's 525i (1993). In both cases he did excellent work, What I want to stress are his honesty and generousness. In the case of my son's car he did the necessary repairs to get it running again, then gave us an estimate of the additional needed repairs, but suggested we'd be better off selling the car an buying a newer one. He did not charge us for his work (checking the car, flushing the radiator etc.). Guess who's going to be taking care of the new car. read more

I went here because of the yelp reviews. Note that I did not actually use Laslo's (yet) for repair, but did go in for an assessment. I was asked for $110 just to look at my car and figure out what's wrong. Once I explained that I just had a dealer service a few weeks ago, and only wanted him to check the codes (my check engine light was on), he went ahead and did that for me, for free. Once the codes were read, he allowed me to see them and told me what they meant (still for free). He gave me a seemingly reasonable quote for $800 to replace spark plugs, spark plug wires and valve gasket cover ($400 of that was for labor). However, he thought there was something wrong with my dashboard display when there is not, and was trying to quote me for work I didn't need there. It seemed like an honest mistake. (If you have a mercedes you'll know that when the wiper fluid is out or some other minor problem, it displays a message that takes over your dashboard display until you hit R to clear it.) I might follow through with service since he seems knowledgeable and reasonably priced. He was gruff with me at first but got more friendly as time went by. Other customers there seemed to really like him. Shop was clean and professional looking. update: I used Laslo's and from what I could tell, they saved me thousands of dollars. The tow driver told me he had seen the problem I was having (not the same problem described above), and he thought it would cost me $2k to $3k to fix. Laslo's got it fixed for $500. It's been about six months and my car is still running like a dream. Also, about a day after my repair my car wouldn't start. i called them up, of course suspicious that it was something they had done. The owner took the time to diagnose my problem, for free. I found out it was my key (which I had dropped). I tried my spare key and that's exactly what it was. Great shop, will definitely use again. read more

Robert is an amazing, honest mechanic! I use to bring my BMW to the dealer only (because it was still under warranty) but I learned you don't pay for what you get & the dealer charges 2-3x more for the same parts/labor. I was recommend to Robert by Roshan who took his BMW M3 to him. My first visit was about 3 months ago when my ABS, transmission & engine sensors all went on at the same time. The dealer quoted me at over three grand with three issues. Robert simply reset the codes and had the philosophy "don't fix it unless it's broken". He ended up fixing one of the three issues and my BMW is still running as great as ever. I recently brought my BMW back to him this week to check out a rattling noise & break jerk. He did a test drive and told me the number of things it could be (CATS, transmission fluid, etc). He put my car on the lift only to discover nothing was wrong with my car. He took the time to diagnose it for FREE and explain to me the computer breaking system of newer BMW's. He also answered all my questions regarding future maintenance and quoted me on things I will need in the upcoming year (i.e. breaks, oil change, etc). I will definitely be back. My car stalled on the freeway and I was towed to Laslo's late in the evening. Robert had already locked up when I arrived and was getting into his car to go home. he asked me if I had a problem and I told him that my car, a 2000 S430, was turning off while driving. He instantly knew what the problem was, a faulty crankshaft sensor, and did everything he could to show me exactly what was causing the problem. He told me that he would have the car ready in the afternoon on the next day. Then he took me to the train station, as it was too late to rent a car, and even offered me money for the ticket to get back to San Francisco. The next day my car was fixed and the price was way less than I expected. Robert was great and whatever service my car needs, he is going to be the guy to work on it. I had an auto need just like everyone else, so of course, I went to Yelp to identify a trustworthy European auto mechanic. I noticed the great reviews related to Laslos Auto, so I gave 'em a call. Robert answered the phone, and I described the problem with my SL500 - he immediately knew the issue (i.e. without even seeing the car) I brought the car in to the shop and sure enough, he was correct. Additionally, I knew my vehicle now required a 50,000 mile servicing and he spent time talking me out of it (?) .. I've never had a mechanic talking me out of work before. He suggested I wait for another 6 months and I did. Robert's actions built a ton of personal equity with me - seriously. I've lived in the south Bay Area all my life, and it's pretty cool to see an automobile mechanic who is trustworthy, honest, and takes his time to communicate on specific issues without rushing the customer. I brought my Volvo here for years and not only is Robert an excellent mechanic, he's honest. Finding a mechanic like that is kind of like discovering plutonium. I've had such a positive experience with Laslo's that I was reluctant to buy a non-European car to replace my Volvo.....in other words, I wanted to buy a car for my mechanic rather than find a mechanic for my car!!!! It really doesn't get any better than this. The only problem is that Robert often works by himself because he has very high and exacting standards so you might have to be patient waiting for your car to be done. Well, here's yet one more GREAT review of Laslo's!!! I drive a 2003 Mercedes Benz C240 and my home state is Mississippi but I was in dire need of a "service A" for my car while on assignment in California! I I asked around, checked online and whadayaknow.....i found this shop, called and made an appointment. The owner, Robert, was really knowledgeable about Mercedes and informed me of "needed" repairs, even going so far as to say, "You don't need this today, but in 5000 miles, you should address it." OMG!!! I could not believe it! He did my service A, changed bulbs that were blown out and rotated my tires...what did he charge me for? "Service A" only! He was fantastic, gave me an itemized list (on my receipt) of all he had done and what was needed! Get this...i don't live here, but i'm gonna stay at least 5000 more miles to get the things taken care of that he suggested! My car has 156000 miles and i plan to drive it until...... Brought my car there after I was quoted on the phone $500 or less for brake and new rotors on my BMW. After dropping it off, he said it was $900. I said no thanks. It was a hassle to have to get rides to drop off and to pick up the car.
