I took a guided tour of Oahu and our guide suggested we stop at Leonard's Bakery to try their famous Malasada Doughnuts. The line was out the door so I decided to pass. At the end of the tour she passed the Leonard's truck giving me a chance to change my mind. I'm glad I did. I picked an assortment which included plain, chocolate, coconut and custard filled goodness. They were delivered to me hot and fresh. It was love at first bite. I'm ecstatic that there is a truck near the Waikele Outlets so that I can satisfy my malasada cravings without driving all the way to town. We drove out of the way to check out this spot, and then proceeded to wait in line for over half an hour for their famous malasadas (Hawaiian donuts). We ordered a box with different flavors of filling so we could try everything. I'm not a big donut person to begin with, but I can say that these weren't really worth the detour or wait. We came at just the right time, because the line got SO long right after we ordered. We love Leonard's, and the quality of malasadas doesn't slip at their truck. The girl taking our order looked so tired, and I felt so bad. There were only two people working the truck with orders piling up- one taking orders and handing them out, and another making the others. You always think in your mind that the brick and mortar store has better malasadas but they do not when it comes to Leonard's malasadas! We were out this way shopping at the Waikele outlets so what better way to pick up a snack and I'm glad we did! My hubby had a chocolate stuffed malasada and I selected the li Hing coated malasada. I would have preferred a guava or passion fruit stuffed one but they are limited in flavors on a food truck. That is the only drawback. I am pleased to report that our malasadas were really hot or freshly baked! Not squished in a box. Mine was so fresh and hot and airy with a hint of li Hing. It was delicious and I wish I had one now at home with coffee! I had a bite of my husbands chocolate and it was hot and gooey and yummy as well. Take me back to Hawaii!! read more

Drove by a weekday and after a kick hike up koko head there was hardly a line. Even though I know better, I went against the grain and ordered 2 chocolate, 2 haupia and 2 custard....DO NOT DO THAT. I should have ordered what I planned, which is custard and original with no sugar. Auntie makes it fresh to order and it's piping hot when you get the box of deliciousness. If you order less than 6, you do not get the signature pink box, you get it in the plain bag....so for the full effect, order at least 6. If you want to take them home with you on the mainland, just order them w/o sugar and they freeze well. I however, am never able to not eat it all....so all is usually gone before we head home. If you keep hearing about Leonard's Bakery from anyone who has recently visited Hawaii, it's because their malasadas are simply exquisite. There's a reason why the name Leonard's is so popular in Oahu! I always make sure to stop by whenever I'm in Oahu -- my go-to is the cinnamon malasada (cinnamon is a personal favorite flavor of mine, and Leonard's just nails the flavor right on the head)! I came here a little before 9 PM, which is around their closing time, and shockingly, there were still a lot of people waiting and ordering! However, I know how long the afternoon rush can get, and thankfully, we only waited about 10-15 minutes. I was just shocked at how many people were still ordering near closing time! Once we got our malasadas, I immediately chowed down on my cinnamon malasada and experienced pure bliss. They came out freshly heated from the oven, perfectly crispy, and sprinkled with just the right amount of cinnamon and sugar. I have never tried another dessert like this. I felt like this place was overrated but I appreciate them being open during covid and the staff being very sweet. We got iced lattes and they were pretty bitter/dark, so if you like yours creamy and sweet be prepared. The malasada puffs were good and warm but I wouldn't say I was amazed. The filling ratios were good for us if you like lots of filling and less dough! We also tried the hot dog and ham and cheese wraps, they were cold but filled our tummies. We arrived at 9:30 on a Sunday and but the time we got to the front all they had were malasadas and puffs and a couple of the ham and cheese/hot dog wraps. Leonard's. I just love malasadas and these are world renown. You can order the many different fillings as well as coatings. I really enjoy the no coating no filling once in awhile to keep the calorie intake down. The wonderfully crunchy exterior with the delightfully light pastry interior these are a must have. Last year during COVID19 lockdown there were no lines and made it just way to easy. I usually eat them as soon as possible can because that is when they are at their best. But they do hold up pretty well for 30 minutes or so if you have sufficient discipline not to eat them. Which always is my problem. I love Leonards and although I've left a glowing review for my most frequently visited mobile location in Hawaii Kai, I felt it necessary to give their flagship location some love too, it's a must visit whether you're a local or just traveling through. They have the best malasadas on the island and a variety of them too! My favorite is the custard filled, but there are truly so many options to choose from you might have to come back and try them all! Have been to the main one in Kapahulu, Jr's when it had a shop space in Waimalu, but for a food truck, gotta give it 5 stars. Saw that it was Malasada Day on the news aka Fat Tuesday. Texted hubs to please pick half a dozen up after his shift. He came home with a loaded familiar pink box. Hey, how come you bought a dozen? He replies, if I gotta stand in line for half an hour I'm not gonna get only 6. Makes sense. Over the years the sugary coating has included cinnamon and the flavored fillings has increased. He bought 6 plain and 6 custard. I asked him if he liked the custard and he said it's okay then in the next breath said there was also haupia and dobash. I have to say, if you haven't had one from there in a while, the warm, soft, sugary original Malasada is still the best to me. How do I know? Cuz I ate 1 of each, then walked back to the kitchen for another original. I know, I know. I'm an oinker... but it was just too delicious. It's the best fresh, eat it while it's still warm and the sugar hasn't melted yet and the shape is still puffy and roundish. Tasted one last week from N's @Z's and just can't compare with the larger, softer, sink your teeth in, get sugar on your lips and smile from Leonard's. Yum!
