This place is a hidden gem in McKinney square. If your looking for great coffee and some down home cooked breakfast then look no further. Excellent coffee choices and pretty surprised at the menu of food they are pumping out wIth it being a nice little coffee shop. Plenty of seats and cool atmosphere to sit and talk, no loud music blaring in the background. Had the corn beef hashed and the potatoes were cooked perfectly with nice strips of cooked corned beef hash layered in it, excellent choice. My fiancée had the migas which were also amazing and cooked like my momma made them. My coffee choice was the Nutella latte, I mean that's all that needs to be said and it was great! Overall a great experience, friendly staff and the chef checked on us to make sure we were happy with the food. Nice to know they care about the customer beyond just the cafes floor. We had the sweetest bartender but another bartender butted into our experience and ruined it. We said we wanted to pay as we go, meaning we would literally pay after each round. Ready to pay cash, the other bartender said the he had to have a credit card no matter what just to ring up our order. There was very awkward and hostile exchange between us and the bartender that was not even the one serving us. He said that too many people walk their tab but we were very confused because we were literally saying we wanted to pay. It was such a cute place to be ruined by such negativity and unwarranted suspicion of someone not paying when we literally asked to pay! This is McKinney Texas with one door out. I feel like it would be better customer service to give the patron the benefit of the doubt (especially when they were asking to pay for their round of drinks immediately) than act like they were trying to skip their tab. Came here right after the 4th of July Parade, with reservations. This of course is probably the worst time to try a place for the first time, with all the additional foot traffic. I was surprised we were seated right on time, even with the reservations, so major points for actually knowing the meaning of a reservation. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. We made a reservation at 1:30 pm on Mother's Day and we had called a few weeks back and asked if we would get rushed since they close at 2. The man on the phone assured us we would not and could stay as long as we could. We get there on the day of our reservation and we are informed that we have 30 minutes to order and eat. They also tell us they can't serve any food or drinks after 2. I talk to the manager and tell him I had been assured this wouldn't happen and he's pretty much worthless. Sitting at the table is my dad who is a well known restaurant owner and consultant and has been for over 25 years. He has helped many people open restaurants, consult, and franchise restaurants over his over 25 years in the business. He is appalled that this is happening and says this isn't how a restaurant is run. We rush to eat (my mom and dad refuse to order bc they don't want to be rushed). We end up paying and leaving and agree never to return. We end up going to Landon winery and have great service and it saves our Mother's Day from getting ruined. Whoever owns layered needs to find employees and managers that actually care about your business and need to make sure they aren't lying to customers on the phone. read more

I had breakfast at Layered with a friend. She ordered the Polenta Pancake with a side of ham and I ordered the Sweet Potato Hash. She was disappointed; said it wasn't as good as the last time she was there. It was my first time so I didn't have any expectations. The Hash was okay; nothing to write home about. I thought it was a little pricey; with tip each meal was just under $20. But the real reason for this one star review is that while the server made two transactions BOTH transactions ended up on my credit card. I called them twice and spoke with a Manager each time - each time promised they would look into it. Guess I'm going to have to take it up with my credit card company. Last night we went to Layered to get something warm during Arts in Bloom downtown McKinney. We stepped into a sweet, warm and inviting environment with amazing food and some of the best hot chocolate I have ever had, ever. While enjoying our treats and perfectly warm sweetness for the evening, we discovered the coolest thing! Cookies you can paint! They make cookies with designs on them that come with little paints and a paintbrush ( the cookies and paints are all edible!!!!) What a really cool find!!!! My wife and I often visit here on Sunday mornings for brunch. She gets an omelet and I get the corned beef hash. We both get the bottomless mimosas. I understand that this is a new restaurant so there are definitely some Growing Pains here. To begin, the staff needs customer service training... Also, we ordered the Cuban sandwich, which we do in most restaurants that we go to. This Cuban sandwich had so much Dijon mustard that tasted like Wasabi dynamite in your mouth. It literally gave all three of us a spicy brain freeze that went right up the back of our noses to the point of gagging. We politely told the waitress with the intention of her telling the chef or the owner because we wanted them to succeed. The sandwich would have been pretty good but the sauce made it inedible. Two different waitresses responded by saying I'll make sure I let customers know that it's spicy before they order it. That doesn't help your business. It was also tiny and way overpriced. Ah-MAZING brunch!!! We were greeted by the owner, Nir, when we walked in. We were set in super cozy chairs. Seriously, I could've taken a nap when I was finished eating. I had the smoked salmon with poached eggs over English muffins. The plate came with 2. I could barely finish one. It was exquisite! I was stuffed. My husband and I could've shared it. He got the breakfast tacos. I asked him how he'd describe them for this review. He said, "oh....they were.....awesome. Just awesome. Honestly, they were to best breakfast tacos I've ever had." Lol We had bottomless mimosas, green tea, and white mochas. My mocha had a 1930's woman design on it. My husband's had a cloud with lightening bolts. Super cool. Nir greeted everyone who came in with handshakes and hugs. It seemed like he knew everyone. Great family atmosphere with a modern industrial style. We live an hour and 15 min away and we would drive to McKinney again JUST for brunch here. Coffee has a good flavor, but it's not strong enough for my taste. The only reason I gave 4 stars is that not a single server or staff person had on a face mask. Hope you all read it. So I had been wanting a good gingerbread cookie for the last couple of years, yes years. Lol, , you know the kind you made with your mom or grandmother at the holiday time. Well I found out a lot of the bakeries don't have them. I googled bakeries near me on Monday and after calling 5 bakeries no one had gingerbread cookies. Isn't this the time that they sell them, at least I thought. After calling the 6th bakery { Layered Bakery}, the gentleman who answer said no we don't have any today but we can make you some. I said to him no I only wanted one or two cookies. He then said we can make you some and have them ready for you tomorrow. I said no I don't need a special order, he said oh it's no problem. You can buy one or two it will be no extra cost I then said will they be the soft ones, he said how do you want them, soft you got it. I thought wow this is so nice. I then hung up and told my family I found a bakery that is going to make me some gingerbread cookies. Yayyyyyyy. So of course the next day, my daughter and I located the bakery and headed to get my cookies. So excited. The little things that make you happy. We got to the location and the town looks like something out of a Hallmark Christmas movie without the snow because I live in Texas. So we go in this charming upscale bakery, it was nice and cozy, people so friendly. I get to the counter and I said "hi my name is Jane and I called yesterday regarding getting some gingerbread cookies. " The cashier said " hold on" and this other gentleman came over and I said again "I called about the gingerbread cookies" and he said "oh yes" and gave me a big hi five and said "welcome". He start telling me about the cookies and that he hope his Baker got the recipe the way I wanted it. He said try one first. He gave me and my daughter the cookie to taste. It look like a medium size sugar cookie but made of Gingerbread. Gourmet style. This cookie was the BEST GINGERBREAD COOKIE I EVER ATE!. The bakery had some great looking bake goods. So my daughter and I got 6 of the Gourmet gingerbread cookies, a Gingerbread cupcake with cream cheese icing and , a raspberry cheesecake cupcake. They put each cupcake in a fancy box and put each cookie in a individual bag. After bagging everything up the owner said it's on the house. We said no we don't want you to give it to us. He insisted and would not take our money. We thanked him for the kindness and generosity. And I told him we would pay it forward to someone else today. You know the way times are now it felt really good to experience a prepriorter that has excellent customer service and you just feel welcomed. There are still good people in this world. I know this rant seem crazy and long about some cookies but it's more than that. It's about good customer service, kindness and making people feel good with whatever service or product you have. I just wanted to share this . The bakery is called Layered Bakery in McKinney TX. If you are anywhere near there stop by you won't be sorry. Oh yes, we did pay it forward that day. We did it anonymously. Update: The Gingerbread cupcake and the Raspberry cupcake were DELICIOUS too. They also serve food, coffees and mimosas. Well, the smell of fresh coffee is great and the staff are friendly but I wasn't impressed with the food quality or time. I had the corned beef hash and my wife had a cheese pizza. The meal took a long time but we also had to search for our own silverware and napkins. My wife's cheese pizza wasn't great and had a strange sweet taste to it, no idea why. My hash wasn't traditional hash. It appears they took yesterday's sliced corned beef for sandwiches and chopped it up, put some diced potatoes and some onions with it and bathed it in grease then threw a couple eggs over easy on top. I've had something similar elsewhere but whoever the chef is, obviously has never had real corned beef hash and they shouldn't pass this off as such. They took the hash off the bill but we won't be going back for sure. Not even for just coffee. read more

We checked this place out on the recommendation of our chiropractor, and it did not disappoint! We both had a signature Layered cappuccino and chicken and waffles. The cappuccino was a little surprising as I was expecting more foam, whereas this one was more like a latte, but I like them both so I enjoyed it. The latte art was a definite plus, and well executed. The chicken and waffles was my very first of its kind, and while I still feel it's an odd combination, it was delicious. The waffles especially were spectacular! The use of pearled sugar in the batter made for a delightful texture and the taste was out of this world. We grabbed some baked goods to try out when we're not so full--it will probably be our breakfast in the morning, but how could we go wrong with a coffee cake cupcake, and a s'mores bar made with real homemade chocolate and marshmallow? What a lovely and unique offering to the McKinney square; we will definitely be back. read more

Went to Layered today for brunch, yes it was a Tuesday. The food was fantastic, but service was awful. The waitress/bartender who helped us seemed to not really like us? She delayed service the entire time, being a snail space to serve at the bar. She seemed super annoyed with our whole interaction from sit down to leaving. Total attitude from start to finish, Giving us the check before it was even requested? She clearly did not want to be there. We might give this place another chance, but hopefully "she" is not working the bar. read more

Let's start with their effort to make their patrons feel welcomed. They fail. We had a reservation. Part of my party arrived on time while two ran behind. The manager did not allow us to sit at the table until we were all there and threatened us with losing the reservation. However, the reservation was confirmed and part of the party was there. When we were all there, the first thing that came out of the manager's mouth was "You are late"....I get it... sorry for those who were late but some were ready to be seated and order food and drinks! The place was actually losing money by not assigning us a table asap. Poor system.....As to FOOD..it is OK.. there are better breakfast places. I am sure you can cook a better breakfast at home. Now the worst part...Service and Management. The staff wants to turn around tables as fast as they can..Your food will come out fast. The minute you put your flatware down, the table will be cleared and you will get your bill. Do not dare to ask for more coffee or water because they will give you a to-go cup! In sum, if you want to have breakfast you will be better off eating a breakfast sandwich at Chick-fil-A where it is their "pleasure" to assist you. If you are looking to catch up with family or friends, you should go to a different place downtown McKinney or invite them to your home so you can enjoy catching up with them. To clarify, this is not my first visit to Layered. I've been there a few times because I like to support local businesses. We have always been rushed, but I thought to give this place another chance. The over medium eggs were hard fried with a solid yolk. The "fresh fruit side" was more of a garnish with four thin slices of banana, one strawberry and two blackberries. I ordered German Chocolate cupcakes with pecan coconut icing. I was very specific about the icing, I told the lady I did not want any chocolate icing on the cupcake (because that is not a true German Chocolate cake) I wanted only the pecan coconut icing. I would have baked it my self but did not have the time. It was my friends birthday and the only kind of cupcake she wanted was GC with PC icing, So when she gets here I open the box and there is the stupid chocolate icing on the cupcake with the PC icing on top of it. It was too late for me to try to fix them. Her birthday and she couldn't even eat on of the cupcakes because she hates the chocolate icing. Obviously they can not follow instructions. I did give them 2 stars because the cup cakes were good but NOT what I orders. It would not have made me so angry if I had not been so specific with my instructions. Update: After seeing this review the owner called up and called me a liar. The service was soooo slow, we ordered 2 coffees and 2 waters. 1 water was brought to us and about 10 mins later our drip coffees were delivered. We ordered the hummus plate, great flavor and serving amount, more than enough for the two of us. The chicken salad was beyond delicious and talk about fresh! Lettuce and tomato...perfectly fresh! House made chips, just the right amount of salt...you know it's right when you can't wait to eat another chip! Flat Iron Steak Sandwich & Smoke Fries...delicious!
