Not sure if it's attributable to the foot traffic they get at this location. The fish didn't taste as fresh and the crunchy bits in the crunchy super white tuna roll tasted like reused oil. Spent the afternoon looking forward to a beautiful night for quality, affordable sushi in the city only to see my hopes being dashed in real time as I battled my way back through multiple traffic jams in the suburbs. I had a desperate thought that it had been a little while since I last visited and maybe they had changed their hours to be open later so I checked the website and imagine my surprise when I saw that Lawrence Fish Market now has two locations and the newer Chinatown one was not only going to be open for an hour longer but also allowed online ordering and credit card payments to boot! I could place my order and be in Chinatown by 8:40pm. The night seemed to be saved but I avoided getting my hopes too high as I know that different locations can sometimes be not as good. It was clear that was not the case when I walked into the storefront off 31st Street to see that they had not only seemingly transferred all of the good aspects of their flagship down South but also improved a little by adding a decent dining area that would be perfect for hanging out with a couple of friends while enjoying some A+ sashimi or maki rolls. I had placed my order ahead on the website and everything was ready to go when I walked in. I was so excited to hear they were opening a closer location. The opening date got pushed back but no biggie, it will be worth the wait. I finally got a chance to order my usual for takeout. The original Lawrence's is a Chicago icon known for its quality, taste and price. It even mentions on their site bringing affordable sushi at a competitive price. While the Chinatown menu is still competively priced, I just can't get over how prices are about 20% more than the original location. I've been dragging my feet going there and caved today because the sushi craving was too much to fight. It tastes pretty much the same quality wise. The two knocked off stars are for the pricing. Lawrence's is practically a Chicago icon. I obviously don't have access to their financials but the original location remodeled and expanded. When they were closed for remodeling, they were able to set up a temporary location. They opened a second location with an expanded menu and dine in. They've been around for the longest time and obviously have the capital. Which is why I am so dissappointed with the increased pricing for this location. What annoyed me most is the extra charge for masago for the california roll. They've never done this and still don't for the original location. Another dissappointing money grab. To add insult to injury, the rolls barely had any or no masago. I think I might just stick to the original location when it's convenient. We were excited to hear they'll be opening a patio (not sure if this is new or a seasonal thing) + bar next month!
