They were good and quick with my haircut and were able to adjust when the stylist didn't do what I requested (didn't cut my bangs). I had to repeat a few times what length I wanted because she kept cutting them waaaay too long (I asked for curtain bangs and she kept giving me a face frame lol). Very happy with my experience at Lighten Up! I came in for a blow out & curl for my daughters' baptism and Yolanda did an amazing job. My hair is thick & heavy so it doesn't always hold a curl the best but somehow she got it to stay curled the entire time. I'm not sure what kind of magic she did but it's now the following day and my hair STILL has a curl to it.. i'm definitely impressed! Fabulous haircut & highlights done by Ashley! She knows what she is doing. This is a very BUSY salon - every time I've been there it's been packed with people. They have a large staff & besides hair, also does nails & facials with Dermalogica products. Front desk staff seem a little confused & scattered. It took some time to check in & then to pay. I would ensure the front desk staff is trained better at customer service & ensuring that when a customer is there, to ensure that they are being helped. I came into the salon a bit overwhelmed with my overgrown, terrible colored hair but after my consultation with Tammy, all of my worries melted away! I called to schedule a color and cut, I was a long time customer but had not been there in over a year due to illness and I was refused an appointment without scheduling a consultation appt on another day as well, before an actual appt to do my hair....I have a job and can't take time for an extra appointment especially when all my information is already in their computer. Let me start by saying Kelly is my stylist. She is wonderful. 10/10. Would totally recommend. Let me also add my review has nothing to do with the services they provide. Good haircuts happen. Bad haircuts happen. Doesn't matter where you go. Here's my issue: today was the third time this year that my appointment has been cancelled. Not only was the cancellation day of, but with 45 minutes notice (it takes me 30 minutes to get to the salon.) 45 minutes notice. Three times this year. I've been loyal to Lighten Up for almost ten years. I fear it's time to take my business, and my thick, beautiful hair, elsewhere. read more

I had been a long-time loyal customer at Lightened up. I valued their service for more than 19 years. Since the new Management took over the Salon has taken a nosedive!! She is clueless, which explains why most of the Stylist moved on to greener pastures. My last experience with Lightened up I was accused of showing up angry, insisting on being seen by my Stylist who called in sick. I was then informed she doesn't work on Wednesday, even though I had a standing appointment every 5 weeks on a Wednesday..... The reality is, I wasn't at the Salon since they cancelled my appointment last minute because the Stylist was sick. It was bad enough to be accused of something you didn't do, but my Stylist didn't obviously didn't give a crap after 19 years of service, she never reached out to me. I knew my hair is difficult to brighten because I have strong black hair. I told a lady who took care of me about my hair but she said not a problem. She suggested me to visit and bleach my hair every 2 or 3 weeks. I visited 3 times. It killed my hair. Totally fried. I couldn't even brush my hair. My hair was fallen when I used a hair dryer. I told her about it but she said it's normal because bleach damages my hair and said "See you in 2 weeks" but I didn't want to keep doing this anymore. I went to another salon. They are surprised and asked me why I didn't stop sooner. This salon is big and organized. Busy. But I personally would not like to go back there. read more

I had been a loyal customer here for many years, recently, I made an appointment to go in for a root touchup and balayage. I had only been back a handful of times since the new ownership. So I visited the salon and got my service before I left I noticed that the balayage was very red. I had all over my profile there for years how much I did not like red in my hair. I did express to the stylist that I thought it was very red and wasn't sure. I went home anyway and figured I would give it some time to see if my feelings changed. A few days later I called the salon and expressed that I was very unhappy with the balayage stove it was red and not brown. They told me to come back and they will take care of it. I met with one of the senior stylists who took a look at it and said it was definitely red, and that she can fix it, she instructed me to make an appointment to come back a third time to have this done. I had expressed to her that I really needed to take care of the correction while I was there, reason being was, I had just lost my father and needed to get this taken care of so that I could leave to go up to where the funeral would be... She begrudgingly, took care of my hair while the stylist that had done the initial service completely ignored me!! At the conclusion I thanked her and gave her a tip. A few weeks later I had called to make a follow up appointment for my just my roots, and was told that I was no longer welcome at the salon. For what? Disgusting way to treat your clients! I will never ever spend another dime there good riddance. Important to note, that I have since gone to another local salon that had done the service correctly the first time!!! read more

I've always had a tricky relationship with Lighten Up. I think they do a good job and I'm never disappointed here, but I'm also not deeply impressed. It is a bit expensive, and while they always do a good job (and I love whatever it is they do when they wash your hair-- that's a 10/10), I'm always left wondering if the price was worth it. Horrible. Went for blonde balayage on my brown hair. I got no blonde at all but my hair turned orange. I wound up only paying for the cut and my roots getting done which came to $94. I felt bad for the stylist so I STILL tipped her and gave her $50. I called a few days later to give the stylist a chance to correct everything. Long story short they don't want me back. I came here today (referred by a family member and close friend) to have my hair color fixed and my hair repaired after having an AWFUL colorist in South Jersey nearly destroy my hair, and I had a wonderful experience. I worked with Mario and his assistants, and after nearly five hours of patient, tender care and working, my hair is looking much healthier again and almost to the color where I want it. The bill was a bit high, but definitely work the service and I left happy, considering where my hair was when I walked in. read more

I have been coming here for 7 years now. The service is always on point. The salon itself is bright, clean and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. Making an appointment is never an issue at least not in my experience. My stylist is Kinga. I love her and the work the she does on me everytime because i always leave feeling happy and pretty. I mosly go in for haircuts and the occasional highlight. The whole process is great. You walk in, check in and wait a few minutes for your stylist to come get you. Then you go and get shampooed and enjoy the most amazing scalp massage. Its heaven! They are very thorough with their shampooing and conditioning and all their products smell heavenly. Once the hair is nice an clean its to the chair to discuss any hair concerns, issues and overall desired style. Then let the magic begin as your hair is transformed into glorious beautiful locks! The person who called this a factory is right. They push you along and squeeze you for money and try to sell you products constantly. They also trick you about pricing by giving you an estimate, and then slap you with a price that ends up being double. They charge $600 for color. Their typical price is $150 an hour, so if you have long hair it can be even more. $150 an hour is more than what Ivy League lawyers charge. My Harvard- educated surgeon does not charge $600 for a session. These are delusional girls who barely graduated high school and think they can get the kind of money that society gives professionals who have years of top-ranked schooling for valued services. These girls only cut hair. When you compare them demanding $150 an hour to what school teachers get, well, it is flat-out offensive. read more

I used to be a regular here but not anymore. I went on 8/19/16 and was disappointed to learn that my usual stylist, John, had left the company. Ellen cut my hair and while she did a decent job, I was annoyed when I went to pay. The total was $26. I usually pay $21. I was shocked and asked why the price increase. The woman who rang me up explained that because Ellen was a "Level 6" stylist is why it was more expensive. John was a "Level 1" so you pay for the "skill and quality" of the stylist. LISTEN, $26 for a men's haircut and plus tip is over $30 bucks. My ass. Basically the prices vary per stylist. In what universe does this pricing model make sense?! It doesn't specify this ANYWHERE. For proper business, this should've been informed before my haircut, espeically if they're recommending a stylist. What am I paying for? Especially when my side burns weren't at even length. This place is always so packed I decided to try it out. I came in for a balayage and Kendall worked her magic on my hair! I'm so obsessed with how it came out! I came in with previously bleached hair from a balayage gone wrong and Kendall was able to bring my hair back to life. I will definitely be coming back in the future. I have mixed feelings on this salon. I started going here a few of months ago on recommendation of a friend. The staff at the front desk is always very friendly and helpful, but once you walk past the desk it's a completely different story. The woman that I go to does excellent color, but I'm not thrilled with the cuts. She only cuts based on a picture, but it doesn't come out like the picture at all. In addition, whenever she walked away from the chair, the girl cutting hair in the station next to her started loudly complaining about my stylist and some of the clients to other stylists and her client. At one point, she even angrily shoved my stylist's cart behind my chair. It was very unprofessional and awkward for me as the client. If my cut and color were fabulous, I'd be willing to deal with the lack of professionalism, but unfortunately that's not the case. I plan on finding a new place for my next cut and color. When I shared my experience with the friend who recommended the place to me, she said that she had a similar experience the last two times that she went and is now going back to her old salon. read more

She listened to what I wanted but still made her own suggestions, and answered any questions I had about how to make my hair healthier. I've been there a few times since it is right near me and I have a baby so I can't go to the other salon I used to go to (the imfamous rt 10 salon :p) since it is pretty far away but I'm so glad that I found an amazing stylist here! Tamana does my coloring and styling and I couldn't be happier! The best feeling when people compliment my hair! I definitely recommend this salon, the prices are great and all the stylist are so funny and sweet! I've only done my hair here but I heard they have a cool new gel nail polish process that doesn't hurt your nails as much so I hope to try that soon! read more

Probably around 6 years ago, I used sun in on my hair to make it lighter. Ended up making my hair orange. Had it "fixed" by a different salon but it still looked terrible. I called to make an appointment here, not knowing any of the stylists. They assigned me to Dee, who has been doing my hair for the past 5 years. I refuse to go to anyone else or anywhere else, even when I'm at college I'll wait to come home so she can do my hair. Great prices for the quality. Lighten Up was INCREDIBLY crowded when I went in for my appointment on a Saturday. I felt like I just walked into a REALLY popular night club, with patrons surrounding the front desk like a watering hole serving free drinks! I'll get right to it....the four stars is only because I had to wait for 20 minutes for my scheduled appointment, and also because my stylist was literally absconded for 15 minutes to consult with another customer in the middle of my ridiculously long appointment. That being said, extreme care was taken to 'strip' the unfortunate mess that had been my previous color choices. I was in the salon for over four hours, and I can't believe the patience my stylist had! Additionally, she checked in with me regulary to make sure I was comfortable, didn't need anything to drink, etc. Also, she offered to do a color within two weeks if the tone was even the least bit off. The price was entirely reasonable for such an endeavor, and I'm glad I went. I'll be back to try pedicures, facials, etc. Maybe even some wedding prep? read more

We don't go anywhere else. My wife can spend the whole day here with her hair, nails, facials, and massage. I got cheap one time and went to Fantastic Sam's...big mistake. I looked like I got a "bowl cut" (think Moe from 3 stooges). Our kids go here too. We each have our own preferred stylists. It does cost more than most places, but it's worth it. Rochelle is my girl, knows exactly how I like my hair and she even talks sports with me. MY wife talked me into a couples massage package with facials and pedicures. That was an adventure, but it would have been better if I got the young, cute masseuse that my wife had, or if they started the massage with the lights off. Update: After reading several reviews mentioning LU's prices are reasonable, I must admit, I am a serious cheapo and for me to pay $25 for a cut is really saying a lot. It's worth the peace of mind of knowing I get a good cut....and friendly service...every time. read more
