Been here a few times now.... The first two times they were out of almost everything and were pretty rude about it. Tonight my husband convinced me to try it again because our place up the street was packed... we got burnt ends and sausage. The 2 sides are extremely small. Big T's has been around for a while and I can't say I was impressed. I showed up around the lunch hour and they seemed closed, no cars in the lot. However, I walked in and waited for them to take my order. I felt like I was inconveniencing them. I ordered a brisket sandwich and beans. The sandwich was good but nothing special. The beans stunk. A friend recommended Big T's BBQ. it was a horrible experience. It was Super Bowl Sunday, around 3:30pm. We were in the drive through for over an hour before we received our food; a slab of ribs, burnt ends, coleslaw, & baked beans. The food was awful at best, the coleslaw was disgusting, burnt ends burnt beyond eating, the BBQ sauce was lame. Basically we all had a plate, no one finished and we through the rest of it away. Great place for some homemade BBQ. We ordered the combo plate with ribs and pulled pork with two sides (Mac n cheese and sweet potato fries). The meat was amazing! Ribs were so tender they were falling off the bone. Mac n' cheese was a little watery and didn't have a super cheesey flavor. BBQ sauce was super interesting! Had very strong tomato undertones. Overall solid place for some BBQ. Knocked a star off for the interior- it's pretty bare bones and dirty. Floors were sticky and bathrooms were a mess (no towels, broken door, etc). read more

Best barbecue in Kansas City!!! I have tried a long list of places highly rated in Kansas City. I rate them based upon ribs and usually get a couple of other options. The ribs were at perfect tenderness with a delightful flavor, best I've had in KC . The burnt ends were actually burnt ends with a perfect bark and great taste. On a trip to KC for baseball and relaxation, I wanted to find a place that was reviewed well for barbecue and saw interesting reviews about Big T's. I was bringing my nephew and he was interested in checking out this authentic sounding location. When we located the restaurant, we were not sure if it was open, but went inside and checked it out. The service was a cafeteria arrangement, placing the order with a cashier and waiting for the food to be placed on the counter. We both ordered ribs (4 bones) and it was served with 2 side dishes. My nephew is not adventurous and ordered double sweet potato fries, but I got slaw and the sweet potato fries. The food was good. The slaw seemed like it was pre-made and packed into a Styrofoam bowl with a lid, but the food was good. The barbecue sauce is more tomato flavored than sweet but seasoned very well. I am unsure how the pandemic affected the business, but the interior of the restaurant is very run down and dark. There is a drive thru process and I recommend that if you want to enjoy the food. read more

The barbecue here is awesome. It is a total dump, as many great barbecue joints are, but that makes it pretty damn authentic. The workers are really sweethearts, warm and friendly. And they have two nice new big TVs to watch football or what have you. And the turkey sandwich is awesome (trying to be a little healthier) and fries are excellent (ok not so healthy). Was not the business. Big T's was recommended by my cousin when I came out to visit him. Me and my wife went there looking for some KC burnt ends, they didn't have any. My cousin told me that Big T's gives good portion sizes for the money, and the portions were decent , but the taste was not. Who cares if the portions are big if it doesn't taste like anything. I was told to get it with the sauce on the side so that you can taste the meat. The meat didn't taste seasoned. Maybe it was an off day, but I won't be back to this place. Fortunately, I know enough not to judge KC bbq rep off of one place, because if I did, I would say KC bbq is all hype and no Truth. It pains me to say anything bad about a KC BBQ joint, but if you're going to serve BBQ in KC, you need to measure up. I was very disappointed in Big T's during my recent visit. The first thing you notice upon arrival is the very plain and nondescript look of the place both inside and out. That's not necessarily a bad thing as many good BBQ places are basically hole-in-the-walls, but in this case I think it's an indication of a lack of attention to other things as well. On the bright side, the ribs were at least acceptable, with good texture, flavor, and the ability to pull the meat off the bone with little effort. The fries were very similar to Arthur Bryant's style - fresh cut and thick, a little under-cooked, but I've had worse. My biggest complaint is something I partially blame myself for. When I ordered burnt ends at the register, the lady at the front turned to the kitchen and hollered, "Didn't we run out of burnt ends?" The guy in the back responded, "Uh....... No, we're good." A few moments later I watched the guy in the kitchen put a hunk of brisket, from the lean or flat end, into the electric meat slicer. I immediately thought, "he's obviously not making my burnt ends, because everyone knows burnt ends are cut from the fat end of the brisket." Unfortunately, I ordered my food to-go so I could eat it while tail-gating at Arrowhead so I didn't discover until an hour later when I opened the box that in fact he had been cutting my burnt ends from the lean end of the meat. Ugh, I should have known better. I can only assume the cook took one look at me and decided I would be too ignorant to know how burnt ends are made and I would never know that in fact I hadn't received the real thing. Wrong-O. I may live in Texas now, but I spent 25 years in Kansas City and I know what burnt ends are. I suggest that next time the restaurant should demonstrate a little bit of integrity. Tell the customer you're out of burnt ends if you are sold out - there's no shame in that. Now I'll never know if the "real" burnt ends are any good, because I got "burnt", and I'll probably never come back. read more

Drove across town to try Big T's so I could check it off my BBQ list, on the way I was hoping it might be closed for some reason just so I could go to LC's up the street - one of my faves; but so glad they were open! Had the rib plate with 4 bones. Damn fine; smoked well and drizzled in a sweet smoky sauce. Fries seem to be house cut, great mixture of soft potato innards and crispy exterior,. Cole slaw - creamy but probably mass produced - meh. buddy had the double decker with ham and beef - HUGE! Really enjoyed the environment, walk up to order with the smoker pit right in front of you, dining area is cozy and clean with old KC sports memorabilia hanging around - Pictures of the KC Kings!! No, the five star review isn't solely for the matching initials shared with Big T's...and thanks for asking but no, also no relation to the worshippable pit master (who I'm still not sure even has a name beginning with T but you go research that). The drive to Big T's isn't too far if you're from the right side of the state line and even if it is, it is totally worth the trip. Initials must be a big thing around here because I've still yet to try the equally as legendary LC's practically right next door. But Big T's sure makes itself hard to beat. Serving up platters of burnt ends, unarguably some of KC's top ribs, smoked sliced beef, BBQ ham and chicken as well as all the fixings. The sides at Big T's do not skimp however, I am a little confused about these majestically french fries some of my Yelp friends speak of. On my visit they were quite limp, undercooked and raw potato tasting. But, the rest of the lunch was outstanding! The burnt ends had a bark that I had never experienced with smokey crunch. The ribs were hearty and full of meat with a good amount of sauce already slathered on top. The sliced beef was velvety perfection, lean meat with a layer of marbled melt in your mouth fat. Also, do not pass up on the baked beans which are full of a balance between maple sweetness and salty savoriness. The amount of spices and substantial pieces of BBQ meat make them insanely flavorful and probably nearly impossible to replicate precisely. When I dined in at Big T's for lunch on a weekday close to their opening time of 11am the service also shined with smiles and no early(ish) morning attitudes. The dining room was full of the typical BBQ crowd of mostly male hardworking individuals who enjoy a big plate of meat almost as much as me! And I even witnessed the fine men and ladies of Big T's pushing out at least twenty to-go orders for our cities finest firemen in record setting time, with ease and grace and smiles on their face! Major takeaway, this is authentic "real" Kansas City Barbecue with a proud history that you can taste in its product, it contains none of the pretentiousness but all of the perfection of years and years of pitmastering. Approaching the restraunt a handwritten sign says no public bathrooms, is that even legal? Inside there were a lot of flies flying around, and the floors were sticky.
