Some say this iconic eatery opened in 1932 and others say even earlier, but by all accounts Orange Garden is currently the oldest Chinese restaurant in Chicago. The distinctive Art Moderne façade (minus the neon chop suey sign now displayed inside Madame Zuzu's in Highland Park) and the interior, its hand-painted murals nearly obscured under a coat of yellowed shellac, remain virtually unaltered. A young, enthusiastic staff is in charge these days. They were attentive, communicative, and overall just delightful. In fact, we enjoyed a higher level of service here than in some of the popular high-end restaurants. The menu has been updated and the prices have risen (same as everywhere else), but the portions continue to be overly generous. Everything we ordered was tasty and impeccably well-prepared. We started with large bowls of aromatic hot & sour soup, followed by crispy overstuffed egg rolls. My entrée was mushroom chicken and my Missus had shrimp chow mein Cantonese style. Both dishes were freshly prepared and flavorful. We applaud the absence of gloppy, bland sauces that too many Chinese-American eateries ladle on. Orange Garden is a classic restaurant serving American Chinese food. You know, General Tso's, Mongolian Beef, chop suey, mu shoo, crab rangoon, and the like. It's been around since at least 1932, making it the oldest Chinese spot in the city. New ownership as of a few months ago. Prices have risen, but portions are substantial and everything is delicious, and the new owners have taken the freshness and quality to a higher level. Old ownership passed on the recipes; their classic overstuffed peanut egg rolls with homemade spicy mustard are still giant and delicious. Service is fast and friendly, and the new owners have cleaned and reorganized the dining room, making it a great place to eat in, too. Here's to another hundred years of Orange Garden! read more

Did a takeout from here on a Friday night. The oldest Chinese restaurant in Chicago, and not one person dining in. All takeout. Shame on us, seriously. The place was spacious and seems inviting yet it was still empty and a table full of takeout orders. The staff here was nice as well. We ordered their Orange Peel Chicken, Beef Chow Mein and Chicken Fried Rice. The orange chicken was good. It had a hint of spiciness but overall a flavorful dish. The chicken fried rice was good as well. A little dry but didn't have a strong dark soy sauce flavor to it which is always a good thing. The beef chow Mein was a no go. It's definitely not the chow Mein that we're used to with noodles. This was beef with vegetables in a thick sweet sauce. Definitely wouldn't order that again. Overall the food for the most part was good. And the prices were fare as well. Despite me feeling guilty for doing takeout, I still can't see myself dining in here. Wouldn't mind doing takeout from here again. Perhaps to try a few other dishes. read more

Ok... this is the oldest Chinese Restaurant in Chicago and may also have the worst food in the city. Let's start with the sauces: Egg roll sauce was that bright orange with consistency of water. General Tso's was bright red flavorless with same consistency. Hot mustard was good! Egg roll: nothing inside but cabbage & not cooked crispy. General Tso's Chicken not bad but the horrible sauce ruined it. Combo Fried Rice: fist thing I saw was a skrimp on top not deveined. Not appetizing and had a strange taste all around. The strangest thing was I ordered and told 15 minutes/ arrived 15 minutes later and home in 5 minutes and everything was barely warm?? They just cooked it!! Never again/ talk later read more

Ordered Mongolian Beef for delivery. This dish traditionally is beef & onions, & that's the way I remember it from this restaurant when I ordered it years ago. I know they are under new ownership, but in what universe are green peppers included in Mongolian Beef? I have NEVER seen this before, even when other restaurants throw in carrots, mushrooms, water chestnuts etc.... There were also only about 8 pieces of beef in my order. Because of the green peppers I had to throw the food out. Unfortunately I won't be trying Orange Garden again. A real shame. read more

Here's the story- I read all the reviews, I know it's one of the oldest is not the oldest Chinese restaurant in Chicago. I also heard rumblings a year or two ago that they were going to close, So, I wanted to come for fear of missing out. Nothing to miss here unfortunately. I love the look of the place, it is old-school Cantonese. Most of the places like this are long gone. The wonton soup was great. Everything else was a big miss. Egg roll- I read in some reviews that they have the best eggroll in town. Wrong. One of the worst. At first look signs were positive because it was the right color, right texture and huge. But upon the first bite, which by the way was not hot, I realized there was nothing in this thing except for cabbage. One tiny little piece of shrimp was buried in there, but that's it. No barbecue pork, just cabbage. Then I asked what was the most popular dish and she told me the general Tso's chicken. I usually never order a deep fried main dish, but she said it was great and a lot of the reviews said the same so I got it. When I tell you that I took one bite and left it there, telling the gods truth. First of all again, not hot, barely warm. Second, not crispy, but completely mushy. And finally, the sauce was nothing like a proper general tso's sauce. Also ordered the rib appetizer. Nice Gooey sauce, the ribs were decent. I would never order these again. And that's it. I left the general chicken on the table, and drove to Argyle Street and went to Hai Yen. I needed some nice vegetables and a few other things after eating some yucky Chinese food. This is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Chicago . It has been open since 1932 so they must be doing something right. I used to come here in the 80's when I lived closer to this neighborhood. I dined in today and it's exactly how I remembered it - delicious. I had the Mongolian beef, chicken and shrimp and it was great . The egg roll was great too. I tried this place for the first time, I usually get 2-3 dishes when trying a new restaurant. Every dish I bought I threw away. EVERYTHING was nasty!! The chicken in the sweet and sour chicken was doughy with no flavor and the sauce was white. The beef pepper steak had nooo onion only peppers and the beef fried rice was extremely mushy. All around excellent. It is the once ubiquitous Chinese-American restaurant in its classic form easily recognizable by its Art Deco design. The clean interior is traditional diner booths lit with recessed incandescence under vents, in black weathered and repaired leatherine. Broad dark wood frames trim frame the walls with laquired village scapes float on facing walls. Two sets of dragons trot above either end of the dining room over comfortable midcentury chairs at the plastique table-clothed 4 tops. The fare was commensurate with the decor: fresh ingredients including the fried skin of the egg rolls with a hint of peanut butter. The seafood, poultry, and beef held their distinct character under the unifying Szechuan gravy. The flavors were clear and pleasant. The fried rice could have doubled as dessert for those with a taste for it. The mustard was vaporous and expansive and nothing was over-salted. We have been going to Orange Garden for 40 years! The quality, tastiness, quantity, has all stayed the same. Excellent Chinese restaurant and a travel back in time in the inside dining. I ordered Kung Pao tofu & Sichuan vegetables... but that's not what I got. I got Kung Pao vegetables (nice enough flavor but almost no heat) and what I assume was sweet and sour tofu, since it had a rather sweet red sauce. It was pretty good, just not what I ordered. I am surprised this place doesn't have more stars. It's clearly a neighborhood favorite. In the two times I have had dinner at the restaurant, the phone was constantly ringing with take out orders ad well as long lines of delivery drivers waiting to pick up. The food here is classic Chinese American. The wontons are made in-house as well as the egg rolls. I later learned from one of the staff that the egg roll recipe has been the same for the last 30+ years. They also remind me of the ones my dad made for his restaurant. The decor looks like it has been stuck in time; that's the charm of the restaurant for me. The inner dining room looks like it's the original. However, most of it is used as the office and storage. The bathroom could use a little updating, though. The portions are huge, quality is good, and prices decent--so there's a lot of value. The shrimp and lobster sauce is old Hong Kong style, with bits of pork, egg and black beans in a brown sauce. Yum!! The lo mein noodles are tasty and not too oily like what one would find at many places. It actually reminds me of the kind my relatives would make at home. So good! Today Me and uncle drove from Itasca to chicago just to eat at my uncles favorite place, Orange Garden. It was rather cold inside the restaurant, service and food were mediocre at best. My combo fried rice had an overwhelming un-fresh shrimp taste that was beyond unusual for orange garden and My uncle ordered a lunch special Mongolian Beef consisting of at minimum 80% vegetables. When we advised food not tasting as usual management felt like we were trying to get free meal and treated us as such. We did not accept a free meal and left completely disappointed. Maybe it was just a fluke with the food and that's ok, it happens unfortunately we were not treated well at all. My apologies for no pictures and the negative review. My favorite local Chinese Restaurant Wing Ho closed down so have been struggling to find a good replacement. This palce is great! Old school , I ordered Won Ton Soup, Egg rolls, Crab Rangoon, Shrimp Chow Mein with crispy noodles, and Chicken Almond Din. All were excellently prepared, packed well and very tasty. It's quite the dilemma when my fiancé loves, loves, LOVES Chinese food. We headed to orange garden (relationships are about comprise, am I right?!), and I really wasn't expecting much. We got a couple of egg rolls, crab rangoon, broccoli chicken, and combination chow fun. First and foremost, portions are MASSIVE. When Sarah S. said her order lasted her four meals, believe it. I was completely stuffed about a 1/3 of the way through. Everything was a-okay, much to my pleasant surprise. It wasn't mind blowing by any means, but it was tolerable. Ordered carry out from here and was very disappointed. The sesame chicken arrived with a funky fake red color that was a bit off putting. But the worst part were the egg rolls. They were inedible because they were sitting in a pool of grease. One of the egg rolls had a small hole in it and when I tipped it, grease poured out of the hole. I realize they are supposed to be fried, but I have never had one actually sitting in a puddle of grease inside the paper. Gross though read more

Very Poor Customer Service. They are not accommodating for something as simple as wanting fried rice instead of white rice. I said I'm willing to pay the extra charge "no you can't get it what else you want." The food was not good worth the hassle even if you're craving Chinese Food.
