I got my hair done by Anthony and he did a fantastic job. My roots looked horrible before and I had about 3 different colors going down my hair. He evened it out and made it look great. I got a full balayage and it took around 3 hours which was great as I have spent up to 6 hours in the chair before. The pricing was reasonable as well even with a tip. They also had the sweetest dog at the salon and she greeted people but was never bothersome. I guess if you have a severe dog allergy this might not be the place for you. What a rude place. We followed our stilts here a year ago. Love our stylist but the people around him have been cold and rude. Owner never even acknowledged that a family have four had brought out service to his business, never bothered to even introduce himself. Our stylist has been out on maternity leave so we have been trying to be flexible with other stylists. Today as I am trying to get my haircut before a wedding they call and say the stylist can't cut my hair. This is after moving the stylist and date three times. My stylist/colorist Morgan suggested I try Oksana when I asked about the microdermabrasion service Smith and Morgan Salon offer. Well, Morgan is great and I trust him completely so I made an appointment with Oksana. She was as wonderful as Morgan described. I thought it would hurt but Oksana was very gentle and very careful with me. The vibe in the very clean room was so relaxing. There were several steps to the service that included massage not just of my face (loved it) but to my shoulders, arms and hands, too. She even paid attention to my chest. It was like getting lots of facial treatments in one session. Best of all, it's reasonably priced. After Oksana finished, my skin felt very clean, soft and smooth. My husband introduced me to this salon as he had his haircut with Morgan, who is a lovely man. My husband was definitely happy with his haircut he went back a couple more times to Morgan but my experience was the opposite. I decided to do my haircolour here and Morgan introduced me to Thea. I wanted honey blonde highlights (showed a photo to Thea on how I would like it to be) but Thea gave me a very different type of blonde. It was a full on yellow and it's almost like I had a full head done. I sat for more than 5 hours and came home with overly processed hair with different color to what I had asked for. I was disappointed and the next day my hair started breaking. My hair broke by just running my fingers through it and it was giving so much stress. Some people might say "but it's just hair. It will grow back". It will but not without through the difficult process for a while. Trying to accept that your hair is damaged, the wrong color is one thin but having to spend so much money on treating it with the right conditioner and treatments at the salon is another. I started hating my look and get so upset as soon as I see my hair breaking and falling. A few days later I went back to Thea to show her the state of my hair. Thea herself is a nice person but by nowhere professional nor is she a good colorist. Nevertheless, we agreed that she would redo my hair color and give me a hair treatment. I was hesitant initially and should have insisted a refund. I then wrote to the salon that I would like someone else to fix my hair and Morgan offered to do it himself. He painted by hair darker and cut my hair off without charging me. He cut about 4-5 inches and I am happy with how my hair turned out. He also offered me a free gloss in 6 weeks time. I am appreciative for his kind gesture. Again he is a lovely man. 6 weeks have passed and I decided not to go back or do the free gloss as I am too stressed out to think about it. My hair is still damaged and no conditioner will fix it. The color has faded and the yellow tone started coming back it looks awful on my skin tone. It looks like I would need to get another trim and fix the color as this yellowness not a pleasant look. Anyway, I would like for this salon to be successful esp in this difficult time but I do not want anyone to go through the same experience like I did. I had wished I had read more reviews so I knew what to expect. Hair is so personal and sentimental to me and this depressing journey so I don't wish it on anyone and it's avoidable. I do however think that Morgan and his parter are good people and perhaps worth a try for a haircut and haircolour. Sadly Thea is not whom I would recommend based on my experience. I asked for hair color the first time I came to the salon. Morgan immediately jumped in and said he wouldn't do it because my hair was already gorgeous. Flattery will get you everywhere with me, but he was also right. Instead of a permanent dye, he offered a rinse as a way to experiment without ruining my natural hair. He was very convincing, and I went with the rinse. It was the right call, and I now know exactly what I want. He was also right that my skin tone had changed as I got older and couldn't handle going back to a dark brown. The rinse bore that out, and I will go lighter next time. In addition to being very attuned to my need, Morgan and his salon provided a decidedly pampered atmosphere. I had a good time, and they made me feel good. That's the other half of the battle, in my opinion. I still had the above good experience. I went back around two weeks later though to show the colorist how the color faded and what I wanted now. Both receptionists might have been out of a David Spade sketch. They didn't take my request to see a colorist, any colorist seriously. I got a shrug instead an apology for not being able to see anyone. Maybe I'll just go to the drugstore next time instead of spending $100. read more

After years of high-end salon hopping, I've finally found a colorist! Before discovering Sara at Smith and Morgan, my brunette hair always came out either too black, or too red and brassy. She's the first colorist to achieve the natural, shiny, caramel brown I've always wanted. Sara takes extreme pride in her work, fussing over every detail to ensure the end result is perfect. She was meticulous in the placement of my balayage and monitored it carefully during processing. She also mixed and applied her own glaze, unlike many colorists, who hand you off to an assistant to start on someone new. The salon itself is unpretentious, immaculately kept and extremely comfortable. The entire staff is lovely and frankly, all of the cuts and color I saw being done were beautiful. Obsessed with this new salon! After a terrible balyage experience I was extremely hesitant to color my hair again. Sara listened to exactly what I asked for and gave me the haircut + color of my dreams. Sara is a blonde hair balayage goddess! It's been so hard for me to find someone in NYC who understands how to make my hair both bright blonde AND honey/golden/caramel. On impulse, I walked in for the first time yesterday and asked for a cut and color, based on the great yelp reviews. I was able to get an appointment with Adriana an hour so later, and I'm so glad I did. I ended up with a partial balayage and a cut with long layers that I love, especially since I didn't know how to describe what I wanted. I think the only thing I told Adriana was that I didn't want short, and maybe a little more red vs caramel coloring. It'd been at least a year since my last visit to a salon, so my hair definitely needed the help! Aside from loving the end result (and a blowout that still looks good the next day, despite humidity), other "pros": - the people are really friendly and attentive, frequently asking if they can get you anything (coffee, wine...) - although this salon is newish, the people are all very experienced and have worked together for years-- they came from some other salon, so it seems to run really well and has good vibes - you can tell they all really care about their work and details, it was also clear that possibly everyone but me was a long-term client and had followed stylists from another location -Although it's on the lower level of a brownstone, the decor/ambience feels very light/bright and charming - both the receptionist and Adriana were upfront about the cost ranges, which I appreciated as a new client who didn't know what she wanted until after consulting with Adriana. It's a little expensive, but a) worth it, and b) not out of line with other good salons in nyc. Will definitely be back! read more

I went in to chop off my long hair and get a shorter hair style. I am extremely upset with the result mainly because I was left with a lot of really short layers and a chunk of long hair at the bottom, which I had to later cut the chunk to make it look less stupid. It didn't look like this when I left the salon, but it could've been because it was styled. To try and further fix the situation, I tried cutting it again to make it more even (did not touch the layers), but there's just no fixing it the layers are way too wispy and short plus it's very obvious where the line of the layers are :(. I included a picture of my hair after I cut the long chunk of hair a second time. This whole thing wasn't cheap and I could've done a better job myself, now I'm debating whether or not to just chop it off cause I can't wear my hair like this without looking like a mess. read more

First of all, Sara is an angel sent to save us from brassy hair purgatory and we don't deserve her. In response to the unsatisfied client below: she should consider taking the money she saved today and get herself a working watch because her timing is way off. Sara was highlighting my hair when this lady rudely walked herself from reception all the way to the back to find Sara and basically- in front of everyone- was like "ummm ??!?! My appointment was at 2:30." Sara didn't respond with an attitude she was simply flustered / panicky because she was busy doing my hair and this woman is on her case about the time. Sara reassured her if she can just hang tight another few minutes she promises to have her out by 4:15. I was conscious of the time because I felt bad even though I had no reason to, and by 3:05pm all of this had happened and she was already gone. So she was not there 40 minutes. [For the record I wasn't the reason Sara was running behind. Someone else had shown up late earlier in the day.] Regardless, what the fuck was she supposed to do in that moment exactly other than promise/reassure her she'd have her out in time? Like girl, bye. Shit happens that's life. Now my actual review: I've been highlighting my hair for 15 years. I've gone to the big dogs- B&B, Warren Tricomi, John Barrett. No one has ever been able to get me the color I want and I randomly show up to this place for the first time and somehow Sara made my color dreams come true. She may have lost a potential client, but I will happily replace her with my business. read more

Unfortunately I have to give this salon one star. I usually don't like to leave negative reviews but it's been a few months since I visited this salon and my hair still looks bad and is still very damaged. I went for highlights and saw Sara. We discussed what I wanted in advance...a very natural looking highlight on my dark brown hair. Sara did the highlights and a glaze. Since they charge extra for blowing out curly hair, i decides to save some money and left with wet hair. HUGE mistake. As soon as I got home my husband commented that my hair was orange! I called back and made an appointment for the next day. Sara had just left on vacation so I was seen by Morgan who put on a glaze. The color was much better but my hair was and still is so damaged from the highlights being left on far too long. Morgan said that the glaze would fade and my hair would return back to orange every few weeks and I would need to continue to get glazes until it grew out. I'm a busy working mother of two so this was sad news as I usually only touch up my hair every 6 months. The glaze was free of charge. I was then asked if I wanted to blow dry it to see the color. Since I learned from my mistakes I said yes! The girl who blew it out did the worst job ever. I have pretty curly hair and I wouldn't even call what she did a blow out. It was a blow dry, meaning my hair was dry but In no way straight or smooth. It was a frizzy mess. BUT I was charged for a blow out. When I told Morgan that I did not get a blow out as one can see from the frizzy mess on my head, he said that she still spent her time blow drying my hair. I paid the money and left and will never return which is super unfortunate as I live just 2 blocks away. This is not a salon I would recommend for brunettes or girls with curly hair. read more
