Returned here yesterday for Greek fries and tahini dip (both for about $3.25. also, see prior review for my decription of both) , since I wasn't full after eating my Ginza Bairin tonkatsu sandwich. I have a feeling the guy behind the counter was Leo himself. Caucasian man, tall n' slender, wearing a long sleeve collared shirt and a full head of grey hair, in a middle comb. Cleft chin. As I was at the counter, I kept asking myself why this man looked so familiar. Then it came to me, "Hey man, anyone ever tell you that you look like Anthony Bourdain?" "I get that every day", he politely replied with an accent, counting my change and then handing it to me. This small stand is just outside Don Quijote and it's a pretty good place for its size. It's the second time I've been here and its no different from the first. The food is great. I just love the dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) with all that seasoned rice inside. The falafle plate was really good too with the hummus and pita bread. The hummus wasn't as tangy as I like it to be but it was ok. For the price of this plate I would like to see a little more hummus and replace the salad with baba ghanoush or some tabouli to match the amount of pita bread. I would suggest eating it there but then again... I was pressed for time so I had take out instead. I'm sure it'll taste better because my rice was cold in the dolmades when I got home. Honestly I dont think I'd wanna eat it there anyways because its too crowded and had some people having solo conversations. Customer service on both occasions was friendly. The wait is a little long but enjoying the food later pays off in the end. A-ok! Despite the dirty, awkward booth infront of Don Quijote, the grump working the front gave me a decent sized, decently tasty gyro. The pita was not the softest, nor the tastiest. But it was warmed and thick. Gyro meat was waaay salty! But had a little bit of spice and was portioned well (not generous). Two clean slices of small tomato and sprinkle of shredded lettuce garnished my sandwich, and the yogurt sauce was plentiful. The girl working was not friendly, and didn't even bother saying the price. I'm giving her the excuse that it was 30 mins to closing so she probably wanted to get out of her cubicle. I got the gyro sandwich with a small size of hummus and baklava to go. Everything was super yummy!! The baklava was delicious. This place will definitely be my new go-to lunch spot. Since I was hungry, I ordered a Gyro AND a 6 piece Flafael, (SP?) which are small patties made out of Garbanzo beans, and other good for you stuff. WOW. I was so full. What did it was the Gyro. It was much bigger than I expected. The meat and the bun were so good. The Flafael was had a bit of a salty taste, but it was good. We've ordered from them a couple of times. The food is tasty and the prices are fair, but I've dinged them a star because their portions are unpredictable. Last time we ordered the gyro was light on meat and the spanakopita was the size of a postage-stamp. This is a long overdue review but wanted to support small businesses who offer amazing food. I love the gyro value meal that comes with crinkle fries w/ seasoning and a canned drink. The portion is fairly large and proportionate. I would say it's more meat than veggies imo. The fries are my favorite with their garlic seasoning and order the tzatiki sauce to dip it with! My bf and I tried the gyro combo meal which comes with a gyro, seasoned garlic fries, and a drink (can of soda or juice). The gyro itself was pretty good and was filled with meat! I was full after eating it and haven't even touched the fries yet haha. The fries, although made to order and nice and crispy, I found to be too salty... But it was pretty good nonetheless. Outstanding customer service, great food at very reasonable price. I wanted gyros meat only as I had my own salad and bread. Called couple Mediterranean eateries several times, but no one picked up the calls. Then I called in this place. An extremely nice lady answered my call, and she assured me that they would be able to accommodate my order by portion. I went there next day, she remembered my phone inquiry. She demonstrated how much would be one portion and its price which was very helpful. Gyros were well seasoned and tasty, and Baklava was also so good. I will definitely try their plate next time. Ehh terrible ownership. Mediocre food to say the most. Don't waste your money here;( I don't need to go into detail but the son of the owner gets way too personal with comments on Yelp. " which I have deleted because they are so malicious" . It's disheartening when someone can't take constructive judgment/criticism... that's a red flag. If you look at the old reviews maybe the new ones too that the son always has something so hurtful to say. Never have I gone to such a business and have my opinion so ridiculed. If someone has that much time on their hands and then they should be able to execute superior product/expertise. Which they don't sadly they're option is more important than the consumer. I have not only had food poisoning from this location from a "Gyro" stack of meat that has been sitting out for numerous hours if not days. If they don't sell it that turns into tomorrow product. This little shop is located immediately outside of Don Q , super convienent after grocery shopping when you dont want to cook dinner! I always get the gyro sandwich $7 (cash only!). Although it appears on the smaller size, it definitely does the job and gets you full. I feel that the gyro is perfectly balanced in terms of meat/veggies/sauce ratio as I've been to others that try to compensate for one thing or another by covering everything with ridicoulous amounts of sauce. The combination here is incredibly delicious. There is usually a short wait for your food, so give yourself some extra time, as they usually only have one worker. However they are pretty efficient and will call out to you when the order is ready to go ! Definitely worth checking out if you like gyros! read more

Leo's Taverna Express is a stand-alone kiosk outside Don Quixote where all the other mini restaurants are. It is situated in front of a few benches and a larger, common seating area. Leo's Taverna is one of the closest to the Don Quixote entrance so if you have ever visited Don Quixote you have probably seen it. It closes at 8pm which is earlier than some of the other restaurants which close at about 9pm. As other reviewers have said Leo's is a one-man operation so if you arrived at about 30 minutes before closing you will be asked to wait a few minutes, perhaps five. The server I had was a handsome New Jersey-looking Greek fellow (I'm going to guess) who was very efficient and also polite. It seemed like he had many orders to fill. Like others I have seen Leo's Taverna many times, but I stopped by today for the first time because it was a chilly night and I wanted something hot to eat while I walked home. At first I had decided on a manapua at U-Choice In but decided to see how Leo's Taverna might stack up against food truck Gyros-N-Villains which is sometimes open down the road. In that spirit I ordered the $6.99 gyro. I don't eat Greek often so I can't say much about the flavors. I liked the tzatziki sauce which is kind of a yogurt lemon flavor, nice and bright. I generally don't find lamb flavorful, and I think the taste there was similar across Leo's Taverna, Gyros-N-Villain and Doner Shack in Chinatown. I think Leo's Tavern had the best bread of these--is it pita? This was large and fluffy and most importantly toasted for the benefit of my cold hands. Gyros-N-Villains was as warm (important!) but thinner and smaller, to memory. Portion size I would say Leo's Taverna is about in the middle of these two places. Smaller than Doner (I'm not even sure the Downtown Doner counts as a gyro, it was more of a wrap with similar ingredients and about $9) but larger than Gyros-N-Villains, though I am not sure the content size is more than Gyros-N-Villains as much as the bread is. I cannot give a proper estimate because I had some technical difficulties with the aluminum sleeve the Leo's Taverna wrap came in. The sleeve was deep so I didn't think to tear the wrapping. I instead pulled the gyro out and some of the contents stayed on the bottom. The sleeve was great to save those contents which I fished out later but kind of finicky otherwise. I will remember for next time. But long story short, I did not think my gyro was that full, but I ended up finding more of the filling later in the packaging so my conclusion is I don't quite know if Leo's Taverna gyro is packed or not. I am going to say Doner Shack does probably have more meat. Other notes on packaging: loved the small plastic bag and the napkin. Great touches. Leo's Taverna offers a very unique flavor in a row of Japanese restaurants and some basic local foods. I want to try again and am interested in the larger plates which seem reasonably priced at $9.99, which is also about standard for most of the plates at Don Quixote. Like another said the Leo's Taverna gyro offers a pleasant kind of satisfaction that is not really fullness, unless you look like one of those Japanese tourists who look like they don't each much anyway. It's kind of the equivalent of a small bento. For on the go it was tasty though I wish I had more. However many people I passed by seemed to stare at my food in envy so that was satisfying. If you are really hungry though do get something else. Many of the restaurants at Don Quixote do seem to offer large portions though I am doubtful about the tastes. Pleased with Leo's, recommend the gyro for the amazing bread and great sauce, would try more and hope I get more full next time. read more

It's a cash only business. I ordered the Gyro plate. It came with gyros, hummus, salad, rice and pita. The rice was hard and dry. The gyro meat was dry and needs more flavor. The salad was cut up romaine lettuce with dressing slathered all over it. The pita and hummus was ok. I'm not sure about the reviews. Did I order the wrong thing or was it an off day. Even in Hawaii, I'm probably gonna seek a spot that sells gyros. This place has your typical Greek food options. The gyro here ($6.15) has that thicker pita bread that I like. It's an extra $1.25 to add feta, which is pretty steep for what I'm used to seeing. My wallet probably didn't like it, but I added the cheese anyway because it rules. It's a good gyro with fresh lettuce, tomato, and onion. The meat (combination of lamb and beef) was seasoned nicely. The baklava ($1.85) was executed well overall. You can see the multiple layers of phyllo. This version was probably a bit on the sweet side for me. Nice and sticky. I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere. We visit here every now and again to cure our gyro cravings. It's quick and convenient for us since it's right around the corner from where we reside. All Greek food usually comes down to the tzatiki sauce to me. This place isn't too bad on that although I tend to think that they skimp a little on that. There's plenty of people to watch and you just sit outside with plenty other patrons at the rows of picnic tables. The birds could get on your nerves though. If you've ever tried Daphne's in California and enjoyed it, you'll like Leo's. They have a very similar menu. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. I lived with my friend from Greece for several years and she got me hooked on Greek cuisine. My favorite of all Grecian yumminess is spanakopita (spinach-feta pastry). Preparing spanakopita is a rather arduous process and I'd much rather come to Leo's to spare myself the grief of buttering layers of filo dough. Their tzatziki (garlic yogurt sauce) is so good! I was so mad at myself for only ordering one extra packet. If you have any human interaction planned within three days of eating here, ease up on the tzatziki because they use A LOT of garlic. I could easily go through 10 solo cups of the stuff, but I've refrained because I don't want to be a walking garlic glove. read more

This was the worst gyro I have ever had. I don't think they even make their own meat; it tastes like a generic kind you get frozen from a supplier. The beef and lamb combination was very salty, yet bland. The pita was not fresh and was barely heated up. i could go on, but I'll sum it up by saying that nothing about my gyro was good. The fries were very oily and limp, too. They had been fried for too short a period in oil that was too cold. The worst part was that I was the third person in line and the woman working the counter moved so much like a sloth that while I was waiting, my friend walked over to another stall, ordered and received a chicken katsu plate, walked back, and still had to stand in line with me for 10 minutes. Located in Don Quijote foodcourt (formerly Daiei, formerly Holiday Mart, etc.), its sign boasts that it's healthy. Well, I guess compared to KFC across the way it sure is! My Greek Omelet was yummy, but a little greasy, so not really healthy. Plus they serve fries with their value meal, though we were able to request a small salad instead at no extra charge. The workers were funny in that they seemed confused that we didn't want the fries. They said, "You know there's lettuce and tomato in the gyro, right?" Like why would we NOT want fries and have even MORE veggies?! Trying to lose weight here, people. We spent about $20 on the following: 1 gyro - tasted OK; kind of disappointed at the blandness of the meat 1 order hummus - was 4 stars; kind of gritty, with sprinklings of cumin & paprika or red pepper on top 1 "Greek Omelet" that was served on a pita to be eaten like a gyro.
