YAY! I found some real treasures here! On account of my wicked bad pms, I decided today was a good day to forgo my usual dinner and have a pastry feast instead. My inner 5 yr old rejoiced. So I zoomed over to this bakery and the woman behind the counter was very nice and and helpful. My feast consisted of... 1 Slice Devils Food Cake- Pretty good as far as cakes go. Im not a big cake person but my PMS was telling me to eat 2 Macarons (rose and hazelnut)- I thought I hated macarons and I really did not understand all the fuss about them. I'd only had them at Pascal's but being that he is French as hell, I figured the man ought to know his way around a macaron. So if I didn't like his, then they just weren't for me. But they had so many nice flavors here and they looked beautiful so I decided to give them a go and man am I glad I did! I dont like pure sugar (I usually hate candy, lifesavers, etc) and thats what Pascal's was to me. I like my dessert items to be lightly sweet, with high quality ingredients like real butter and cream. I always need fat to balance out the sugar. I took one bite and my eyes lit up when I realized it wasnt sickeningly sweet and the texture was crunchy and chewy and creamy and just plain magic. If I know my taste buds, u can bet your sweet ass that theres a healthy dose of butter in the filling. I wish the rose flavor was a lil stronger so I paired it with a nice cup of Numi Rose White Tea. I loved that the hazelnut had real nuts on the outside. Both were delicious and I was very mad that I didnt buy more, so I actually drove there to buy more right after I finished them. Im ridiculous, I know. UPDATE- The hazelnut no longer have the real hazelnuts on the outside and they are still good, but not as good as before. The only ones I don't like seem to be the fruity ones. The coffee tastes a lot like a jamocha shake from Arby's. I've since had the macarons from Bouchon and those are my fave, but these are still good. Coconut Chiffon Cupcake - this was bad ass, the custard inside was delish! I was hesitant to try it because I hated the yucky artificial tasting custard in the Boston cream pie cupcake at Crumbs. This was a seriously quality cupcake. Whoopie Pie - Sorry, but it was gross, the marshmallow filling had turned kind of clearish and rubbery, so I'm guessing it wasn't so fresh. I've also had the turkey cranberry panini here, it was delicious but it did give me a tummy ache. read more

My sister bribed me with a free cupcake if I drove her here. This is the first time I have been to this establishment. We bought 2 of the red velvet cupcakes. The frosting on the top was okay, it tasted more buttery than cream cheesy. The cake to me was a bit on the dry side, also a little bit tasteless, sorta just like eating baked red flour :3... And at $2.75 a pop it definitely wasn't worth it to me. Iono but I think cupcake from a box w/ already made frosting is more tasty. read more

Best Macarons every! I've been to many places to get good macaron's but this place takes the cake! They have lots of diff flavors, the only downside is the price. They are pretty expensive. But well worth it once you get to taste the crispy outside with the chewy inside of a very well done macaron. read more

Breakfast with Red Velvet Cake! Cute place that offers breakfast, lunch, maybe dinner, some bakery goods, coffee,and sweet desserts. We ordered: breakfast sandwich, breakfast combo, croissant, and 1 red velvet cupcake. The breakfast combo came with 2 eggs, hash browns, fresh fruit and toast. Good breakfast, nothing extraodinary, but good. Now my favorite part. I don't have a sweet tooth. I'm more of someone who enjoys looking at pretty things. Their showcase of their desserts looked so fresh and so good! They have a good assortment of different cupcakes to coconut cream to strawberry cupcake. They also had cakes and full array of flavors of macaroons. I wanted to try at least one dessert even at 10 in the morning. I choose the red velvet cupcake. The cupcake was moist, though I thought I tasted a bit of uncooked batter? The frosting was great! It was sweet enough but not too sweet. My sister bought my graduation cake from here and it was not very good at all. It was too sweet for my taste, it was dry, not very flavorful, and the flavor which was supposed to be berries was extremely boring and bad. Probably worst cake I've ever had. My suggestion would be to change something in your recipe. read more

Awesome breakfast and well-made cakes. I have ordered multiple cakes for various occasions throughout the year and every time I've been very pleased and guests have always raved about the cake. I recently went in to try their breakfast and or omelets were really good and the brioche French toast was amazing! -very fresh ingredients. I highly recommend this bakery. read more

Not Impressed. I have heard great things about this bakery from friends and fellow yelpers, but I was sorely dissapointed. Granted I am a baker myself, so I may be more critical than most, however, I saw much cake go to waste. I brought the cake to work for a friends Bday, as I was to tired the night before to whip up my own concoction. Sadly, the majority of everyones slice ended up in the trash. I got the lemon buttermilk cake, and the frosting tasted like paste. It was gummy and no flavor at all. The decorations were beautiful, but the flavor was lacking. The lemon creme/curd inside was overpowering and the buttermilk cake layers were a crumbly mess. And at $26 for an 8" cake, I was disappointed. Cakes were a disappointment. Yes, they were generous-sized slices, but other than that it taste like supermarket quality. Got a slice of the mango and red velvet at abt $4/slice. I went with my bff here to get some sweets. The red velvet cupcake is so delicious; its nice and soft. The cream cheese on top of the cupcake made it take so good. For the macarons, I got them in mango and strawberry. The mango flavor one was a bit sweeter than the strawberry one but overall yummy. Definitely I would come back here again. read more

Everyone seemed to rave about the red velvet cake & how it was amazing. I was in the Irvine area and decided to try this place out. It's located in a small little plaza, on the corner. When I first walked in, there weren't much people. Just a couple of friends having a little dessert while chatting. My friend ordered the tres leches cake and I ordered the red velvet. I think we would have been better ordering macaroons since everyone said how amazing those were. The red velvet didn't stand out like I had hoped. There was nothing really amazing to me. It was really dry and just tasted like a plain vanilla cake that had red food coloring. I'm not sure if I came on a bad day or if this is what it usually tastes like? read more

The cupcakes were great. The service was terrible. I called 45 min earlier to order cupcakes and asked to have them ready for pick up. I live 1 mile away but stopped going here. A few of the assistants behind the counter have really long bangs that just fall in their faces and their hair is never tied or pinned back to prevent hair from falling in the food. Since the average woman loses between 50 and 100 strands per day, it just makes me sick thinking about it. read more

I came here for an early breakfast and coffee. Service was not great or just nonexistent. They bring you your food and disappear. They don't ask if there is anything else you need or don't bring you any seasonings or sauces. I ordered the Denver Omelette which comes with a side of hash brown, fruit and toast. The food was very bland, it had no seasoning what so ever! On the bright side the food tasted fresh, just lacking in flavor. read more

Terrible service. I was not greeted upon walking in or leaving. Ordered a salad and 4 macaroons (because of their good reviews). The male cashier seemed really lost and confused and ended up overcharging me and then I was told I couldn't get a refund for a mistake on their end! I will say the coffee, pastries, and cakes here are delicious... probably 4 stars. It's the service that needs to improve. The girls behind the counter are unfriendly and do not smile. The owner is the most unfriendly face in the whole place. We were going there about 2-3 times a week for breakfast and the servers usually came by to ask if we wanted a refill for coffee. They never once charged us for these refills in the 2 years we've been going. Until the last time we were in there, my husband went up to the counter to ask if he could get a refill. The owner happened to be there and she snapped, "No! You have to pay for another cup of coffee!" We would have gladly paid if her attitude had been better but instead, we just left. She was rude, unfriendly, and lost 2 loyal customers over a $2 cup of joe. read more

Hands down excellent bakery!!!!! Extremely curteous staff!! these ladies went out of their way to accomodate me with a 9' cake, which I didn't make a reservation for in advance. I was looking for a bakery in the area and found Layer Cake...so glad i did, they saved the day and relieved me of the stress of having to find a cake for my event. I bought a Tres Leches and Red Velvet cake...and some cupcakes...ALL WERE SCRUMPTIOUS!! everyone at my party was raving on how delicious the cakes were. Worth every cent!!! Friend bought a red velvet birthday cake for us from this place. I must say it was delicious especially if you let the cake warm up to room temperature. I love the frosting on the cake better than the frosting on the sprinkles cupcakes. I would come back here to try other items! read more

I thought I had written a review, but I guess it was so forgettable that I didnt! Eww, so as an afficionado of all things cake and bakeries (self taught) lol, I am always up to trying new cake places. I work semi close to this location and as I went to Tapioca Express for a little hot wing action, I decided to stop in and take home a little box of goodies. FIRST, the bakers were not too friendly. I know that this lady was the baker because she even wore the little Chef Boyardee hat. She was helping this goofy couple who couldn't decide what the heck they were ordering. She didn't even acknowledge me !! Ok, then I ordered 2 slices of cake, a cup of cheesecake, a cup of red velvet and a maccaroon. The slices of cake were dry, the edges were sticky in a sitting out for a few weeks kinda way, and the frosting had a hard coat. The macaroon was hard, lemony ? and wasn't moist !! Never been to their brick and mortar store, but did get to try their pumpkin pie as takeout over Thanksgiving. Boy was it a hit. I recall having two slices, and my cousin who rarely eats sweets had three slices. I usually adorn my pumpkin pie with whipped cream as it can get dry, but theirs was so good alone that it wasn't necessary. Would love to check out their entire selection and try their macarons and chocolate items. read more

Layer Cake is a cute bakery with quite a variety of offerings, beautifully presented. They had several types of cookies, brownies, tarts, cupcakes, cakes, and different pastries. They even have coffee and tea drinks and spots you can sit and eat your goodies. You can buy many of their cakes by the slice. While Layer Cake isn't mind-blowing, (either that, or I was too full on this visit) it is definitely better than average without being snobby, or gourmet. My search for a great macaroon has ended at Layer Cake Bakery's door. The chocolate, pistachio and fresh from the oven coconut were great. Light and crispy shells with a slightly chewy middle. It leaves the cold hard ones at le Napoleon cafe in the dust. Yep they are expensive but makes a great special treat. If you need to feed your macaroon fix but are on a budget get the ones in the freezer at Trader Joes. Not in the same league as these little jewels but will do in a pinch. read more
