Heard about it for years and it didn't disappoint. From the mains to the sides. We moved here from Birmingham, Alabama where drive through bbq joints were like Starbucks on every corner. Well, everything changes even LD's. Back in the day when L D's was a run out of a lonely little gas station Times were simpler the footprint was smaller and the food was just better. Today it seems that while incredible barbecue has gained L D's were the notoriety, they've suffered the inevitable for many. They've gotten big enough to require scaling up but have not figured out how to do it without compromising the quality of their product. I'm sure in a perfect World without the need to scale LD could work his magic, the food would be incredible. Scaled up and using the process they do to meet the demand at their newest location destroys the freshness, juiciness and flavor of the food. The brisket was cool, sinewy, and flavorless without sauce. Pulled pork was dry and coolish as well. The sides were meh. It is now just ordinary and certainly not worth the drive any longer relative to other barbecue available. LD's has just gotten too big and not sophisticated enough to handle the demand to maintain quality. read more

My friend and I consider ourselves bbq enthusiasts - we enjoy cooking good bbq and eating it as well. We decided to try a place in Milwaukee that claimed it was named "The Best BBQ in Wisconsin" and located very near to State Fair Park. Um yeah, no. We recently discovered LD's and decided to give it try although it was an hour from us. We ordered two of the Super Samplers and were blown away by the quality of the meat, the smoke on it and the sauce offerings. The sides were amazing as well. We were lucky to have picked a Sunday that had Peach Cobbler as the special - OMG. It was fabulous. Wow, wow, wow is all I can say. We revisited this past Sunday and were pleasantly surprised to experience the same quality as our trip a few weeks back. I had a full rack of ribs along with potato salad and the beans with rib meat. Amazing. My friend had the Super Sampler, again. He enjoyed the cornbread so much so that he had purchased six pieces to bring home on both excursions. I don't think we will be venturing out to look for another bbq place when we get the hankering - LD's is now our go to. We cannot wait to try the burnt ends next time! read more

Atmosphere - Very bright is the best way to describe it. Which is fine. Two long tables take up most of the dining room, with the rest of the area filled in with smaller tables along the windows. Extra chairs in the corner were grabbed to help with all the family needs. By the time we left we had taken over the two large tables. Food Drinks - I was told to try the Moon Man IPA from New Glarus Brewing. A solid IPA. The beers are stored in a fridge behind the counter. If you are not familiar with the local beers you might want to take a peak before you get in line. They also have a self-serve pop machine. Dinner - They had burnt ends tonight so I had to go with them. The pieces were pre-sauced. The sauce to me was just okay, they also had three sauces on the table which I did not try. The coleslaw was alright. I loved the corn bread. Service - It is a waiting in line and wait until they are ready for you type place. For Wisconsin, LDs has very good BBQ.  Scores are based off of some of the best BBQ joints in the country so they may seem low to some. Brisket  - 8/10 - very tender and smokey. Ribs - 7/10 - very tender and fall off the bone Chicken - 6/10 - nice and smoky but the skin was really rubbery Sausage - 6/10 - good Bbq beans - 10/10 - some of the best I've ever had Corn bread - 3/10 - not great, would avoid Mac & cheese (regular, no meat) - 4/10 - basically velveta and noodles. Bland. Would avoid unless you're getting it with BBQ in it. Banana pudding - 8/10 - really great, highly recommend. Sweet tea - 3/10 - it's no southern sweet tea, definitely not strong enough. Sauces - 6/10 - pretty typical overly sweet/smokey tomato based sauces.  The tangy one is the most interesting. The spicy one would be good if it had more heat but as-is it's very mild. Service - 10/10 - very nice people System - 8/10 - can get very busy, good flow but could be better. Amenities - 9/10 - nice and clean Overall 8/10 but 10/10 for Wisconsin BBQ.  Worth a trip but probably no more than an hours distance. If I'm in the area I would absolutely go back and get the brisket, beans and banana pudding. read more

I didn't have many reasons to go to the East Troy area...until we tried LD's BBQ. Husband and I were in the area on a fall drive and found LD's via Yelp. As others have noted, it's a counter service place inside a gas station. There is nothing wrong with that! If you want to eat in, there is space for maybe 25-30 people or you can get it to go. Drinks come from the attached gas station so you have any number of soda choices or you can grab 24oz single cans of beer (Lite, Bud, even Steel Reserve!) for under $3/ea. The menu offers a lot of choice for a smaller place, and the portions are very generous for the price. A "dinner" comes with about 24oz of meat, so plenty for 2 people. Because I was not looking for a meat coma, we both decided on sandwiches. He went with the Drake aka Triple Threat which combines chicken, pork and brisket on one sandwich. Meat is served unsauced, but they'll sauce it for you if you like or you can add your own at the table. I stayed simple with a pulled chicken sandwich - IT IS THE BEST DAMN CHICKEN I'VE EVER HAD. EVER. I'm not kidding - it was moist, juicy, a bit smoky - I had no need at all to use the sauce (their BBQ sauce is too sweet for me personally but the Hubs liked it). He loved his sandwich too, rating the brisket as very lean and the pulled pork as above average. We both agreed the standout was the amazing chicken. Seriously, I've been in the South for work a lot lately and this beats anything I had there, here or anywhere - by far. For sides, we tried mac'n'cheese which needed a bit of salt. Once added, amazingly good! I had some cornbread - finally a moist cornbread! There's also slaw, beans and potato salad and they had some delicious looking banana pudding for dessert. The people working were super friendly - joking around with customers, etc. It's clear there are lots of regulars as they knew people by name. We had the chance to talk with the owner for a moment and tell him how great his chicken was and he admitted that it's his favorite too. If you're on a fall drive to the Elegant Farmer, out on the bike, or just need some amazing BBQ this is your place. GET IN HERE. Update - they now have a mac'n'cheese dinner for under $10 which is a giant portion of delicious mac topped with a giant portion of delicious BBQ (chicken in my case). I was driving past east Troy so you know where I'm going. I had the ribs and chicken again. Leons ribs are just annoying the was they fall off the bone and when you dip them in the sauce they fall apart and drop into the sauce. How Leon gets the ribs that tender and juicy is amazing. I don't know where Leon got his skills but he is the rib master. The chicken was very good and the sides the same. I had the spicy BBQ sauce this time and it was quite good. This is a must try if you like ribs and I wish Leon was closer to Milwaukee. This is five thumbs up. When I posted this review originally I forgot to tell you that Leon asked me why I never order his chicken because it's good so I tell him I just love the ribs so what does he do, he slips a pin wheel in with my ribs. Lost and found I was out in the "country" and passed by the signage and wondered if this was the guy that used to be located closer in off 164 & ES as his space was lost by the building of a new gas station. A quick search showed that it was, and he now even had indoor seating! At the old location I had several stops for meat by the pound as well as sandwiches. I fixated on the Mac and Cheese dinner. I was so impressed with the spiral noodles, cheesy goodness and heaping portion of pulled pork. The dinner also included a soft roll. This is a dinner for three and I'm looking forward to leftovers the rest of the week. I also picked up a side of coleslaw - it's a creamy blend with finely grated slaw. The only drawback I saw was the sauce - they are selling bottles of sauce and dry rub and saw a bunch of 5 gallon buckets labeled "prepared for ld's" -- the sauce was good, but I'd go five stars if it was house-made. Legendary. Delicious. Am I over-hyping? NOPE. LD's is the real deal! I had first heard of this place thru word of mouth, so I had to look it up on Yelp. Upon further investigating I noticed that two Yelp elites that I know and trust, Brian M. and Joanna T. gave rave reviews. Yes, the first thing you'll notice is it's inside a BP gas station. Next, you'll smell the smoke, then you'll see a pile of hardwood stacked outside. Upon entering you may see a line of people 30 deep or so, all the way to the back wall. I'm not kidding, so be prepared for this if you stop in during peak dinner hours on the weekend. What are ya hungry for,brisket? They got that. Pulled pork? That too. Chicken, sausage,ribs? yes, yep, you betcha! Those ribs have won multiple awards! Sounds great, huh? To avoid disappointment, I strongly suggest you go for lunch, especially on the weekend, because those award winning ribs have sold out as early as 5 p.m. My favorite is the chicken, it's so tender and juicy and has a great smoke flavor. Actually, all the meats have a great smoke flavor! The sides are pretty good too. My wife loves the corn bread! it's moist and sweet. My favorite is the ribs n beans, so good! I'm not much of a sauce fan when it comes to BBQ, but there are 3 different sauces available, and they're good, but not needed. The meats really stand on there own. The folks working at the BP have always been friendly, and helpful, and they keep the place clean. They supply the beverages and LD's has the eats, It's a great symbiotic relationship. I met Leon, the owner on one of our visits, and he truly is a super nice guy! His staff is very nice too. A lot of locals eat here, and many people drive a good distance as well. On one of our visits we saw Comedian Jim Gaffigan in line with his family. (I later found out that one of my friends went to high school with his wife!) Wow, in a gas station! But the aroma steers you in the right direction and the line is worth the wait! The ribs are my favorite and they serve the St Louis style ribs and the ribs are chunky and full of meat. The beef ribs are pretty impressive too. The sauce is good but not spicy enough for me and I think they have about 3 different sauces for you to try. The brisket my husband says is very good. I only wish they offered more side dishes. The corn bread is good, but I wish it wasn't so cold. The have a great coleslaw but I am not a fan of the potato salad. I wish they offered the mac and cheese as a side, but you have to order it as a dinner meal instead. Their beans are also good. Their bathrooms are clean for a gas station so that is also a nice perk. And you have to buy the drinks from the gas station but they offer huge sized cups for the pop. read more

This is our first time at LD's restaurant since he moved out of the Gas station. We liked the food prior to the opening of the new restaurant however not so much during this visit. The meats were extremely bland with only the smoked flavor. The tables only had 2 types of sauce even though more varieties are available for purchase. No other condiments including salt & pepper were available at the tables. We all had fountain Diet Pepsi's that were nearly void of the syrup component. The color was barely that of very weak tea. The corn bread was so cold it seemed to have come out of the refrigerator. The serving line varied from 5 to one at various times. It appears that after each item is made, that line server then goes to the back room. Line servers should remain on the line while runners bring product from the kitchen. The same applies to dining room cleanliness. Dedicated cleaners should work the dining areas only. We are hard pressed to recommend the restaurant based on these factors! read more

I have been coming to LDS for quite some time . Not frequently enough though but we chose them to cater our wedding and what a fantastic choice this was ! Everything was set up nice the food was hot and quality and quantity were over excellent . People were raving about how good the food was , and the next day for our church picnic they had something else catering and people said that ours was much better, LOL ! Well we thought so too in fact we used most of the leftovers at the picnic ! I cannot say thank you enough to your entire staff for making our day so special . Although I doubt it because he's just about the nicest guy you will ever meet! We live 50 miles away, but will find an excuse at the drop of a hat to trek down 43 just so we can stop a LD's! Apple picking season? Train museum visit? Lake Geneva day trip? All great excuses to stop here. Of all of the great meats here, I think the chicken is what sets LD's apart from anyplace else. Really good food. We have the full rack of ribs and beef brisket. There is a reason why everyone recommends the beef brisket; we highly recommend it too. The membrane had not been removed from the ribs, which is a faux pas from where I am from. Otherwise, we enjoyed them. The sides were good, but I'd prefer to get the meat by the pound and eat at home and prepare my own sides. Come early, as they run out of food quickly. They ran out of chicken, burnt ends, and rib tips while we were there. We would love to have tried hese things too. read more

My wife and I were out in the East Troy area and decided to make our first visit here for an early lunch. We arrived about 10:45 AM and although the posted hours say they open at 11:00, the door was open and there was a friendly and helpful girl ready to take our order. Nice. Orders quickly and correctly presented within just a couple minutes. Of note: when we left at about 11:20, there already a line of people ready to order. A good sign. Being a Wednesday, it was meatloaf day. After reading all the rave reviews on the meatloaf here on Yelp, we both ordered the plate special. Two absolutely huge slices of the loaf and two sides for $13.50. At first it seemed a little pricey, but when we saw the enormous size of the portion, no problem. We both left stuffed and took home enough for at least another full meal for both of us. And how did it taste? One word: WOW! We both loved it. Smokey, moist, tender, and full of bbq flavor. Just fantastic. Sides were great too. The beans in particular had a yummy smokey flavor. Well worth the drive to come out here again to try some of the other items. read more
