The restaurant is warm and cozy. I wouldn't want to eat in the front part because every space in this place is incredibly tiny. So, the front bar is packed and brushing up against tables. We ate in the middle room. Small. Cozy. But we did have someone from the side bar keep backing into our seats. The food is yummy. The duck ravioli is really good. The shrimp risotto was ok. It was done with wild rice which took away from the fluffy risotto texture. Beverages were nice and cold and dessert was really good. Service is fast. There are many Italian restaurants in Manhattan this one was not for me for many reasons. First the service was subpar. The server indifferent with a "what do you want attitude," not very polished to say the least nor attentive. The chicken piccata was basic and bland. No capers and not a very nuanced sauce on a bed of watery spinach. Certainly not inspiring. The restaurant itself inside is fine - but it was very noisy and hard to have a conversation. A Chelsea classic. It's heard to believe this gem is around more than 20 years and went here since its opening. I've attended work events here and had my dad's milestone birthday here. There is a $34 prix fix lunch special and it's fantastic. There is cool artwork on the walls and an urbane vibe. What an amazing place this is. The food was absolutely delicious, so much in fact that everyone was trying everyone else's food. I had the short rib which was melt in your mouth, others had spaghetti and meatballs, parpadelle ragu and the mussels. We had an assortment of appetizers.. all were delicious but the octopus was grilled to perfection. The ambiance was so nice.. mood lighting, subtle music, cozy interior and a decent amount of space between tables. The wine also really good and the service was on point. I highly recommend. Everything was excellent. Service was exquisite. I arrived early, and they seated me with no fuss. They offered me bread, which I had to refuse lest I'd have eaten a loaf and brought water. There was no rush when others arrived despite the place being full. Food was superb. I had eggplant rolatini and shrimp with zucchini. Both cooked just right and quite tasty. Others had figs with ricotta, which I tried and was also excellent. And someone had chicken parm, which they said was excellent. Let's start on a positive note. We had great service and loved the eggplant rollatini and the sardine special. Really different and delicious. The crab cakes were good, not great. Too much filling. Service was very attentive and well orchestrated. What caught us off guard is when we arrived for a 6:15 reservation and the place was hardly full. The hostess initially sat us way it the back, alone in a dark room without windows. We immediately ask to be seated in the front dining room and were accommodated with a sweet corner table. The setting was fine the place looked well appointed and clean. The service was attentive and well mannered. The food I ordered was terrible. I had the chicken parmesan, a basic dish that is normally a safe choice. Honestly it was the worst rendition I've ever had. The chicken was no more than an 1/8 of an inch thick and the texture was akin to chicken jerky. Another dish the Chix Picotta was 3 tiny pieces that were hard and rubbery and the sauce was empty of flavor. The ravioli was good. You can expect quality or quantity in a restaurant but you can't cheat on both. I was disappointed. read more

Went to La Zie last week with 2 friends. Ambiance pleasant. Service professional. Not busy at all on a weeknight. We shared 5 menu items. Started with a great Pear salad which had feta + pumpkin seeds - a light + lovely taste, 3 entrees - Bolognese rigatoni the pasta cooked al dente + a little peppery finish-really good, chicken piccata also nice flavor one friend thought there could have been more capers, I ordered the horseradish encrusted salmon, sadly my least favorite dish, for me not enough horseradish + the salmon was closer to medium when I asked for medium rare. A Wonderful we'll prepared Soufflé for dessert. While I've not had many this was just perfect for me. One odd note was I asked to get mashed potatoes with the salmon, she said something about a $2 charge The $2 charge was just for the substitution. I'd thought that was in addition to the zucchini vegetables which was not served but rather substituted for the potatoes. A bit disappointed (confusion on my part + the server). However when I asked for the vegetable too I was told there would be a $12 additional charge. No veggies for me that night, I thought that exorbitant. Otherwise out of 5 dishes a solid 4. read more

A group of us came here for friends anniversary. We were pleased that they gave us a back room to ourselves. Marina and the crew gave us excellent & professional service, taking care of everyone's requests. They provide the table with delicious bread and dishes of olive oil with garlic cloves. Also when asked, they provided butter. Folks had a variety of appetizers & pasta dishes, which they all said were delicious. and good size portions. This is good because the prices are on the upscale side. I, myself, just had the half lobster salad for an entrée. Although it didn't seem like a half of a lobster, I enjoyed it. Yesterday, 4 former college roommmates, all octogenerians (!) and friends for over 60 years gathered at the lovely Le Zie restaurant to reminisce, laugh and catch up. Le Zie staff was not only welcoming and solicitous, they wrangled canes, answered questions patiently and seemed to enjoy our little reunion. I love the beef carpaccio and my husband gets the calamari and it's perfect every time. The meatballs are hit or miss and last time the fries were soggy but they're usually good. We ended up having dinner here somewhat by accident when our intended dinner spot in the area ended up being unexpectedly closed tonight. It was a happy accident, because we had a good experience! My husband really enjoyed the branzino. It was a nice portion with a good side dish of veggies and potatoes. I had the kale salad and the gnocchi, which was homemade and tasty. While the place looks a little lived in and maybe could use a coat of paint or a bit of updating, it was cozy, and the service was friendly. Some of the reviews on here have come as a surprise to me. I've been here a couple of times during lunch hours when it's been quiet, so maybe it's different on busier times, but I've never had a bad moment at Le Zie. I've tried pasta from both the prix fixe menu and also the non-prix fixe menu and they're all wonderfully cooked. For me personally, it's a relaxing restaurant on a main avenue that provides a homey environment for me. The food is really yummy and the service is commendable. I also don't need personality with my wait staff. If you want that, I guess you can get yourself a table at the west village somewhere instead. read more

Let's do better: I guess its best to just show up and hope for the best. First off this review isn't as much about the food, but more about service piece of the service ticket. In the past three months, I made a reservation for table #22, and I thought the third attempt would be the charm. It wasn't. The table was seated and it was going to be a long wait - again. --Such a simple ask in a day when everything feels turned inside out. We were told both times that today was the hostess' first day (great excuse, right?) and they offered us another table (by the bus station) the first time, and (a middle table) the second. Mind you, the restaurant wasn't full either time, and any experienced floor manager or host could figure out how to manage this simple detail. The wheels came off after we were on our way to the bar to wait on that table. The "new" hostess checked me on my left arm in an attempt to express her anger and frustration for a mistake she made. Any bodily contact is never cool; its classless and considered a passive aggressive "bullying" act. So, not cool. After I had a reset, I went back to find the owner, Mr. Claudio Bonotto had totally lost control and any potential diffusing of the incident, and had digressed into an impossible resolution. In retrospect, I blame management. Bad hiring, Poor training, and the ability to lead the situation. An apology is all that was needed, but somehow, it all became our fault for the mishandling of the unfortunate situation. This falls on Claudio Bonotto. We are neighbors and this restaurant is an institution in our family. Years of dinners, work dinners, work lunches, long happy hours, board meeting dinners, celebrations, etc., and it all fell apart because of a simple ask--table 22. Additionally, when I realized that my request for an apology from the perpetrator wasn't going to happen, I turned and walked away, and they laughed. So, not cool. What happened to Le Zie? On the bright side of this is the bar and outside tables are nice, and that side of the business seems to appreciate loyalty. Come on, Claudio, there are many other places to get good Italian food and though I've always loved your porkchop entrée, Le Zie isn't the only place in the neighborhood. Loyalty, appreciation and care are all components that make good restaurants great. The hostess sets the tempo of the visit and when that falls apart what do you have? I'm sorry I wasn't able to make this clear to you in our chat. Telling me you were in a "no win" situation really speaks volumes to those of us who are your neighbors and loyal customers. Thank you for the many years of being a "class act" and we're choosing to remember the good times through photos, especially those had at #22.
