I don't know of any other place that makes Napoleons the way they are supposed to be made. I've been ordering them from the Irvine location for quite a long time and in the process, I have seen the price go up and the quality go down. It is a hit and miss when it comes to the taste and freshness of these pastries. Unfortunately, it is more of a miss. I keep saying it will be my last time, but I keep coming back to be even more disappointed than excited about my purchases. I'm not sure if these pastries have been sitting out a long time, but the freshness and quality of these Napoleons is a gamble. Irvine location, in Gelsons. Tried their famous Crocodile pastry, $21. Despite being early (7 am) to get first pick: Stale, not fresh. Definitely not baked today. Mushy texture, stale butter taste, and gummy pecan nuts: unappealing in every direction. Entenmann's would've been preferable. Also bought a 6 inch round coffee cake, $13. Topped with crumbs, rubbery, unattractive apple slices covered in fruit gel, and cake way overdosed with artificial tasting 'vanilla'. Overhyped, overpriced, and nothing European about it. If you are looking for a Princess cake (the Swedish cake with marzipan top) this is the only place that does it right in Orange County (as far as I know). It is fabulous. Not cheap - but worth it! Also their Boston Creme pie is to die for. Not super custardy -- more creamy. I've tried several bakeries in the county for special occasion cakes and nothing comes close. Most recently I purchased a mini Carrot cupcake for my sons to share. I paid $2.25. The cupcake was very dense and dry. It was a little hard as well, which makes me wonder how long it had actually been sitting in the pastry case. The cream cheese frosting was tasty, but a bit too sweet. The two stars are for the customer service. The employees at the counter are generally helpful, courteous, and efficient. All bakery employees handle loaves of bread, etc., without wearing a mask or gloves. Today, an employee breathed all over my unwrapped loaf of bread as she removed it from the plastic bag to place in the slicing machine. And only then did she put on plastic gloves. She had the bare loaf of bread mere inches from her nose and mouth, no mask, and she then removed it from the slicer and slide it back into the plastic bag. While this is their normal procedure, they are not taking any special precautions for the safety of their customers. Common sense alone dictates the need to wear a mask when handling unwrapped, exposed food products, especially during this world's worst deadly virus epidemic. read more

All Viktor Benes bakeries are franchises and are independently owned and operated. There is not a great amount of consistency between the different franchises so some are better than others. Many of the Los Angeles area locations, including Century City, Marina Del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Sherman Oaks and North Hollywood, are very good. Unfortunately, the Irvine location is not good at all. I have a tried a number of different things here, from cookies to cakes to pastries, and everything I've tried has been dry and tasteless. The prices are also higher than at some of the other locations. When you buy expensive gourmet cookies and end up throwing them out because they're no good, that really says something. Avoid the Irvine location, and Dana Point as well which is operated by the same franchisee. I wish Viktor Benes as a company had higher standards and required more consistency between their locations. read more

I called the bakery right after this happened to speak to a manager and the jerk said to me "I don't know what you want me to do about it" I then told him "Uh try your pastries and when you get sick since they're stale maybe you won't sell them anymore" I went into Gelson's the other day and I was disgusted as some of the pastries even looked old. Glad I'm going to good ol' French's still for my sweets. Gelsons I still have a bad taste in my mouth (and it's not your black forest cake) and your manager who picked up the phone should be ashamed of himself. read more

I thoroughly enjoy the Alligator coffee cake from Viktor Bene. Even though it's pre-boxed and not served from the window display of goodies, it still deserves praise. I hear the other locations may be different and that the square footage of the bakeries in the other locations may have a wider selection. The Viktor Bene bakery in Irvine is quite small, inside Gelson's Markets, an upscale supermarket reminiscent of Vons and Whole Foods. Viktor Bene is a great bakery. May want to try a different location next time for a different experience, but in the mean time it's the closest one to San Diego. read more

My guests kept telling me it was so moist and tasted sooo good, especially with the custard and raspberry filling and topping and marzipan and fondant frosting. I picked six itmes. While packing the pastry, the lady got a call on her phone and started speaking foreign language. Her conversation went long. She kept packing the pastry and left the bags sitting on her side of the countertop, while still on the phone, until I got help of getting them from another gentleman.
