Was here in November 2016 and absolutely adored this place. The waiters were nice and understanding that we were foreigners. Made small talk and have good suggestions. We came multiple times and always ordered from the menu du jour and were not disappointed! Their soups, salads and entrees are to die for! Would recommend to any tourist wanting an authentic taste of Paris. Several locals eat here too so it's not overrun by tourists which is a plus for me, I dislike going to tourist traps! This place is what I'd define as solid, home-cooked, fresh, traditional with a slight modern flair to bistro fare. We really enjoyed our meal here, even though we had to wait a good 45 minutes for a table. During that time, we got to see all the beautiful dishes coming out, and it gave us ideas on what to get! We ended up sharing a few plates, and they were all really good, with the exception of my pavé rumsteak. Although it had a wonderful flavor and seasoning, it was just a little on the tough side. Not so much that it was unbearable, but it could have been better. Husband's salmon was definitely the star of the night. Perfectly cooked a medium rare so that it flaked off easily and was moist when you bit into it. The sauce was amazing, and the frites and vegetables that came with it complemented it nicely. The boeuf bourguignon was mouthwatering tender, to which the monsieur told us "good choice," and had the perfect amount of sauce without being heavy. My soupe du jour was a courgette with roasted garlic on top and it was a satisfying start to our meal. All across the board, the portions were right on, and not too much and not too little. It could have been a little less for my tastes, but I left satisfied. :) To round out the meal, we shared a mousse au chocolat, which was tasty but nothing remarkable. Probably should have picked a different dessert. Final bill after 3 dishes, soupe, dessert, and a glass of wine came out to be around 75€. Service was excellent, given the chaos that was going on. The space is not big (typical in Paris, and specifically in the Marais neighborhood), but they turn over tables at a pretty good rate. Stop one of the Paris gastronomic food tour commenced at Les Philosophes. One of my bosses is a Parisian by heart and makes it out to France nearly every summer. Of the list of places he recommended, this one sounded the most intriguing. Luckily for us and our travel-weary bodies, it happened to be a two-minute walk from the apartment we were renting. Unluckily for us and our travel-weary feet, it also happened to be a 30 minute wait on a happening Thursday evening. We braved the wait and stuck it out, and boy, were we glad we did. Les Philosophes is a trendy cafe in the trendy Le Marais district, and the charming outside tables were filled with out-and-abouters relaxing the night away with their aperitifs. After a patient wait exploring the neighborhood and looking longingly at the menu, we were called in. The first meal in a foreign country is always the hardest, as we tried to decipher the menu without seeming overtly touristy. Luckily for us, we had a friendly waitstaff that was at least adequately happy to answer our questions. The waiter did look at me a little strangely when I ordered a rose (did I mean rouge, he wondered?), as I tried fruitlessly to explain it was for the ladies at the table. He ended up bringing the bottle over just to make sure I knew what the hell I was ordering. The prix fixe ranged from approximately 18-30 euro and had a decent selection; everyone at the table ordered from the starter + entree menu. The onion soup was by far the best I had during my vacation. Strange aside: French onion soup in France is apparently just called onion soup. Weird. I had been eyeing the beef bourguignon, but my friend, the Food Network addict, claimed that was the dish he had been waiting for since arriving in Europe. I deferred to him, and in the interest of diversity, picked the lamb. The beef was better; my friend said it was one of the best meals he had on the trip. The ladies ordered some sort of fish, both of which satisfied them. We finished the meal with a couple carafes of wine. I bludgeoned the French language in trying to ask the waiter's opinion on which wine was better; he accommodated and brought over two types of red for me to try. And after a couple days of us saying "benissimo!" after every Italian meal, we asked our waiter how to say that in French. He said something like "trainbend!" We said, "huh?" I think Paris, more than any other city I've visited, has the least reliable Yelp reviews. Maybe the four star rating reflects the large tourist customer base. It definitely does not deserve that rating. We came here out of desperation after being turned away at two other restaurants and not having enough cash for a nearby creperie. I saw that Les Philosphes had a vegetarian plate which is a rarity for bistros. I figured it would be a good way for my husband to try traditional French food without having to go to a second restaurant for my meal. I'll give credit where credit is due-- the duck confit was delicious according to my husband. The portion was a good size, and there was no gaminess in the meat. He also had a carrot soup which was pleasant but quite under seasoned. My vegetarian plate was described as barley and quinoa stuffed in a squash. What I got was a plate full of roasted and steamed veggies. It was the only vegetarian meal on the menu so I'm not sure why I got something so different. Some of the veggies were decent, but I was looking forward to the baguette and cheese back at our flat. Don't bother coming here if you want an authentic bistro experience. For a classic French bistro cuisine with friendly service in Le Marais, it's tough to beat Les Philosophes. Their terrasse with heat lamps makes it easier to eat outside and enjoy the show in the trendy and tres gay neighborhood. An annual trade show brings us back to Paris every Fall (we know, lucky us!), and we usually eat at Les Philosophes twice each visit. If you can, please order la tarte tatine tomato, a savory tomato tarte with a caramelized balsamic finish and small garnish salad ~ delicious! We have also enjoyed their confit du carnard, lamb nuggets with thyme and their pave de bouef. As others have mentioned, their creme caramel and iles flottantes for dessert rock; their mousse and cakes are only OK. We usually have ordered beers or pastis for a aperitif, and their serviceable house wines by the glass. Parisian tap water is certainly drinkable. Friendly service by the tenured waiters can be a bit direct when they are busy, but are quick to engage in conversations as time allows. Though service is included in the prices, they seem to remember when you have tipped a bit in the past. About 80 Euros for two for three course meal, an aperitif and a carafe of wine. Great food; hilariously bad service. My friend and I both had the 2-course lunch pre fixe. I went with the risotto entree and goat cheese for dessert, while my friend had the chilled cucumber soup (very Series of Unfortunate Events, no?) and cod entree. Her soup was really refreshing on such a hot day, and the fish was amazing. My risotto was also excellent and a hearty enough portion that we couldn't even finish it. Is it touristy? Yes. But does the food taste good? Yes! Les Philosophes is located on a quaint street corner in the Le Marais neighborhood. From Yelp, I was interested to try their French Onion Soup. Very good!! Generous portions of delicious, delicious cheese with slices of bread. The beef stock they use is very flavorful. This is the perfect thing on a cold Paris night. Definitely order the french onion soup if you're dining here. Another must try dish is their duck confit. Perfectly crispy skin. If we had time, we would come back to eat this meal again! We did the 35€ dinner meal. You get an appetizer, main dish, and a dessert. The french onion and duck confit is included in that. Because we went super late in the day, they didn't have the full selection of desserts. I ended up getting an apple tartin with vanilla ice cream. Not bad. The good - it was hearty, we had the creme brulee, fromage, onion soup, and steak. Note hearty not delicious. It was made well with that French specialty of balanced sauces through heat, but nothing to write home to mom about. The ingredients were definitely fresh (our hotel was ironically a block away and we saw the daily morning deliveries of fresh item - unlike in the States where they stock once or twice a week. The interesting - This place has surprisingly LARGE portions. Not America size large, but probably one step below it. So we were surprised how much food was put in front of us. We stopped by on a Saturday evening without a reservation and got seated immediately next door (which is connected to them and has the same menu). Service was excellent for us. Prompt and friendly, he even was kind enough to translate a few things for us to English. The food was mostly excellent -- the beets with egg appetizer was a wonderful fresh dish. Steak, duck and lamb were also expertly done. You could definitely taste the difference of fresh ingredients. We also loved desserts, particularly a great cheese plate, and creme brulee. The misses? I did an onion soup tour of sorts throughout my week in Paris. This was by far the best onion soup I've had. The flavors were great and it was very fresh. The rest of our meal was also delicious. My salmon was delicious but I wasn't crazy about the unseasoned somewhat lazy vegetables that came with it. I will say the vegetables didn't need much on the way of seasoning as they were very fresh, but the sides all seemed like an afterthought. Time out mag has this very french bistro on their list of top 13. Xavier Denamur's bistro stands out because of their mission to serve only 'le vrai fait maison' which is only organic, sustainable suppliers with everything made from scratch. It's a bustling bistro in the heart of busy Les Marais district but feels intimate and warm. The side walk seating is quintessentially Parisian and full even on a cold winter day. "La carte" or menu at Les Philosophes is pretty large and confusing since it offers all the versions of combinations, i.e, " a la carte, "plat du jour", "formule, etc. I decided to use my limited French and order to my best ability because my experience is you don't not want to ask a very busy French waiter to explain a two page menu for you in detail. For my "entrée" I started with a pate board which I take advantage of every time I visit Paris and am always surprised at the variations. For my "plat" I decided to order a very traditional dish of beef bourguignon and was surprised to see it come with a mound of fresh spinach. The homemade potato crisps were delicious. It was lighter than I expected from this dish but very flavorful. Paired with a glass of French wine and some crusty French bread it was perfect. My waiter managed a small smile when I asked for "beurre" but he was cordial throughout. I had to skip dessert because the Picasso Museum was awaiting but I will be back! The food at Les Philosophes was solid, not spectacular, but the service was excellent. Started with Chicken Liver Salad (Salade de foies de volaille) which was all right. I enjoyed the roasted lamb with herbs (Noisettes d'agneau grillées aux herbes) which was good. Beef bourguignon (Boeuf bourguignon d'Aubrac) was overcooked so it was a bit dry and tough. The highlight of the meal was dessert: Cheesecake was so light, simple, and fluffy, served with strawberry sauce. Service was excellent. Our waiter was helpful, professional, and extremely well-prepared. Halfway through dinner, I hadn't yet decided what I wanted for dessert -- when he realized that I was considering the cheesecake, he advised us that they might sell out and he set one aside for me. When we paid the bill, he already had our change in his pocket so he gave it to us immediately. The smooth, flawless service made our dining experience wonderful, even though the food was just so-so. We just relaxed, knowing that our waiter would take care of everything. The best thing about Les Philosophes is the French onion soup. Salads come in a close second! I had the beet salad with a poached egg followed by the beef bourgonion. The beet salad was the star and the beef bourgonion was good, but I've made better myself. It was pretty cool to try it while in France though. My father had the French Onion Soup followed by one of the larger salads. The soup is hefty sized with a lot of cheese and the salad was HUGE. He really liked both items. While in Paris, I wanted to make sure I got to sample some of the best French dishes in town. Le Marais seemed to have a lot of dining options and I decided to grab some dinner at Les Philosophes since it seemed to have the best boeuf bourguignon in the area. It was super crowded and when I asked for a table for one, they just stuck me at the end of a long table that already had a family group of like 8 people. It was super awkward and they were all speaking in French, probably wondering why the hell is this random guy sitting with them at their table. That kind of killed the dinner experience for me, so I just tried to focus on the food and get out of there as soon as possible. I ordered the beef bourguignon and French onion soup. French onion - Man, this was a gigantic bowl of soup. It came out piping hot and actually made me sweat profusely after eating it, purely from the temperature of it. The broth of the soup was super salty and had a bold onion flavor to it. It was topped with a huge layer of cheese and had a couple pieces of bread floating in it soaking up all that flavor. It was an excellent start to the meal. Beef bourguignon - This was a mixed plate of various veggies and meat. The beef was as tender as you can get and the sauce it came with was just great. It had a very intense, deep flavor from being braised in red wine, and the texture had a meaty thickness almost made it gravy like. There were carrots, broccoli, sauteed mushrooms, and fried sliced potatoes, which all paired great with that rich beef gravy. Overall, the food was pretty delicious, although the portion of actual beef in the beef bourguignon was a little on the small side. I have found three satisfactory ways to eat dinner in Paris. One is to go to a fabulous restaurant (Le Gaigne, I'm thinking of you)-- this may require research, a reservation, and/or a lot of money. Another is to buy bread, cheese, produce, wine and (if you like) meat from assorted shops throughout your neighborhood and consume them in your apartment. The third is to go to a cafe/brasserie, get a bustling table outside, a healthy carafe of house wine, and whatever looks good. We went to Les Philosophes to do the third and had a very satisfying meal. Our appetizer was a peerless tomato tarte tatine-- intensely sweet/tart carmelized tomatoes covered with a deliciously savory pastry crust. One of the big winners of our trip. Our main dishes were a little more disappointing; I had a chitterlings sausage that was good for what it was, but about halfway through eating it I started to find it off-putting. My wife had a nice little piece of duck, but it could have been better. If we'd gone back, I might have stuck to snacking. Okay... so the food was great! I loved the atmosphere and it seemed to be truly authentic French. However the service was the worst we had while in France. Everywhere else they were so pleasant and attentive. We also tried to a speak French and were very nice, but we walked in and the hostess who was about to go on break just waived us to a table. We sat for 10 minutes before being greeted or spoken too. The menu was given to us but the waiter rushed off before I could mention anything (particularly an allergy- they have a separate allergy menu by the way). We had no water at all. And our drinks did not arrive for almost 30 minutes. No one checked in on us and tables that arrived later were served bread and water almost immediately. The bread cutting area was next to our table and everytime they cut bread the crumbs would go in my wine or our drinks. Eventually I covered it with a napkin and was met with looks and snickers. Stopped in for lunch around 2:30 today and was surprised at the lack of a line outside. There were only 2 parties ahead of me waiting for a seat on the terrase. I was seated right by the door and the server came by with the menus soon after. I had a great view and could flag down the server pretty easily from there. I ordered the Beouf Grillée with the Bernaise sauce and a glass of red wine. I had ordered the steak 'a point' / medium, but it was more well done (barely any pink), thus I took a star away. The steak came with some fried slices of potatoes, steamed broccoli, and some mushrooms. I added some mustard for he Bernaise sauce and it gave it the little 'kick' I enjoy. All the veggies were great and I even enjoyed the steak with the 'kicked-up' Bernaise sauce. The wine was good as well. And, my server was very nice and attentive. The atmosphere was very nice here. It felt like a lovely Parisian bistro you would imagine would be on every corner of this magnificent city. And well...it is. This is mostly a spot for locals but the waiter we had spoke great English and helped us overcome language barriers we encountered with the menu. They also suggested a great bottle of red wine. It was also very cheap too at about €20. The food wasn't anything to write home about, however. They do have a chefs tasting menu you can order but it's very limited and they run out of it early in service. We came here twice and were not able to get it either time. The onion soup was tasty but everything else we ordered wasn't so memorable. Not bad by any means, though.The prices are average for Paris which really means it can be kind of spendy. This is a great place to people watch and drink wine on the patio though. I would also highly recommend making reservations. It gets quite busy. read more

Might not be a good idea to come here if you are either in a hurry or not French or have certain food requirements. Wait staff is extremely slow and help customers out of order. I really think they have no idea. If you do not speak French, they will look annoyed. I ordered the vegetarian main meal of the day. I am quite sure what I got had meat in it!!! I am so grossed out. :( I trusted that I got the chickpea dish, when I really tried scrutinizing my dish... It was kind of a mush of things... I noticed little strips of meat at the base of it. It was too late to ask, nor would the wait staff even care!!! I am grossed out, I don't even know what I ate. We also had soup of the day, which was zucchini. It was very good. Our last night in Paris and we came across Les Philosophes. In our travels, it was not the length of time during our vacation that mattered, it was the quality of that time spent. We met Monsieur Xavier Denamur and he welcomed our family as if we were old friends. In the brief period we were at his restaurant, M. Denamur told us jokes, stories, and shared his positive viewpoint on life. He also focused attention on our 2 children with a kind gift and even gave them a new liking for organic tomato juice. We had the boeuf bourguignon, tomato tartine, and amazing vegetables. My favorite was the espresso cake for dessert. My only regret is not knowing this location sooner so we could have visited again. "It is just onion soup if you're in France." M declared, as he watched me edit and label the photos on the interwebz. Il a raison. It wasn't French onion soup, the French was unnecessary. Yet I included it anyway, because it seemed incomplete without calling it French. An what-would-be-ordinary onion soup made better because of that pile of crusted bread with melted cheese floating on top. The cheese just whimpered and dissolved into a pile of delicious mess under the scorch from the boiler, bubbling and browning. Caramelized onion shreds were non-existent by this point, forming thin jello-like substance inside the beef broth, a deep golden-brown. M had the day's duck breast special with gratin dauphinois. The duck breast was slightly overcooked, to shame, while the potatoes were undercooked. It was lovely nonetheless, but we couldn't help but have much heightened expectation in Paris. My main course, on the other hand, was out of this world. A scrumptious piece of duck leg laid in my plate, crisp and golden. It came with a tiny ramekin of honey; poured on top of the leg and the golden liquid oozed slowly into the crevasses of the fried skin, giving the leg added sweetness and an almost nutty flavor. The skin crumbled like fall leaves at my bite, while the dark meat revealed itself in the most flavorful form, tender and juicy like harvest. It blew my tongue's mind. Even the salad and the fried potato slices were delicious. Simple, without many bells and whistles. But simple done well. I sucked the bones through of that duck leg, not exactly a very classy thing to do, especially in Paris. M watched me as I chowed down like a mountain lion, and could do nothing but sigh a very French sigh. But I simply didn't care. read more

Yelp has led me astray! The appetizer? The chicken was cold, the veggies were limp, the taste was wimpy (Asian chicken salad). My girlfriend got the tomato tarte, on recommendation from the waiter, and it came out salty, weird and awful. The main dishes? Really bad. The lamb was bland and boring. The beef bourginon was COLD and salty. This was one of those rare nights, where even the bread and drinks were disappointing. Oh, and the whole meal cost over 70 euros. We skipped dessert. Oh this place. I had so wanted to love it after visiting the bar next door, which has the same owner, and really digging it. Came here around 5:00 for a beer, some people watching and a snack. It's hard to eat during off hours in Paris, but there were many people around gorging so we ordered beers, french onion soup (they supposedly go through something like 200 kilos a day here, and a salami plate). Service was slow, as it is in most of Europe, which was fine. Beers and wine were moderately priced and they had a good selection which was a delightful surprise. The salami was also delicious, with an almost citrus taste too it. Something I've never had before but really enjoyed. And then there was the french onion soup. It was either 13 or 16 euros, was pretty drab and kind of cold. It was just totally lackluster. I had really hoped this place wasn't just for tourists, but it really seemed like it was. Ami took me here and she was right--a top notch Paris bistro, French food experience. Nice atmosphere, great service, English menu if you need it...I had the special-special, the starter of the day and the plat du jour, which was a small salad with fish croquettes followed by a hearty lamb shoulder braise. Excellent spot for breakfast and lunch (we had both). Repeatedly great service, excellent selection and everything we ordered was always tasty and fresh. The breakfast menu a bit confusing )need to order Multiple items for a breakfast with eggs and baked goods) but once we figured it out, we returned for breakfast twice. Lunch was unplanned (but kids really wanted to go back) and the food selection was great and accommodating kids requests very easy. read more

Overrated for what it is. Immediately upon entering, we were not greeted warmly and if at all. Farm to table "philosophy", but food didn't live up to it. No one working felt like really attending to us. Waiter was very rude - older gentleman. Tossed our menus at us, didn't fill us in on the daily specials which the menu was highly dependent on. We also asked for his recommendation on which red wine to order to which he blurted "I don't know, I don't drink wine" before proceeding to walk away. Laughable at best. What a way to begin our vacation. Food was ok, but nothing to write home about. Overpriced and also tossed on the table at us like dogs - had better pate at other establishments . Our favorite memory was the vinaigrette on the salad. The main problem was ultimately the waiter - terrible service = terrible experience. read more

Wow wow wow! Our server was Olivier and he was amazing! great sense of humor and had recommendations for everything and answers to all our questions. He even had pictures of the specials on his phone and showed them to us. Our favorites were the pork entree (app), onion soup, and creme brûlée. In addition, they pride themselves on cooking with all organic food and still are reasonably priced. If you are EVER planning on visiting Paris you MUST try Les Philosophes. read more
