I've been going to Lydia for 5 years now and she is THE BEST colorist in the city, probably the country as well. I'm very picky about my highlights and she does them perfectly. She is truly unmatched in her attention to detail. Each highlight is delicately crafted and blended in perfectly. You could probably get away with saying they are completely natural. I went in as a haircut model for one of the up and coming stylists. While the shampoo was great....nothing else was.BTW, I was introduced to Louis Licari himself, who, of course, never checked the end result of the model cut. I came in with mainly one length (between chin and shoulders) I left with choppy bangs and one side that has way more layers than the other. I also firmly said, please keep as much length as you can. While I understand the need to flat iron everything so that the instructor(s) can see the cut, I have naturally wavy hair the minute any moisture hits it. I never flat iron or even blow dry my own hair. The stylist had done numerous things incorrectly and the instructors were quick to say that but....they didn't stick around to make sure that he knew how to correct it. Now I have bangs that are as heavy as a curtain and layers on one side that don't match the other. It is way shorter than I wanted. I left without any of the instructors EVER asking me what I thought of the cut. Only go here if you are doing something very simple to your hair and you watch them like a hawk. The atmosphere is also loud and unprofessional. While I was there, someone from LX NY was filming a blow-dry lesson or something. Yes, my hair will grow back but....stay away from this salon. i have been getting my hair cut & styled here for about a year. What amazes me each time is how ON TIME the salon is and, in particular, Nicole, who cuts my hair. She'S amazing and you don't spend time waiting for any services. All the people there are so pleasant to deal with and there is never attitude, which is a big part of the reason I switched from the other top salon I had gone to for many years. I was visiting NYC and decided to use some free time to get a much needed haircut. I have long hair and it was desperate for some TLC. I was referred to Cutler by a friend who lives in the city. I called and was given an appointment within an hour! The salon is clean and the front desk staff was friendly. They had a coat check attendant and dressing rooms. I was given an appointment with Ryan. He is fantastic & very personable. I told him I like my hair long so he suggested he add layers into the length to get rid of the look of heaviness & weight. I have never done this before, but I felt I just had to. After reading such wonderful reviews about this salon and watching the amazing make-overs on the Today show, I decided that I would treat myself to an appointment for my birthday. I absolutely hated this place. I had an appointment with Kathy, Louis Licari's second in command and color director. I was told she has been there 25 years. I thought I would really get some expert advise and a great color. The color is nothing to get excited about. She only colored the top of my hair and did not touch the back. The top is now so much lighter than the back. She decided I only needed a root touch up with a few highlights. The thing that upset me the most was there was a woman in the chair next to me getting her hair colored also. I watched Kathy, the colorist, apply hair color/conditioner to this woman's hair, then she wheeled the tray over to me and applied the same thing to my hair using the same bowl of color/conditioner with the same brush/spatula. I was shocked and speechless. I have never experienced this before. I certainly never expected this at such an exclusive salon. I would think that someone with over 25 years experience would know that you should not be using the same brushes, spatulas, color, etc from client to client. After my hair color was complete and her assistant washed the color out of my hair, I went downstairs to have my hair cut and dried. I had to sit and watch the girl I had an appointment with cut and dry 3 other clients before she got to me. She said there was a mess up in the scheduling. The girl trimming and drying my hair was completely rushed. She barely finished drying my hair and grabbed her coat and left for lunch. My hair was full of static and lots of fly aways. I felt it was left unfinished. I was so disappointed. I went to the desk to pay for all this expert treatment and the cost for Kathy to color my hair with the shared hair product was $315.00. She probably spent less than 10 minutes with me total. It was also another $130.00 for the girl who trimmed and blow dried my hair. With tax, this came to $465.00. At the desk they have tip envelopes and I was told that Kathy usually gets at least a 20% tip and the girl that cuts and blow dries gets the same and I should also tip Kathy's assistant. So another $120.00 later my grand total was $585.00 for a very sub-standard and disappointing experience at Louis Licari. I would really think twice about spending that kind of money, especially in this economy, at this salon. It was truly NOT worth it. read more

I live in California and was in NY for a business trip. I booked a color and cut at Licari for 7:30 on a Friday morning. Yolanda did my color which I LOVE - I think it is the best color job I have ever had - she was so thorough. She also guided me away from what would have been too dark and made thoughtful recommendations as we discussed what I wanted to have done with my hair color. I was then sent over to Devi Limbu for the cut - I sat and waited for 30 minutes (they assured me this wouldn't happen when I booked the appointment) with wet hair in the freezing upstairs cutting area. It appeared the client before me was having Devi redo a few things on a very short cut. When she finally began my cut, she asked how much I wanted cut off and did I just want the layers trimmed? I had brought two magazines with ideas on how I wanted it cut and blown out but...she didn't even ask. She was clearly in a big hurry as she quickly cut and began blowing out my hair. She had an assistant help her blow dry - so there was little thought to any actual STYLE to my blow out, just get it dry as quick as possible. In fact, I thought they were just pausing for a moment and I leaned down to get a tissue out of my purse and when I sat back up she was leaving and thanking me for coming. 25 minutes after I got in the chair, I was cut and blown dry and shown the door. I had flyaways all over my head and probably looked more disheveled than when I walked in the door at 7:30 AM. I would give Yolanda 5 stars and Devi none. i went in to louis licari for a makeover for a popular morning tv show a few years ago. i thought that since this salon is reputable that they will do a fabulous job. boy was i WRONG! they are terrible at color and cut! they said they were going to make me "honey blonde" but they made my hair WHITE. they also FRIED MY HAIR AND SCALP. my hair was soo dry for weeks afterward and stunk like peroxide. it was the most disgusting salon experience ive had in my LIFE. then they chopped it up completely. they have NO clue what they're doing. save your money and STAY AWAY!!! read more

I have gone to Breno a few times now for a haircut. His haircuts are on point. I usually have an idea of what I am looking for but always ask him his thoughts. He executes exactly what we discuss and his haircuts always grow out nicely. My hair is medium length and very thin so most people just want to cut my hair short but he gives me a haircut that allows me to have some length and still make it look fuller. Don't waste your time or money. Made a first time appointment based in a recommendation that they are "top for color" .. Had a 10:30am appointment. Reception staff couldn't find my name and asked me multiple times who I was seeing. They had me change and then sat me behind the colorists who were busy applying color. Literally right behind them ....where people were squeezing past me... After about 10 minutes an assistant comes over and says that the colorist is almost done and will be right with me. Yolanda is supposedly one of their educators ....After another 10 minutes I get up because I couldn't stand being pushed on for people to pass and the fumes from other people's color. Not a single person asked me if I wanted to have something to drink. I went to receptionist who checked me in and even though she had just helped me a few minutes before we once again through my name and who I was seeing. After 5 minutes another person comes to tell me that they called me to change my appointment to 11 and I needed to come back in 30 minutes ..that was a flat out lie. The girl delivering the message started with "don't shoot the messenger" ... There were several "management" looking people hanging around chatting- not one could be bothered to see what the problem was. I've been to the best salons in the city....this one isn't worthy of the prices they charge... Really superb color work by Yolanda and her assistant. I brought my daughter for a heavy full highlight, the first time she'd ever had real hair color, as a gift. Yolanda did an excellent consultation, was meticulous in her technique, and the results are amazing. The reception staff and everyone else were polite and professional. All pros, only one con: it really is pretty chilly in there, and I'm not sure why. We weren't as desperately uncomfortable as some of the other reviewers here, but I'm not sure why it's necessary to have the temperature so low, especially since patrons have a wet head for extended periods when having color done. So wear a heat-tech t-shirt and go have a brilliant color job done at this salon. read more

The miracle worker and artist Kazu brought it back to beautiful life, with incredible highlights. I have been coming to Louis Licari for about 10 years. I see Yolanda, and she is a genius, and also just one of the sweetest people in the world. Everyone always compliments my hair color, and she listens to me when I want to try something new or make an adjustment. It is a hike for me from lower Manhattan, and I have occasionally tried other salons (from random local Fidi places to Frederic Fekkai in Soho). The color never compares, so I keep going to Yolanda! I would also like to note how impressed I am that Louis is always present and walking around the salon. He is there every time I am. He clearly loves his work and takes pride in it. He is not just a name. He seems fully invested in his business in every way. My one concern about this place is my repeated issues at check out. During my last four visits over the past 1.5 years or so, something ALWAYS comes up when I check out and pay. The first 2 issues were in charging my card the wrong amount, and having to have the amount re-charged. One happened on the spot. The other happened after I left. I owed another 27 dollars or something, and they took my card number over the phone to charge the additional amount. I thought this was shady, but obliged. Seems to me if they don't charge the right amount they should eat the cost. The third incident happened around my last birthday. I went in with two 100 dollar bills I had gotten as a gift from my mother-in-law (a well-to-do woman who lives in the Midwest). I gave them my credit card to pay, but wanted to apply the cash to the amount. I wanted to apply $100 to the cost, and get change for the other $100 for tips. This caused a lot of confusion, but eventually they figured out how to charge the card and deal with the cash. They held the bills up to the light, made a marker slash through them etc, I signed my receipt, and was on my way. Three hours later I received a call from the salon that the money I had given them was counterfeit. I was so shocked that my birthday money, from a Midwest bank, from my sweet mother in law might be counterfeit! I called her, and she assured me it could not be. It then occurred to me they had checked the bills in my presence and they were fine. They either had me mixed up with someone else or this was a scam. I was truly furious and embarrassed. Consequently I tried Fekkai after this, which although was a lovely salon experience - the color was all wrong, Thus, I went back to my trusted Yolanda this past Saturday. At check out they ran my card. They then told me they had charged me the wrong amount (here we go again!) and they needed to re-run it. I asked them how much it was off. They said 2 cents. I told them it was fine - don't worry about it. They insisted on running it again, and swore that I was wasn't being double charged, they said the first charge never even went through etc. Sure enough, the 2 charges are currently pending on my statement. If one doesn't go away I am going to have to report this salon, because I feel that something very strange is going on. In conclusion, I think their color (Yolanda) is THE BEST. I also find the prices competitive with other salons of the name and caliber. However, please be warned that something strange is happening in that check out area. Keep your eyes peeled and pay attention. If these things are happening to a lot of people this is a very big cause for concern. read more

A friend and I decided to do our own "Ambush Makeover at Licari Cutler. We were welcomed at our appointed times and told to change. We waited in the waiting area and Tara was there waiting for my friend for a consult and her color. I waited for more than a few minutes for lily. She walked me back and sat me down and walked away. She came back, quickly discussed my color options and walked away again. Long story short, Lily had just received a teacup dog as a pet and brought it to work. Guess who got all the attention over the next 3 hours. I am a dog lover but I never took my 2 rescues to teach elementary school. the color was ok but mr. Licari walked by and gave her a couple of tips. I couldn't complain to him as he was carrying the dog around. Our hair cutter, Malory was fantastic and Tara came and checked on my friend a couple of times during the cutting process Lily came to say goodbye because she had to take the dog to the vet because it had a parasite. I never saw her wash her hands after cuddling the dog. This happened on March 15 and I debated leaving this review. Lily was nice but should learn customer relations I was prepared to spend double what I was charged because we were excited about our experience. I complained on the way out and under tipped Lily but I really should have tipped the assistant because she did all the work. I hope mr Licari, who was nothing but wonderful and pleasant to me,rethinks his employee pet at work policy. I would go back and beg for Tara and Malory again read more

I don't understand how the Yelp rating for Louis Licari is not five stars!!! I was lucky enough to win a makeover at Louis Licari. I am a HUGE fan of the Today show ambush makeovers so could not have been more excited. My experience could not have been better!! I was a little worried that the salon would be over-the-top, basically snob central. Nothing could be further from the truth! Rey did my hair. I have never had so much fun in the chair. Usually, I have to struggle to make conversation and bury my nose in a magazine to completely avoid it. Not with Rey! And he did an AMAZING job on my hair in record time. Makeup was done by Enid. Not exactly what I would do, but I guess that's the point of a makeover. She also could not have been sweeter and my makeup did look amazing! I told her I was a fan of the ambush makeovers so she said that I had to meet Louis. He ALSO could not have been nicer. Took the time to talk to me and snap a few pics and seemed totally genuine. The salon has such a relaxed vibe and the staff is SOOO happy that it completely shows in their work and how they treat their patrons. And I wasn't even a paying customer. Hoping that standard pricing is not crazy expensive because I definitely want to use it as my regular salon now. Really IS as good as it gets! read more

Really, for 700 dollars, I thought my hair cut and color would be fabulous. What I go was really nothing better than I can get in this two horse town. I feel like I was robbed and I am furious. I have been going to Louis Licari for about 10 years for single process color ( to Hitomi ). I have never had such consistent , natural color as I have had here and from Hitomi. It is alwasy the perfect shade of bronw-- not red, not too dark, not dull--- very healthy and natural. Every single time . Even though is a " celebrity", 5th avenue salon, the entire staff and clientele is friendly and it feels very relaxed and normal . You are alwasy greeted , and offerend a nice drink and cant really ask for anything else from the experience. Hitomi and each assistant , people at desk, etc through all the times i have been there over past 10 years ( every 2-3 mos) , have all been very pleasant , professional and nice . I have been going to the Louis Licari Salon for over 5 years and am amazed at my transformation each time. I never wrote on yelp before but after getting a haircut from Arsen Gurgov i figured its worth a shot. I came in with no layers in my hair and decided for a new look, i asked the stylist what he would suggest and he told me to focus on how the hair looks not just above my neck but how it looks with my body. i trusted him with the scissors and it was literally like the fairy god mother sprinkled her magic and made my hair have shape and more volume. The staff there was very pleasant and kind. Also i got a few shampoos from there that made my hair more smoother. Overall, i rate this salon at a 5 star. read more

I have been going to the Louis Licari Salon for several years. I had an appointment to have my hair colored by a stylist who was a little less expensive than some of the other stylists. After she turned my hair "peach" color (but I had no time for her to re-do it), I called the salon the next day and told the receptionist that I was not happy. She made an appointment for me to come in again. This time, the "King of Color", Louis, redid my hair. The result was beautiful! He didn't charge me for his work, nor was I charged for the blow-dry. I have been going to Louis ever since, and HE does my hair. Louis is a master at what he does; He colors, has the product washed out, has the blow dry done, and checks for evenness of color. If it's not perfect, he adds more highlites...and continues the process., until it is perfect. I love our conversations while he is working; his employees are happy, as the atmosphere of his salon is easy-going and friendly. Every colorist works with an assistant, to make sure that the timing is correct. If, when your hair is being washed, the towel around your neck gets wet, they are very fast to replace it with a dry one. Everyone is aware of the comfort of the client. Last time I was there, someone baked fresh chocolate chip cookies in the salon and passed them around to clients. When I leave the salon, I feel like a princess. While it's more expensive to have Louis do my hair, he is worth every penny. I also use the salon for my Keratin Treatment once a year, just before summer begins. I have used Jennifer in the past, but it was her day off, so I used Arsen recently. He did a great job. A special enclosed room is used for the Keratin application, which is well vented and very comfortable. I love the salon and the people who make it what it is! It's FIRST CLASS from the Reception area to Cashier. I will never go elsewhere. I am completely happy! read more

NOTE: This review was from an experience 2 years ago. I went for model night to get highlights. It had been a few months, and the dark roots were about 2" thick. I've been a color model at B&B for years, and they usually like it when you wait a while between color to challenge the students. Everyone's description was pretty accurate--wait for over an hour, pay, sign before your taken upstairs. Then they move as a group from head to head. Finally, two hours later she gets started on the color. I've had much better colorists with more attention to detail. It seemed like every blond got the same tone, and same for the brunettes. No variation, no low-lights. After all that, the stylist didn't leave the color in long enough, so when she finally rinses it out, you can still see the hard line and it doesn't match the rest of my hair. It actually looks worse than when I came in, because the blond they put in was ashy (I'm golden blonde) and now it looks like I have grey roots. The teacher and stylist both pretended it was great. When I complained that this was substandard, the teacher chastised me for waiting so long between color (really? are you going to do that with your clients? and earlier they chastised the woman next to me for coming in too soon after she had color! is this how they will treat clients on the floor?) But they relented and re-did the color (because they knew I was right) but they were very snippy about it. I'm going back to Bumble, they do a really great natural job.
