9-17-2020 decided to be a little more daring and try their squid luau. The color was lighter than what I remember from childhood time but the taste was the same. I found about 3 morsels of 1/4 inch sized squid On my plate. My mom would be such an adventurous eater and eat the raw crab, opinion, raw onions and that's how I first tasted it. My memory of this conservative, proper woman always had me in awe even before Korean and Thai food became popular in Hawaii. The chicken long rice had a few strands of chicken and was cooked slurpingly good. The Kalua pig was moist and flavorful. Once I finished off the Kalua pig I emptied my little container of lomi salmon next to my rice to sop up the liquid since I was enjoying it with chopsticks instead of the provided plastic fork and spoon. The haupia was enough to tickle my throat with one swallow but perhaps if it was colder or square shaped I maybe would have appreciated it more. This was the only thing I'd pass on next time. All in all a good lunch choice, generous portion to induce an afternoon siesta into snoozeville. read more

It has been a long time since I came to Laverne's. Their plate lunch is still excellent and the price is quite reasonable compared to other places. Not many places serve Pastele Stew so I had to get that. It was very delicious. It had a little kick to it and the plate lunch was very filling. This was just a mini. I had forgotten to bring a lunch and my coworkers were doing a malasada run, so I made a quick call in to Laverne's. I'm so glad that they allowed me to pay over the phone so that all my coworkers had to do was pick it up. I ordered the chicken long rice plate. It comes with 2 scoops rice and mac or tossed salad. It had more rice than what I expected. I forgot to tell them I wanted tossed salad. The chicken long rice was good, I had more long rice than chicken but it was still good. The guy at the window said the food is what you would get from a luau. He also recommended the number 5 which had the pulled pork and the laulau pork that's wrapped in a leaf. I was hesitant to try because I've always been told luau food isn't that good but it was good! I was pleasantly surprised. It's served with salsa and a white sweet dip. Whenever my dad and I take the dog for a well-needed bath at Petco, I'm always drawn to the mouth-watering aromas wafting from the designated food truck area at Waikele. I have already tried many of these places such as Taste Tea, Dick's Lechon, and Leonard's. I finally got around to trying Laverne's recently because I was craving some Hawaiian food. The lau lau and chicken long rice combo plate came with white rice, lomi salmon, and haupia pudding. Was the portion enough for me? Definitely. But was it *worth* nearly $20? Unsure. Usually when you get an expensive plate lunch, it is packed full with all the sides overflowing like at Tasty Korean BBQ or Gulik Delicatessen. Compared to huge plate lunches at other local places, Laverne's seems rather conservative when it comes to portion size. The flavor of the lau lau was great. However, it was a bit dry and lacked any and all pockets of tender, fatty meat - the best part about lau lau! The chicken long rice and other sides were pretty standard - nothing too special. Thus, my experience at Laverne's was rather average. It's a good option if you are craving Hawaiian food and stuck in Waikele. However, if you have a method of transportation to get around the island, there are better options out there. read more

My daughter raves about Laverne's Mahi Mahi garlic butter sauce with capers so I decided to try it out and added smoke meat (combination plate) and my husband got his laulau. Okay, i don't know but it just didn't sit well on my taste buds but n my combo plate. My husbands laulau definitely is from Costco or Sam club but that's just my opinion. I've been on a squid luau binge lol and I realized I never tried Laverne's yet. Luckily, they were in bite squad so I ordered for lunch :) I got the mahi (with garlic caper sauce), and squid luau combo. Food was here in less than an hour, and when I opened my container, I couldn't wait to dig in. SQUID LUAU: at first I was a little skeptical because it looked more creamy than other places , but I was pleasantly surprised that it had just the right sweetness and there were big chunks of squid :) definitely adding this place to my go-to list for squid luau MAHI WITH GARLIC CAPER SAUCE: the mahi was good and I enjoyed how they poured the sauce over the rice. But the sauce---not your usual eye-watering vinegar and garlic marinade here. A much subtler, seemingly Westernized sauce thickened into an ankake-like gravy. Different. OK. But "adobo"? Vegetables cooked perfectly and not over done. Their squid luau is always on point and a must have. This is the second time I've ordered the Mahi. I've had it when it's fresh at a catered wedding and it is soo friggen bomb. Sadly this will be the last time I order it at the lunch wagon. The first time I ordered it, it was over cooked. This time it was over cooked but had a chemical taste. The bummer part was the rice was cooked well but it was smothered with the chemical butter sauce. Came at 6:00pm and they were already out of a couple menu items so best you come early. Kalua pig was salty but I like it that way!! Salty and juicy. Chicken long rice had a strong ginger taste which I personally enjoy. The only thing that was kinda weird was the Haupia but that's minor. Cashier wasn't very friendly. So I was like "mmmkayy" . Anyways paid for my catering amount and went home. We tried it & loved it! So glad we did cuz i would've been bummed paying almost $7xx for dishes that wasn't good for our guest (1st timer here). Day of party everyone had squid luau, chicken long rice along with there baked chicken & it was a hit! Repeatedly asking where did I buy from so I told them. Anyways, the only bum out part was I was willing to spend more than to have it delivered, but unfortunately they didn't have a scheduled driver for "that day".
