Absolutely shocked at the negative reviews. We were just in Lewes visiting for a week and enjoyed it here. The ooey gooey was delicious. Very rich, but you don't need to eat it all at once. The Baker was so accommodating. Went above and beyond to explain how things were prepared. I was hoping that there was a dairy free option and she explained the different pastries and then went to say that if we let her know we're coming, she can make apple pastry without the extra bit of butter. This place has gone down hill in the last few years and it's sad to see. Service is slow and since most of the coffee is set to the side for you to get from a container this is unusual but it is the atmosphere that has suffered the most. Usually the locals using a place is a good sign but here it's a problem. In the week my wife and I recently spent in Lewes we came here several times. There are a few small tables for people to sit at but each day they were all occupied by locals, sitting one to a table taking up all the space while sitting in a circle and talking. They had coffees but were drinking them slowly passing the time and giving off a vibe of 'this is our town go away.' which we did. If this is what the owners want great but this is a town that thrives on tourism and if they can't do something to speed up their staff and get a better control of their space they may well find that visitors can find other places to go grab a morning cup. read more

I've been here dozens of times, but today was my last. We'd grab coffee here because it was close and the pastries were ok. The coffee always had a bitter, burned taste, the staff was never welcoming, and the flow/organization of customers was inefficient. Today was horrible. I ordered an iced latte that was undrinkable (and I am not picky!). I discreetly asked if it could be remade. I was given a shrug, told that's how the beans taste, if it was remade it would taste the same way. This place also charges about 4% to use a credit card. Although this is permitted by law in Delaware, it just seems shady- don't penalize the customer for shopping there. TL/DR: skip this place even though it's right in town, and take the 5 min car ride to anywhere else- unless you love bitter coffee. read more

While visiting family in Lewes, I stopped in here a few times in the morning. The first time I stopped in, there was a small line. It was really confusing and even overwhelming. Staff did not seem particularly personable. Not seating available currently inside, just a couple tables in front of the store outside. Walls lined product for sale. A whole section where tables would have been, is decorated with huge sacks of coffee beans and other items. Not much maneuverability inside and felt disorganized when waiting in line or waiting for your order. Even a challenge to find the menu to order from. I wasn't even sure whether they offered barista drinks. I walked out my first time. Next time, they were not as busy. Similar impressions the second time. When you walk in you are faced the baked goods counter and a order / cashier station. There is a sandwich menu posted high on the wall to the left of the cashier. There is a chalk board on the floor underneath the cashier station that lists type of coffee drinks available. To the right of the baked goods display case, on the floor, is another chalk board of available non-caffeine drinks. You really have to hunt around to see just what they offer. The tight space with dispersed menu signage really adds to ones confusion and makes it harder to order for those who are not local. Then, I didn't know where to stand while waiting for my order. Service was mixed. A couple times, staff was more perfunctory. Other visits, different servers were friendly and helpful. With all that said, their hot Belgian cocoa was wonderful! Rich, creamy and smooth. Their pain au chocolat did not skimp on the chocolate, inside and out. Chocolate drizzled over top of the buttery, flakey croissant like bread. As a non-resident and now resident, I'm shocked the owners don't take action on their consistent poor reviews over the years, including: 1) terrible coffee (aka dark water) / drink quality 2) terrible service and management (this started long before Corona). 3) terrible layout (get rid of all the junk and put some damn tables in there already) 4) terrible signage/ menu placement 5) mediocre pastries when you are lucky enough to get one 6) mediocre breakfast sandwiches, etc 7) extremely overpriced menu Like an idiot, I keep trying in hopes there has been some improvement. Can you say yummy ? What a cute little shop that is filled with bags and bags of coffee beans. The coffee had a unquie taste to it , the pastries were really good. I decided to get the pumpkin pastry which was out of this world, it was really really good. Everyone there was really nice and down to earth which you barely ever see anymore. Been here a few times and consistently underwhelming. I thought it was cool that it's a roastery but coffee is very mediocre. One time my husband asked for a cold brew and they said, "yea we got that" and served him an iced coffee. I know I take my coffee seriously but I would expect a coffee shop to know the difference between a cold brew vs iced coffee. Both ordered large Cafe Americanos and we were given a cup to "fill" with their coffees. Then they "added" steamed milk which was horrible. Never had an Americano "made" by a barista this way. This is the 2nd time we've experienced the same poor service and crappy coffee. I should have learned the 1st time. My wife threw away her Latte that time and I got rid of my regular coffee. I've been coming here for years. Today I'm here and I ordered 4 smoothies. The last one, just not getting made. I ask about it and the gentlemen tells me that he is working on it. He then proceeds to talk to customers, walk around and not finish the drink. Then I realize that he has tripled the order for other patrons who were much further behind me. Finally finishes and the apologizes (not genuinely) for making me wait. I just nod at him because I'm clearly annoyed. Such a shame. I LOVE a local coffee shops and being new to town, I'm excited to find the Lewes Bake Shoppe. I've been here several times since February, and had family and friend come too. Sadly, despite decent coffee, the service is below average. not friendly , and sometimes I wait 20 minutes for a very average latte. my milk is lukewarm ( coffee is self serve ) and lacking foam. Also, they use PLASTIC bags for EVERY individual order, even to go from the counter to the table. This is such a waste of plastic! Why not use waxy bags like other bakeries in this day and age or recycling and waste? I'd love to patronize my local business, and I know I speak for others. they should really work on their service. the baked goods are delicious. read more

We've been coming here for years because we love the coffee and pastries and we don't expect much since we're just grabbing coffee. However, recently we went to get a bunch of coffee for our family and the lady assisting us in the Penn State mask asked if we needed it ground or not. We told her yes and she had such a bad attitude the whole time. The machine had some issues while she was grounding the coffee which is fine but when we'd come back in to check the status of the beans a few minutes later, the lady would roll her eyes when updating us on the status and it was obvious she was not happy doing her job. We were waiting up to 30 minutes for them to ground the coffee which we have no problem with because shit happens, its all good, but I don't get why we were treated as if we made the employees do something super crazy when all we ask is for you to do your job. If you don't like your job, don't take it out on your customers. That's not really good for business as I'm sure you'd know by now by looking at the other reviews on here. It's not that hard to NOT be rude and have an attitude. Body language matters. Sorry that we enjoy your products and want to give you business. Next time, maybe try to check your attitude. read more

I mean, who doesn't want a warm delicious sticky bun at 7:30am. Walked over from the Dogfish in with our coffee in dogfish mugs, ordered a sticky bun, ate said sticky bun, and started Tuesday off right. Lewes Bake Shoppe is a cute little coffee shop in the heart of Lewes. That said, I feel like the name might be a little misleading... in my experience, the real reason to come here is the coffee. The coffee is good and fresh, and there is a wide selection of coffees and coffee drinks available. As for the food, it was fine. My boyfriend got a breakfast sandwich that he described as "average," and I got a cinnamon bun that was not what I was expecting. I love cinnamon buns, but in my book, a cinnamon bun is supposed to be "dry" (hardened icing) whereas a sticky bun is supposed to be "wet." My cinnamon bun had this really really sweet, drippy icing, which I wasn't a huge fan of and which I've never experienced in a cinnamon bun. Then again, if I were a candy-loving small child, I would have felt like I'd hit the jackpot eating that much sugar for breakfast. It was still good, it was just way too sweet for me. read more

I was not aware that there is now a "small business charge" being added to bills, not even sure it is legal but there it was, .67 added to my bill and when I asked what is the .67 for the cashier explained it was the "small business charge". I paid the bill and decided that's it, I hate SNEAKY, just put up a sign and let me know you are doing this then I can make a decision if I will order, that's all, just tell me! We are in COVID world now, people need to take precautions and small businesses need to use common sense. Imagine my surprise when I ordered an iced tea, it was self serve, ok, I can do that but eww who was touching that pitcher before me? I needed lemon and was told it was in the fridge the drinks are stored, yup, I found it there, in an uncovered Styrofoam cup with no fork so when I asked for one I got the confused look from the bakery staff...WTF is happening, did you people not get the memo? If you didn't care about the safety and welfare of your customers before then really, doesn't COVID mean anything to you? Come on people! We put our lives in your hands when we purchase from you, can you at least care, just a little?! Bakery items were just so-so, my group shared a sticky mess called the Ooey Gooey that ended up in the trash, sticky, overly sweet and just not worth effort. My friends had a breakfast sandwich, 2 of them split one sandwich and 1/2 of the mess did not get eaten. Long story short? SUNDAY MORNING 9::15am 11/28/2021: The breakfast sandwiches were nothing special the bake goods ie muffins and cinnamon rolls are okay they were just much too hard and dry for my taste. What made this place a nightmare was the nasty attitude of the cashier that appeared to have fallen-off the wrong side of the bed. Recently, I have been told how amazing this place is, so I thought I would give it another shot (went here a few years back, pre-covid). So, my friend and I visited today. I got a coffee and chocolate croissant; my friend got a chai latte and a gluten-free muffin. I like strong coffee, but the coffee was so-so and lukewarm. The chocolate croissant was very good, but small. My friend's drink was delicious; muffin so-so. While the food and drink were okay, the service was horrible. The woman was so surly and unpleasant. I had to ask where everything was, and when asked about seating, was rudely told - outside. The store is a mess, btw. My friend and I looked at each other outside, at the tables, and laughed at the rude woman. My friend suggested she was having a bad day, and another customer piped up, "or it's her personality"! We stopped at the Lewes Bake Shoppe for a quick lunch, and the barista suggested their infused lemonades and the turkey with Brie wrap. Both were delicious! My husband ordered the chicken bacon wrap and had the blueberry infused lemonade. I had a green tea blended frozen drink with the turkey/Brie wrap. When our beverages arrived, they had fun little umbrellas- great for a quaint little beach town. I wish I would have read the reviews before going there. The aroma of coffee was delicious when we walked by the day before so we decided to try it the next morning. We were very disappointed. The two women were very unfriendly. I was expecting a pleasant experience from a quaint little place. As mentioned signage is confusing and lacking. No prices on anything so its anyone's guess what you are being charged for. Cappuccinos were ok but my husband complained of too much foam. We were both disappointed in the pastries we got. The spinach feta croissant was served cold. Not even asked to be warmed up. I didn't care for it so I asked for a bag to take it to my daughter if she liked it and was given a clear plastic bag with a twist tie. I had to go walking around town with it like that. Very awkward. My husband's chocolate croissant was just average. At least Dunkin warms them up. An older couple came in and asked if they had any donuts. The answer was just a simple rude NO. Not No, I'm sorry. It was like why did you come in and bother me for donuts. Overall very expensive for two small cappuccinos and 2 pastries for $20. I ordered a quiche from the menu (which said with salad or fruit). I received my quiche broken in pieces, no salad, no fruit. I questioned this and rudely told this is the way it is - no sides today and the broccoli is heavy so the quiche broke ... basically too bad. I had high hopes but won't be back. I spoke with the manager who was not much more helpful or friendly. I requested a refund and was told no one knew how to process a credit card refund (huh?), and was given cash back. We used to love coming here for the great variety of whole bean coffee flavors... but sadly this will be our last visit here. Bought 5 bag of whole bean coffee @$56 and had the "nerve" to ask for a bag to carry them out since we were planning to continue shopping locally before retiring to our car. Appreciate that plastic bags are an environmental issue, but normally stores have paper bags available for larger purchases for a small fee. The lack of bag wasn't the issue, rather the attitude of the counter person. In a very condescending tone, she 'offered' to put the coffee bags in individual pastry bags. When I said that doesn't really help, and asked if they have any type of bag to hold all 5 bags, she was just plan unprofessional and condescending like expecting a shop to have a bag available for multi-item purchases is a problem.
