I honestly was very pleasantly surprised with the food here. I wasn't expecting much as it's old school so assumed it would have subpar food but everything was truly delicious. The vibe of the restaurant was old school but I loved it as these restaurants are getting harder and harder to come by. Had a lot of space and tables were well spaced so didn't feel like everyone is on top of each other. Wait staff was super attentive. As for the food, I started with the Leo's mussels in the spicy sauce. So good. Sauce was super flavorful. Mussels were served like you would eat an oyster. Loved that. And there was a ton! What a winner this place was. If I lived in hoboken it would become an easy go to spot! Our waitress was so nice and helpful and every part of the meal was fantastic. Their bread was freshly baked, the meatballs in red sauce were delicious, the clams oregenata were shucked fresh and nicely breaded. The chicken Milanese was our favorite entree the chicken cutlets were nice and crispy! The spinach carbonara was good but it was more like a vodka sauce than a carbonara but we enjoyed it anyways. An iconic Italian restaurant in Hoboken. While unassuming on the outside, this Sinatra-dedicated restaurant serves authentic Italian food in a cozy environment. Their food is delicious; however, the prices are a little more expensive for the amount of food (I had the Sinatra Gamberi). Their wines are full of flavor and they provide full glasses. But I will say that the service is impeccable. The staff are extraordinarily friendly, full of heart, and for some of the locals, know them by name. I surveyed the Hoboken Sailing Club members to see what people thought was the most Hoboken-y Italian restaurant in Hoboken because I had family coming in from California. Leo's was one of the top suggestions and it was exactly what we were looking for. The restaurant is bustling and has a welcoming, warm ambiance. There are string lights that adorn the old school tin ceiling and the bar has a nice energy to it. The food is your standard Italian fare. I got the eggplant parm with linguini and thought it was pretty solid. The service was fast and the staff is friendly. I had called a few days earlier to see if they took reservations. They do not so I asked about wait times and the helpful guy on the phone said "it depends on when you come in and how many in your party but we do have a full bar and fast turnover". He was right! No wait for us on a Friday night (part of five) and the food came out relatively quick. Let's just start with the fact that I grew up in the Chicago area in an Italian neighborhood. This is authentic, delicious Italian food. Served with love and abundant so that no one ever leaves the table hungry. Bread is not too crusty. Daily specials and the night we were there, it was halibut. Sooooooooooooo good. Chicken parm, rigatoni, gnocchi, and ravioli shared with plenty to take home. Service was outstanding, attentive and knowledgeable. They do not take reservations and it was really busy on a Friday night, but we had no wait. There is a small outdoor eating area when weather permits. As everywhere in Hoboken, parking can be an issue. Having dinner at Leo's is an absolute "MUST" when visiting Hoboken. read more

I wanted to order the Tri Gnocchi that comes with pesto, pomodoro, and alfredo sauce, but mentioned that I didn't like alfredo sauce. He said they could easily replace the alfredo with vodka sauce which was awesome! Food - Apps: Caprese Salad and Deep Fried Ravioli - the caprese salad was very fresh and tasty. I wish they had added some basil on top, but overall it was nice! The deep fried ravioli left much to be desired. It was very lightly fried and did not have the crunchy exterior that I was looking for. Would definitely skip the fried ravioli as an app. Main: Tri Gnocchi (sub Alfredo for Vodka sauce) - this was absolutely delicious!! The pesto sauce was perfectly herby and garlicky. The vodka sauce was creamy, but not too heavy. The pomodoro sauce provided an acidic balance to the other sauces. Would highly recommend this dish if you're craving multiple types of sauces! It pains me to write this but so very disappointed with our visit yesterday. Grew up going to Leo's and food, portions & pricing were always great. I totally understand prices need to go up, and we have no problem paying for something that we like and is made well, but no refills on fountain drinks (were not told this before & never knew this!) and the second refill of soda was a smaller glass?? My spinach ravioli (all time simple but delicious) were overcooked. My hubby had the veal, which wherever we go he compares to Leo's forktender cut veal, well this veal was not even thin/pounded?? VERY disappointing! My girlfriend had eggplant and asked for angel hair instead of the linguine, well angel hair came out in a separate bowl, it looked lost in the big size bowl, and her eggplant that was on the plate was in a square shape.... Since when is eggplant square?? Her husband had the rigatoni and short rib, it looked good. He said it was good. They gave him two huge pieces of the short rib which he said they probably could've put one and it would've been more than enough. For appetizers we had the tomato and mozzarella, the balsamic had a weird taste to it. We had the hot anti pasta platter, it was ok - (the eggplant rollatini was good) and 2 bar pies, which were as always amazingly delicious! I know it's a different clientele than it's been and they have to go with the times but it just didn't feel like the Leo's we knew and loved. Seems more focused on the people at the bar buying drinks than the people having the food that they once really loved. And I get money plays a huge factor, especially in this economy right now, but as much as they're focused on the bar, they should focus on how the food is coming out and being presented because it wasn't good. And maybe the newer crowd don't mind it, but us old Leo's fans, well we do. We didn't say anything and we didn't return anything as we just drove two hours from down the shore and were headed to the feast and our stop before is always to eat at Leo's and they were getting crowded. I finally made my way to Leo's last night after living in Hoboken for 8 years. There is a reason this restaurant has been around as long as it has - it has fantastic quality Italian food and a wonderful ambiance. Our waitress was attentive and very accommodating. Hoboken has no shortage of Italian food, but many of the newer age restaurants can be expensive and really lacking that authentic Italian American homeyness. Leo's is as authentic as it gets, fresh homemade bread served as soon as you sit, cozy bar and jukebox atmosphere in the front with more intimate dining in the back. Wait staff and bartenders are incredibly friendly. Food is delicious, affordable and generous. We ordered the meatballs to share, mussels diavolo, braised short rib tagliatelle and more. Everything was delicious with a serving size big enough to enjoy later on that week. There's a reason this place has been around for 85 years and it wouldn't surprise me if they made it 85 more at least. Will be coming back here a few times a month no doubt about it. read more

If you don't focus on how the pasta is cooked you don't care about much anything else... and its so easy to get it right! The red sauce is very tomato-ey, not cooked for any length of time so the acidity is still there...just in and out. Looking around, I noticed most were having Chicken Parm and other mixed pasta dishes..A lot of half full plates. Could be the large portions or the mushy pasta that can fill you quickly....really cant say. Of course anyone who frequents Leo's, I hoping, know they are not getting a high end Italian food experience and if its your first time you will now know what to expect...again its bar food. Had the Clams oreganata, the were good... would have been nice if the clams were basted at least once while cooking so the bread crumbs on top weren't so dry. Drank Cosmos. First one at the bar was good. After that each one was worse than the next. Brutal. A waitress, who was not ours, she tasted mine and immediately knew it was bad, was nice enough to exchange it for another...next one was better but still off. Portions are large. They do not take reservations, which is fine with me, but upon arriving and asking for a table for our party of 9, the hostess acted like it was huge inconvenience for her and we were bothering her. Once they got our table set up we had to wait a while for our server to take drink orders and the same happened when we were ready for our food orders. The bottle of water on the table were never refilled. I will say the mussels were delicious and the portion is huge. The fra diablo mussels were my favorite - i could've eaten the entire plate. For an entree I had the pesto pasta with chicken and goat cheese. The chicken was pretty dry but the pasta sauce was good and the goat cheese was a nice touch. Overall, I wouldn't eat here again. My family and I did a fun overnight staycation at the W hotel and ordered from Leo's through seamless delivery. The food arrived piping hot and overall, we thought it was solid Italian food that felt home cooked and deserving of why Leo's has been around for so long. The clams/shrimp/mussels in a garlic sauce appetizer was cooked to perfection, and the sauce was light and delicious. Add some of the complimentary bread that was added in, and it was as meal. The veal marsala was the winner to me! The marsala sauce was light (not heavy and creamy like the other Italian places) but with a incredibly strong and decadent marsala wine flavor. The shrimp fra diavolo was great, but SPICY! I often ordered fra diavolo at other places with the expectation that it will be spicy, as it should, but it never is; however, at Leo's they add in the red pepper and it's SPICY...maybe a little too spicy. The chicken milanese no doubt would've tasted better at the restaurant; it was soggy because of the yummy arugala salad (with onions, tomato, cheese and balsamic vinegar) on top, but the chicken was moist and super flavorful. Perhaps in the future they might consider packing the chicken and arugala salad separately; or request it that way. Unfortunately I checked the box on seamless to add utensils, but our delivery didn't arrive that way. The W hotel was kind enough to send plates and utensils up to our room. read more

I hate to be down on this spot--I (a) feel generally predisposed to like the classics/mainstays and (b) am mildly concerned that there might be "ramifications" for speaking out against such a classic Italian spot. Had a large family meal here (8 of us) and unfortunately the experience was chaotic and uneven, with incorrect and forgotten orders--One person's order was incorrect (wrong sauce), while another had their order completely forgotten, and got their food while the rest of us were having dessert. Our food arrived at incredibly inconsistent intervals throughout the meal, leaving people unsure if they should start eating, or wait for everyone's dish to arrive, per our varied personal etiquette standards--a Larry David-style debate ensued! Unfortunately, food and drink quality did not quite compensate for the disappointing service. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible (for those of us served correctly) but probably just 3-3.5 stars just on quality. My lobster ravioli was flavorful, though a bit lukewarm, and even this alcoholic thought it too heavy on the vodka in the sauce. Carbonara was a bit too heavy for my cousin as well. Parmigianas/traditional red tomato sauce was very popular with the kids. Kudos to the staff for acknowledging the service issues and sending us limoncello shots with our coffee. It was a nice gesture (though would have preferred a choice or something, or maybe the having the late entree knocked off the bill). May be contributed to the virus and short staff. But Leo's service was excellent and refreshing since moving here. The waiters were very friendly constantly asking us how the food was.
