Leonard's is famous for a good reason! Got a single coconut haupia malasada to-go and really wished I got more (from us eating so well on our trip)! The parking lot was packed and there were people everywhere outside waiting for their orders to be filled. We were told to try the Malasadas, which is a sugary donut like pastry. I was very happy to visit Leonard's Bakery during my vacation on Oahu. I must say, the hype is real! I really enjoyed the malasadas here. I tried the original coated with sugar, as well as the haupia and macadamia filled ones. They were all absolutely delicious. It's best to eat them right away, or at least on the same day, as they don't taste as good later. I went on a Thursday afternoon, and the line wasn't too bad. However, since the malasadas are made fresh to order, I still waited about 20 minutes. The prices are very reasonable, with each malasada ranging from about $2 to $2.50, depending on whether you get the original or the filled variety. Customer service could use some improvement. The parking situation is not for the faint of heart. We were greeted with a large crowd of people standing outside in the packed little parking lot. There were no open parking spots, and there was no street parking close by. Luckily, someone pulled out just as we had circled around again. We decided to try 2 filled malasadas (custard and guava), a regular malasada, and a ling hui coated malasada. The only one I liked was the regular malasada. The filled ones were too sugary and tasted a bit artificial. The ling hui coated one just... did not taste like the ling hui sugar coating belonged on there. What incredible pillows of goodness! Our first visit we couldn't narrow down our choice in flavors so shared 4: cinnamon, custard, macadamia, and "guava." I use quotes with guava because while that's what we ordered it's not what we got, but we didn't find that out until later. Of course there's not a very good way of identifying the insides of a malasada from its outside, so each one was a pleasant surprise. Honestly, I think the basic cinnamon was my favorite, but they were all delicious. Best when they arrive fresh and hot, but also still good several hours later. Our second visit we ordered 3: guava, coconut, and lilikoi, which was their featured flavor. Again, all delicious (and this time we got our guava!). Really you can't go wrong with a soft and fluffy donut filled with a light custard. A couple notes: Expect a scene! This place is popular, but the line to order moves quickly. Then you'll stand around outside waiting for your order to come out. Don't expect a smile! These workers are efficient at moving the line. Have your order ready when you arrive at the register, and get to that pickup window promptly when you hear your number called. The parking lot is very tiny and chaotic! We preferred to park on the street which was easy and stress free. There's no discount for buying in bulk! I found it amusing that their signage spells out cost for single, 6-count, and dozen-count orders, but it's just straight math. $2 for 1, $12 for 6, and $24 for 12. One of my favorite places on the island! Theres a parking lot but please note that it can get right and spots are limited! Went at around 6:20am before my 8:15am flight and there were already people outside waiting for their orders! When I got inside, there were zero people in line and two staff peoples ready to assist! It was so fast and easy! Remember that there are two types of malasadas - the original and the puffs (filled). After you order, you wait outside and wait for your number to be called. Of course, it was so efficient and so fast. Unfortunately like many have noted, the malasadas don't do too well for hours on end back to the mainland, but I forced as much enjoyment as I could out of every bite! So do yourself a favor and make sure you enjoy some before you head back to the mainland! The inside of Leonard's is very clean, it's decorated with the simple items that they have for sale, and they have some beverages (cold and hot) available! Please note that if you're thinking about how much space you need in a luggage or carry on, I included some pics so you can see what size you'll need, depending on how many malasadas you decide to purchase. A malasada is a sweetened yeast dough, deep fried and then coated in sugar. They also offer malasadas with a filling. There is usually a line to get into their store, and after placing one's order there is a short wait outside where they call your number when it's ready. All orders are freshly prepared when you order and should be eaten immediately to fully appreciate how good they are Malasada ($1.85) - Soft and fluffy on the inside these warm malasadas tasted incredible and were melting in my mouth. I tried their original which had a sugar coating and the perfect amount of sweetness. Malasada Puffs Fillings ($2.25) - Filling options included custard, dobash (chocolate), haupia (coconut), macadamia nut, guava, and their featured flavor when I visited was ube. All of the fillings were good, although I felt the custard, haupia, and macadamia nut were so close in terms of taste and probably my favorites. The guava was unique with it's slightly tangy and fruity flavor. I appreciated that the filling had a thicker custard consistency and not a liquid one like one of the competitor shops. Overall I can see why Leonard's Bakery is such a popular spot to satisfy one's sweet tooth. Pricing is reasonable. When you see an establishment with a line out the door you know you have to try it. Do not get discouraged by the parking. Just don't make the mistake I did it is a 1 way parking lot. I got stuck with a person who couldn't pull out after coming in the wrong way. Parking moves quickly or you can park on the side street. A malasada is a traditional Portuguese donut (with no hole) left behind in Hawaii by Portuguese settlers in the early 1900's.
