On one hand, the kitchen is producing some truly spectacular flavors, and the service was top-notch; on the other hand, one major dish was a massive disappointment. The Good: The meal started off incredibly strong. The chicken liver pâté and steak tartare were both world-class. If you go, do not miss the chicken skin butter--it is absolute genius. The onion tart was perfectly executed, and the shrimp entrée was another highlight of the night. Across the board, the food was delicious and the service was excellent--attentive, professional, and well-paced. The Not-So-Good: The experience hit a wall with the pork tomahawk. I was served a cut that was easily 80% solid fat. I've had many tomahawks before, but this was fattier than a slab of pork belly. What made it worse was the response when I pointed it out: the server told me "that's normally how it comes out." The restaurant is also extremely dark. While I appreciate a "moody" vibe, it's so dim that it felt like the lighting was hiding the fact that there was barely any meat on the bone. To their credit, the management did remove the charge for the dish, which I appreciated, but it still left a bit of a sour taste on an otherwise great night. Word of Advice: The staff should really warn guests before ordering that the pork tomahawk is an exceptionally fatty cut. If that's the "standard" for the kitchen, it shouldn't be a surprise when it arrives. Verdict: The appetizers and other entrées are 10/10. It has a cozy outdoor seating area, but if you're hoping for ocean views, you'll be out of luck. Now, onto the food! The French onion short rib is a must-try - it's tender and packed with flavor. And you absolutely have to try the chicken skin butter with their baguette. It's indulgent and unforgettable. The blue cheese mussels are different in a really good way; they offer a unique twist that's worth experiencing. Unfortunately, the ribeye was a letdown. Even with the sauce, it was pretty bland and didn't live up to expectations. On the bright side, the drinks are tasty. They might not be the most creative or crafty, but they're still good enough that I'd order them again. All in all, Le Coq has some high points and a lot of potential. My husband ordered the ribeye, which was listed on the menu as "MP" (market price), but the server never informed us of the actual price before ordering. When the dish arrived, the steak was just warm and came with no sides or accompaniments. The biggest shock came when we received the bill: the ribeye alone cost $232. For that price, we expected outstanding quality, proper temperature, and at the very least clear communication about the cost. Unfortunately, none of that happened. We sat at the bar and were served by Estaban, who made our drinks while chatting with us about the background of Le Coq and the cocktail menu. We had three drinks total, the Formula 1, an Old Fashioned, and then Esteban whipped up one on the spot which was the perfect way to end a Sunday night. We left wishing we had saved enough room in our appetites to try the Steak Frites and Onion Tart.
