We were a little unlucky on the weather on the day we decided to go here but it was still a great experience! We did a super yummy wine & food pairing. It was the perfect amount of food for a very light lunch and it paired really great with the wines. The wines are a bit more expensive here than at the other wineries we went to that day ($80 a bottle) but they are definitely worth it! Surprisingly, what seems like the flagship wines - Pentimento and Red Bat Cuvee - left a lot to be desired, tending to be overcome with red fruit notes or sharp on the palate. 2/5 - Service started off ok, but only became slower and slower over time. Despite, being at most, three simultaneous tables split with two servers. The server seemed more interested in talking with one of the tables instead of checking in on others. And even after requesting to join the membership, the server went back to chatting the same table, forgetting we even asked. Done waiting after 20-30 minutes, we simply paid and left. read more

Amazing place to stop. When we arrived we were both blown away by the view. The tasting is $25 but comes with mini bites of food to complement the wine. First off, Bill is amazing! We had so much fun wine tasting with him as he wanted us to tell him what we tasted in each one and how it changed as we ate the food. As he said "there's no wrong answer". Being in our seventies, my wife and I are just begining to venture out. We had loved going to wineries with chefs for a nice lunch along with a tasting in the past. We began last week with a winery, lunch spot, that we had always enjoy. We arrived to find servers not wearing masks, and approaching us laughing, etc. We, especally my wife who has asthma, were very uncomfortable. We decided to stay. The lunch was good but made us so uneasy and we looked forward to the conclusion. Today we decided to try the same thing at Le Couvier Winery, also in Paso Robles, where we had heard, not only great things about the wine and pairings, but also about how careful they are when protecting both their employees and their guests in these challenging times. We made an appointment. You wait in your car while they check you in. They are all wearing face coverings. You wear yours too until you arrive at your table. As we approached, we see that our table has been already set with tasting flights, an entree of pasta with mushroos, parmesan, and somthing buttery..... To my left were other small bites meant to pair with the other wines they had out for us (See pictures). My wife pointed out the table setting, which was nice china and the napkins and silverware were bound in a beaded flower or some such decoration. From our hill top table, we looked over to the east, with rolling hills, vineyards and walnut orchards. Now to the wine; the offerings bared the taste of their unique process of wild yeast, dry farming, and the west side vineyards from where they select their grapes. We learned this from our frantically enthusiastic server, David. He explained this to us from his stool placed about 10 feet away from us while still wearing a mask. He made us feel so special by taking great care of us and just one other table. The whole experience was so much more than we expected... A class act! This cute little winery is tucked away in the hills but so glad we made the trek. My friends and I decided to do the pairing with our tasting. Of all the wineries we tried on our trip (which was a lot!) this was our favorite. Their wine was fantastic and we ended up joining their wine club. It is a little on the pricey side. The pairing with the tasting was $25 but is waived if you buy a few bottles. The gal pouring for us was super knowledgeable and very friendly. We arrived on time at 11:25 for our 11:30 tasting and we were told that our server would be with us shortly as she was setting up our table, 15 minutes later and no apology for us waiting. The wine was good and the cheese pairing was good as well. EXCEPTIONAL WINES. Food and wine pairing for the tasting, unique in the Paso Robles area. Members get a good price break and free tastings. I cannot believe reviews stating that these wines were not memorable or special. I suspect what they really meant is they could not afford a Le Cuvier bottle of wine and were devastated by having to either buy a bottle or pay $15 per person for tasting. In Paso, bottomless, free wine tasting can be found at Tobin James. There, you can join the sloppy, drunk "patrons" from the wine buses and limos which stuff the parking lot. Dudes & dudettes, they will have some sugary and bubbly stuff for your cooler at bargain basement prices. 2009 Viognier We were blown away by this very different approach to Viognier. The skins were left on for two weeks and the wine comes out with a dark gold color. Yes, dark gold. The nose will make your mouth salivate with expectation of fresh stone and tropical fruit. The taste is complex, fruity (stone fruit like real tree-ripened apricots) and full mouth. Served room temp, it was undeniably the most memorable "white" wine I have ever drank. Served with the food pairing of spiced chicken, smoked mozzarella and grape tomato on a skewer, it was even better. $38 member price 2009 Pinot Noir This is not your weak, diluted, acidic, pansy PN. This is the William Randolph Hearst of PN - complete with heavy, fleshy swagger. Nose reminscient of a wet forest floor. Huge mouth, long finish, we just had to have more and more along with the goat & Cambozola cheese topped fig food pairing. $38 member price 2009 L'enfant du Pape A Rhone blend without the Rhone stink and acid. This has honey smoothness on the palate, but is a robust Rhone with good complexity. Very long finish without the flame throwing behavior of a typical "Rhone" blend. Served with green olives is a Catalonian marinade that featured Valencia orange, this was a delight to drink. $38 member price (are you seeing a trend here?) 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Dark, with huge notes of plum, cassis and plenty of #2 pencil shavings. Color was remarkable, nose was intoxicating, mid palate explodes with cassis and the finish is long on cedar, but very velvety. Paired with roast beef on crostini during the tasting, it promised many good times with quality meats in the future. Real value when compared to any Napa or Paso high quality cabs. Small price difference $39 member price. Based on the average (bad) practices found all over NAPA and SONOMA valleys, this is a friendly place with low prices. The quality and originality of these wines CANNOT BE FOUND ELSEWHERE in CA at these prices. Compared to Paso Robles practices, the tasting and the product cost are a bit steep, but one has to do something to discourage the riff-raff of which there are plenty around Paso wineries. Also, these folks go a long way to serve fantastic food pairings with their tasting. No dry crackers here. We arrived here a little late and about 45 min before closing but that in my opinion was more than enough time before closing. They were welcoming at first but I kept hearing little inside jokes that only I was aware of and the rest of my family wasn't which made me feel a little awkward and unwanted. Leah and kris were the ones helping us out. They were also the ones making comments to each other. A couple with a baby showed up literally like 25 min to closing and they look at each other and say something like "never fails right before 5" and a couple others that I don't remember exactly what they said but it was along the same lines of people showing up late and taking their time which I thought was pretty strange. As far as the wine and "food tasting" goes it was pretty good. The food tasting is literally like a 1-2 bite kind of thing but it was pretty neat since a lot of places don't do that. Expect the unexpected. One of the most creative wineries I've ever been to. Love how they take traditional offerings and twist it up with a different balance of varietals within a blend or they do a late harvest to change the sugar/alcohol ratio. I love their food pairings-- when you go for a tasting, you get to try really nice appetizers created just for the wines (not the other way around!) and it gives some fun ideas for entertaining at home. We only had enough time to go to one winery and after extensive yelping, this is what we decided on and it was definitely worth it--this winery is so beautiful! It's on top of a hill and has a beautiful view, which you can enjoy while sipping wine and relaxing in their adirondack chairs. We went on a weekday so we were the only ones there for our tasting and the woman who helped us was so friendly! She knew everything about the wines and the little bites of food they were paired with (which were all delicious). The wines themselves were very good--we liked the Cabernet Franc the most and ended up buying a bottle of it, which they collapsed the tasting fee into the purchase, so that was nice. After our tasting she told us we could stay on the property for as long as we like, and I if we weren't on a time crunch we probably would have--you could definitely spend an extremely relaxing afternoon here. If you're passing through Paso Robles and only have time for one or two wineries, I would suggest this one-you won't regret it. read more

Great wine, great food pairing with every taste (the cold soups kill us), fun atmosphere (shout out to Dave - glad to see you back!), best views in Paso (sorry, Daou), and a price point that matches the wine (sorry again, Daou). And we have been lucky to meet the original winemaker, John - semi-retired now (but you wouldn't know it). Such a passion and knowledge that he has passed on to the entire Paso region (many great wineries in the area have been influenced by him). We have been to over 100 wineries in the Central Coast, and we always make time every trip to visit our favorite - Le Cuvier! read more

This has got to be one of the best tasting room situations I have been in like forever. From the moment we arrived Scott Holt the tasting Room manager gave us the royal tour through a tasting flight of wines paired with food to see how the wine changes in character with food. They have a new chef who is working really hard at developing parings and it shows. Best part of the parings...their website has the recipes so you can duplicate at home! I wish I took notes of all we tasted and how they were paired. From memory there was a chardonnay done with first fermentation with the skins for a deep amber color in the finished wine. It was paired with a really yummy vichyssoise (chilled potato leek soup) that was simply divine together. Another fun combo was their pinot noir with a charred orange and celery salad on an endive leaf. A real surprise as you wouldn't normally think salad with a red but it worked with the smokey char. Next up was l'enfant du Pape, french for the Pope's baby as the wine is done in the Rhone style and it was paired with the sundried tomato goat cheese profiteroles. That was an awesome paring and I wanted the whole plate for myself! Next up was the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon paired with a sea salt cheddar. Again a terrific paring with a really awesome cab. Lastly was a malbec. It was the best malbec I've ever tasted which in itself is saying something as I find most too skunky and peppery to really enjoy. It was paired with a bomb seared pork belly with pomegranite reduction. All told this was a delightful experience. Made even better that our tasting fee was waived as we bought for home a Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Scott is a real gem and made the experience the best we've ever had. The folks in Napa and other local wineries could take lessons from this place on making you feel welcomed! read more

This place rocks! While visiting Paso Robles for the Healthy Community Passport fundraiser ( free tastings at 17 wineries for $35, a deal!), Le Cuvier should be a must stop and taste. As other Yelper's have noted, they pair food with their wines which gives an even better appreciation of their great wines. The Bistro Laurent paired the food for Saturday's tastings which was an extra treat. The wines are not cheap nor are they sold in stores. If you really want to drink Le Cuvier, join their wine club or join with a friend and split the case. David, the winemaker, makes only one white that I could tell, and the rest are all reds. They were completely sold of out of the chardonnay, but all the reds we tasted were delicious and complex. If my budget was more robust, I'd bought more bottles. Right now you taste their wines in the Quonset hut which is fun. A new tasting room is being built off-site so I don't know if they'll still do tastings at the vineyard which would be sad as the atmosphere is fun and offbeat. The restroom has taken graffiti to a new level and is fun. Indeed, the florescent markers are out for all to use. read more

When we were tasting off of the 46 in Paso someone at Rotta told me about Le Cuvier, her favorite winery in the area. I had mentioned that I like "Oakey" Chardonnays so she told me about Le Cuvier's chard. Told me it was the Oakiest that I would ever have so it was off to Le Cuvier as our next stop. The winery is different. It has a funky vibe to it and seems to be just a bit more "Hippie" than most of the others. The person who recommended it told the that the winermaker remindes her of San Francisco in the the 1970s. Like a few other places in Paso the wines are paired with food. But like I said this place is different, instead of cheese and salame, the wines are paired with different food. Like soup, a tiny little current scone, a cheese and chicken skewer. I liked the place, I liked food pairings and the wine was certainly unique. The "Oakey" Chardonnay was not oakey at all. While it sat in oak for four years, it was neutral oak that didn't provide the buttery flavor I was seeking. The wine however was unlike any chardonnay I had tasted before, the color was a deep, dark yelllow that almost reminded me of maple syrup. Of the wines I tasted it was my favorite. I wasn't the biggest fan of the other wines. Reminded me of one of the Santa Barbara wine makers who thinks more of his wine than the wine tasting public generally thinks. I felt this was reflected in the prices. I would guess that Le Cuvier's wines have some very faithful followers who share the taste that the winemaker so passionately puts into his wines. Probably not for everyone but I would be willing to bet that many, many people would think that he is doing it right while the main stream are taking short cuts. I would most certainly recommend Le Cuvier however. Just to get a fresh perspective and something different during your wine tasting experience. After all, wine tasting is an adventure, a search to broaden your wine horizon. When you find a wine that makes you think, makes you talk and wonder you are accomplishing something. Probably a bigger success that walking away with yet another bottle of 2009 Pinot, wouldn't you agree? read more

Probably our second favorite winery of the trip. First of all, the views are beautiful up here. Sorry if you are hoping to hear some super snobby wine advice read a different review. I am going to talk about my experience as a whole. Take a pic before you walk inside, its seriously so pretty you can see the whole city from up there. The tasting experience is great here, its $15 to taste but it does come with food pairings. I LOVE food pairings with wine and based on other reviews seems like they change it up so you won't try the same foods. Really interesting to see how the wine enhances certain foods. If you buy a bottle the tasting is waived, and the wines are SO delicious here you will probably end up buying a bottle. We got the Pinot Noir and let me just tell you it is not like your typical Pinot.. soooo delicious. It is a little pricier but the quality is definitely noticeable. Must stop here!! PS: for dog parents, they won't let you bring your dog but you can leash him in the shade right next to a water bowl and there is a large glass window so you can check on your baby if needed. #paranoidparent. read more

It's so easy to get winery points from me when you have a nice view. Being able to kick back, meet new people, drink wine, and take in the natural beauty of SLO county all at the same time?! Our driver (I love saying that) recommended Le Cuvier - it wasn't part of the exhaustive list I had prepared, but I'm flexible, I swear. We stopped in after Tolo and ohmygod, what amazing wines. The wines got better and better as we moved down the line - ending with the cab that was so delicious I had to "try" it again. After much discussion, I used my powers of persuasion (and company credit card) to convince Todd that we needed to join the the wine club. We have already opened a bottle of the Cab Franc, and though we might be better served to lay it down a few years (that's right, I'm high end now), we lack patience and self-control when it comes to wine. It was lovely, and I hadn't even been drinking excessively pre-bottle. I'm excited to see what the other bottles bring, as well as what is to come in the wine club. So we stumbled onto this winery by compete accident. On my way to Daou, a horrid experience btw, we saw this winding road and rolled the dice. We were greeted by the tasting room manager, Scott, at the door and he walked us from the parking lot through our entire tasting. Most times I have found tasting room personalities could be overbearing, but Scott handled my wife and I as if we were old friends. I can not actually stress how fantastic he was. The wines were paired with fabulous dishes. Our pallets exploded with a beet butter and the red Cabernet blend. I actually feel as if I'm rambling so I will cut to the chase.
