After scouring the Latham/Troy area for nearly 1 hour for a place to eat at 1AM in the morning (a trip which reminds how impossibly dead the Troy area is), I finally settle in a very comfortable and familiar setting known as the 76 Diner. It constantly reminds you of sanctuary, a building filled with warmth and life, despite how barren and cold Troy can be. You can't help and wonder how inviting this place can be. Yes their food is a little expensive, but I can't help but put my hand on the fact that this is the only place that is open in the middle of night providing great service and good food that other diners struggle to do even in the afternoon. I am so disappointed with the food and service at the 76 Diner. This used to be a great place, but the decline is unbelievable. My husband ordered fried eggs, hashbrowns, cornedbeef hash and toast. First he was served eggs and hashbrowns and asked if there was anything else he needed. "Yes, the rest of the order and ketchup." 10 minutes later the rest of his food arrived. Of course the eggs and potatoes are stone cold by then. I ordered the pork chops with mashed potatoes, corn and chicken florentine soup. The soup was bland and barely warm, chops were overcooked and madhed potatoes were barely mashed. I asked twice for a basket of bread and finally received a basket of very stale bread. We went to the counter to pay and waited for the cashier to ask how everything was. She never did. My husband asked, "aren't you going to ask how our dinner was or you aren't because you don't want to know how bad it was?" Her reply, "no, she told me what happened." My husband said, so you know how bad it was and are still charging full price? Big clue, if you pull into a diner parking lot and there only a few cars, pull back out and go somewhere else. read more

This was a surprisingly excellent find! My wife and I were just traveling by in the NYS Thruway and found this Diner on our GPS. I had possibly the best diner burger deluxe I've ever had. It was huge, very tasty, excellent fries, onion rings, and pickle with coleslaw and bacon. First time ever that I couldn't finish a burger because it was so big. I didn't ask, but I'm guessing it was at least 12 oz. My wife had corned beef hash and eggs along with spinach and feta and that was also perfectly cooked and excellent. Reasonable prices, pleasant and competent servers. I recommend this place highly and will return any time I'm in the area. read more

Yes. Everything about this diner was a yes. My sisters and I were driving down from Montreal and stopped here for a late dinner. Our server was so thoughtful and an angel from heaven. She was attentive, quick, cheery and generous. The food was delicious. We got the French onion soup, a Ruben and a Greek salad all to share and it was more than plenty of food! This was the first time for a meaI. A few of my friends was with me. I order the turkey dinner and when it finally can out it was cold, gravy was congealed. Sent it back and same meal come right back out being microwave. Told waitress and she said how did I know because the way I tried it was the same way it came back. She brought it back to the kitchen and this time it came out on bread and not stuffing. Spoke with hostess and she brought out the right dinner after. They also added 18 percent to everyone's bill. Spoke to owner and he didn't care. We waited over and hour for our meals and better then half of us had cold or bad meal. Will never go back poor service and rude owner who don't care. read more

This is everything a diner should be. I was very impressed with the food. It is not gourmet it is a diner. I had a chicken sandwich that was very generous in portion two pieces of chicken on a roll. Never waited on. I was seated by the friendly hostess and waited for my waitress. The waitress never showed up after 15 minutes no one ever came by my table. It wasn't busy only about 10 tables being waited on and the wait staff was standing around talking to each other. So I just left. I guess they don't need to wait on all the customers. read more

So I've never written a review, and I don't normally plan to ever write another review, but this warrants some notice to people going here in the future. Everything was fine about this place, food was fine, service was fine, price was fine. But this awful thing happened mid-way through my meal. Fault is on me for not saying anything at the time, but I was so disgusted, shocked, and confused/embarrassed that I acted like everything was fine and paid and left. I was drinking my coffee when there was clearly something in it that wasn't supposed to be, and was a bodily fluid that was not my own. I don't know what it was because I spit it out into a napkin and closed it, and did not look at it because I didn't want to know, but it was the single most disgusting thing that has ever happened to me. I stopped eating and immediately left. I'm just writing this review because I was afraid that this could happen to other people. Or that the person who did this would continue to do it and get away with it. This experience would have been fine, a normal breakfast out, if this hadn't happened. Tried breakfast here. For a huge diner the breakfast choices were very small. The eggs and toast were good. Homefries so so. Although the coffee tasted ok it was never hot! The server was attentive at first but had to wait a bit till I asked for a check. Not my go to place unless I am driving by. read more

Very disappointed. I've lived in this area all my life and have always been able to count on a good meal here. This morning, however was a disaster! We were seated right away by a lovely hostess, but itwas at least 15 minutes until our server even acknowledged us and another 5-10 minutes when she never asked, but just assumed that both of us wanted coffee.. then another few minutes until she brought a couple creamers for me along with our silverware. Another 10 minutes went by before she eventually took our order. In the meantime, she was literally running around the dining room with a pot of hot coffee in her hand. It didn't really seem very busy either. Once a full hour went by since we were seated, I finally asked her about our food, since the people who came in after us had already gotten their meal. She blamed it on the kitchen staff and the grill. My friend had ordered an egg sandwich and I had ordered an omelet....nothing fancy so I couldn't quite understand that. Then we finally got our food, which was not impressive to say the least. I think they should do a bit of omelette training class, it was so dry and overdone I didn't even eat it. She offered me hot sauce and I said yes, this took another 5 minutes for her to get. She blamed that on the busboy! Then she told me that she couldn't hear because she was wearing a mask! Another young woman was following her, I assume she was training her, so needless to say, I'm not planning on returning anytime soon. i understand that places are short staffed and it's a tough business to work in , but today was over the top!! yes, I did tip her20% but what a waist of $35.00! read more

Been going here more and more over the years. Bright, clean and with a personable Staff, I've only had a few bad meals here. If you stick to the basics and don't order anything too exotic (even if it's on the menu) you'll do just fine. Professional wait staff that neither hover nor ignore you. Managers./greeters who remember you and talk to you often. Great old school music and tons of tables. I've never had to wait except on big holidays and even then it's not long. Besides the plentiful, delicious and attractive food, the decor of this place is so sweet and charming. So many details like how well the colors are coordinated and the outside is impressive as well. As a local I've been to the '76 a few times. Food is pretty average, and my service experience is par or a little below. As a diner, the prices are reasonable; the selection is good. Most recently ordered their eggs Benedict with homemade hollandaise. Pretty good, with really nice poached eggs, but it tasted almost entirely unseasoned. With a little salt the breakfast was quite nice. A few weeks ago I ordered steak & eggs which was really underwhelming for the price. Very poor customer service beginning at the front door. If you like to use a diner as a place for breakfast groups to meet, enjoy food, and share memories this is NOT the place. If you arrive individually they make you wait for an undetermined period of time in their vestibule. We would have liked to sit at a table and enjoy a cup of coffee. They suggest calling for a reservation. When we did that, we were told they already had two reservations at the requested time, evidently a problem. Apparently they do not like to handle groups (we are 8). We meet monthly but will be looking for a more welcoming location in the future. read more

Met a friend for breakfast this a.m. Waitress took our order (2 eggs over light and 2 scrambled eggs)...which arrived literally within 60 seconds. When we expressed our surprise, she responded that the kitchen has many versions of "common orders" sitting on the counter. Upon returning to check on us, the waitress tried to make idle chitchat...and proceeded to pay me an insult of the highest order. When I called the manager, I received a tepid apology but not an ounce of compensation. If it's 3am and they're the only game in town, best of luck. this is THE diner (fark that Circle Diner shit that was up for a while). You go to Shaker? Come on in (you graduate to this place from Friendly's after say 8th grade). You go to church? It's here or Burger King. You like diner food? Come here because there's really no other diners in the immediate area. You like coming at 4am in the morning drunk and this place having all your old high school friends? Come here. You want steadily declining service since all the older waiters and waitresses left years ago? Come here. Tony still host here? Who knows. I know other people have the same sentiments; my friends used to come here with no minimum, drink coffee all night, smoke cigs, and discuss EVERYTHING, just like you picture it. We knew everyone by name. We'd chat. We'd break out change because we had no money. I'd attempt to drink water and spill it about 4 inches in front of my mouth because I was hammered. Me and Andrew J. have had tons of memories here, from Jordan taking back her tip, to Jordan being an idiot, to Jordan talking about idiots, to loud farts that got the whole row up in arms, to seeing the hottest girl in high school and quite frankly getting restless, to just bumping into people that you might never see again even though you knew each other in the past. For this area and Shaker in particular it's more than a diner. Its one of those places, and its not just one group of friends, its all kinds of kids. Andrew is right; this was a second home literally. We'd go out at 2am just to go to the diner. I'd pull all nighters finishing papers and work and then what, i'd go to the diner before school to at least get some breakfast in. My parents would go here if they needed to take someone to an All-American breakfast (their breakfast specials, if you come early enough, are really cheap). My dad even got the duck here; surprising that they have it, but that's neither here nor there. We caught this place at a good time, and have been able to see it change over the years. Ok in some departments. Good salads and Greek fare, but the breakfasts are nothing special. The service is always slow. Can't speak to every dish, but its hit and miss with what I've experienced in the five or six times I've gone. The all-night aspect is great though. I have been a loyal customer for years, but was very disappointed by the service today. Granted, Memorial Day. but the place was not terribly busy at noon, there were lots of empty tables and booths. Our group of 9 was seated quickly and comfortably but then the adventure began The server took a very long time before he came to take our orders, We had to track him down (even though silverware and water was brought right away). When I asked if they had ice cream and milkshakes, the server said yes, but did not offer us a desert menu ( it appeared much later, and only 2 copies were provided - for a group of 9). So as drink orders were taken, I said that I would like an ice cream soda but as dessert, after the meal, and would have water only with my meal. To my astonishment, the ice cream soda appeared on the table before any meal orders were even taken! I was not happy to see ice cream melt in front of me, while we all waited for the server to take our lunch orders, and then to deliver them. Somehow, once our lunches arrived, another member asked about desserts, and that is when it turned out (as I had known) that there were lots of dessert choices, and an actual dessert menu. This is a first class American diner experience! On first entry to the place, you'll notice its old fashioned diner decor perfectly preserved. The service is friendly in a folksy way--our server Doane was gracious, friendly, and welcoming.
