This deserve the five stars, however, I'm here as I'm writing this review and my girlfriend got a hair in her sandwich. I love this place, but the fact that I went up to the cashier to tell them about it, they just said "ummm idk man, idk what to do, what do you wanna do?... Ummm yeah man idk" instead of apologizing he straight out just looked puzzled. I would've been okay with the hair and the apology behind it. But no, there wasn't one, maybe the guy was too cool to apologize and didn't feel the need to do so, or maybe he just didn't know anything about manners and customer service. read more

Just recently visited Layer Cake Bakery and i had a wonderful experience. Its extremely clean and perfect for people who don't like tight spaces. I am always greeted with a smile and whenever i ask any questions they are are so attentive and really try to help out. Their service is always in point and their pastries are always so scrumptious. The last time I visited i tried the blueberry tart and pumpkin cheesecake and seriously it is the BEST! If you don't know what to get, get the blueberry tart you seriously wont be disappointed. I can't exactly comment on the quality of the cakes or bakery items since I never stepped foot in the place. However I was inquiring for cake quotes for my sisters bridal shower. Liz emailed me only once asking for photos of what I had in mind for a quote... I replied back promptly the same day on 6/11 and never heard back. I realize it is wedding season and the bakery is probably busy however at least reply back and state that, don't just ghost potential clients. Honestly, the only reason I stopped by Layer Cake was because it was next to the pho place I ate lunch at and I wanted a snack. But now writing this review, I see many of the people whose reviews I follow have tried this place and have been disappointed. And in that vein, I follow in their footsteps because it didn't taste great. Granted, I didn't go in with high expectations, so I'm not that saddened, but my chocolate cupcake was hard. From the frosting to the cake, it's as if it was frozen too much. I don't know if that represents a style, but I enjoy soft, fluffy cupcakes and these were not fluffy. My macaroons were good; I got a hazelnut, and the texture and cream there was the softness I wanted in my cupcake. Only time I will go back is if when I eat pho. Because evidently I missed one of their specialities, a green tea and white chocolate cupcake or pudding... I can't remember exactly. But well the story is, I came back with the cupcake and shared it with a co-worker. Once I told the co-worker we had pho bac for lunch, she said this is from Layer Cake right?! I thought I'd be the first one to review it, man I suck. Lol....guess it's not so much of a hidden treasure since everyone knows about it. Anyway, this place opened up last year by two sisters, and since it's so close by home, we decided to check it out. To date, we've had their Raspberry/Mocha/Pistacio/Chocolate french Macaroons (think that's what it's called), and those are absolutely delicious. My favorite is the Raspberry flavor. When you bite into it and take a look inside...it reminds me of that Strawberry shortcake ice cream (at least it looks like it). We've also had their banana bread pudding I think it was , and that was also good. Their chocolate chocolate cookie with sugar on top is absolutely delicious. Everything there is soft, warm, and fresh. Hope to spread the word around because the chef there (one of the sisters) seems to know what she's doing, and I believe has been classicly trained from what I've been told. read more

Layer cake was an extremely pleasant experience! Stopped in today with two other friends for their afternoon rush. My friends and I had never been there but I was able to persuade them to come try the place with me. I must say, we were not disappointed. The young lady behind the counter was quite helpful and helpful with us and our selections, offering her own suggestions for her favorites. After "awe"-ing at how delectable and pretty everything looked, we finally decided to order. I ordered a slice of the tiramisu cake, my friends ordered the small cheesecake, a red velvet cupcake, and 2 macrons: the vanilla and strawberry. I must say, the tiramisu was rich, but not overtly, it was nice and moist with full notes of coffee and vanilla. The cream was fluffy and semi-sweet. All in all, the tiramisu was worth the $4.50 super Delicious!! The macrons were tasty as well, we let it sit for a while to get up to room temperature like many suggested, and it did come out nice and flaky. The strawberry was nicely coated and the creme was just sweet, not not sugary. The vanilla was not as soft as the strawberry but still as good. Not bad for $1.25 a piece The cheesecake was serendipitous! Deliciously soft, full of flavor and sweetness and not overly mushy, the strawberry on top definitely added to the presentation and added to a nice bite at the end. We ended talking and hanging after all the food was gone and eaten. The workers didn't bother us or want to kick us out, the atmosphere of the Baker made it really easy to just sit down and talk for hours. read more

I'm sticking to three stars for Layer Cake. I've been back and tried more items, and while some things have wowed me, the cupcakes have not. Bummer. While I really liked the red velvet cupcake, the Oreo one is still dry and boring. My sister was intent on trying it and it was an utter disappointment (she obviously doesn't read Yelp!). Plus, like Amy K. noted, the frosting is solid as a rock. That's not fun! However, the turkey and cheese crossiant I had (yeah, I'm more of a savory girl) was delicious! Dear Layer Cake Bakery - I'm sorry. I seriously misjudged this place/ordered the wrong things last time. It was time to visit the next door tailor again, which means I meandered over to Layer Cake to get my morning pastry/coffee fix out of pure convenience. This time I was drawn to their enticing display of macarons. OH MY GAWD. Yes. I got the hazelnut (on recommendation of the lady that was working there) and the green tea macarons, and they were like heaven in my mouth. DELISH! At $1.60 a pop, these were pricey little buggers, but I enjoyed every tiny bite that I took. I also had a plain old vanilla latte, and have to say that it was decent. The coffee tasted very fresh, but I could not detect the vanilla to save my soul. Oh well. They appear to roast their own beans in house? Mad props. Now that I know there is more to this place than a dry old scone, I will be back many more times for the macarons! read more

I was definitely craving some macaroons and thank god for yelp bc I was able to find Layer Cake Bakery to get some! I love all their different flavors from rose to passion fruit to mango! One negative about Layer Cake is that their macaroons are on the smaller side and for the price of it, it seems kind of expensive. Other than that, their macaroons are delish! Light and airy with just the right amount of crisp! I haven't tried the other desserts they offered but one day I'll try their cakes! read more

I went here on Thursday to pick up some quick "breakfast" sweets for my office mates. I picked up 3 almond croissants, and 3 raspberry bars. The almond croissants were heavenly! My co-workers raved about how good they were. The centers of these croissants are filled with a custard-y/buttery/sugary filling. The croissants were about $2.75 each. I didn't get a chance to taste the raspberry bars, which were at a cool price of $1.50, but they sure did look good. I'll make sure to ask those who did have a bar how they were and I'll update you all on that. The decor is extremely modern and clean. I couldn't help but feel a bit of a "cold" feeling in there, probably because the type of furniture or lack of furniture available. They also sell specialty cakes, cakes by the slice, individual fruit tarts, and mousse. Probably one of the best places for red velvet, especially with their awesome cream cheese filling... Layer Cake definitely has a huge variety of pastries and they're all handmade, and you can tell.. Only downside, like with all real bakeries, is that the closer it is to closing, the worse the pastries. Try to come early. Their macaroons are sooooo good! They're pretty expensive, about two dollars for a tiny macaroon. However, its crunchy on the outside and chewy and a splash in your mouth. Very good light dessert. I ordered "The Birthday Cake" for my birthday and the raspberry filling was soooo delicious. If you are used to eating birthday cakes and you always just chose between the three: chocolate, vanilla or mocha, and want to try a really good birthday cake that is not chocolate vanilla or mocha, try the Birthday cake! I'm always on the hunt for delicious macarons and decided to check this bakery out after seeing photos of their macarons several times on facebook. I went on a Friday afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all - only one other girl sitting at a table. The girl working greeted me and was helpful with me choosing my macaron flavors. I got a box of 7 for $11 and after calculating that's like $1.57 per macaron - which is pretty normally priced from what I've seen. I ended up ordering: Vanilla, Strawberry, Hazelnut, Coffee, Green Tea, Peach, and Passion Fruit (which was recommended by the worker). I've noticed that several reviews have commented that these macarons are kinda flaky and I have to agree. They're not THAT bad, but definitely more flaky than the macarons from Bottega Louie, 'Lette, and Laduree. However, eating them at room temperature is key to fully enjoy a macaron and that definitely seemed to help make these less flaky. My favorites were Strawberry, Hazelnut, and Passion Fruit. Those seems to have the most flavor. I was surprised that I liked the Passion Fruit because I usually find them too tart for my taste, but this one was manageable. I was sad they didn't have lemon macarons when I was there since that's one of my favorite flavors :( Overall, these are okay. I do like these better than the macarons from Bon Epi, but I still have to admit I prefer the macarons from LA. However, since I go to school in the OC, Layer Cake Bakery's macarons will suffice...until my next macaron adventure! read more

Used layer cake to make a birthday cake. They did a great job in replicating the picture of the cake I wanted. The only complaint I have is that the cake was dry. I ordered a one tiered lemon raspberry cake and the Flavors were there but the cake itself was dry. The macarons here are just okay but what I mainly come here for are their Caneles. They are my favorite pastry but they sell out quick so you have to get there early. read more

I came by yesterday after feeling the need for a sugar rush since my lab partner loves sugar and couldn't stop talking about chocolate while we were performing our Western Blot in lab. Haha. So I dragged one of my friends out and I ordered a slice of the red velvet cake. The cake was really soft, cool, and moist. It wasn't unbearably sweet, but sweet enough that you won't feel like you have to wash your mouth out because it will give you cavities. This is a great treat after a long day of studying. For $4.50 I was able to satisfy my sweet tooth. I would definitely pick this place over Sprinkles. It also serves Organic tea and their butter is real (hopefully that's not a bad thing!). It closes at 7PM which is a bummer and about ~1 or 1/2 hour before closing, their breakfast items are 30% off or something like that. read more

We went to Layer Cake around 10:30 in the morning and the place was empty. I wasn't exactly surprised, it was a saturday morning. I got a carrot cake cupcake and my boyfriend decided on a slice of red velvet cake. Both together were about $8, not bad. The cupcake would have tasted pretty good if it was fresh. The cake was cold and the cream cheese frosting was hard. The red velvet cake also wasn't fresh, but it was in better shape. much more moist. Though the frosting literally just tasted like cheesecake, and not like cream cheese. Pretty much everything was okay, not great. I probably would have given them 4 stars if the cupcake and cake had been fresh. I'm guessing it had to do with the timing of when we went? Either way though, they shouldn't be selling day old products. read more

Layer Cake is just a few blocks from my apartment. It's SO great to find a private family owned cafe in Irvine among all the Starbucks and Paneras. When I walked in I already loved it, the high vaulted ceiling made the place spacious yet cozy. I like the big table in the bay window enclave, feels like you can eat your cake without anyone seeing you be a fatty. I got the green tea cream cake the first time and it was...alright, honestly I was a bit dissapointed by the lack of green tea flavor, but on the plus it was not overly sweet. The next time I came here with my boyfriend we got something with hazelnut in it and we devoured it. The coffee drinks are good nothing to be wowed about, I got a mocha that was pretty sweet (not the best idea when you already have cake!!! *trip to dentist*) Overall, I recommend it if you are looking for a local place to satisfy your sweet tooth. The cakes are lovely and are served generously in big slabs instead of wedges. The cafe is clean and bright, plently of seating. read more

The chiffon cake was more sawdust than light and fluffy, the red velvet cake was dense and flavorless, and the cake layers in the tiramisu weren't soaked long enough to have the liqueur permeate the cake. The raspberry buttercream on the chiffon cupcake had only the slightest whisper of raspberry flavor - definitely not enough to redeem the leaden cake. I was looking for some good desserts to celebrate an accomplishment with some friends, so after looking at Yelp reviews I decided to stop by Layer Cake Bakery on a very cold, windy, and rainy night. I was a little taken aback by their cake slice prices: $4.95 each! But, each slice is pretty thick and could feed two normal, healthy adults. Instead, though, I opted for 6 cupcakes: two red velvet, two strawberry, and two chocolate ones. Everyone thought they tasted really good. There's sweet, and then there's Layer Cake sweet, which was just the right amount, not the headache-inducing, heartburn-feeling after eating a traditional store-bought cake. Plus, each cupcake was under $3, which made my trip here totally worth it. To be honest, I was expecting more selection and variety. However, as is true most of the time, their limited menu indicates that they hit the nail on the head with what they do offer. I was really pleased and will definitely come back whenever I need to get more cupcakes for a social event! read more

LCB has been my go to bakery for many years now. Liz transformed my ideas into a cake for my husband's 40th and I was sold! She has helped make my son's 10th Birthday cake a hit. That success made my friends a repeat customer here too, for many years now. And am back again here for my daughter's birthday cakes. Liz was open to going the extra mile and considerate to work within my limitations and preferences. That's enough reason for me to go back here and also recommend LCB to many of my friends - added the taste and quality! I tried the napoleon and I do have a thing for trying all the napoleons there are. My verdict? VERY GOOD. A solid 4 on a scale of 5. The puff pastry was crisp, the cream was the right type of cream, which is not too heavy and not overly sweet. The real napoleons have that top white layers with the chocolate lines. Now when you bite into the napoleon you will taste it in this order. The nice smooth cream followed by the puff pastry and then the full sweetness of the top white layer. The napoleon boosted up the my rating of this place. So now instead of a solid 3, I would give this place a 3.89 The raspberry thumb print was good, I would have liked it to be a little more moist. read more

Tried their macarons finally and although I didn't expect much, these were pretty good! Vanilla, rose, salted caramel were the ones I tried. Rose one doesn't smell or taste like rose. I thought the flavor and scent were like almost expired food. I think I read a review saying the same thing and I now believe it. Not sure why. I don't recommend the rose one. Salted caramel is really good. It is usually my favorite macaron flavor at any store and become one here as well. I dislike anything overly sugary especially with macarons and the ones at LCB give me just the right amount of sweetness when I'm craving sugar. The macaron shells really give me the good, nutty flavors of almond flour and like the texture (crunchy and chewy). Still, I really recommend their newyork cheesecake (red velvet bottom) and earl grey tart the most! read more

It's the perfect place for dessert and a nice conversation. Although, there are only about 5 or 6 tables but most people who come in just pick up their treats and go. Nonetheless, nice ambience. Here's a listing and commentary of what I've tried from this bakery. Green Tea Cake-the frosting was a little too 'rubbery' and the cake itself was not moist. It wasn't sweet either. They nailed the green tea flavor alright but the texture didn't cut it for me. I've had better. Red Velvet Cupcake-this little cupcake was very moist yet lacked flavor. The frosting again was too rubbery. I don't know what they use in their frosting but it's not as 'smooth' as frosting should be. I like my cupcakes fluffy and this one wasn't. Pistachio, Chocolate Ganache, and Raspberry Jam French Macaroons -All of these were very tasty; especially the Pistachio. They were soft and chewy-just as they should be. Of all the bakeries in Irvine that I've been to, this has got to be one of the best, if not THE best. But then again, is that really saying much? What do we have here in Irvine? Corner Bakery. Panera. French's. I'll give you French's because it's not bad. But given those choices, Layer Cake could not fail, can it? It doesn't disappoint, that's for sure. I've had their Calfornia Omelette here and it's pretty good [avocado, cheese, turkey], with amazing hash browns, and pretty thinly sliced toast, which looks to be thrown on the panini press for about a minute or two. Scrumptious cookies, macarons, cakes, and cupcakes. I've had their lemon macron and if you like lemon, this little morsel of goodness will knock your socks off. I really like their double chocolate cookie. They have cool and funny sign that reads, "Please do not press on the cookies, they are freshly baked". I even asked if everything in the bakery is homemade and true to my hope, it is. Now, being it's in Irvine, the bakery is not cheap. Almost $2 for a cookie, $1.75 for the macron, etc. BUT, if it gets people out of Corner Bakery and Panera, what's a $.50 surcharge to taste something that wasn't made in a giant factory in Fontucky only to be trucked over to Irvine and sold as "fresh" baked goods? C'mon Irvine-ites, get out of the sterile confines of Starbucks, Corner Bakeries, and Paneras of this world and visit Layer Cake! The five star is only for their TO DIE FOR red velvet cake! Words cant even describe how heavenly this goodness is...really. Super moist, flavorful, finished with the touch of decadent cream cheese frosting, what else can you ask for in life? I've also gave a shot to the tiramisu cake, not a fan, and also the rainbow colored macaroons, which in my opinion should be graded on their looks and not it's taste, because I sure wasn't a fan of those either. Any of you guys watched the Korean drama, My Name is Kim Sam Soon? Coming into an Asian modern bakery like this totally made me think of her. I love the atmosphere of the bakery, but I wasn't blown away by the taste of it when I had a slice of their cake. I'm blanking on the name of the cake that I had, but it was one of their specialties cakes. I also got a cookie, but like others have said it was kind of dry and hard. I want some melt in your mouth cookies for the price I'm paying, you know? So, I was kind of disappointed. I'm still rooting for this place so I will give it another go, but only on the cakes. I used to like their macarons a lot, but after my last visit, I changed my mind, Compared with other fresh made macarons, they refrigerate them. When I took my first bite of my peach macarons, it was hard and no flavor =( You will need to let rise at room temperature 30 minutes, so the texture would be back to normal. (Who doesn't want to eat their macarons right after they buy it?!) The red velvet cupcake is moist and the cream cheese is not too sweet. I give it 4 stars. The only thing I dislike is the size. Just dropped by for lunch today because of a friends recommendation... I was very very tempted by the delicious looking desserts, but I fought my temptation since i'm trying to cut out sweets from my diet! So i ended up ordering the curry chicken sandwhich... my first reaction was... "damn that looks yummy as hell"... and not to my suprise... it was yummy as hell! The bread was perfectly toasted so the sandwhich has a nice crunch to it, and the curry chicken was just right... not too heavy on the curry flavor and just enough chicken and veggies... all i needed was a cold one to wash it all down, but I'm not allowed to drink during my lunch breaks because unfortunately i have to work again right... darn! My work is about a 10-15 minute drive from layer cake, so that will limit the number of lunch trips i can take... but i will definitely be back and recommend others! Came upon this cute little cafe while visiting a friend in Irvine. They have a nice sized selection of desserts and also carry those delectable delights called macarons. I wasn't expecting much, not having yelped this place beforehand, but the macarons were actually fresh and not stale at all. I got the peach and passion fruit macarons which I really liked because of the fillings. Usually macaron fillings are just sugary cream but the peach macaron actually had a peach tasting filling while the passion fruit had a tarty filling that combined well with the sweet crust. Try these if you are the fruity flavor type! Now I know where to go to satisfy my craving if I'm in the area. FYI, there' s no wifi in case you wanted to study there. read more
