Cross section of ube hopia. Satisfies my hopia cravings when I can't visit California or Binondo lol!
    Angel C.

This review is only for their ube hopia! Does Manny sell hopia baboy? I grew up in San Diego in the 90s when this one mom-and-pop Filipino bakery in National City, CA sold the best hopia baboy (pork) until they closed down. Then another mom-and-pop shoo in National City, Ching's Hopia opened up and is still going strong. Some time in between, my Lolo (grandpa) brought some hopia baboy straight from the Philippines...Eng Bee Tin brand hopia baboy, to be exact. Yes, it's the same famous family brand in Manila's Chinatown, Binondo. So yeah, hopia has been a childhood favorite of mine and Eng Bee Tin and Ching's have ruined hopia for me lol! You'll never see me buy pre-packaged, store-bought hopia! I missed out on Ching's during my last San Diego visit, so I really wanted to try Manny's Bakeshop's ube hopia. The interior is no frills and the displays never look packed in the afternoon. Maybe they have more selection in the morning? A bag of 11 pieces of ube hopia costs $5 flat. Minimum $10 purchase is required to pay by card, but luckily, I had enough cash with me. To my surprise, Manny's ube hopia were pretty good. They have faint ube flavor, but still flaky, pretty moist, and not too sweet. I saw someone commented on the lack of ube flavor, but I thought this was comparable to Ching's but slightly smaller. I've never tried Eng Bee Tin's ube hopia and I heard they invented ube hopia to satisfy the Filipino market? Maybe Eng Bee Tin's is bursting with flavor, but until I can somehow visit Manila Chinatown or San Diego, I'm content with Manny's ube hopia. Manny's also has a stall inside Waipahu Festival Marketplace. I've consistently seen hopia there as well.

Ube Hopia - not quite ube flavored

Confusing storefront used as the kitchen, rather than the store where most goods are sold. Very nice employee who was willing to help us find something, but unfortunately, they only had banana bread and pandesal available at the time. We were directed to visit the Manny's Bakeshop in Waipahu Festival Marketplace on Waipahu Depot St. When I asked what they had there (to be sure it was worth the drive), the guy provided a list of baked goods - some of which we did want to try. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived at the market roughly 10 mins after, only Hopia and white bread was left. :( Prices are very reasonable tho! I decided to grab a loaf of bread since the nice lady working was yelling out to try the bread (haha!) and one plastic baggy of Ube Hopia. The bread was delicious and soft, almost identical to the store bought Golden Coin brand. The Ube Hopia was lightly sweetened, crispy on the outside and "bready" on the inside. Wouldn't get it again because it was pretty dry and had no ube flavor whatsoever. You definitely wanna have a drink while eating the hopia... preferably a hot one to defuse the cotton mouth LOL! $5 Ube Hopia $5 White Bread Loaf Paid by credit card and didn't get any upcharge. Heads up, there's a $10 minimum for using card. Oh and parking SUCKS at the Waipahu Market.

This review is of my experience on Tuesday, July 5th. Brother wanted to try this bakery in the small strip mall where the old Highway Inn then Rainbow Drive In was located. Told him first, well I gotta go take blood test at the same lab where the old Big Way Waipahu (now called Waipahu Festival Marketplace) along with other shops share the same parking lot. I knew from reading briefly that Manny's had a small outlet selling goods inside of the Waipahu Festival, but both of us knows nothing would beat going to the bakery itself. Right??? After my blood test, we drove to the bakery and got there about 8:10am, I saw a sign perched on top of the orange safety cone. As I got out of the car stating to 'pardon the inconvenience as they are doing some remodeling'. Boy, as I walked up to the shop there is this older retired gentleman sitting outside fronting doors like he's security (lol). I was taken back as to what I saw... no one in front, the two display cases to the left and front were 'practically EMPTY' and no one acknowledging my presence. I could hear a lot of noise from workers in the back kitchen, so I kept saying out loudly HELLO ! HELLO ! Finally, a female in her mid/late 20s came out to the front and I asked where are the pastries? Is this all you have ? Looked to be a little pre-packaged small round pastries on only one shelf. Her reply: "Oh, you have to go to Waipahu Festival, the pastries are there...". 'What'? I told myself fuming... Why would the bakery not BE a bakery, but acting more like the production plant ? I told her I just left there (that parking lot where the blood test lab along with Waipahu Festival was located). Before I left, she did say they had in the back Spanish Rolls and Pan De Sal available, but because she said the pastries were at the other location I decided to just leave. Again... urghhh... is this bakery in this strip mall a production plant or a bakery that produces and SELLS ??? Drove back to the other location... found the stall where its outlet located (front/left of the building looking between the left entry/exit and the left side of the building). Ugh... disappointed ONCE AGAIN... ALL pre-packaged pastries except for the malasadas (priced at 60 each each) that were in a large plastic rectangular tray with cover (wonder how it breathes and not sweat) ? All on top of a long table... with the bakery signage stating what they sell (but not offer it today). I asked where are the cinnamon rolls --- she said, oh -- maybe tomorrow they make. Yes, just what I needed to hear... what I wanted to get, but didn't have. So, so disappointing... so I just chose the 'apple' manju packaged (6 @ $5) and the 5 malasadas (as some reviews talked about their malasadas) at $3. Paid straight $8 as I guess the taxes were already included in the price. Brother took same malasadas and a pre-packaged of 2 pieces pan de 'coco' as that is what the woman told him and a pre-packaged 1 piece ensaymada (btw, there are many spellings of this word). Dropped him off and I went home to eat my breakfast. Tried opening the 'apple' manju and saw the inside more with grated coconut... tasted much like coconut... was it mislabeled? Opened another one, and same thing... what? Anyway, not until I ate the 5th and 6th manju the next day (today) did I ever taste a 'hint' of apple (maybe a slight of applesauce)... I would call this package mislabeled. However, its taste was moist and *very good* for the price. As for the malasadas, wow they ARE small (well, what you suppose to expect for it being priced at 60 cents each) ? Initial bite --- ok, some fluff but then as the bite was complete, it became slightly dense ... nothing like malasadas... tastes just like a regular granulated white sugar donut to me... DO NOT BUY as I would say this is an insult to the Portuguese Malasadas. Brother had the same comment about the malasadas... bad ! His pan de 'coco' was actually pan de ube instead... But the lady told him that package was the coconut filled bun (come on woman --- get your act together !). He did like the enseymada (again, different ways of spelling this word) as it was 'fluffy, light as air... good". To close out this review, I would not return... nor definitely go to the bakery next to Waipahu Town Center as at that time of the day, it hardly had products to sell in its display cases. Then get disappointed again at their outlet as only certain pastries were available on this day and I don't like them pre-packaged as it sweats due to not being able to breathe ... Stick to Nanding's Bakery or Valerio's Bake Shop... they are WINNERS and will support those two unless Manny's Bake Shop corrects their own practices of operating a bakery. Hence, the two stars only...

Went to the shop to try their hopia but they were all out and told us to go to their shop in waipahu festival market. Went there, no seller around, but had a full display of baked goods. As we were figuring out what to buy, this lady behind the counter pops up from probably a tiny chair. Caught us off guard but she was so funny and sweet. We all laughed throughout the entire transaction! Hopias were amazingly good! Will be back for more hopias.

4/21/21-Manny's Bakeshop @ Windward Mall on Wednesday! Assortment of manju.Guava is king

4/21/21-Windward Mall farmers market Wednesday w/my two little grandsons! I just adore being with them! They call me "Grammy "!!!! I was craving something, but I didn't know what!!! Stepped up to the tent to oogle @ the pastries & my boys became quiet all of a sudden!!! U know why right?!? The eldest decided on "Hot Dog " manapua. I saw different flavors of "manju " ! Guava, blueberry, coconut, apple cinnamon & ube! I was just gonna get a few but saw the pricing & they sell it 5/$3 I think! Okie dokie! Let's just get all five! The best flavor was guava! So sweet, sticky & tart! The outside is like a pie crust ,the inside is like a pie filling. Many years ago,I introduced the apple manju to a colleague of mine who is from southern Florida. She loved it! She described it as a mini hand held pie! We tried everything from Manny's! Especially the Cream puffs! Ai sos! So delicious! Visit the the bakery because I haven't yet! They have a cafe too?!? Let me know Yelpers!

I have yet to go to the bakery that's located next to Highway Inn, at the front of the turn where you'd go to Longs and Shakey's pizza, but I tried Manny's bakery at their food stand at the Home and Garden show at NBC, and it's definitely something different that's worth a try: Hopia - 5 stars - For $1 they gave me 3 pieces of hopia, which has an outside crust equivalent to Char Hun Sut's Mai Tai siu. I really liked this dessert which had a nice flakey crust and lite sweet coconut taste inside. Small enough to pop into your mouth. Creme puff - 4 stars - for $1, I can only describe the creampuff with a filling that tasted the same as the topping of Liliha's cocopuff, but a little lighter. I also liked this dessert. Spanish rolls - I didn't get to eat this since hubby ate it before I could get to it. I need to stop by this bakery to see what other treats they have.

Glad they are in Windward Mall every Wednesdays and Sundays At Farmer's Market. Our favorite is the Ube Hopia which is 3pcs for $1. and oh I am so happy that they have "Pan De Coco" now coz it's my childhood favorite and I've been waiting for it soooo long... finally!

    Spanish rolls
    Lynne H.

Spanish rolls! The mere mention of them will stop me dead in my tracks.....so when I saw them at The Windward Farmers Market that's what I did. Not only did we get the Spanish rolls, but also the manapua and Portuguese sausage pastry. The Spanish rolls are filled in the middle with butter and sugar.....different from Nandings. Personally I like the Nandings Spanish rolls better when they are warm, I like Manny's better at room temp. My husband prefers Manny's Spanish rolls.....I think because the dough is so soft, sweet and not heavy at all. You can't go wrong with the manapua and Portuguese sausage pastry, not only because they taste great, but the price was only $1.00 each! Thank you Manny for coming to Kaneohe with your delicious pastry so I don't need to drive all the waaaay out to Waipahu ;) Yelp 365 Challenge: #23/365
