We were craving for some Italian food. We headed to our favorite restaurant Win-Spuntino located in the Market City Shopping Center. Located on the second floor overlooking Foodland Supermarket. Locally owned and operated. They were very busy but service was excellent as always. We ordered the Cheesy Garlic Bread with Salami. It comes with some of their Marinara sauce. Prepared fresh and served hot. Delicious . I had the Shrimp and Scallop Ala Bolla. Prepared with a Garlic and White Wine Sauce. Fresh Shrimps and Scallops served with Spaghetti and Sweet Peas . We also ordered the Chicken Saltimbocca. Chicken thighs covered with ham, cheese, and spinach over Linguine and the Scallops Milano ( Scallops prepared with Onions, Mushrooms, Spinach, and Bacon in a Garlic Butter White Wine Sauce). I got an unexpected opportunity to eat here last night. My flight to the islands was significantly delayed, so I missed my connections at HNL, had to unexpectedly overnight it and needed a dinner plan. The silver lining was my chance to eat at Win's! That I could have gone to any number of great local or tourist spots for a great meal but elected to go here should tell you something. I have been here several times since my original review. I can confidently say that everything I wrote 7 yrs ago still applies and is in full effect. Same place, modest decor, generous BYOB policy, awesome staff, and fantastic food. Given that, this place remains my one "don't miss" eatery when I am in Oahu. I'm still amazed that I have to travel over 4,000 miles from my home base to get a meal like this, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean no less! My tactical plan to approach a meal here is this. Go to their website and make an auto Google reservation. I did it from my flight when I realized I was spending the night in Honolulu without a plan. Arrive in the area early and stop at Fujioka's Wine Shop to get something awesome to drink with dinner. Have Fujioka's put the bottle in their Quick chiller for several minutes and it will be the perfect drinking temperature. Walk up the slope to the restaurant, sit at the table they have diligently set aside for your reservation, have them open your great bottle choice and be prepared to feed your face. On the short walk up from the wine shop, there will be no doubt about where you are going because you can smell the cooking garlic wafting all over the place drawing you in like a moth to flame! Years after my first discovery visit and this place still delivers an outstanding meal with one of the best clam sauce, linguine dishes around! It hasn't changed in 7 years and I hope it never does. If you are local, go support this community gem. If you are visiting, take a break from the tourist district food and go eat in the local neighborhood. They have a pretty decent offering size of pastas from pastas with seafood to chicken, vegetables, and more. The place is on the smaller side with a few tables inside. It has a pretty casual and clean feel with dark wood red and white plaid tables. The people working are nice and efficient with the orders. We got the pasta with meatballs and sausages, and the pasta with chicken and vegetables. The portions are quite large, and usually last us a couple of meals. The pastas were solid and a little on the sweeter side with the sauce. I prefer a bit more of a salty pasta. The pastas were about $20, which seemed to be a good value for the amount we received. As long as you avoid the tomato-based pasta dishes, this place is ok. Pros: large servings for the price, free BYOB (no corkage fee), good cook on the pasta. The clams diablo and Marsala chicken were pretty good, although both left a large puddle of oil behind. Cons: The chicken cacciatore was too sweet, but at least had a bit of spice to offset it. The lasagna was just gross. Sadly so Americanized. Real Italian lasagna consists of a bolognese sauce with almost no tomato in it. This tasted like a classic cheap grocery store jar of tomato sauce. It had to have at least half a cup of sugar in the single serving. The garlic bread and mozzarella sticks were unimpressive. Calamari was better than expected if you don't mind this style (large strips instead of the smaller squid head and rings). This is one of the family's favorite spots. Very family friendly, simple and quaint- casual dining location. We have dined in with a large group, many times and always receive great service. The menu is very large so we always have a hard time choosing what to try on each visit. Portions are super generous and we leave "fat and satisfied" and with leftovers for later! First of all clean, bright, small restaurant. For my fellow Christians who wants to support a Christian restaurant this is the place. Server and owner gave us service and it was great service no complains always checked on us. Food was wonderful, tasty and LARGE portions. We grew up in Kaimuki and this was a hidden gem then. Fast forward after living on the mainland for four years and recently moving back home, it is a treasure to see that this gem is STILL here! I love that it's casual and BYOB. They are located near Foodland in Market City. You have to go up the stairs since they are on the second floor. Prices are a little high, but it is enough to feed 2 people. I got the shrimp scampi. I was sadly disappointed. It was covered in garlic and the dish as a whole lacked flavor. I don't feel like garlic taste should be what the entire dish tastes like. There was no seasoning like salt. The shrimp was overcooked. My kids got chicken Alfredo that they enjoyed. Of course we had to order dessert, so I got the Lilikoi cheesecake and my husband got the tiramisu. Both were frozen. The first time I tried their pasta was by take-out. Normally I feel like take-out portions are smaller than dining in, but the portion was huge! The dish was shrimp and scallops with onions and pink sauce. The pasta was very flavorful, but I did feel that they could have added couple more scallops and shrimps for the price we paid. It came with 3 pcs of shrimp and 3 pieces of scallops. My friend had the bacon and onion pasta with butter wine sauce and his was very flavorful as well! The bacon brought out the flavors! I believe the next time I may order this dish. They do have a lot of selections to choose from, it can be overwhelming. We got a nice bottle of red wine from Foodland (BYOB) and they provided wine glasses and a corkscrew (I was surprised I had to ask the server for a corkscrew; obviously not a wine lover). We shared two dishes, one was the special that evening the lamb chops. The other was eggplant and chicken parm. The lamb was excellent!!! Chops were cooked perfectly medium as requested, there was 4 chops so we scarfed 2 each. The pasta that came on the side had a delicious marinara sauce; not just sauce but a wonderful assortment of chunky veggies on top. The eggplant & chicken parm was also great, we love eggplant so this dish was great. The eggplant wasn't soggy, it was perfectly breaded and cooked with the chicken. Great marinara with it, no chunky veggies but still awesome. This time we skipped the appetizers and shared a slice of cheesecake instead. Again, it's not fancy but who needs fancy when you feel wrapped in hospitality. We grabbed a corner table with the view of the parking lot. You would think the view is odd but there was a cool mauka breeze coming in and you couldn't hear the noise from the parking lot. It was actually pretty relaxing. The vibe might be casual, but the plates are impressive. It tasted like lots of love and care went into each culinary creation. The simple cheesy bread accompanied by homemade marinara was a great start. Then the Caprese salad...Oh, it was the BEST I ever had. So simple but splendidly put together. The perfect pinch of salt and pepper was added to each serving. It was a sign of bites to come. Or in this case, spoons! The Lobster bisque was both delicate and decadent. The sweet corn went perfectly with the richness of the lobster. And there was lobster in every. single. spoonful. We shared the special of the night. I don't write Yelp reviews often, but my experience at Win-Sputino was beyond horrifying--it was traumatizing. If you value your health, your dignity, or even your will to live, do not step foot into this so-called Italian restaurant. It started with a creamy seafood dish that I stupidly thought would be a "luxurious" treat on my Hawaiian vacation. Instead, it turned out to be pure poison on a plate. The sauce was a congealed, slimy mess, coating overcooked, rubbery chunks of seafood that tasted like they'd been dredged from the bottom of a sewer. There was this faint, rancid fishiness that lingered on my tongue--an ominous prelude to the nightmare that followed. Within hours, I was doubled over in pain, my stomach twisting like a wrung-out towel. Then the vomiting started. It wasn't just vomiting--it was an exorcism. Projectile, violent, and endless. I filled an entire bag with acidic, reeking vomit that splattered everywhere. The creamy seafood sludge came back up with a vengeance, its grotesque odor making me retch harder. Chunks of half-digested shellfish clawed their way up my throat, burning like battery acid. I couldn't stop. My body was purging everything it had ever consumed, or so it felt. My throat was raw, my stomach felt like it was tearing apart, and I was trembling so hard I couldn't stand. The smell of bile and rotting seafood clung to me, and no amount of water could wash it away. I spent hours hunched over the toilet, wishing for mercy. And for what? A dish that didn't even taste good. The sauce was heavy and overly salty, masking nothing but spoiled ingredients. It was like eating curdled cream mixed with week-old fish guts. Celebrating National Spaghetti Day has never been more pastable. Located in the Market City Shopping Center upper level right above Thai Issan Cuisine this hidden restaurant is unusually placed as it's not what you'd expect once you climb those stairs. Walking in you get the takeout only vibe seeing the soda machines and counter to pick/pay for your meal that's connected to the tiny kitchen. Though further in along the windows and in the back are a several tables simply deocrated with the classic red and white gingham pattern table cloth right then I knew I was ready for some spaghetti! The menu here is quite massive and they do prepare you for that along the stairwell as it's filled with images of the pasta and desserts...all are categorized by appetizer, house specials, pasta & sandwiches, chicken, and seafood it still doesn't make it any easier lol! I went with something I do see very often is the Chicken Puttanesca which has chicken, onions, capers, black olives and tomatoes all tossed in spaghetti with marinara sauce, and what a lovely flavorful bite it was very bold and zesty just a nice comforting bite. It was already pretty late about an hour before closing so sitting along the window gazing out the late night hustle was a bit relaxing thinking that I could do this more often. I did end up getting an eggplant parmesan sandwich for lunch the next day which does come with your choice of salad so I got the greek but unknowingly it was made tossed and luckily it was bagged cause the dressing went everywhere!
